Producrs ar happy onc again with th quality of what thy hav mad but not with th amount of win in thir cllars. Nvr bfor has Burgundy bn so popular around th world. With a succssion of short crops, spcially for rd wins, thr is starting to b ral prssur on availability and pricing. Fortunatly th slight strngthning of th pound against th uro has ngatd almost all of th pric incrass from th growrs, so pricing in strling is largly stabl. W ar dlightd to offr for th first tim svral nw producrs of th highst quality. Bénign Jolit maks an astonishing win at th 12th cntury anoir d la Prrièr. Anothr classical producr is Francois Labt s Châtau d la Tour, mad within th boundaris of th Clos d Vougot, whil w ar also thrilld to rprsnt th dynamic Domain Bachlt- onnot who ar producing som of th most xciting whit wins in th Côt d Baun. Th Wathr A modratly svr wintr, though without th dp frz of th prvious yar, ndd arly and a fin spring was ushrd in from th middl of arch. Th wind pattrns wr unusual, blowing mainly from th north (th bnchmark wind on Palm Sunday), cool and dry or vring right round to th south, warm and dry. Th first flowrs wr sn as arly as ay 10th, almost xactly th sam as in 2007, and proprly lookd aftr vinyards wr bursting with halth. Thr was a long trm far for th build up of drought problms howvr, spcially if th sason was to dvlop along 1976 lins. But, as in 2007, ay was a littl coolr than April and with a fw mor showrs, occasionally storms. Th villag sags wr talking of a hot and stormy summr apparntly th magpis wr nsting clos to th houss which thy do whn storms ar in th offing! Usful rain followd in arly Jun rapidly followd by a hospip ban which immdiatly brought mor rain and qustions as to whthr this could b th sam dtriorating pattrn as Th sun cam back with a vnganc at th nd of Jun, flirting with 40 C, and causing som grilling of th graps. Th first wk in July was dry too, bringing thoughts of 1976 back into viw. Whn it raind, solidly and vnly without stormy sid ffcts on Thursday 7th July, th growrs wr thrilld but furthr rain ovr th nxt fw days was lss wlcom and th whol month of July provd to b coolr and wttr than usual. Ovrall th sason was lss stormy than xpctd apart from minor hail in Corton-Charlmagn (20th ay), Gvry-Chambrtin (23rd July) and Puligny- ontracht, plus on rally dvastating storm in Rully on 12th July following a mor minor attack in Jun. August bgan clar and sunny but th July pattrn of showry days rturnd with tmpraturs blow or approaching th sasonal norm. Thr was littl sustaind rain xcpt on Friday 26th with many growrs starting to pick th following wk in th good wathr which rturnd. Carful vignrons who judgd thir picking dats intlligntly hav producd a halthy crop of dlicious wins with som flsh on th palat and good acidity, vry nicly balancd for mdium trm aging. Wins Th flowring was lss succssful for th rd vins and th aftr-ffcts of th big frz of Dcmbr 2009 continu to affct yilds in th Côt d Nuits. In gnral th crop was th sam, or vry slightly mor than in 2010, which was wll blow avrag itslf. Th graps wr rip to th tast but wr lowr in sugar lvls than in rcnt yars, gnrating a wlcom frshnss. Though th growing sason may hav bn similar to 2007, th wins ar quit diffrnt bcaus th graps had much thickr skins, offring gratr dnsity of fruit and mor structur. No vintag comparison is xactly right, but thr ar som parallls with th fin and frsh 2002 rds. By 2011, th domain rachd its currnt 23 hctars whn thir fathr handd ovr his vinyard holdings. In a fw instancs wins ar mad from purchasd graps whr thy hav don th vinyard work thmslvs. Sinc starting out, arc and Alxandr hav cut down th proportion of nw oak from 35% to 25% on avrag, varying from 10% for gnric Bourgogn Blanc up to on third for th Grand Cru wins, and hav stoppd using ls-stirring as a tchniqu. Th whit wins (two thirds of production) spnd on yar in barrl and thn 6 to 8 months in tank on thir ls. Bourgogn Blanc ad from graps grown in vinyards just blow Puligny-ontracht, this barrl-frmntd win is quit rich, yt it is frshnd up by th livly, almost salin charactr of th vintag. This is a vry attractiv win to drink young. Bourgogn Blanc Brilliant and xprssiv on th nos, this win is fin and floral, with lovly nrgy and a nic touch of flsh bfor th frsh minral finish. Dominiqu kps opning bottls of this win as h liks it so much; w hop our allocation will not suffr as a rsult! It is an absolutly outstanding win. This win is rally stylish on th nos, with a spic or two in among th flowrs and th palat is silky and stylish, fin-bond and prsistnt. It is thral, not powrful and simply a plasur to drink. It is anothr vry stylish Volnay, but shows vlvty fruit and gratr dpth than th villag win. It is noticably mor backward and with a firmr structur and imprssiv acidity too.
