2016 COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE (CSA) PROGRAM Join Us For Our NINTH Season Of Community!! What is a CSA?! Over the last 25 years, CSA's (Community Supported Agriculture) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. Here are the basics: a farmer offers a certain number of "shares" to the public. Typically the share consists of a set amount of produce, but other farm products may be included. Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a "membership" or a "subscription") and in return receive a bag of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season. It helps you learn to eat local, support a local farm and family, and make more healthful choices! A CSA With Bird s Haven Farms Our family just celebrated our 20 th year at The Granville Farmers Market. It seems yesterday Ann took her Grandfather s card table down to Centenary Methodist Church s parking lot to sell her dozen eggs and extra tomatoes. We think of all the friendships made and honored to be a part of your family s life. Our own farm family has grown to include, Tom, Ann, Lee, Lindsey, Olivia (8), Ella (7), Sophia (5), Claire (3), Brian, Bryn, Emlyn (2) and new baby due in February. In our 21 st season we now offer produce from early May through the New Year! We are able to provide early and late season produce thanks to our new to us 100 X 90 greenhouse and now seven high tunnels (soon to be 11!). We will harvest tomatoes over a month earlier and later than those without high tunnels As always we only sell produce we have started from seed on Bird's Haven Farms and never second sell. We are able to guarantee the quality of our produce from start to finish. One of our FAVORITE parts of our CSA program is the add-on opportunities. This means when you purchase a Bird's Haven Farms produce subscription you have the option to "add-on" a meat, cheese, eggs, herb, bread, and/or coffee subscription! We hope this will allow our members an increased opportunity to support and eat local in 2015! These "add-ons" will be delivered to you with your weekly Bird's Haven Farms produce subscription. We do not take any fees from our add-ons. 100% of the price goes right back to the producer! Details Granville - Tuesday: 4:30-6:00 at The Granville Tuesday Farmers Market Newark- Tuesday: 3:00-4:00 at Licking Memorial Hospital ** Westerville - Wednesday: 4:30-6:30 at The Westerville Farmers Market New Albany - Thursday: 5:00-6:30 at The New Albany Farmers Market Newark - Friday: 5:00 6:30 at The Canal Market District ** late pick-up available through hospital cafeteria.
The Bag Our most common question is, what comes in a bag? The following is an example week. The variety and amount will vary each week. A share receives 9-11 items each week. The amount of produce given varies by size and seasonal timing. We are set up market style and you pack your own bag with the designated produce. 92% of our 2014 customers reported being satisfied or overly satisfied with the amount of produce they received. We give a small variety of everything, instead of a lot of a few things. We want to you to try all the flavors of the season. Example Bag: Produce Variety Just Right A Little More Heirloom Tomatoes 3 5 Summer Squash 3 4 Colored Bell Peppers 3 4 Sweet Banana Peppers 6 10 Purple Bulb Onions 3 4 Red Potatoes 1/3 lb 1/3 lb Black Beauty Eggplant th of July Cherry Tomatoes 1 pint 1 pint Bi-Color Sweet Corn 6 8 Green and Purple Okra.5lb 1lb Sizes: We continue to offer 20-week (starting May 24) or 11-week (starting July 12) subscriptions. Just Right This size is our most popular with 73% of our customers. Just Right is best for a single person or a family of two. A Little More Previously our medium will give you enough produce for a family of three or four depending on your normal vegetable consumption. U-Pick Patch- You will notice we do not offer a large amount of green beans, lima beans, or peas. This is because the high cost of labor would overwhelm the production cost of each CSA bag. So we will offer many opportunities for U-Pick! If you cannot get out to pick we will work something out. Let s just talk early in the season. Harvest Dinner at Bird s Haven Farms and U-Pick Pumpkin Patch - Long been a dream of Tom s, we are looking forward to hosting our CSA family to Bird s Haven Farms on Sunday, September 25 th for a harvest dinner! We will be featuring Oink, Moo, Cluck grilled chicken and a potluck dinner! It will be a wonderful experience coming together and celebrating the season. We cannot wait for you to meet Bagel the Beagle and have a tour by all the Bird girls! Each visitor will receive a pumpkin of their choosing! We grow both your traditional orange Jack-O-Lanterns but also many heirloom varieties you may enjoy.
Partner Information Our partner add-ons are something we hope you consider including in your purchase. It is a great way to support many local producers. Read below to learn a little more about these local producers and what they are offering! Oink Moo Cluck Our MOST popular add-on. Add a meat CSA from Oink Moo Cluck in Ashtabula County. At OMC, they raise the animals on a small 100-acre family farm in a healthy and open environment while allowing them to reach their natural maturity on a diet of natural grains and grasses and without the aid of hormones or antibiotics. Unlike many farms, OMC completes its own processing to ensure the most humane treatment of the animals and to maintain complete control of the quality and safety of the final product. A family membership includes 10 different cuts of meat per month and an individual includes 6 cuts of meat. Members will be responsible with filling out an order form 2 weeks before established delivery date. More information on OMC s program is available at our website: Please review this exciting program. *Please note some products contain artificial preservatives. Contact order@oinkmoocluck.com for more information. Osage Lane Creamery Tom & Emma Stout began making cheese commercially in May of Having owned goats for over 20 years, they decided to buy a larger herd and begin producing milk for a commercial enterprise. They currently sell traditional raw goat's milk Feta with a Bulgarian flavor. This cheese is aged 60 days in brine. The CSA will also offer a semi-hard cheese called Danish Hansen. It has a flavor between cheddar and asiago. Osage Lane Creamery will offer a 1/3 lb. Lucky Cat Bakery is a small cottage food bakery producing a variety of artisan breads using only the finest ingredients. The owner, Andrew Semler, came to central Ohio 6 years ago from Cape Cod, Massachusetts. There he was the owner and head chef of a Japanese and Sushi restaurant for 7 years. Looking for a change from the restaurant world he started a small farm in Pataskala, OH, Lucky Cat Farm. While selling vegetables at the Granville farmers market he noticed there was no bread available. Lucky Cat Bakery was started. Lucky Cat Bakery specializes in 10 artisan breads including; Baguette, Country White, Foccacia, Hearty Sourdough, Multigrain Rye, Ciabatta, Golden Raisin Oat, Wholewheat. None of the breads use egg or milk products but some contain honey. You will receive a loaf of bread a week. One Line Coffee is a local certified organic roaster sourcing coffee from small farms and sustainable co-operatives. You may have enjoyed a cup at River Road Coffeehouse in Granville and Newark. Better coffee means
a lot of different things to different people. To One Line Coffee it means flavor and quality, sustainability, and traceability. It means doing everything they can to ensure farmers and workers are treated well, and earn a livable wage. One Line Coffee will offer fresh-roasted whole bean 12 ounce coffee pouches as an add-on to our CSA subscription. Blue Owl Garden Emporium herb farm offers locally and sustainably grown culinary herbs, edible flowers, herbal seasoning blends and teas, and a variety of other unusual herbal concoctions. With over 100 dried herbal products available for sale during the winter and an additional 125 fresh ones during the growing season, it's likely they can fill your every culinary herb need. All grown in Licking Co. Ohio without synthetic pesticides or artificial fertilizers. They also offer fresh culinary mushrooms, grow-your-own mushroom logs, native bramble berries, and various other forest edibles in season from our tree farm, Blue Owl Hollow. A fascination with unusual edibles ensures that they will always have something of interest available. Blue Owl is now offering a culinary herb subscription service in partnership with Bird's Haven Farm. Each week you will receive either a premiumquality whole-leaf dried culinary herb (with tried n' true recipe included), or one of Blue Owl's unique signature herbal tea or culinary seasoning blends. All herbs are packaged in re-usable, recyclable and/or returnable glass jars. Bird s Haven Farms Eggs The mother bird, Ann, has continued to raise her beloved hens cage-free on the farm. These hens are Ann s pride and joy and are living it up in their two-story coop and pasture. Ann hand collects, cleans, and packages each dozen Our chickens are raised free of antibiotics and live long after their egg laying days are over. However, due to Ann s health concerns we will be supplementing our egg CSA this season with fellow egg producer. We will only source our eggs from other chicken-lovers. We will offer a full dozen every other week. Limited to the first 50 subscribers. Latshaw Apiaries Honey!!! One of our most popular add-ons. We are excited to have neighbors from Alexandria (we are all neighbors in the country) Latshaw Apiaries. The family farm is operated by Joe, Leah, and Jacob Latshaw. They work the bees to make them healthy and strong, and conduct research to learn how to best tend bees in the central Ohio climate. Enjoy the benefits of their Raw honey. The honey is unheated and bottled directly from the honeycomb.you will receive 1 pint a month. Tiger Mushroom Farms is a family owned and operated mushroom farm. Tiger Mushroom Farms was founded by our 8 year old son. He came up with the idea after a Cub Scout Project ended. He has been featured in
the 2015 summer edition Edible Columbus Magazine and he has been on a few local TV morning shows. He was recently on the Steve Harvey Show in October. We cultivate shiitake & oyster mushrooms using good agricultural practices. We also sell dried shiitake and our tasty shiitake & onion soup mix. The soup mix can be used to season hamburgers, turkey burgers, salmon patties, meatloaf, beef & broccoli and MORE!! We will delivery a 4 ounce container of fresh Shiitake Mushrooms every other week. We will include dried mushrooms, oyster mushroom, and a mushroom soup mix when available. Ready to sign-up or still have questions? Contact us: Phone: FarmFresh@BirdsHavenFarms.com As Always, thanks for supporting local! ~The Bird Family
