1 REPORT OF THE STANDNG COMMTTEE ON GERMPLASM AND BREEDNG The actvtes of the Commttee have been lmted durng the past three years. collected durng the 1976 and 1977 cane collecton expedtons n ndonesa and Papua New Gunea have been dstrbuted to at least seven locatons, other than Canal Pont, Florda and Australa. These clones should be completng quarantne n the recpent countres and wll be evaluated durng the next three years for ther breedng potental. Durng 1981 several members of the Commttee met n Belle Glade, Florda wth Dr. J. T. Wllams, Executve Secretary, nternatonal Board for Plant Genetc Resources (BPGR), Plant Producton and Protecton Dvson, Food and Agrculture Organzaton of the Unted Natons, to dscuss the status of the sugar cane germplasm collectons. MEETNG WTH BPGR Sugar cane workers meetng wth Dr. Wllams of the BPGR were: J. D. Mller, Canal Pont, Florda (who served as charman and host); D. J. Henz, Aea, Hawa; Krshnamurth, Fj; M. Nadu, Combatore, nda; B. Roach, Macknade, Australa; S. Sastrapradjo, Bogor, ndonesa;. Walker, Groves, Barbados. Also present and contrbutng was J. rvne, Houma, Lousana. "The Workng Group agreed that: a) There has been a loss of clones from exstng collectons due to mantenance problems; moreover, there has been lttle coordnaton of nformaton between exstng collectons. b) Wld genomes are threatened n certan areas. c) The crop s a major world crop and has mportant soco-economc features. d) The crop s also of mportance n rural development. e) Evaluaton, especally characterzaton of exstng collectons s urgent; and f) the crop has great potental for fuel and fbre." WORLD GERMPLASM COLLECTONS - Summarzed n Table 1 are the number of clones by general and speces represented n the two world collectons. Dspersal of clones was about the same as for the prevous three years (Table 2). The dstrbuton of clones from the 1976 (ndonesan) and 1977 (Papua, New Gunea) collectons s shown n Table 3. HENZ Charman Standng Commttee on Germplasm and Breedng REPORT OF THE STANDNG COMMTTEE ON SUGAR CANE QUALTY AND MECHANCAL HARVESTNG The actvtes of ths commttee have been confned to the publcaton of two bblographes, one on the <<Qualty of Sugar Cane)) and the other on <<Agrcultural Engneerng n Sugar Cane)). Both publcatons ncorporate references from prevous bblographes and addtonal references receved from varous research organzatons and these are gratefully acknowledged. Edtng and publshng the bblographes were undertaken by the Experment Staton of the South Afrcan Sugar Assocaton. t was an arduous task whch warrants partcular acknowledgement. Copes of the bblographes were posted to 117 research organzatons n November The bblographes should be updated regularly and ths should be the responsblty of the dscplnes nvolved: Plant Physology and Agrcultural Engneerng. The SASA Experment Staton has offered to be responsble for the Agrcultural Engneerng bblography whle Dr. James rvne (USDA, Houma, Lousana), s prepared to accept responsblty for the Sugar Cane Qualty Bblography. f the Councl agrees that the bblographes should be contnued, the offers of both the SASA Experment Staton and Dr. rvne, should be accepted. Panel dscussons on cane qualty and mechancal harvestng were held at the XV and XV Congresses. The Commttee s of the opnon that the effects of mechancal harvestng on sugar cane qualty have been suffcently elucdated durng the dscussons n SSCT papers and n other publcatons. t s therefore suggested that the Standng Commttee on Sugar Cane Qualty and Mechancal Harvestng be dsbanded untl ts re-nstatement s warranted. COMMTTEE MEMBERSHP At the XV Congress t was resolved that commttee membershp should be reduced to fve n order to facltate the workng of the commttee. The followng were apponted executve mekbers: C. Rcaud (Maurtus, Charman), R. Baley (South Afrca), B. T. Egan (Australa), A. G. Gllaspe Jr. (USA) and S. Matsuoka (Brazl). Ths change n membershp has met ts objectves. Jn addton other prevous members from varous countres from dfferent countres and geographcal regons acted as correspondent members. t s recommended that there should be no change n the composton of the executve membershp except that Dr. A. '( G. Gllaspe Jr. be apponted as charman to replace Dr. C. Rcaud who has 1 notfed hs ntenton to pass on the charmanshp. DSTRBUTON LST OF DSEASES A multlngual lst of names of dseases was prepared by Messrs. C. Rcaud and P, Baudn (French), S. Flores (Spansh) and S. Matsuoka (Portuguese). t s! proposed that the multlngual terms be accepted as the offcal names of the dseases n the dfferent languages and that they be ncluded n the revsed dsease dstrbuton lst. Several amendments n pathogen names and dstrbuton records have been brought to the lst. The executve commttee strongly recommends that the revsed lst be prnted n the proceedngs, especally snce t was not prnted n the 1980 proceedngs. SUGAR CANE PATHOLOGSTS' NEWSLETTER ssue numbers 26 to 28 of the Newsletter were publshed by USDA under the edtorshp of Dr. A. G. Gllaspe to whom the commttee s thankful. Dr. Gllaspe also edted ssue No. 29 whch was publshed by the Bureau of Sugar Exper- 1 ment Statons, Queensland. The rsng cost of publshng and dstrbutng the newsletter free of charge to recpents s cause for concern. So far ths has been borne by a few nsttutons n turn. Consderaton has to be gven to some fnancng from socety funds or to seekng contrbuton from recpents.

5 BOOK ON DSEASES OF SUGAR CANE Progress on the edtng of the new book enttled Dseases of Sugar Cane has been slow.
