9 THE EASY ABC OF Rose Care WHAT TO DO & WHEN TO DO IT Spring - Planting new roses - Feeding in September - Starting a regular spraying programme - Starting regular watering when necessary Summer - Planting new roses - Feeding in November - Regular summer spraying programme - Regular watering - Summer pruning Autumn - Feeding in February - Regular summer spraying - Regular watering - Summer pruning until the end of March, then leave plants to go into dormant phase Planting Prepare the site by digging in Tui Rose & Shrub Compost (2/3 soil to 1/3 compost). The hole should 1/3 bigger than the root area of the new plant. Plant with a good margin between the graft and the top of the soil to allow for applying compost in the future. Tramp the soil down firmly after planting & water in. Fertiliser should only be applied to the surface of the soil after planting to avoid burning the roots. Winter Pruning Take out all thin, weak, or dead stems right out. The remaining thicker strong healthy stems should be cut back by approx 1/3. Use sharp clean secateurs, and cut the stem approx 15mm above an outward-facing group of 5 leaves or the leaf nodule (a bump on the stem). The angle of the cut should be approx 45 degrees. Summer Pruning Cut back stems as they finish flowering, taking them down to the first outward-facing group of 5 leaves & cut the stem approx 15mm above the joint on an angle of approx 45 degrees. Removing only the spent flower heads will encourage weaker new growth. Watering It s almost impossible to overwater roses and a hose trickling steadily at the base of the plant once every 10 days provides a thorough deep watering, avoiding water on the foliage which can encourage disease. Good watering encourages healthy strong new growth. Winter - Choosing & planting new roses - Winter pruning - Cleaning up leaf debris under roses - Spraying after pruning Feeding Rose foods with high potash levels, like Tui Rose Food, will maximise flowering and as roses love sheep manure, Tui SuperSheep combines these two most important elements. Sheep manure also encourages earthworms and improves soil texture. Pest & Fungus Control Winter - spray after pruning with Free Flow Copper (fungus & disease control) and Enspray 99 Oil (insect control). Spring & summer - follow two regimes to avoid any build-up of resistance: Yates Mavrik Insect & Mite Spray + Yates Fungus Fighter. Combat 3-in-1 for Roses (combo insecticide, fungicide, & fertiliser). Cnr Roydvale Ave/Wairakei Rd, Burnside, Christchurch. P E. info@terraviva.nz
