The Pizza Mystery (The Boxcar Children) Sample file History of Pizza: Although many people may believe that the Italians first invented pizza, the origins of pizza can be traced back to ancient times. Ancient Middle Eastern countries were known to eat flat, unleavened bread, similar to pita bread, baked in mud ovens. Ancient Mediterranean people ate flat bread topped with olive oil and spices. Pizza as we know it today most likely originated in Naples, Italy. The website shares this story: In the late 1800s an Italian baker named Raffaele Esposito was believed to have created a dish for visiting royalty. According to the story, the Italian monarch King Umberto and his consort, Queen Margherita, were touring the area. In order to impress them and to show his patriotic fervor Raffaele chose to top flat bread with food that would best represent the colors of Italy: red tomato, white mozzarella cheese and green basil. The king and queen were so impressed that word quickly reached the masses. The end results were that the dish was well received to the extent that others began to copy it.

Pizza came to the U. S. in the beginning of the 1900s. Italian immigrants, mostly living in New York City and Chicago, introduced the U. S. to pizza. Gennaro Lombardi is credited with making the first pizza in the U. S. when he opened the first pizzeria in New York City in Soldiers from World War II also fueled the pizza popularity. They ate pizza in Italy and wanted to enjoy it when they went home. Today in North America, pizza is a favorite food, second only to the hamburger. Cheese and pepperoni are the favorite topping combinations, especially among children. Pizza is sold in a variety of forms: calzones, pizza pockets, rolls, breads, stuffed crust, thick and thin crusts, and more. Even crazy foods such as ice cream pizza, pizza candy and pizza flavored potato chips are finding a market somewhere. America has been celebrating National Pizza Month in the month of October since On average, each person in the United States eats about 46 slices of pizza each year. How many slices have you eaten so far this year? Pizza Activities 1. Pizza Sequencing Cards Preschool Early Elementary: Place the pizza sequencing cards in order to show how to make a pizza. Ask your child to narrate what is happening in the pictures. Use either the Pizza Sequencing Photo Cards or the Simple Pizza Sequencing Cards. Sample file 2. How to Make a Pizza Narration (with Pizza Sequencing Photo Cards) Elementary: Once your child has placed the pizza sequencing photo cards in order, ask him to write a narrative to tell the story in the photos. The narrative should include the steps which the girls are following to make their pizza. Also, encourage your child to interweave a story with the narrative. Ask questions such as: Why are the girls making a pizza? Why is the man eating a piece? Who is the man? Why did the girls choose those particular toppings? Have your child use one of the pizza books.

3. Pizza Sequencing Strips Early Elementary: Cut apart the sentence strips and have your child place them in order. If you wish, make a booklet with the strips. Using half sheets of paper, staple the pages together to make a book. Glue one strip on each page. Your child can add illustrations. 4. Pizza Patterning Cards Preschool - Early Elementary: Print out as many copies as needed of the Pizza Patterning Cards. (Print them on cardstock for durability.) Create patterns with the cards. For younger children, begin with an AB pattern. Build two or three repetitions of the pattern and ask your child to extend it. Gradually build up to harder patterns such as ABBA, ABC, etc. Then ask your child to create their own patterns. Sample file 5. Happy Pizza Pattern Cards Preschool Early Elementary: Print out as many copies as needed of the Happy Pizza Pattern Cards. Build patterns using the Happy Pizza Pattern Cards. Since there are six different cards, more complex patterns can be built.

6. Pizza Fractions Games (You will find a section right before the game titled Papa Paulo s Fraction Instruction. This small section will provide a little instruction for you and your child about how fractions work in the most basic of terms.) Elementary: Print all game pieces and spinners on cardstock. Be sure to print out enough fractional pieces and large empty pizza pans for each player to build a pizza. To assemble the spinners, push a paper fastener through the middle black dots. Do not push the paper fasteners all the way in (you do not want them to be flush with the spinners). Hook paper clips onto the heads of the paper fasteners. The paper clips should spin securely but freely on the spinners. Before playing one of the Pizza Fractions games, decide which fractional pieces and spinner will be used. Game options include: 1. Fourths Fractions: For beginners, use Spinner #1 and the fractional pieces: ¼, 2/4 and ¾. 2. Fourths Fractions: For post-beginners, use Spinner #2 and the fractional pieces: ¼, ½ and ¾. 3. Eighths Fractions: For children with some fractions knowledge, use Spinner #3 and the fractional pieces: 1/8, 2/8, 3/8, 4/8, 5/8, 6/8, and 7/8. 4. Eighths Fractions: For children with knowledge of equivalent fractions, use Spinner #4 and the fractional pieces: 1/8, ¼, 3/8, ½, 5/8, ¾ and 7/8. 5. Twelfths Fractions: For children with some fractions knowledge, use Spinner #5 and the fractional pieces: 1/12, 2/12, 3/12, 4/12, 5/12, 6/12, 7/12, 8/12, 9/12, 10/12 and 11/ Twelfths Fractions: For advanced children, use Spinner #6 and all of the fractional pieces. Sample file To play any of the games, give each player a copy of the pizza pan. In turn, each player spins the appropriate spinner and adds that fractional piece to his pan. If the piece will not fit, the player loses his turn. If the player lands on the Lose one piece space, he must take one piece off of his pan and end his turn. If he does not have any pieces on his pan, he simply loses his turn. The first player to build his pizza wins.

Multi-leveled Play: If this game is being played with a mixture of beginning and intermediate players, use the eighths or twelfths fractional pieces. The beginners can build pizzas using the fractional pieces containing only common denominators. The intermediate players can build pizzas containing mixed denominators. 7. History of Pizza Elementary: Learn about the history of pizza (read the History of Pizza and do further research on the internet). Create a pizza history timeline beginning with ancient times and ending in the present. Below each date, draw a picture of what you think pizza may have looked like at that time. Extension: Use one of the pizza circle books or the large flap pizza to write a pizza history narrative. 8. Pizza Party Math Elementary: Pretend you are having a pizza party and you have invited a bunch of friends, all of whom are very picky eaters. Each of your friends wants his or her unique pizza. Every friend wants cheese and at least one other topping. The toppings from which your friends can choose are: pepperoni, olives, anchovies and mushrooms. List all of the different topping combinations. How many unique pizzas can you make? 9. Pizza Measurement Elementary: Discuss the following geometrical terms and formulas: 1. Diameter (of a circle): Any straight line segment that passes through the center point of the circle and whose endpoints are on the circle. When we find the diameter of a circle, we find the measurement of the line segment. 2. Radius (of a circle): Any line segment starting from the center point of the circle and ending on any part of the circle. (diameter = ½ the radius OR d = ½ r) 3. Pi (π): The ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, or approximately Circumference (of a circle): The measurement around the perimeter of the circle. Note the different ways to write the formula for finding the circumference of a circle: Circumference = Pi times diameter (c = π x d) (c = π d) Circumference = 2 times Pi times radius (c = 2π r) Sample file Apply the above terms and formulas to a real pizza. Once the pizza is baked, use a tape measure or ruler to measure the diameter of the pizza. Then ask the child to determine the radius. Next ask the child to determine the circumference of the

pizza. Your pizza may become cold. Explain to your child that in parts of Italy, food is often eaten cold. Crust dipped in sauce (much like your cold pizza) and all types of pasta salads are called antipasto. 5. Picky, Picky Pizza Elementary: Using the Picky Pizza Matrix, solve the following problem. Mark the matrix any way you wish to help you determine the answers. Picky Pam likes pepperoni pizza, but she does not like mushrooms or ham. Picky Pete likes any pizza with ham and pineapple. Picky Polly will not eat peppers or pineapple. Picky Paul likes the same kind of pizza as Picky Pete, but he also likes pepperoni on his pizza. Which slice of pizza will each child eat? Note: For younger children just learning to use a matrix, give them straight forward clues (Picky Pam likes ham and pineapple pizza; Picky Pete likes Pepperoni and Mushroom pizza; etc.). Make up additional problems. This is a great higher level thinking activity. Sample file 6. Symmetrical Pizza Elementary: Discuss the terms symmetrical, asymmetrical and line of symmetry. Show your child the pictures of the Symmetrical Pizza and the Asymmetrical Pizza. Have him identify which pizza has a line of symmetry (be sure he is focusing on the toppings and not just the shape of the pizzas). Then give your child a copy of the plain cheese pizza and at least two copies of the pizza toppings. Ask him to cut and paste the toppings to build a symmetrical pizza. Look for lines of symmetry in other objects. 7. Pizza Clock Elementary: Following the directions on the Pizza Clock and Pizza Clock Pieces, assist your child in assembling the clock. Use the finished clock to practice telling time. Perhaps use the clock when baking your next pizza. For example, if you put your pizza in the oven at 5:30 and it needs to bake for 20 minutes, ask your child to use the pizza clock to show what time the pizza will be ready. 8. Pizza Box Art Preschool Elementary: Obtain an unused (preferably an unfolded flat ) pizza box from a local pizza restaurant. Fold the box so that the outside is blank. If

possible, show your child examples of pizza logos from various local pizza restaurants. Then ask your child to decorate the pizza box with their own logo design. 9. Pizza Circle Books Preschool Elementary: These books have many possible uses. Here are just a few suggested uses: Print multiple books. Divide books into two sets. Inside the first set write uppercase letters and inside the second set write matching lowercase letters. Play a game of concentration to match the letters. Print multiple books. Inside each book glue a picture of something (or things) that begins with the letter P. Glue all the books onto a large P poster board. Measure the pizza book. Inside the book write the diameter, radius, and circumference of the pizza circle. Write a pizza poem inside. 10. Papa Paulo s Pizzeria Menu Elementary: Using the menu, create different real-life situations that will allow your child to practice their money counting skills. Use play or real money. For younger students, begin simple. Ask them what they would like to order, and have them count out money to pay for their order. Activity suggestions for students who have some experience with counting and adding money include: Pretend your child is the waiter/waitress and you are a customer. Place an order for multiple items and have your child total your bill. Pay your child. If needed, have your child determine how much change you should receive back. Give your child an allotment of money and ask him to order a Make Your Own pizza. He must determine how many toppings he can afford to order. Ask you child how much a fully loaded Make Your Own pizza would cost (a fully loaded pizza would contain every topping listed). Set up a price comparison scenario such as the following: If a whole veggie pizza has 5 slices, is it a better deal to buy one slice or the whole pizza? (Your child will need to determine the price per slice of the whole pizza and compare that price to the By the Slice price.) Sample file 11. Pizza Fractions Bingo Elementary: This game is played like traditional Bingo. Select the cards that are appropriate for your child s level. There are 3 levels of cards with 2 cards on each level. Use any household items for Bingo markers. Before beginning the game, each player places a marker on the middle Free Slice space. Using the Bingo Calling Cards corresponding to the players Bingo cards, the caller calls out the fractions. Players place markers on their cards as each fraction is called. The player to get five markers in a row first wins.

This game can be played with more than one level of Bingo cards at a time. Just be sure to mix together all the Bingo Calling Cards for every level being played. Older students can practice equivalent fractions by using the Pizza Fractions Bingo cards with the subtitle of Fractions. The deck of calling cards contains all the possible fractions for the game. So, for example, if the Bingo caller says, one half, the players could mark the one half space or the five tenths space. One half and five tenths are equivalent fractions. A blank Bingo card and pizza fraction pieces have been included so you can build your own Bingo cards. Just cut the pizzas however you wish. Be sure to create calling cards to match your fractional pizzas. 12. Pizza Pairs Worksheet Preschool Kindergarten: A simple worksheet for your youngest student. (Follow the directions on the worksheet.) 13. Pepperoni Computation This activity can be used for all ages, kindergarten through fifth grade. There are 144 formatted pepperonis for you to cut out in squares. Included are math symbols. You can use the pepperonis to practice recognition of numbers, putting numbers in order from least to greatest or greatest to least, creating a 100s chart and analyzing the patterns, patterning, counting backwards, counting by 3s, 5s, and so forth, all types of computation, and even a Concentration like game matching numbers. The uses are almost endless. 14. Create an Italian Cookbook We have provided from delicious looking Italian dishes for you to study. Practice learning the names of these dishes with your child. Pull recipes from cookbooks or off of the internet for your family to try with your child as head chef. These recipes and pictures can be placed in a cookbook of your child s creation. Use regular sized sheets of paper. Fold them over evenly and staple the spine. Have your child decorate the front. They can either write the recipes out on notebook paper or cut and paste them in their cookbooks. Have fun as your family takes an excursion into Italian dining. Sample file 15. Counting with Gelato Gelato is an Italian ice cream. Have your child research its history and learn how it is different from the typical ice cream your child may be used to. There are some wonderful dairy free recipes available for gelato. Your child might want to add a section to their cookbook. We have created cups, cones, and waffle bowls of scoops of gelato. Use the cards for counting. Reproduce the cards several times and reinforce patterning.

16. Build Your Own Gelato Creations You also have available a sheet of containers for your child to cut out their own scoops of gelato from brightly colored paper. Have your child create interesting sounding names for each flavor. They can even create a poster displaying their concoctions with prices. This activity offers many opportunities for math computation. 17. Old Burnt Pizza Card Game Preschool Elementary: The game is played like Old Maid. The dealer deals out all of the cards to the players (it is okay if everyone doesn t have the same number of cards). The players all look at their cards and discard any matching pairs they have. The dealer begins. At your turn, you must offer your cards spread face down to the player to your left. That player selects a card from your hand without seeing it, and adds it to his hand. If it makes a pair in his hand, he discards the pair. The player who just took a card then offers his hand to the next player to his left, and so on. If you get rid of all your cards you are safe - the turn passes to the next player and you are finished playing. Eventually all the cards will have been discarded except one burnt pizza card. The holder of the burnt pizza card at the end of the game is the loser. 18. Suggested Activities for Lapbooking If you are a lapbooker this should come fairly easy to you. Others catch on quickly. This is not a lapbook kit. It s merely suggestions of how you can display the activities in this ebook in a lapbooking format. Study the photos attached and either replicate what we have done, or create your own. Keep it open-ended. If you haven t experienced the excitement of this technique, contact us and we ll provide links to some great lapbooking websites. MyTeacherBookBag@insightbb.com Sample file

Suggested Activities for Lapboxing Lapboxing provides all of the fun of lapbooking plus the space to store three dimensional objects. You can get your pizza boxes from local restaurants cheaply. We have even gotten many pizza boxes free after a meal at a restaurant. You can ask for the flats that are not folded yet and fold them in such a way that the outside design is on the inside. Construction paper can be used to cover the restaurant image. You might choose to use the store s image on the outside and share your lapbox creation with the restaurant s owner. Celebrate by having a tasty slice of pizza and nice salad!

Lapboxing Suggestions This was our pizza box before being turned inside out. It had the restaurant logo on it. Sample file This is the box turned inside out with our image of choice on it. Here we have the interior of our pizza lapbox. Some of the materials were removed so you could get an idea of a basic layout. The pizza clock is attached

with Velcro for easy removal. We also added our lapbook. The three dimensional dice have room to be stored. The baggies are also attached with Velcro. You don t have to use baggies. We chose to go with a see-through pocket to appeal to the learning style of a visual learner. Pockets can be customized with scissors and masking tape. You can get fancy with colored masking tape or keep it basic. The main thing is learn and have fun! Enjoy! We will be constantly updating Papa Paulo s Pizzeria. Updates are free to you since you purchased the original ebook. You will receive s about the ebook updates and directions on where to receive the link for new activities. If you do not accept s from CurrClick and that s where you purchased your ebook, check back from time to time. We will add notices of updates for you to access. We are in the process of creating a literacy component. Have fun with the pepperoni alphabet until then. Contact us at MyTeacherBookBag@insightbb.com With questions, comments, or suggestions.
