Prevar Limited: Update June 2016 Dr Brett Ennis Chief Executive DDI Phone Mobile +64 (0)
The Purpose of Prevar The purpose of Prevar is to globally commercialize new apple and pear cultivars in such a manner that will assist Australian and New Zealand growers to secure preferential plus first mover advantage and achieve sustainable premiums from the new cultivars. Cultivars are also commercialized/licensed in the Northern Hemisphere to create export market demand, achieve critical mass and secure brand investment/awareness. Prevar contracts with Plant & Food Research to undertake the breeding. Prevar contracts with the Associated International Group of Nurseries [AIGN] to undertake quarantine, propagation and testing and intellectual property protection in their Member countries. Prevar licenses with third parties the rights to grow market and sell the new varieties.
The Prevar 3C Business Model 1. CREATION New varieties are bred [Created] by Plant & Food Research under contract to Prevar. 2. CAPTURE The new varieties are globally tested and protected by plant patent in Prevar s name by AIGN under contract to Prevar [IP Capture]. Prevar owns the associated trade marks. Collectively this is Prevar s intellectual property. [IP] 3. COMMERCIALIZATION Prevar grants licenses to grow, market and sell a variety using the IP [Commercialization]..

The New Fruit Brand
Global launch of PIQA fruit brand name in June 2013
More specifically PIQA fruits are interspecific pears [ISP]; they are conventional hybrid crosses of European, Japanese and Chinese pears. European pears bring flavour and aroma; Japanese pears bring fine juicy texture, fruit ripe on the tree, precocity, and leaf resistance to pear scab; Chinese pears bring coarser texture, fruit ripe on the tree, long storage and shelf life, some unique flavours, precocity, grower-friendly tree habit, some scuff resistance and leaf resistance to pear scab. Result: Innovative new fruit family
This is a photo of the PIQA BOO brand selection That has licensed in Australia (Feshmax, exclusively) and NZ with multiple entities.
PremP009 piqa boo
This is a photo of the PIQA REO brand selection that is being currently being licensed in the UK. Note; this selection was unsuitable for NZ release and is a very early ISP cross.
The next selection in the piqa family Observed for 5 years at Stage 2 and 1 year at Stage 3 Large 250 g spherical interspecific pear Orange/red full colour skin coverage, distinctive lenticels Crisp and very juicy, nutty flavour when ripe Over 30 weeks cold storage life Production similar to PremP009
PremA129 Commercial proposals being sought from Australian and NZ entities. Trees available for testing. Fruit appearance an intermediate conical shape. dark red bock colour over a light yellow background colour and with distinctive white colour lenticels. Colour development must be managed to ensure that fruit can be harvested at an earlier maturity. High maturity fruit can soften quicker during storage. Average fruit size on the tree is typically g at moderate crop loads. Fruit eating At harvest fruit have a moderate pressure [7.5 to 8.5 kg], are crisp and juicy, have low acidity, and are slightlymoderately sweet. After 10 weeks cold storage plus 1 week shelf life at 20 C fruit remain moderately firm and crisp with a firmness loss of approximately 0.5 to 0.7 kg. Moderate fruit soluble solids typically around 14.5% with low acidity [ %]
PremA34 Commercially released, with proposals from Australia being sought. Trees available for testing Stage 3 evaluation completed in 2013 Distinctive block rosy pink/red skin colour Matures about Royal Gala time, with production and fruit size similar to Royal Gala Apple scab resistant (single gene) Tangy flesh with moderate firmness and crispness Core rot susceptible with some flesh browning with longer storage Can show some biennial bearing if not managed correctly
Observed for 2 years at Stage 2 and Stage 3 Type 2 red flesh apple, Braeburn maturity time Large fruit size, blushed, multi coloured Excellent post-storage texture, sub-acid with distinctive berry flavour Cosmetics and red flesh intensity dependent on season and site
Apple Stage1 and Stage 2 selections nominated for pre-commercial trials Stage 3 in 2014, 2015: High flavour, Durable scab resistance, Red Flesh
Draft PRC3 Breeding Themes THE MAINSTAYS OF PFR s PIPFRUIT BREEDING PROGRAMMES Differentiated and attractive fruit appearance Excellent eating quality - exceptional textures and appealing flavours throughout medium cold storage and shelf life for a range of overseas markets THESE WILL CONTINUE AS OUR MOST IMPORTANT SELECTION CRITERIA Additional traits for breeding >2017 = Combining inplant resistances to our most important diseases of apple and pear These considerations drive future breeding strategy and the necessary resources required to deliver new cultivars as quickly as possible
Draft PRC3 Apple Breeding Themes Draft Breeding Themes European canker resistance +/- Fireblight resistance Fireblight resistance + Durable scab resistance Red flesh + Durable resistance to scab European canker resistance+ Durable scab resistance +/- Fireblight resistance» Protecting the NZ and Australian industries from a disease catastrophe» Reducing cost of control» Making pathogen-free fruit exporting into sensitive markets easier
