Enter our Quilt Block Contest, cash prizes are available. Just a few changes from last year, be sure to review the rule book before you enter a contest. Deadlines are firm. Judges decisions are final. The link to the Fair Entry website will be available for you to utilize at If you have a question about navigating the site, please contact us bedfordvafair@gmail.com We realize not everyone will want to use the online entry process, we will also accept paper entries. They may be mailed to Bedford County Fair Ag Competition at PO Box 1416 Bedford VA Entry deadlines are as follows: Essay Poster Contest is September 15, Mail Essay - Poster contest entries to PO Box 1461 Bedford VA or hand deliver to Southern States Bedford Co-Op at 1053 Independence Blvd. Bedford VA. Ag Competition items such as Commercial Fruit, Vegetables and Other Produce, Agricultural Crops, Baked Goods, Food Processing, Arts and Crafts, Photography and Art, Container Gardens and Quilt Block Contest is September 22, No entry fees for Essay/Poster and Ag Competitions. No last-minute entry changes will be accepted. Livestock Competition entry deadline is September 15, 2018 plus a $15 fee. Livestock entries received after the 15 th will pay a fee of $30. Absolute last day is September 22, Livestock competitors can be residents of the following counties: Bedford, Franklin, Pittsylvania, Campbell, Amherst, Botetourt, Roanoke, Montgomery, Appomattox and Nelson. No entries will be accepted after this time. All entries must be made or grown in the past year by the exhibitor who is a Town of Bedford or Bedford County resident. Check-in for Ag Competition Entries: We will accept all entries except baked goods Tuesday September 25, 2018 from 7 am to 6 pm at the Bedford County Ag Competition Room located at the Glenwood Center in Huddleston. Corner of Smith Mountain Lake Parkway and Leesville Road. Baked goods only will be accepted Wednesday, September 26 th from 7am to 6pm. Baked goods must be fresh, judges will taste them. Judging will take place Wednesday September 26, 2018 during the day. Baked goods judging that evening. During the judging process on Wednesday September 26th, the public, including exhibitors, will not be allowed in the Exhibit Hall.

2 Pick up time for all entries will be Sunday, September 30, 2018 starting at 4pm and ending at 6pm. No exhibits may be removed until release time. See exhibit coordinators to pick up your entries. It is your responsibility to pick up your entry. After this time, all entries will be considered abandoned and the fair will in no way be responsible for them. All perishable goods will be disposed of by the fair committee. No exceptions. Ribbons will be available for pick up on Sunday September 30, 2018 between 4 pm and 6 pm. All fruits, vegetables, eggs, and crops should be in their natural state. No waxing or oiling. Refer to Exhibiting Fruits and Vegetable at for recommendations on exhibiting fresh fruits and vegetables. Each entry shall be composed of specimens of only one variety or strain except where noted. PLEASE name variety on entry form. Perishable products may be removed by the Exhibit Coordinators from display after judging if the product reaches a state of decomposition. No entry will be judged unless it meets the class specifications regarding quantity and quality. If only one exhibit is entered in a category, a blue ribbon will be awarded if the judge(s) consider it representative of First Place. If exhibit is considered unworthy of first place, the judge(s) will award appropriate placing, provided exhibit is worthy. Judges reserve the right to withhold all prizes, if no exhibits are considered worthy of class. Diligence will be used to insure the safety of articles after their arrival and placement, but in no case, will the Fair staff be responsible for any loss or damage that may occur. Prizes: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place ribbons in each category as stated above. Essay - Poster, Mr. Potato Head, Largest Watermelon, The Great Pumpkin and Scarecrow contest will have cash prizes for the top 5 in each. 3 Adult & Youth Commercial Fruit, Vegetables and Other Produce A All entries will be displayed during the fair on white paper plates of appropriate size. Bring items in bags labeled with your name and entry detail. Fair staff will set up on the plates in the display area. Plates provided by the fair committee. Only one variety should be represented in an entry. Each entry can only contain the number of items listed. Any entry not meeting the quantity stated below for an entry will not be judged. All exhibits must be grown by the exhibitor. Each exhibitor is limited to one entry per class. Exhibits will be judged based on quality, condition, uniformity and correctness of kind. Entries should be uniform. Uniformity applies to size, shape and color. Eggs will be judged by both exterior and interior. One egg should be marked by exhibitor with an X made with a pencil for judging of interior. Each container will hold 6 eggs. A date and time to pick up the containers will be communicated to entrants prior to check in day.

7 Adult and Youth Baked Goods Love to bake and decorate? Show us your skills as an amateur baker-decorator. Review the guidelines below and submit your entry for the 2018 Bedford County Fair. Changes have been made for this year s competition. Sizes and age groups are specific. Display containers will be provided to entrants in advance of the fair and must be used for entry. Site, date and times for pick up will be communicated closer to fair check-in date. See rules below. Age Ranges are specific. Entries will not be accepted for children under 9 years of age. Junior Youth ages 9-12 (CJ) Youth ages (CY) Adults age 18 on up (CA) 1. Applications must be received no later than September 22, A clearly printed or typed copy of the recipe must accompany your entry form. 3. Failure to include the recipe will disqualify your entry. Incomplete entry forms will not be accepted. 4. Your entry may be entered at the Fair Entry Website ( allowing you to upload your recipe. 5. Recipes will become the property of the Bedford County Fair and can be published as determined by the Fair Committee. 6. Check-in for entries will be on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 from 7 am to 6 pm. 7. All decisions made by the judges are final. 8. Items may not be entered by professional bakers or someone employed by a food service business as a baker or decorator. 9. All entries must be made by the entrant in their home kitchen, must be fresh. 10. Tasting the baked goods is part of the judging process. 11. No mixes, store bought pie crusts, pre-made frostings may be used to produce the product. 12. No artificial materials may be used to decorate cakes, cookies, etc. 13. See each category for size and numbers of an item to prepare for entry. 14. Each contestant may enter one entry per category within a specific division. 15. Only residents of Town of Bedford or Bedford County may enter this contest. 16. Do not place your name, any special labels or logos on the food containers. 9 Food Preservation Rules 1. ENTRY DEADLINE IS SEPTEMBER 22,2018. All entries in Food Preservation must be the product of the exhibitor, made in their home kitchen within the last year and not a means of livelihood. 2. Entries in this department are limited to residents of the Town of Bedford or Bedford County. Divisions are designated as open to Adult (A) and Youth (Y) (Age 10-17). Adults are age 18 and over. 3. Entries in Adult classes are limited to ONE (1) entry per class per household/family, for a maximum of TEN (10) total class entries. Entries in Youth classes are limited to ONE (1) entry per class per exhibitor for a maximum of TEN (10) total class entries. 4. Each entry form shall identify what is in the jar (i.e., tomato, green pepper, hot pepper), when it was processed, how processed. 5. Canning jars must have jar rings and be sealed. Jar rings should be plain silver or gold and have no embellishments. No paraffin wax. Do not label the jars, labels will be made by fair committee. 6. Jams and jellies may be tasted; all other canned goods will be judged on appearance only. 7. All entries are limited to the size indicated in each category listed below. Entries submitted in any size other than the size indicated will not be accepted. Jams and Jellies 8 oz., (1/2 pint) jars NO quilted jars. Fruits, Pickles, Relishes, Salsas, Sauces, Dry Beans 1 Pint jars Tomatoes, Tomato Sauces, Vegetables 1 Quart jars 8. Use USDA RECOMMENDATIONS when preparing jars. Headspace is the unfilled space above the food in a jar and below its lid. USDA recommends headspace in specific foods as follows: Jams, Jellies, Preserves - 1/4 inch Fruits, Tomatoes, Pickles, Relishes, etc. - 1/2 inch Low Acid Foods processed in pressure canner - 1 inch to 1 1/2 inches 9. Entrant may not enter food in a division sponsored by themselves, a family member or a business or corporation in which they or another family member has an interest or is employed. LIABILITY 1. 13 Adult & Youth Arts & Crafts E Articles exhibited must be the work of the person in whose name they are entered and must have been made or completed within the last year. Entries are judged on design, appearance, color, workmanship and suitability of materials. Only one entry per person, per class allowed. Size restrictions will be strictly adhered to. Please carefully read and adhere to size restrictions and regulations as set. The Bedford County Fair Quilt Show is open to youth (age 10-17) and adult amateur quilters. Entrants must be Town of Bedford or Bedford County residents. Quilts: 1. All quilts must be clean, free of smoke or odor, constructed of fabric and quilted. 2. All entries must have been completed since September 1, There is a limit of one quilt per person, per class. A quilt may be entered in only one class. 4. Please include quilt dimensions in description field of entry form. DUE TO SPACE CONSTRAINTS FOR THE 2017 FAIR QUILT SHOW, QUILT SIZES WILL BE LIMITED. Quilts may be no larger than 50 x Quilts that do not meet these requirements will not be judged or displayed. These competitors will be notified. 6. Quilt Block Contest is open to Youth ages and Adults age 18 and up. For fairness in judging, please stitch a piece of fabric covering the name of the competitor before delivering the quilt to the Fair. An amateur exhibitor is defined as anyone who has earned less than $1,000 during the calendar year, either by selling their items, teaching the subject, doing extended exhibiting, or involving themselves in other professional related activities. Each entry should be pieced and quilted entirely by the entrant. Decorative Egg Displays Children s toys may not be used as part of the display.

18 Photography and Art F Photographs and artwork must be the sole work of the person in whose name they are entered. Artwork will be work done in pencil or watercolor. This competition is for amateurs. All photographs must be taken between September 2017 and August Artwork must be completed after September Entries will be judged on appearance, composition, tone, balance, clarity, and contrast. A name is required for your entry. Limit one entry per exhibitor per class. No frames or decorative borders. All entries must be 8 X10 and securely mounted to 11 X14 black mat. 19 Container Gardens G 1. Competitors must be residents of the Town of Bedford or Bedford County. 2. Amateurs only, professional/floral decorators or someone employed by a florist is ineligible to enter. 3. One entry per class. 4. Plants should have been in the competitor s possession and established in its container no less than three months. 5. Plants should be in prime condition and healthy. Well-groomed and clean, no dead parts or signs of insect damage. 6. Plants cannot be in individual containers within the container. 7. Entries should be well watered before arrival and have saucers or another waterproof bottom. 8. Fair staff will make every attempt to water entries throughout the fair but are not responsible for any damage or loss that may occur. 9. No artificial flowers or foliage is permitted. 10. Exhibits should not show excessive spray or oil residue. 11. A 3 x 5 index card listing all plant names, materials and interpretations must be included. 12. Whole entry should not weigh more than 30 lbs. 13. Entries with diseased, infested plants or broken containers will not be accepted at check-in. 14. Maximum three accessories per entry. 15. 21 HONEY H Purpose of including a Honey Show in the Bedford County Fair is to emphasis the importance of beekeeping to agriculture and to provide a competitive forum directed toward improvement of the products of beekeeping. All entries in the Honey show are subject to the General Rules. The general rules and the show rules must be read and adhered to. Honey Show Rules: 1. Only one entry in each class may be made by an individual or that individual s family, or that individual s apiary. 2. All entries must be the product of the exhibitor s apiary and have been produced in the current year. 3. Do not label entries, include information on entry form. 4. The exhibitor must choose which classes to place entries, but Judges may adjust classes at their discretion 5. No commercial products or displays are permitted 6. The decision of the judges in all cases will be final 7. 26 GARDEN SCARECROW CONTEST Help our farmer scare off the crows in their gardens. Create the meanest, scariest, most bewitching old crow you can in the Garden Scarecrow contest! RULES: 1. Scarecrow specifications: Height 3 to 6. Arm span is not to exceed 4 including accessories 2. Scarecrow must be secured to or combined with a 6 pointed stake. The fair will provide 5- gallon bucket filled with sand for standing your scarecrow while on display 3. Scarecrow is to be traditional farm or garden variety made of hay, straw or natural materials 4. A pumpkin, melon, gourd, or traditional head may be used, but must be securely fastened to the scarecrow s body. IF material is used, faces may be painted, sewn or drawn on burlap, cotton or muslin mat. 5. Clothing for scarecrow should be traditional with optional hat, gloves and shoes. MOST BEAUTIFUL SUNFLOWER Bring us the most beautiful sunflower from your garden. One single flower head with 8 of stalk. We will keep them in containers of water for display.
