Prving nce again that beekeepers are resilient flk, several members brught tents t pitch, and we munched and chatted under these shelters till the sun shyly emerged at last, giving children f all ages a chance t explre the farm and meet the critters. We had a brief business meeting:

2 Swarm Remval Update: VP Nrm Switzler reprted that the Bee Team has been busy remving swarms and clnies. Pat Swinth, Gary Selzner, Kent Yates, and Mark Stewart have als given much time and saved many bees frm ptential exterminatin. Susanne nted that she gets calls abut swarms regularly and asks that anyne wh wuld like her t refer them t callers, and/r t be listed as a Bee Team member in the annuncements sectin f ur newsletter, let her knw. LCBA Service Lg Frm. Susanne presented the new service lg frm, which gives LCBA members the ptin t recrd the service they d fr ur cunty as beekeepers: swarm remvals, bee mentring, educatinal talks, etc. WSBA is spnsring a grant cmpetitin fr Washingtn beekeeping grups like urs: if we can dcument what we d, Susanne will apply fr a 2012 grant. If we wn the grant, we culd help reimburse swarm remval team members fr their mileage, fr example. Peter Glver nted that the service lg frm wuld help the Lewis Cunty Extensin ffice shw what LCBA des in exchange fr the free meeting space, mailing address, parking, etc. that we enjy as a member rganizatin. The frm is simple yu just fill in yur name, the date, what yu did, the hurs, and mileage if applicable and give it t Susanne at the next meeting. Observatin Hive: LCBA bught the beautiful hand-tled bservatin hive that David Sherwd made as a 4H prject. The $200 will g t David s cllege fund. The bservatin hive will be a great display item fr LCBA at public events. Suthwest Washingtn Fair: the Sherwds are nt running a bth this year since they have clsed their apiary business. Heather nted that there was a chance LCBA might be able t get int the wildlife display, and abut a dzen members expressed interest in vlunteering if LCBA culd have a table there. Unfrtunately, this didn t wrk ut, s the club may want t think abut applying fr a space in advance fr the 2012 Fair. Gardening Fr Everyne: LCBA will have a table at this annual Master Gardeners event n September 10, in Washingtn Hall at Centralia Cllege. GFE is free and pen t the public. Susanne, Peter, and Bb will be there and ther LCBA members are welcme t jin in and spread the wrd abut ur grup and beekeeping in general. If yu d like t help, please cntact Susanne. August LCBA meeting: Bb will speak abut his adventures develping a hney business. Other LCBA members wh have experience ding this are crdially invited t chime in t! 3 President: Bb is term limited ut, but will remain n the bard as past president and will cntinue team teaching the beginning beekeeping curse with VP Nrm Switzler. All present thanked Bb warmly fr his generus service and fr his visin in starting up the Lewis Cunty Beekeepers back in This means that we need a new president. Susanne, as secretary, and Nrm, as VP, are serving as a nminating cmmittee (see cntact inf abve if yu wuld like t serve). Nrm nted that nw that LCBA is up and running, there s n wheel t (re)invent, s the president s jb may nt be as taxing as it was in the beginning. Bb nted that it s nt necessary t be a master beekeeper t be president: the bard and the rganizatin as a whle has plenty f expertise t fall back n. The presidency is a service pprtunity fr anyne wh has ideas abut future directins and prjects fr the grup, r just wuld like t help keep LCBA ging. Treasurer: Sarah Rebas culdn t attend the ptluck, but sent a message that she is willing t cntinue as Treasurer. She added that the treasurer s jb is nt t taxing and is nt nly a gd way t get invlved, but als t share the expertise s that mre peple in the grup knw hw t manage ur finances. Mentrship Crdinatr: Brandy De Melt is als willing t cntinue serving, but invited members t cnsider running fr this psitin, especially if they have utreach ideas. Raffle! VP Nrm ran the shw with the aplmb f a Vegas veteran. 4 Directins: 6 Tbs HONEY 1 cup lemn juice 1 lemn, thinly sliced Ice cubes 1 quart carbnated water Disslve hney in lemn juice Add lemn slices and refrigerate till ready t use Fill 12 unce glass with ice cubes Add ¼ cup lemn juice mixture and fill glass with carbnated water Garnish with lemn wedges Trpical Tea Cler (4 servings) Ingredients: Directins: 1 pint fresh strawberries ¼ cup HONEY 1 can (6 unces) frzen range juice 2 cups brewed green tea, cled In blender r fd prcessr cntainer, cmbine strawberries & hney Prcess till smth Add range juice cncentrate & prcess till well blended Stir int cled tea Serve ver ice Fr thse wh like a ccktail, the Hney Bard suggests Hney Buzz Drinks with Hney Simple Syrup :

5 Hney Simple Syrup: Cmbine 1 part ht water t 4 parts hney & stir Pink Hney Bee: Cmbine 1 ½ z. vdka (can substitute spiced rum r citrus vdka), 1 z. Hney Simple Syrup (see abve), 2 z. sweet and sur, and 1 z. cranberry juice. Shake with ice and strain int a large ccktail r martini glass; garnish with maraschin cherry. Hney Blssm: Put ice int a 12 z. glass and, in rder, add 1 z. rum, 5 z. range juie, and 1 z. Hney Simple Syrup (see abve). Stir. Lemn Drp: Rim martini glass with sugar. Cmbine 2 z. vdka, squeezed juice frm ne lemn, and ice. Lightly muddle. Strain int a glass laced with 1 z. hney simple syrup (see abve). Serve Lemn Drp with a lng lemn twist r thin slices f lemn. REVISED Hney Guacamle (8 servings): I ve been playing with this recipe because the gritty feeling f that chpped cilantr just bugged me, but putting the whle shebang in the blender lses that nice chunky texture. S here s Take Tw: Ingredients: 2 ripe avcads, peeled, pitted and mashed 1 Tablespn lime juice [gives a bit f kick t balance the hney sweetness] 1 Tablespn HONEY 1/3 cup red r Walla Walla sweet nins, finely chpped cayenne OR paprika, plus salt, t taste Salmn with Hney Balsamic Glaze (6 servings; yu can als try grilling this using the Ingredients: glaze t baste the salmn) 6 salmn filets with skin (5 t 6 unces each) ½ cup HONEY 3 Tbs balsamic vinegar 1 Tb live il 2 clves garlic, finely chpped

6 1/8 tsp salt Directins: Seasn flesh-side f filets with salt Arrange skin-side dwn in shallw baking pan Rast at 500 degrees F. fr 5 minutes Make the glaze: mix HONEY, balsamic vinegar, live il, garlic, and salt Drizzle 1 Tb. f glaze ver each filet Rast at 500 degrees F fr 3 t 5 mre minutes Put salmn n serving plates and drizzle filets with the rest f the glaze Fruit Salad with Hney Ygurt Dressing (4 servings): Ingredients: 1 cup halved strawberries 1 banana, sliced diagnally 1fresh pear, cred and sliced 1 cup pineapple chunks 4 small grape clusters 2 Tbs lemn juice ½ pint plain ygurt ¼ cup HONEY 2 tsps lemn peel 1 tsp vanilla Directins: Arrange all the fruit n a platter, drizzle the banana and pear with lemn juice t retard disclratin. Cmbine ygurt, hney, lemn peel, and vanilla; mix well and serve with the fruit. Enjy!

With nurse bees n the brd, there s n playing. Bees grm and feed the Queen, while she s laying. In an up-and-dwn-beeline, their swarms fly. Female bees defend, by stinging, then die. Male bees can t sting, and are nt ften seen; Drnes dn t wrk; they nly mate, with the Queen. Hneybees fly, in the warmth f the sun, Tiling till evening, when day s dne.
