2 Burgundy 2017 En Primeur The Vintage It s a charming vintage! You can read details about the weather of the growing season in many places, but overall it was a relatively easy year for growers. This resulted in wines that are surprisingly easy to taste with a soft fruity character, even this early in their evolution. Everyone who has tasted these wines can only marvel at how drinkable and delicious they are at such an early stage. The consensus also seems to be that the wines have the right composition to age gracefully and will retain their delicious character for years to come. Furthermore, to add to the grower s happiness, the yields have been quite high and the cellars are filled again. This is the largest vintage in quantity since Although some wines seemed a bit dilute from barrel in the summer following the harvest, the barrel aging seems to have helped them and they now show a much more balanced profile. Overall, we can only recommend these wines as they will provide pleasure for early drinking or aged for longer. This is also a very good year for whites and clearly the best white vintage since Some commentators are even calling it as better than 2014 but this probably depends on each wine. Nonetheless if you enjoy white burgundy then this is a vintage to stock up on, from the simple villages appellations to the great Grand Crus. The Market Burgundy prices are not going down unfortunately this year, if ever. Many domaines have kept their price stable but there is continuous repricing on an upward trend so some are priced higher. The secondary market took off in 2018 and great burgundies went up 30% on average in 2018! Some prices are now beyond the stratosphere and have probably left earth orbit for good. This does not seem to deter buyers As we noticed last year, growers are now reducing allocations to UK or other markets in order to make direct allocations to Asia-based importers. This means that finding your favourite burgundies is more difficult and more expensive generally. New entrants don t seem to remember or notice previous vintage prices and so are happy to pay the latest release price, which are often times higher than vintages with some age on it. Obviously this produces a buying opportunity for the canny and experienced collector who knows what to look for. These price imbalances won t last as many know how to play this game. Nonetheless for drinking there are still good domaines that aren t as sought after and can deliver just as much drinking pleasure as more well-known names. These will probably go up in value as demand for them rises too. Please look at our Good Value and Don t Miss wines for recommendations of these types of wines. There are new domaines being imported to the UK which weren t on the market a few years ago although they had a great reputation in France. Many of these are now looking to export more as the French economy struggles to produce drinkers that can support international prices. This year we offered each domaine separately in order to let buyers buy the wines they wanted without linking them to any other wines. Some are now sold out so apologies to the buyers who missed out. 9 CÔTE DE BEAUNE Domaine Ballot-Millot Made in the Roulot-School style of winemaking though without the corresponding price tag. for the moment! Highly recommended. The story at this fine domaine is one you encounter more often now in Burgundy. In 2001, a motivated, young vigneron, Charles Ballot, took over from his father. Like many talented young winemakers, he wanted to raise the bar and leave his mark for his family s domaine. His first task was to start working the soils, reducing yields, and moving from chemical treatments to more natural ones. He soon added a sorting table in the vineyards and upgraded the press and in general found ways to work more precisely in the cellar. Everything in the cellar is done to encourage finesse and delineation over sheer power. The white wines see only 10-20% new oak (maximum 25%) and are raised without battonage. They are aged 12 months in barrel, and then racked to tank for additional 6 months of refinement as is now standard procedure at more and more of the top White Wine estates in Côte D Or. The resulting wines tend toward the so-called Roulot-school of Meursault, more tensile and racy, as opposed to the fatter, honeyed and nutty style wines that dominated the landscape years ago. There is excellent delineation of the different terroirs. The wines need a little time and age well. They are on the lively, more austere side of the fence but their natural extract and concentration means they are never too lean. If you haven t familiarised yourself with these wines, you need too! 2017 Bourgogne Blanc 180 c/s In Bond (12 bts per case) year old vines in Meursault and Puligny. Lutte raisonnée, in tandem with nature. Soils are worked manually. 12 months ageing in neutral barrels followed by 4 months in tank before bottling. Tank sample. Fragrant with citrus and white blossom. Plenty of depth combined with freshness in a straightforward but complete wine. Touch of spice on the finish Points, JancisRobinson.com 2017 Meursault Narvaux 225 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) Tangy herbal and crisp citrus aroma. Impressive intensity on the palate, part fruit and part acidity, giving good balance. Lightly chewy finish Points, JancisRobinson.com 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes 340 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) 30 year old vines in Charmes 1er Cru "au-dessus " 12 months ageing in barrels (20% new) with little or no battonage, followed by 6 months in tank. 10 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières 360 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) 70 year old vines in 1er Cru of Genevrières. 12 months ageing in barrels (20% new) with little or no battonage, followed by 6 months in tank. Tank sample. Lime fruit on the nose and intense on the palate. Taut and zesty with a very slight grip adding length. Deep and long but with crisp edges Points, JancisRobinson.com 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Perrières 450 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) 35 year old vines in 1er Cru of Perrières. Clay-limestone. Very, very stony terroir. The name Perrières refers to the stones (pierres) in the vineyard. 12 months ageing in barrels (20% new), followed by 6 months in tank. Tank sample. Super-inviting aroma of citrus fruit and something between rocks and spice that is zesty and fragrant. Impressive concentration on the palate. This has depth but a very precise, clean-cut profile on the palate, with really good length Points, JancisRobinson.com +44 (0) Page 10

11 Domaine Henri Boillot "A classic vintage but not really a year of sunshine: the wines are pure, fresh and energetic," said Henri Boillot about his 2017 whites at the beginning of June. He picked his Chardonnay between August 27 and September 1 with potential alcohol levels typically around 12.5% and chaptalized to around 13%. This is a sufficiently high-octane level for Boillot, who notes that "at 14% you can't have fresh Chardonnay." The malos finished by mid-march and Boillot noted that the wines were in a quiet phase of their élevage" at the time of my visit. Acidity levels were generally between 4.2 and 4.5 grams per liter, with phs around 3.19 or 3.2, which Boillot described as a good balance. He planned to rack the 17s in mid-august and bottle them in December. Boillot now uses a maximum of 50% new oak for his premier crus (and a bit more for his grand crus) but emphasized that because he ages his wines almost exclusively in 350-liter barrels, that s really more like 35%. He feels that the '17s have superb structure to age well but will also give pleasure early Bourgogne Blanc 195 c/s In Bond (12 bts per case) The 2017 Bourgogne Blanc is in fact declassified Saint-Romain and Auxey-Duresses blended with fruit from the commune of Meursault, and it's vinified and matured in used 350-liter barrels. Wafting from glass, with notes of toasted nuts, pear and citrus fruit, it's medium-bodied, ample and incisive, with a generous core of delicately textural fruit, framed by juicy acids and concluding with a stony finish. It's one of the finest examples of the appellation to be found. 89 Points, William Kelley, Robert Parker.com 2017 Meursault 230 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) (the crop level here was a reasonable 40 hectoliters per hectare, according to Boillot): Pale, bright yellow. Fresh yellow peach and lime blossom on the very floral nose. Peachy and penetrating on the palate, a bit tart in a positive way. Boasts very good density and salty persistence. This is a sizable cuvée for Boillot, who now does all of the vineyard work in these 3.5 hectares Points, Steve Tanzer The 2017 Meursault Village is a blend of superior lieux-dits including Narvaux, En la Barre, Limuzin and Clos du Cromin this year, and the resulting cuvée is lovely. Offering up aromas of pear, fresh peach, oatmeal and honeycomb, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and elegant, with juicy acids and lovely purity, accessible but endowed with all the energy and cut that are Boillot's declared objectives Points, William Kelley, RobertParker.com 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières 515 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) (Boillot described his vines in Genevrières du Haut as "two rows away from Perrières "): Pale, green-tinged yellow. Delicate nose hints at lime zest and white flowers. Wonderfully silky and energetic on the palate but also sharply delineated and tighter today than the Charmes. Discreet citrus fruit and hazelnut flavors deliver noteworthy complexity. Finishes gripping and very long, with serious salty energy. 12 The 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières is another of the many highlights in this superlative portfolio, unfurling in the glass with aromas of green apple, citrus oil, spring blossom and oatmeal. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and complete, with impressive concentration and depth at the core, ripe but vibrant acids and a stony, precise finish Points, William Kelley, RobertParker.com 2017 Puligny Montrachet 255 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) Bright yellow-green color. Inviting aromas of white peach, flowers and noble herbs. Broad, round and dry, with its pure stone fruit flavors lifted by floral and spicy elements. A classy, classic Puligny villages with a dry, saline back end Points, Steve Tanzer Derived from the superior lieux-dits of Les Houlières, La Rousselle, Les Charmes and Les Enseignères, Boillot's 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Village exhibits pretty aromas of lemons, white peach, fresh pastry, blanched almonds and honeycomb. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and elegant, with succulent acids and a saline finish Points, William Kelley, RobertParker.com 2017 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère Monopole 545 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) Bright yellow. Lemon drop and oil, peach, hazelnut and flowers on the subtly complex nose. Tactile and brisk on entry, then thick and energetic in the middle palate, conveying a distinct impression of sweetness countered by pure saline minerality. The wine's peachy fruit hints at almost honeyed ripeness without losing its verve. Finishes with outstanding mounting length. This has the palate presence and depth of a grand cru Points, Steve Tanzer From an enclave within the premier cru Perrières, Boillot's 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère is utterly superb this year, wafting from the glass with aromas of lemon oil, mandarin orange, beeswax, iodine and subtle smoky reduction. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, satiny and layered, with striking volume and depth at the core, balanced by incisive acids that animate the long, mineral finish. Guillaume Boillot speculates that this monopole's comparative variety of mesoclimates and soil types lends the resulting wine greater complexity than would be the case with a small cuvée Points, William Kelley, RobertParker.com Red wine 2017 Bourgogne Rouge Pinot Noir 115 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) Only 2% of this wine actually comes from Bourgogne vineyards. The rest is made up out of Santenay Passetemps, Chassagne-Montrachet, Pernand-Vergelesses and Marsannay. It is bursting with energy, doing absolutely what pinot should do, leaping out of the glass and down your throat, leaving behind a beautiful mid cherry perfume. 89 Points, Five Stars, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy +44 (0) Page 12

13 Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils The large formats are very rare so be quick, as we only have a tiny volume available! For the first time in a while, we had a normal year, said winemaker Frédéric Weber about We had good yields everywhere, although not as much crop as in Three very cold weeks of winter were good for disease control and there wasn t much mildew pressure in 17, so it was an easy year. The flowering went quickly under good conditions at the end of May and the beginning of June. We had some hydric stress at the end of June but the season was fast and we had to work quickly in the vineyards. On August 20, we had the same potential alcohol levels as in 2015 but with 1.5 grams per litre higher acidity, so we had to wait for better maturity. Hot, sunny weather at the end of August resulted in some dried grapes and caused some fruit to lose acidity, but then a big rainfall at the end of the month restarted the vines. The grand crus here are now aged in just 15% new oak (except for 20% for the Corton-Charlemagne)." 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières 340 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) 120 per magnum In Bond (Individual wooden case per magnum) 250 per double magnum (3L) In Bond (Individual wooden case) 500 per methuselah (6L) In Bond (Individual wooden case) (from a crop level of 45 hectoliters per hectare): Aromas of lemon and lime oil, hazelnut and vanillin oak come across as rich and fully ripe but lively. In a distinctly rich, pliant, almost glyceral style, showing hints of banana and exotic fruits. Perhaps a bit overbearing in the early going, and slightly phenolic on the finish, but this rather reticent wine is evolving slowly. Weber provided an approximation of the final blend, as the Genevrières du Bas vines were picked on September 6 and the estate's higher-altitude parcel on September 11. The two lots were vinified separately and the barrels will not be combined until the first racking in July or August. (14% alcohol) Points, Steve Tanzer Two plots, one up one down. Pale primrose colour. The bouquet has an intriguing mix of confectionary from the oak plus some dried herbs from the vineyard. This builds very well to the back, a little touch of caramel which will get straightened out before bottling. Very much a mineral style on the palate through with the ripe bacon fat notes behind. Powerful, thick, rich and deep; wonderfully silky and broad but with terrific spicy acidity giving it a light touch. This is extract-rich for a yield of nearly 45 hectoliters per hectare. Finishes tactile, dry and long, with an impression of tannic spine and repeating nutty nuances Points, Steve Tanzer Clear bright primrose, very striking nose, a touch of attractive straight-off-the-stones reduction, delicious tense fruit of anything blowsy. Compellingly silky, rich and sweet, with its ripe citrus flavors joined by spices, wild herbs and anise. For all its early mid-palate appeal, this wine finishes classically dry and firm, with an almost tannic impression and great rising, palate-saturating length. Wonderfully classy and light on its feet, this wine boasts the strongest projection of inner-mouth aromatics of all of these 2017s to this point. And it's more marked by its high altitude and chalky soil than by the vintage. Then richer, deeper and chewier in the mouth, conveying an almost aggressive quality to its flavors of ripe yellow fruits (pineapple?), citrus peel, menthol and saline minerality. Largerscaled and more backward, finishing with a tannic impression and serious weight. This doesn't offer the early sex appeal of the estate's other Chevalier-Montrachet but then it's a bit more Montrachet than Chevalier in style this year. A finishing note of iodine extends the dry, classic finish. (13.9% alcohol) Points, Steve Tanzer Pale primrose. The bouquet is more backward than the straight Chevalier. There is a greater wealth of fruit at the front of the palate but it continues right across without changing too much in character. The exotic notes are less evident than the regular Chevalier, there is a marvellous concentration of flesh. Good acidity too at the back. The fattest and largest of these '17s, both more tactile and sweeter than the Cabotte. Much easier to taste today as well, owing to its ripe yellow fruit flavors. But this also shows more energy than the Cabotte and finishes with a serious tannic spine and the rocky minerality to support a slow evolution in bottle. While showy already, this should be long-lived in the context of its vintage. Bouchard harvested its Chevalier-Montrachet and Montrachet vineyards between September 6 and 8 in (14% alcohol) Points, Steve Tanzer Fine pure primrose colour. A very distinguished nose with a wealth of aristocratic fruit. As ever this needs teasing out while the wines is so young. Seamless intensity, really fills every last corner of the mouth, a tiny touch of heat at the back and a few toasty barrel notes. But this will come together very well. 16 Domaine Comte Armand Paul Zinetti has very much come into his own as the regisseur at Domaine du Comte Armand, especially since Benjamin Leroux must have been a hard act to follow! These are lovely wines from top to bottom and we highly recommend them to you, take note of what Neal Martin has to say in his introduction it s not just the top wine that you should be buying - these are extremely elegant wines this year. Don t overlook the Bourgogne Aligoté probably one of the finest being made today. The 2017s from Comte Armand show genuine succulence and freshness and precocious style; they are wines designed to give pleasure. Neal Martin 2017 Auxey-Duresses 132 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The 2017 Auxey-Duresses Village has a well-defined, slightly earthy bouquet of attractive black fruit. The medium-bodied palate features notes of bilberry and veins of black olive, the modest 12% new oak lending a smooth sheen. The saline, quite rounded finish suggests that this will make fine early drinking Points, Neal Martin 2017 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru 174 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The 2017 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru, a blend of two vineyards and, unlike 2015 and 2016, completely destemmed, has a deeper, slightly blacker nose than the Village Cru, certainly displaying more mineralité at this primordial stage. The well-defined palate is taut and linear, displaying impressive backbone considering the appellation in question. This is a great Auxey-Duresses, full of tension and vigor, offering lovely blackberry, black olive and saline notes toward the finish. Don t overlook this gem from Comte Armand Points, Neal Martin 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets 360 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The 2017 Volnay Les Frémiets 1er Cru comes from a single parcel including a plot of 92-year-old vines that was on the cusp of being pulled up after the 2016 frost. It has a lovely, expressive, transparent bouquet of brambly red fruit, sous-bois and rose petal scents. The elegant, pure palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and raspberry and red plum notes, the 8% whole bunches lending a little je ne sais quoi toward the precise finish. 17 2017 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux 594 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The 2017 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru was tasted from different sectors of the vineyard. The first sample, tasted directly from tank, comes from two parcels, one at the bottom part of the clos populated by 45- to 65-year-old vines on clay-rich soils, and another located in a plot of 35- to 38-year-old vines. This has a precise, focused bouquet of black cherries, bilberry, a touch of oyster shell and just a hint of blue fruit. The 30% new oak is neatly integrated. The medium-bodied palate shows supple tannins laced with a fine bead of acidity. It exerts a gentle grip and feels quite saline toward the finish. A second sample from limestone soils demonstrates a little more amplitude and a higher percentage of red fruit, not to mention a silkier finish, while a third sample from 86- to 98-year-old vines provides the floral scents and the persistency, perhaps the intellect, of what will be the final blend. This does not possess quite the persistency of the greatest Clos des Epeneaux that I have encountered, yet it is undoubtedly a beautifully made wine Points, Neal Martin 2017 Bourgogne Aligoté 78 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The 2017 Bourgogne Aligoté is aged in 600-liter barrels and stainless steel and includes both estate vines and purchased grapes from Meursault. The attractive honeysuckle and acacia bouquet shows touches of orange pith. The forward, generous palate is well balanced with slightly low acidity, revealing hints of lime, nectarine and pineapple on the finish. Fine. 18 Domaine Darviot-Perrin 2017 white Burgundies should be taken seriously: classically balanced and beautifully defined by site, these white Burgundies are less tangy and tensile than the 2014s, but they approach and sometimes surpass that vintage in quality. There is a succulence and plenitude to the 2017 whites that makes them very appealing indeed, Darviot-Perrin is one of these domaines. The focus with Domaine Darviot-Perrin is on producing the best possible fruit with minimal intervention in the cellar to create beautifully focused and pure wines. Darviot-Perrin has holdings in all of Meursault s finest 1er Cru sites, including Charmes, Genevrières and Les Perrières. They also have the superbly situated Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Blanchot-Dessus which abuts the Le Montrachet vineyard in our mind a Grand Cru in all but name and price! In the 1800s this vineyard was actually part of Le Montrachet. Darviot-Perrin s vines are exceptionally old, mostly over 50 years, but some are over 100 years old this age gives them power and concentration as well as consistent yields. They adopt an organic mind-set, but have chosen to remain uncertified. The cellars are some of the coldest in Burgundy, fermentations are slower than elsewhere and this can mean later bottling and shipping than other producers though we can assure you it s worth the wait! 2017 Meursault Clos de la Velle 240 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) From vines planted in the 1950 s. Clos de la Velle is a small walled vineyard, a monopole of the Darviots, situated just by the border of Puligny Montrachet. Lively and fresh with lemon-sherbet notes. Good balance and vivacity 16+ Points, JancisRobinson.com 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes 415 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) From vines planted in the 1950 s. Ultra-fresh aromas of white orchard fruit, acacia blossom and hazelnut real energy here. A lovely combination of power and refinement Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières 455 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) From vines planted in 1951 and located just north of Les Perrières. Badly affected by frost in 2016, but back with a bang in 2017! Mealy, steely and smoky a lovely combination. Sound, ripe apple fruit in support with vibrato acidity that really brings everything together. Doesn't seem quite as broad as their Genevrières, but it has fearsomely impressive fruit power on the palate and finish. Chalky texture, bitter-lemon fruit and a slight cereal taste right at the end. 19 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Blanchot-Dessus 560 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) Tiny, 50 year old 1er Cru vineyard situated immediately to the south of Montrachet, known to locals as Pieds du Montrachet. Blanchots-Dessus is located just south of Montrachet i.e. on the Chassagne side of Montrachet. Blanchots Dessus is located above Criots Batard-Montrachet, and is one of the smallest 1er crus in Chassagne with a total area of 1.17 ha. Fatter and creamier than their Meursaults, perhaps counter-intuitively. Vivid, tangy acid and full body with a generous but balanced fruit intensity. Lovely clarity of fruit cherry, redcurrant and cranberry. Appetising bitterness, yet full ripeness too. Fine-tuned tannin with well-integrated acidity. 20 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard After they were decimated by frost in 2016, they lost 2/3 of their production, it is a pleasure to be able to offer such a selection of such high-quality wines. Don t miss out on the Chassagne Montrachet Rouge selection, so often overlooked by UK buyers these offer stunning value for money compared to reds from the Côte de Nuits and are snapped up by the French restaurants as they overdeliver on quality & price! Céline Fontaine, who has been working with her father Richard since 2007 and has recently taken over responsibility for winemaking, showed me a consistently superb set of 2017s from what she described as a good dry summer with a good crop. The 2017 vintage, she told me, brought very clean fruit and a lot of small golden berries. I tasted entirely from barrels made by Tonnellerie Minier, located in nearby Chagny, for which Richard Fontaine selects the wood. Steve Tanzer 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 165 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) (tasted from a new barrel): Pure aromas of pear, spices and menthol. Sweet, easygoing wine with fairly soft acidity but adequate cut to its ripe flavors of lemon drop and flowers. Finishes with good balance and persistence. This wine should offer early pleasure Points, Steve Tanzer 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos St Jean 220 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) Bright, light straw-yellow. Aromas of pear and lemon drop are enlivened by a floral topnote. Showing less early sweetness than the village wine but this slightly reduced premier cru is more mineral-driven and refined, with its lime blossom flavor conveying an impression of sappiness. Nicely balanced, firm and long Points, Steve Tanzer 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Grande Montagne 220 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) Bright lemon-yellow color. Aromas of pear and menthol plus a slightly funky note of reduction. Offers good intensity but a bit short on give and flavor complexity, not to mention flesh, with its lemon and rocky mineral elements coming across as drier than the last few examples. Just a suggestion of green acidity here. (just 12.3% potential alcohol, chaptalized to 13%, as these relatively young vines on very shallow soil struggled to ripen) Points, Steve Tanzer +44 (0) Page 20

21 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes 225 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) (just two barrels made; this vineyard was brutalized by frost in 2016, yielding just one feuillette of wine, making it the family's smallest cuvée along with its '16 Montrachet): Bright pale yellow. Inviting ripe aromas of pear, wild herbs and flowers, plus a distinct rocky element. At once dense and bright, and a step up in gras from the Grande Montagne. Intense lemon and white peach flavors are energized on the back end by a hint of grapefruit zest and subtle florality. I like the combination of breadth and weightlessness here Points, Steve Tanzer 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers 225 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) Pale, bright yellow. Highly nuanced nose combines mirabelle, citrus fruits, wild herbs and menthol. Quite inviting and nicely balanced, but also conveys an impression of strong dry extract to its sweet fruit and herb flavors. Finishes tactile and long, with a captivating blend of fruits and flowers. An impeccable and sexy Chassagne premier cru in the making. "Like Maltroie, Les Vergers seduces when it's young," notes Céline Fontaine Points, Steve Tanzer 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Boudriotte 230 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) (from red soil in the lieu-dit Les Fairendes; one of the three sets of vines here is 100 years old, according to Fontaine): Bright, light yellow. Vibrant perfume of lemon peel and lime blossom. Dense, supple and silky, offering excellent definition to its citrus, floral and powdered stone flavors. Spreads out and mounts slowly on the echoing, rising finish Points, Steve Tanzer 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanée 345 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) A note of herbal reduction to the aromas and flavors of citrus zest, white flowers and rock. A broad, dry, large-scaled premier cru that stands out in the early going for its uncanny volume and silkiness. An outstanding rocky, floral example of its vineyard but still a baby and in need of longer élevage. Finishes with palate-dusting solidity and notes of pineapple and mint. This slow-ripening vineyard always produces wine with relatively low ph and higher acidity, like the Vergers, according to Céline Fontaine Points, Steve Tanzer 2017 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet, Grand Cru 395 c/s In Bond (3 bts per case) (these old vines, some of which were planted in the 1930s, produce very small grapes and "never a big yield," according to Fontaine): Bright lemon-yellow. The nose offers a wet stone aroma along with an element of honey. Fat and dense, even glyceral, but with surprising lemony acidity neutralizing its slight impression of sweetness. Conveys an impression of substantial alcohol but not particularly honeyed in the mouth. Finishes savory and smooth, with lovely building length. 22 2017 Bâtard-Montrachet, Grand Cru 410 c/s In Bond (3 bts per case) (the Fontaines' vines are ideally situated on the Chassagne side of Bâtard, not far from the border with Puligny): More reduced and less pristine on the nose than the Criots-Bâtard. Then dense, tactile and very deep on the palate, conveying terrific definition and floral lift for young Bâtard. Like the best of these '17s, this shows a captivating sweet/salty quality. Finishes vibrant, tactile and very long, with outstanding mineral grip. Like the Criots-Bâtard, this wine is carrying a healthy four grams per liter of acidity, notes Céline Fontaine. Its impression of strong dry extract suggests that it has the stuffing to age slowly and gracefully Points, Steve Tanzer 2017 Le Montrachet, Grand Cru 375 per bottle In Bond (1 bt per case) (one new barrel out of one and three-quarters; I tasted it from a one-year-old feuillette): Rich but tight nose hints at pear liqueur, menthol, stone and iodine. Thick and voluptuous but backward and unevolved, with its pear and menthol flavors supported by a strong mineral spine. 23 Domaine Giboulot Emmanuel Giboulot has been one of the pioneers in organic viticulture and gained notoriety in 2015 when he decided not to spray his vineyards against the insects that carry a vine disease as was mandated by the region. He narrowly escaped prison but was fine for his refusal. In 2017, Giboulot s wines really shine and are bursting with fruit. The whites are nervous and taught. The reds are crunchy and long. 24 Domaine Pernot Belicard This small six-hectare domaine located in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet is making rapid strides. Philippe Pernot (a scion of the Paul Pernot dynasty) launched the Pernot Belicard label in 2009, gradually selling less and less to the négociants. In the vineyards, he cultivates the soils, de-buds aggressively and takes pains to retain his old vines in good health. The grapes are harvested by hand, with Philippe typically among the earlier pickers in the village. Since 2014, there's more sorting, the grapes passing over a shaker table before being whole cluster pressed. Initially, the wines were bottled to make room for the new vintage, but Philippe, evidently an enquiring mind, felt that something was missing: now, the wines stay in barrel until August, but spend an additional three to six months in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks with the fine lees. The result, he contends (and I concur), are wines that are more integrated and complete. These are already very good wines, and Philippe possesses some enviable parcels, but it is his desire to refine and improve that marks this out as an estate to watch. William Kelly 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Perrières 360 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) Pernot's finest wine is the 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Perrières, a beautiful cuvée in the making that wafts from the glass with aromas of crisp yellow orchard fruit, hazelnut cream and lemon oil. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny textured and incisive, with tangy acids and a deep, broad shouldered mid-palate that's impressively powerful but reserved, concluding with a long finish. William Kelley 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières 285 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Perrières is excellent, revealing scents of waxy lemon rind, mandarin oil, grapefruit, crushed chalk and white flowers. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and concentrated with a fleshy core controlled by tangy acids and a precise, mineral finish. Of Pernot's three Puligny premiers crus, it's the most serious and structurally reserved. William Kelley 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet 275 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet is very impressive, revealing lovely aromas of waxy lemon rind, mandarin, dried white flowers and a subtle touch of musky peach on the upper register. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, glossy and textural, with a fleshy, dramatic core of fruit underpinned by an attractive line of animating acidity, concluding with a saline finish. This is a frontloaded but serious Champ Canet that should offer a broad drinking window. William Kelley 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 185 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) From vines averaging 45 years of age, the 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Village displays an expressive bouquet of ripe citrus fruits, apple blossom and blanched almonds, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and succulent palate that's pure, elegant and fleshy in profile. This will drink well on release. William Kelley 2017 Meursault Vieilles Vignes 180 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) A blend of the lieux-dits Pellans and Les Pelles Dessus, the 2017 Meursault Vieilles Vignes reveals suggestions of green orchard fruit, hazelnut and fresh peach. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, open-knit and fleshy, though what I suspect is its inherent exuberance is a little suppressed by its recent bottling. William Kelley +44 (0) Page 24

Smells ripe and sweet and generous in its red fruit. A touch peppery. Gorgeous harmony between ripe, fresh, generous fruit and well-modulated structure. Succulent, fine, mildly chewy and seems remarkably accessible even now. Very, very long. 26 From a cool, stony parcel that's influenced by the Combe Grisard, this is the pick of the Faiveley grands crus in 2017, making the best of its fresher terroir. Smoky, scented and alluring, it has well-handled wood, 40% new. It's a precise, elegant, chiselled red with sweet summer-pudding flavours and a chalky aftertaste. 97 Points, Tim Atkin MW, Decanter 2017 Charmes-Chambertin, Grand Cru 650 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The holding comes from Dupont-Tisserandot plus some purchased grapes from the plot that runs lengthways alongside the Route des Grands Crus. Fine medium purple. The nose is explosively heady as the best Charmes should be, hugely enticing. Plenty of new oak showing at the moment but it adds to the raspberries and cream style and does not dry the wine out. Here the wood regimen is no longer subtle though it stops short of masking the beautifully layered aromas of plum, spice, dark currant and freshly turned earth. Inexpressive and backward on the nose but quite pure, hinting at pineapple, white peach, citrus peel and menthol. Then juicy and penetrating in the mouth, conveying a stronger impression of acidity and salinity than the Bienvenue; this wine is more floral, while the Bienvenue shows more lemon and mandarin orange fruitiness. Here the easy fruit is already disappearing and the terroir is beginning to emerge owing to a very early malolactic fermentation (in January), but this powerful, sappy grand cru will need time to evolve in bottle Points, Steve Tanzer In a very good year for the white grands crus of the Côte de Beaune (provided people didn't pick too late), this stylish expression of the terroir is right up there with the very best of them. Super-tangy, elixir of youth but with the concentration and breeding immediately obvious. Deep, long and with the oak evident at this moment but just right for the fruit concentration. Unusually ripe on the nose for a wine normally marked by its citrus character, projecting aromas of pineapple, coconut, menthol and wet stone lifted by wild herbs. Concentrated and quite primary, with its ripe nectarine fruit framed by harmonious acidity and firm mineral spine. The long finish features a hint of saline chewiness and a light touch. Big and so primary, you could almost be tasting the grapes. Spicy and so creamy on the palate it is almost thick. But the acidity is high. Not meshed yet but the components seem balanced. Captivating aromas of lemon zest, lemon drop and lavender. Very rich and concentrated, with ripe stone fruit and lemon drop flavors complicated by savory minerality. Tactile, spicy and light on its feet, but not as silky or deep as some of the other cru bottlings at this address. Finishes with a hint of raw pineapple and a menthol edge. Faiveley doesn't own this plot but does all the work in the vines; still, the yield here was in the range of 50 to 52 hectoliters per hectare, vs. around 40 in most of the estate holdings in Points, Steve Tanzer 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne 300 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) Cask sample. More spicy and stony than the Referts, less creamy in aroma. Lemon and just-ripe apricot. Wonderful balance between intensity and freshness. Power and precision with a great future. 28 Domaine Georges Noëllat We will be releasing the wines from Domaine Georges Noëllat one year late, as Maxime Cheurlin seems to need a bit more time before releasing his wines, in line with other top names like Dujac and Rousseau. The comparison is apt as his wines have reached superstardom and soar on the secondary market. All the wines below will be at a higher price everywhere else now. Maxime is only 27 but has made a name for himself very quickly after taking over his grandmother s domaine. He has also managed to expand his domaine by adding a few new cuvées, some of which we are offering for the first time this year. Be quick to grab the new allocations! The 2016s are very seductive and have the characteristic vibrancy of the vintage. Maxime lost 40% of some wines due to frost so quantities available are not large Beaune 1er Cru Les Tuvilains 245 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The sophomore 2017 Beaune Les Tuvilains 1er Cru is matured in 40% new oak. The tightly-knit red cherry and crushed strawberry bouquet is quite minerally and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, plenty of sweet red fruit and a slight confit note on the finish. Impressive Points, Neal Martin 2017 Nuits-St-Georges 275 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Village comes from two different climats and was matured in one-third new oak. The bouquet is very intense, featuring dark cherry, cassis and subtle iodine aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, fine grip, good volume for a Village Cru and a grippy, quite dense finish. This will probably peak after most of the bottles have been drunk Points, Neal Martin 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin "En Champs" Maxime Cheurlin 275 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) This is a blend of 70-year-old vines from En Champs and 60-year-old vines from Aux Echezeaux, on the borders of Morey. It is quite delicious. Fragrant, focused fruit with freshness and definition and real drive on the long finish. Very lovely Vosne-Romanée 295 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) This is a blend of fruit from most of Vosne s top village sites which delivers exceptional quality for a village wine. There is richness but bite, complexity yet accessibility and a generosity of fruit that will make giving it the necessary time to age that it deserves very diffcult. A real winner. Bright, dark ruby-red. Aromas of dark berries and licorice. Intense flavors of black fruits, violet and licorice combine a pliant texture with very good energy. This is in my view a very welcomed addition to the program (I adore this terroir). The bouquet is brimming with vibrant red fruit and Chambolle minerality love the limestony notes and the pomegranate hints of Chambolle. On the palate lively red fruit cool and very juicy offering so much energy and drink-ability. It s a intense and effortless Les Feusselottes.. will provide gorgeous drinking. Very Fine Winehog 2017 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Aux Cras 495 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Cras 1er Cru has a more elegant, refined bouquet compared to the Aux Boudots this year, displaying very fine delineation to the pure, precocious mulberry and blackberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, layers of lightly tarred black fruit and a rounded, quite sensual finish that lingers in the mouth. Recommended Points, Neal Martin 2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes 520 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru has a tightly wound, slightly earthy bouquet with scents of kirsch, blueberry and violet, quite showy but kept on a tight leash. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, gentle grip and quite a dense, minerally finish that lingers in the mouth. There is a discreet confit element here. Good potential, because you can feel the energy Points, Neal Martin 2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Petits Monts 720 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The 2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Petits Monts displays a beautiful bouquet of sweet wild berries, candied peel and violets, complemented by deeper bass notes of raw cocoa and rich soil tones. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, pure and layered, with satiny tannins, a bright line of animating acidity and a long, vibrant finish Points, William Kelley 2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 900 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts is completely de-stemmed and raised in 100% new oak. Now this has a great bouquet: very well defined with intense black cherry and kirsch aromas, deftly controlled and focused. The medium-bodied palate displays dense tannin, and the new oak is quite vocal at the moment but should be subsumed with bottle age. Do I think less new oak would have been preferable? Yes. 30 Domaine Henri Gouges After frost devastated much of Gouges s vines in 2016, at least this year there is not just a full complement of wine but a new addition that comes from their Premier Cru Les Crots. Gouges opted to bottle the six barrels separately instead of blending it into the Village Cru, and mighty fine it is, too. Since he dislikes the name of the vineyard, he has christened it Cuvée Fontaine Jacquinots, which does sound more attractive. The wines this year should appeal most to those who don t necessarily want to cellar their wines for 15 years before they re ready a lovely set of wines! 2017 Nuits-St-Georges Clos Fontaine de la Jacquinot 225 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Cuvée Fontaine Jacquinots comes from the lieu-dit of Les Crots. It is usually blended into the Village Cru, but because of the abundant quantity, Grégory Gouges decided to bottle this separately and, for the first time at the domaine, used 50% stems. The bouquet is clean and fresh, crushed stone and undergrowth scents filtering through the brambly black fruit. The fresh, vibrant palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit and a fine bead of acidity, and the stems are very nicely assimilated into the fabric of the wine. This is a lovely Nuits Saint-Georges and yes, it will appear in Six barrels produced Points, Neal Martin One plot from within Les Crots vineyard, separated out for some whole bunch vinification (50%) to see what that gives at a domaine which usually destems everything. The colour is very similar to the regular Nuits, possibly a touch more purple. There is a heady vibrant nose, cherries and dark strawberries. More sensual, almost ethereal, has avoided extracting anything tough. Very persistent. 91 Points (4 Stars), Jasper Morris MW, InsideBurgundy.com 2017 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Porrets-St-Georges 250 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets-Saint Georges 1er Cru has an attractive bouquet of black cherries, bilberry jam, a touch of blue fruit and just a hint of licorice. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit. There is an initial burst and then everything clamps back down so that the second half is structured and grippy. Lacks a little charm at the moment but give this time in bottle Points, Neal Martin In barrel, more backward, much darker purple, a definite reduction and a slightly more austere style anyway. A wealth of dark cherry fruit on the palate, slightly toughened by the reductive element which will depart, good fresh acidity at the back too, and the fruit finishes a little fresher than it starts. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red and black fruit laced with blood orange and spices. Quite dense and grippy, this is another Gouges 2017 that will require several years in bottle Points, Neal Martin In barrel, glowing purple of medium depth. There is a very attractive weight of fruit here, in a slightly fuller, riper style, some dark notes impinging on the lively red fruit. Multi-layered and with a wellbalanced finish. Again more a fruit acid balance than tannins Points (4 Stars), Jasper Morris MW, InsideBurgundy.com 2017 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les St Georges 595 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a refined, harmonious bouquet of blackberry and bilberry aromas penetrated by a slight flintiness. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and beautifully integrated oak. Seamless in texture, leading to a poised, pure finish. This is easily the best of Gouges s 2017s. Superb Points, Neal Martin Dense red purple, a beautiful colour. Pure fine and noble bouquet too. A couple of light chocolate notes along with the fruit that is perfectly on the cusp of red and black. This is beautifully mouth-filling without finding exaggerated density, a serene wine which shows off the terroir beautifully. There are slightly more tannins here than elsewhere in the range but the fruit covers them beautifully and the acidity mixes in perfectly. 32 Domaine Jean Grivot The Grivot family picked comparatively late in 2017, opting to wait for rain in the hope of unblocking retarded maturation. The result is a silky, open-knit and accessible vintage for this important 15.5-hectare Vosne- Romanée domaine, a range of wines displaying suave structures and an appealing purity of fruit. The wines are nicely balanced and immensely charming, so they will offer broad drinking windows. Siblings Mathilde and Hubert are now at the helm, guided by father Etienne, in what appears to be one of the most felicitous generational transitions to be found in all of Burgundy. Winemaking will be familiar to readers, having evolved in the direction of gentler extraction and greater transparency since the 2008 vintage: destemmed grapes retained intact, classical cuvaisons of some three weeks' duration with mostly pumping over, and élevage in oak barrels. An impromptu tasting, brought forward to avoid a planned racking, meant that there wasn't time to taste an extensive selection of bottled 2016s, so I'll be returning soon. William Kelley 2017 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots 695 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots displays notes of sweet wild berries, spices, rose petal, orange rind and potpourri, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny palate that's plush, layered and fragrant, with a deep core of fruit and a long, stony finish. This is a high-class Boudots that is performing very well from barrel. William Kelley 2017 Chambolle Musigny Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d Orveau 312 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The mouthfeel of the less concentrated but notably more mineral-driven flavors is much finer but even so the linear and compact finish is very tightly wound. This beautifully delineated effort is excellent but it's definitely going to require extended patience Points, Outstanding, Top Value Burghound +44 (0) Page 32

33 Domaine Anne Gros Anne Gros is happy with her 2017 vintage, a portfolio of supple, open-knit wines which she says have gained depth and complexity with élevage. It's a range that will drink well out of the gates, whereas in the more serious 2016s which I revisited from bottle will merit a bit of bottle age. Readers who have followed this domaine over the years will have noticed that since the early 2000s house style has become less extracted and less oaky. Who, tasting Anne's early vintages, could have imagined a future in which her Richebourg would mature in merely one-third new oak? To my palate, it's a positive evolution. Today, purity of fruit and suavity of structure, are the watchwords at this address, and while Anne is sanguine about her wines' aging potential, counseling drinking them between ages five and fifteen, I suspect that at the very least her grands crus are sufficiently well balanced to significantly surpass that conservative recommendation. William Kelley, RobertParker.com 2017 Richebourg, Grand Cru 1185 c/s In Bond (3 bts per case) Domaine Anne Gros owns 0.60 ha of Richebourg, 50% are 50 year old vines, and 50% 75 year old vines. Low yield of 25hl/ha consider the generosity of this vintage. The 2017 Richebourg Grand Cru reveals a lovely bouquet of Asian spices, plums, raspberries and rose petal, with only subtle hints of the savory nuances of soil and espresso to come with bottle age. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with satiny tannins and a broad, open-knit profile. This is a precocious, dramatic Richebourg in the making, and while it will never rival the depth and concentration Gros achieved in 2016 and 2015, it will certainly turn heads in its youth. William Kelley 2017 Clos Vougeot Le Grand Maupertui, Grand Cru 465 c/s In Bond (3 bts per case) Domaine Anne Gros owns a 0.94 hectare parcel with an average age of 80 year old vines. A generous yield of 42hl/ha in Gros' old vines have produced a superb 2017 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru Le Grand Maupertui, a wine that wafts from the glass with complex aromas of plummy fruit, incense, rich soil, musk and spicy new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, with a layered, broad-shouldered profile defined by a fleshy core of fruit and fine, stony tannins. William Kelley 2017 Echézeaux Les Loachausses, Grand Cru 930 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) Domaine Anne Gros owns 0.76 ha of Les Loachausses, year old vines. In 2017, they have a good yield of 35hl/ha % new oak. The 2017 Echezeaux Grand Cru offers up aromas of sweet fruit compote, smoky plums, dark chocolate and licorice. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and expansive, with melting tannins, a succulent core of fruit and a fragrant finish. Structurally giving and open-knit, it will charm in its youth. William Kelley 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Barreaux 450 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The Vosne-Romanée from Anne Gros comes from a special vineyard, Les Barreaux, a north facing vineyard located next to the mythical Cros Parantoux. The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Barreaux displays notes of plummy fruit, dried flowers, baking chocolate and spices on the nose, followed by a medium-bodied, velvety palate that's charming and open-knit, lent definition by a bright line of acid. 34 2017 Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d Orveau 300 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) La Combe d Orveau is a cool climate terroir located right above Echezeaux and Vosne 1er Cru. 29hl/ ha in Burning bales of straw successfully warded off spring frosts; and the 2017 Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d'orveau that they saved is very pretty, offering up aromas of raspberries, plums, warm spices and rose petals. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, satiny and succulent, with lovely purity of fruit and a bright, mineral finish. William Kelley 2017 Bourgogne Pinot Noir 130 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The Bourgogne Rouge comes from 3 plots in: Nuits Saint Georges, Vosne-Romanée, and Flagey-Echézeaux. Average age of vines, 60 years old. Aromas of cherries, cassis and spices, framed by sweet recently used oak, introduce the 2017 Bourgogne Pinot Noir, a medium-bodied, succulent wine that's fleshy and open-knit. William Kelley 2017 Hautes Côtes de Nuits Pinot Noir 130 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) Domaine Anne Gros Hautes Côtes de Nuits Pinot Noir vineyard is located 300m above sea level, a 0.73 ha plot with young vines (20 years old). They had 26hl/ha of yield in The 2017 Hautes Côtes de Nuits bursts from the glass with a perfumed bouquet of berries and flowers, followed by a light to medium-bodied palate with a generous core of satiny fruit and melting tannins. This is adapted for near-term consumption. William Kelley 2017 Hautes Côtes de Nuits Blanc Cuvée Marine 130 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The Hautes Côtes de Nuits Blanc comes from 1 hectare of Chardonnay vines above Vosne-Romanée, planted in The 2017 Hautes Côtes de Nuits Blanc Cuvée Marine is very pretty, offering up a pretty bouquet of honeyed apple, pear and praline. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, saline and succulent, with mouth-watering acids but with none of the angularity this appellation can display. William Kelley 2017 Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 130 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The Bourgogne Blanc is a small production cuvée at Domaine Anne Gros, they own a 0.09 ha plot next to the road of Flagey-Echezeaux. A very low yield of 10ha/ hl in Lovely creamy pear fruits of lively lemons and apples. Good roundness. Drinking well already. There will be 0.35 ha of Chardonnay from new plantations from Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay Clos de l Eglise 100 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) From 20yr old vines in the locality of Pasquiers. Great ripeness with honeyed aromas of apple and pear. A great line of acidity keeps it from being heavy. +44 (0) Page 34

35 Domaine Humbert Frères Frédéric Humbert and his younger brother Emmanuel, known as Manou, run this 6 ha domaine. You may notice that the vineyard holdings appear similar to both of the Dugat domaines and this is not by chance the Humbert brothers are cousins of Claude and Bernard Dugat. Ten years ago the brothers swapped roles, with Frédéric going into the vineyard and Manou into the winery and the wines have gone from strength to strength. Manou is a larger than life ex rugby player, a great bear of a man how he creates wines of such finesse, precision, purity and elegance is beyond me! 2017 Bourgogne Rouge 125 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) An appealingly fresh nose offers up notes of red pinot fruit and soft earth nuances that are picked up by the vibrant and delicious middle weight flavors that betray only a trace of backend rusticity. This well-made effort should make for very pleasant early drinking. (86-88)/ Points, Burghound 2017 Fixin Vieilles Vignes 160 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) Tasted blind, this is frequently mistaken for Gevrey-Chambertin such is the quality here! (from 55+ year old vines). Firm reduction renders the nose impossible to properly assess. Otherwise there is good freshness and verve to the sleek and intense middle weight flavors that possess a pliant mid-palate that contrasts considerably with how fast the mildly rustic and youthfully austere finish tightens up. This isn t elegant but offers solid depth and persistent and once it unwinds it should also make for pleasant drinking. (87-89)/ Points, Burghound 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 250 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) (50% of the blend comes from Les Marchais and the rest from a wide range of other lieux-dits spread around the commune). This too is quite firmly reduced. There is both more volume and mid-palate density to the vibrant and focused medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the tautly muscular and robust finish that offers excellent depth and persistent. This firm effort will need at least some patience Points, Outstanding Top Value! - Burghound 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Poissenots 435 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) A small, south-facing vineyard with distinctively stony soils, it displays Humbert s trademark style of red fruit and power. Classic red and black fruits with a twist of spice. Finely-textured, long and poised. This is built on its minerality. (from a holding of 20 to 25 year old vines that total.91 ha). Soft reduction but with ample wood toast renders this tough to evaluate as well. The finer if not denser medium-bodied flavors possess both good intensity and minerality while delivering sneaky good length on the linear and youthfully austere finale. The supporting tannins are relatively fine and overall this is a classic Poissenot of understatement and salinity Points, Burghound +44 (0) Page 35

36 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles St Jacques 520 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) Really complex, black cherry notes real old vine character here. Super precise, mineral driven persistent finish. Textbook stuff. (from a.15 ha parcel of 60+ year old vines). Here there is no reductive funk to suppress the brooding nose of various dark berries, underbrush, forest floor and humus, all of which is set off by enough wood to mention. The racy, intense and delineated middle weight flavors are overtly mineral-driven yet the firm finish is clipped, short and dry. 37 Domaine des Lambrays It is unusual for a Burgundy Estate to have more Grand Cru than Premier Cru or Village wines available but the Grand Cru, Clos des Lambrays (Clos is a walled vineyard), is 8.86 hectars huge in Burgundy terms and whilst it is not a Monopole (a vineyard solely owned by one estate) it does own all but 0.18 acres of this fabled Grand Cru. Champy told me that in his view the 2017 vintage is a modern classic as the terroir is very apparent, yet the tannins are refined and the wines very balanced Allen Meadows 2017 Clos des Lambrays 1050 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) 1075 c/s In Bond (3 Magnums per case) Here too there are whiffs of herbal tea, floral and spice influences on the essence of red berries that is trimmed in soft wood and earth nuances. Once again, the mouthfeel of the medium-bodied flavors is beautifully sleek thanks to the dense but fine-grained tannins shaping the attractively refreshing, youthfully austere and strikingly long finale where the only concern is a hint of dryness. My sense is that the dryness is related to the abundant gas and thus my predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt Points, Burghound The 2017 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru was picked September 3 11 and includes 90% whole bunches in this vintage, matured in 50% new oak. Two tanks were chaptalized and the alcohol is around This has a classic Clos des Lambrays bouquet, quite understated at first, precise but tightly coiled. There is fine purity here. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit laced with tobacco and graphite and a fine line of acidity. Not the most persistent Clos des Lambrays that has ever been made, but perhaps one of the most elegant and poised Points, Neal Martin Beautifully, darkly aromatic with plenty of peppery spice. Woody rather than oaky. There s freshness from the tannins as well as from the acidity and the texture is so silky on the mid palate yet with power on the finish. Refined, flowing, dry and long. Handsome beauty and so easy to taste even with the underlying intensity and power. There s just a very slight hint of stems but not OTT. 38 Domaine Hervé Sigaut If you love true Chambolle-Musigny, as we do, these are not to be missed pure Pinot fruit not masked by oak (a maximum of 30% new oak, depending on the cuvée) this natural beauty does not require any make up! The village and appellation of Chambolle-Musigny is one that delights Burgundy lovers like no other. In tasting the wines of Anne and Hervé Sigaut, they are about as classic and archetypal Chambolles as you can find. They scream of Chambolle terroir, with fine, elegant and floral aromas and flavours, ethereal, energetic textures, and wonderful chalky/mineral tannins. Domaine Hervé Sigaut is a relatively small property (a bit less than 7 hectares), tucked away at the edge of the pretty village of Chambolle-Musigny. Most of the vineyards are planted with very old vines, over years old many of them ploughed by horse. Hervé follows the lunar calendar for most activities in the vineyard and cellar, and works with minimal intervention. Because they don t own any Grand Cru vineyards, they have largely remained 'under-the-radar' in a village that certainly doesn t lack for anointed stars, making these wines very affordable for the appellation Chambolle-Musigny 180 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) (from 4 separate parcels scattered around the commune). An exceptionally fresh nose combines notes of plum and violet with those of dark currant and spice. There is both good volume and density to the vibrant middle weight flavours that conclude in a bitter cherry pit-inflected finish that is sufficiently structured to reward 5 to 8 years of cellaring Points, Burghound 2017 Morey-St-Denis 1er Cru Les Millandes 240 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) Aromatically this closely resembles the Noirots with its liqueur-like aromas of plum, mocha and gentle wood influence. The mouthfeel of the medium-bodied flavours is similar as well with its exceptionally rich and caressing aspects where the finish also reflects lightly mineral and cherry pit nuances though without the warmth. At least some patience is suggested as this will certainly age but it s not so structured that it couldn t be enjoyed young Points, Burghound 2017 Morey-St-Denis 1er Cru Les Groseilles 240 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) Once again reduction and wood dominate the nose. Otherwise there is a sleeker and more refined mouthfeel to the delicious middle weight flavors that exude a fine bead of minerality on the lingering and nicely balanced finale. 39 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées 270 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) An attractively, even exuberantly spicy nose offers up notes of violet, lavender, plum and more discreet wood influence. The medium-bodied flavours are rich to the point of possessing a velvety texture as there is good dry extract which contributes to the solid mid-palate density, all wrapped in a sappy and bitter cherry pit-inflected finish where the natural minerality of a typical Fuées emerges, Lovely Points, Burghound 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Châtelots 270 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) A cool, pure, fresh and restrained mélange of black cherry, cassis and violet leads to relatively fine but punch middle weight flavors that possess good mid-palate sap that also buffers the moderately firm but fine finish where a dollop of wood appears. This delicious and well-made effort should drink well young and with a decade plus of age Points, Burghound 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers 300 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) (from vines planted in 1947). A deft application of wood can be found on the pretty and fresher nose of black cherry, raspberry, violet and a whiff of spice top note. Again there is excellent richness to the relatively full-bodied flavours that brim with unusually good amounts of dry extract in the context of the vintage, all wrapped around a lightly mineral and cherry pit-inflected finish. 40 Domaine Robert Sirugue The Sirugue family is historically related to not one but two eminent winemaking dynasties in Vosne-Romanée: Jayer and Grivot. This was my first visit to the domaine, located just round the corner from the former Engel abode, prompted after meeting Jean-Louis Sirugue at the Grands Jours tastings in early He was joined by his wife Marie-France and son Arnaud, whose wife Sophie Noëllat co-manages Domaine Michel Noëllat. There s another family connection for you! The domaine farms 11 hectares of vines, including their crown jewel of Grands-Echézeaux, and parcels in Les Petits Monts and Les Mombies in Chambolle-Musigny. They have almost a dozen plots scattered across Vosne-Romanée that are blended to create a Vosne-Romanée Village and a Vieilles Vignes. As is customary, I tasted through the components of each blend, and I find clear differences between the two stylistically, the latter displaying darker fruit and a touch more mineralité. Whole bunch fruit is used here, 100% in cases such as the Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Herbues and Grands-Echézeaux. While I would not place the domaine within the top flight of the appellation s growers, I find these 2017s pleasurable and respectful to their terroirs. They don t exude the sumptuousness of Cathiard or the precision of Grivot, but most will give drinking pleasure over the next decade and more. Neal Martin 2017 Bourgogne Passetoutgrain 69 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The 2017 Bourgogne Passetoutgrain, a blend of 30% Gamay and 70% Pinot Noir, has a fresh cranberry leaf bouquet in a slightly earthy style. The palate is well balanced with supple tannin, a touch of sherbet infusing the red berry fruit and a light, easy-going finish. 85 Points, Neal Martin 2017 Bourgogne Pinot Noir 100 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The 2017 Bourgogne Pinot Noir comes from four parcels below the RN74 in Vosne-Romanée, Flagey-Echézeaux and Gilly. It has a tightly wound, earthy bouquet with light floral notes. The palate is fleshy on the entry, a little smudged, but offers decent depth and a light, fleshy finish. 85 Points, Neal Martin 2017 Vosne-Romanée 255 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village is a blend of Aux Réas (the largest part), La Croix Blanche, Les Jacquines, Les Chalandins, Les Batteaux and Aux Communes, blended with 30% whole bunches. I tasted the component parts and then the final blend. It has pleasant red currant and cranberry fruit on the nose, plus just a touch of sous-bois. The palate is nicely structured with supple tannins, maybe just missing a little complexity but with a gentle grip on the spicy finish. Fine Points, Neal Martin +44 (0) Page 40

41 2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Petits-Monts 415 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Petit Monts 1er Cru contains around 40% whole bunches this year. It has a very attractive bouquet of red cherries, kirsch, crushed violets and a touch of crushed stone, all very well defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with a very supple texture, slightly gourmand in style, and fresh and vibrant with good depth on the complex finish. This is an excellent Les Petits Monts Points, Neal Martin 2017 Grands Echézeaux, Grand Cru 570 c/s In Bond (3 bts per case) The 2017 Grands-Echézeaux Grand Cru comes from the family s 0.12-hectare parcel and is matured entirely in new oak with 100% whole bunches (two barrels). It has a very intense bouquet of vibrant black cherry, raspberry, sous-bois and light mushroom scents, actually not dissimilar to a Domaine de la Romanée- Conti! The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and vibrant, classic in style, and accented by spicy black pepper and sage toward the structured, quite persistent finish. 42 Domaine Tortochot Tortochot is a domaine which totals 11 hectares, 10 of which are in Gevrey Chambertin including plots in three different lieu dit, two 1er Crus including the famous Lavaux St Jacques and three Grand Cru Vineyards. They also own 7 rows in the Grand Cru, Clos de Vougeot. The average age of the vines across the Domaine is over 50 years old. They began converting to organic viticulture in 2003 and since 2012 the entire estate has been certified organic by EcoCert. The domaine has been run by Chantal Tortochot since 2001 and under her guidance it is really starting to show its full potential. Previously Chantal s father, Gabriel, sold most of his fruit to the famous Beaune négociant, Joseph Drouhin, so the domaine has flown rather under the radar of the wine critics. This is all changing now Chantal is in charge and their reputation spreads. These wines are extremely good value and come highly recommended Morey-St-Denis 145 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) Bottled. Lightish cherry red. Seductively inviting combination of red fruits and a hint of smoky reduction giving a more savoury character. Lightly peppery and lifted. Gorgeously open and scented on the palate, a real beauty of pure fruit and village typicality. A little more stemmy on the nose than the village wine but in a good way, adding another layer. A little more complex than the village wine and a little longer. 44 Domaine Aurélien Verdet Aurélien was born in 1981 and has been slowly growing his estate, to now more than 5.5 hectares of vineyards which he farms organically. He isn t the most talkative of vignerons, preferring to spend time in the vineyard to produce top quality fruit. His wines are sought after and harder and harder to get, selling out easily as it s a small production. Good quality here for a fair price Marsannay Champs Perdrix 150 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) 2017 Fixin 150 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) Marsannay and Fixin just north of Gevrey are often overlooked by lovers of the wines from the Côtes de Nuits, probably because they don t have a vineyard name appended to their village name. These vineyards have been performing very well in recent years and the wines are elegant and full of character. Here is an outstanding Marsannay and Fixin Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes 185 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) This is a stunning Chambolle which undoubtedly reflects its terroir. Highly recommended Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots 355 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) This is a great example of a well-known vineyard just next to Vosne. The 2017 exhibits great fruit and results in a powerful but balanced wine Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes 355 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) Another vineyard next to Vosne high on the hill. It has a more mineral character than the opulent Boudots but probably more complexity and will undoubtedly last long Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 420 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case) This is the top wine of the domaine and should not be missed. It has length, complexity and a beautiful purity. +44 (0) Page 44

45 CHABLIS Domaine William Fèvre 10 nights of frost devastated the premier and grand cru vineyards, the resulting crop made for a production reduced by an alarming 70%. However, the increased concentration in the remaining berries and the tingling acidity profile as in all 2017 white burgundies have combined to make this a serious and age-worthy vintage for top Chablis. There is usually enough Fèvre Chablis to go around, but this year is different with such a low production. In some cases, we only have one six-pack of a particular Cru! Some markets like Switzerland have not been allocated any bottles at all for this vintage! Didier Séguier notes the balance in 2017 between the richness of the fruit and the underlying freshness, relatively uniformity in ripeness and an acidity similar to The wines have been concentrated by their lack of volume and show precision and purity. 47 CÔTE CHALONNAISE Domaine Bruno Lorenzon Michel Bettane - perhaps France's most respected wine critic, says that Bruno is the leader of the Mercurey appellation. Dedicated and meticulous, Lorenzon harvests his grapes in perfect maturation, adopting small yields (around 30hl / ha). Abstaining entirely from chaptalization and acidification, he obtains wines with fabulous aromatic expression. These are Mercureys of great purity and class, wines you don t want to miss. Lorenzon's wines are expensive, and he isn't afraid to express voluble pride in his achievements, but there's simply no arguing with quality in the bottle: his reds, much improved in recent years, have few rivals in Mercurey, and his whites none. Purity, delineation and concentration are the watchwords here, and the vines are trained higher than his neighbors' and farmed organically very rare in this appellation. I can only concur with the high esteem in which Lorenzon's wines are held by the French wine press and warmly encourage readers to try them. Racy and refreshing, this has aromas of white pepper and citrus that segue into a palate of cinnamon oak spice and tangy acidity. 93 Points, Tim Atkin MW, Decanter 2017 Mercurey 1er Cru Pièce c/s In Bond (12 bottles per case) Pièce XV is a vineyard selection of Bruno Lorenzon's best Chardonnay grapes, most of them densely planted in Champs Martin. It's a brilliant white made from very low yields - stony and fresh, it has mineral and tangerine notes with deftly integrated oak. 94 Points, Tim Atkin MW, Decanter 2017 Mercurey Le Châpitre 250 c/s In Bond (12 bottles per case) This is Bruno s entry level red village Mercurey, a wine that would embarrass most of the appellation s Premier Crus. It has a nose of ripe cherries, wild strawberries and mint. Rich, spicy, full-bodied and broad on the palate, it is concentrated but not heavy, with complexity, energy and drive. Very long indeed.
