1 SOUTHERN STATES A. Tennessee (16th state-1796) Volunteer State 1. Its name is derived from a Cherokee word for a village, then river, then region, then state. It also humbly dubbed itself the Nation s Most Interesting State. Tennessee has been more commonly known as the Volunteer State since 1847 when the governor called for 2,800 volunteers for the Mexican war and 30,000 men responded. 2. Capital - Nashville Country music capital of the world. 3. The hardwood flooring center of the U.S. 4. Industries include: furniture, chemicals, textiles and leather. 5. It was the home of the confederate capital city of Richmond, as well as the home state of Robert E. Lee who led the Confederate troops. Richmond is the current capital also. 6. Because other soldiers complained that the men from North Carolina didn t hold their positions-- that is, they didn t put tar on their heels. 3. Capital: Raleigh 4. The nations largest producer of furniture. 5. A leading producer of tobacco and bricks. 6. Its cities and counties hopefully do not ring a bell. But they are also brands of cigarettes. It was the site of the first shots fired in the Civil War.(Fort Sumter) 5. Manufacturing: textiles, asbestos, wood pulp, steel products. 6. Agriculture: 3rd in peaches (1st California), 2nd in tobacco, other products are peanuts, sweet potatoes, cotton, and corn. F. Oklahoma (46th state-1907) the Sooner State 1. The name comes from two Choctaw Indian words meaning red people. Its nickname comes from those settlers who entered the territory sooner than the noon starting gun when the region was opened for homesteading on April 22, Capital - Oklahoma City 3. Oil has made Oklahoma a very rich state. 4. Meat packing and food processing are also very important industries. 5. Agriculture: wheat, corn, cotton, peanuts. (Beef Cattle #1) G. Texas (28th state ) The Lone Star State 1. Texas comes from the Caddo Indian word teyas, or tejas, meaning friend or allies. The Texans were American southerners who had been invited into the territory by Mexico, which controlled it. But they rebelled because Mexico had emancipated slaves. Setting itself as the Lone Star Republic, Texas fought for independence from Mexico in 1836, precipitating the Mexican War, after which the territory joined the Union. 2. Capital - Austin 3.
