Friday Feedback for July 28, 2017 I Know Why My Back Hurts! We just finished packing up the June area questionnaires to ship for scanning. There were a total of 14 boxes. The weight for Indiana was 174 pounds, Michigan was 135 pounds and Ohio was 162 pounds for a total of 471 pounds for the region. I sure am glad I m NOT in Saint Louis where questionnaires for the entire country will be scanned! International Day of Friendship According to the United Nations, the official sponsor of this special day, the International Day of Friendship, is a day set aside to promote friendship among peoples, cultures and countries. It is a time to encourage efforts towards peace, and to build bridges among different people. It is a day of respect for others, and a day to celebrate diversity. The origin of International Day of Friendship has roots as far back as 1919 in the United States. In 2011, the United Nations declared this an official international day, to be celebrated annually on July 30th. National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day National Chocolate Chip Day is August 4 th. It's real easy to celebrate this sweet day. Eat lots and lots of Chocolate chip cookies. The chocolate chip cookie was invented by Ruth Graves Wakefield from Massachusetts, in Her husband ran the Toll House Inn, resulting in her cookies being call "Toll House" cookies. Nestle's bought the rights to the name, and the rest is history! Did You Know? Americans eat on average 18,928 cookies (all kinds) in their lifetimes.

Friday Feedback for July 21, 2017 Destroy Leftover UPS 1+ Labels Kalaus If you have any leftover UPS Early A.M. 1+ labels (see below), please destroy them immediately. These labels are very expensive to use and they are not mission critical. Please let us know if you have any questions. NAHMS Peters Today (Friday) is the last day to collect a consent form and send back your NAHMS follow-up surveys, so go ahead and drop those in the UPS as soon as you can. You ll notice they have all been marked as checked in on your ipads, pay no attention to this, as the check-in system is not working as intended for the NAHMS survey. We can still see which one s are not checked in, but I am unable to reliably push that back out to the ipads. Small technical glitch we ll just have to work around. Thanks for all your hard work collecting those signatures, despite every kind of sideways maneuver imaginable during the survey, including added work during June, ACES, numerous quarterly surveys, and still balancing your normal workloads. Genuinely, I truly appreciate all your hard work. Supervisors Working Objective Yield Thanks to everyone for getting out and promptly completing their Objective Yield work. Supervisors who are also enumerating, please enter your employee ID under supervisor and enumerator. National Hot Dog Day Hot dog, hot dog, hot diggety dog! July 23rd is National Hot Dog Day, on this date, we celebrate one of America's favorite summer sandwiches. It is only fitting that this dog gets its day. Its summertime. Hot dogs are center stage on the grill, and at picnics all across America. They are at the ballpark. They are sold from carts on street corners in every city. It's not hard to find them. We consume hundreds of millions of hot dogs on the Fourth of July alone.

Enjoy National Hot Dog Day to the fullest. Have a couple of hot dogs for lunch or dinner. And, don't forget to cook a few on a stick at the evening campfire. We consume so many hot dogs, in so many venues, that the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council hesitates to forecast consumption. But, it does report that each year we buy over 837 million packages of hot dogs at retail outlets, and over 24 million hot dogs at baseball stadiums alone.

Friday Feedback for July 14, 2017 Out of Business Forms from List Frame Jones List frame, as well as FMG, will research an out of business request on the FSA database before dropping a record. If the operator has positive data on FSA, list frame cannot request to drop the record. If list frame does request to drop the record, FMG will reject the request. As you go through the Out of Business form during an interview, please read each question entirely to the operator. What is most often found on FSA after an operator has reported they are out of business is hay or CRP acres. Website Suggestions Lawson Did you notice a couple of new items on the Great Lakes Region NASDA Website? Based upon a suggestion from Chad, I added a bright blue box near the top which provides a quick view of items due this week followed by a green box showing items due next week. Simply touch (or click) on any gold text and a link will take you to another page containing all of the information for that survey. These quick week views will be updated on a regular basis. If anyone else has an idea for other changes you would like made to the website, please send me an and I ll do my best to incorporate them. (Linda.Lawson@NASS.USDA.gov) Thanks again Chad for the wonderful suggestion! National Ice Cream Day When you get the urge for a snack on a hot, humid summer night, what's the first thing that comes to your mind? That's right...ice Cream! Therefore, it's only fitting that ice cream be given its own special day. On this day, we hope you enjoy an ice cream cone, a sundae, or a milk shake. Set the diet aside and splurge a little...have one of each! In 1984, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed July as National Ice Cream Month. He also established National Ice Cream Day as the third Sunday in the month. Did you know? Charles E. Minches of St. Louis, Missouri is credited with inventing the ice cream cone. On July 23, 1904 at the World's Fair in St. Louis, he filled a pastry cone with two scoops of ice cream to make the first ice cream cone. There is some controversy over this claim. Italo Marchiony of New York City filed a patent for the ice cream cone months before the fair opened. And, he was selling lemon ice in cones as early as 1896.

Friday Feedback for July 7, 2017 We did it! Will the surveys ever end? June Area, Hogs, and Crops Surveys followed by NAHMS, ARMS, Cattle, Wheat Objective Yield (Ohio) and ACES is the definition of Mid May to early July in the Great Lakes Region. In fact, we were so busy during this 2 month span, it s like the months are a blur. A big thank you to everyone who helped get these surveys completed you are all awesome! Welcome Back Linda Lawson Kalaus Linda was selected for a long term tour of duty position in NASS s Research and Development Division, Geospatial Science and Survey Section in October She provided valuable input and testing of the Geographic Information Running Area Frames Forms Electronically (GIRAFFE) system. Her tour in research was originally 18 months, but she was so valuable to her team that they extended her detail until July We are excited to have Linda back in the office where she will assume some of Mike Laird s duties as ipad administrator, Purdue website architect, and MOST Point of Contact. She will also be working on reimbursable surveys. Welcome back Linda! National Blueberry Day National Blueberry Day is July 8 th. Just about every other fruit has its day of recognition. Yet, somehow Blueberries have not had a day designated in its honor... up until now. We think it is bizarre, that Blueberries have just now received its fair and just recognition with a special day. In addition to tasting great, Blueberries are loaded with fiber and rich in antioxidants. Blueberries are one of the healthiest fruits you can eat. The most notable health benefits of blueberries include: helps lower cholesterol to promote heart health, reduces the risk of cancer, and can even help to slow the aging process. Did You Know? Most blueberry bushes require at least two bushes of different varieties, to pollinate and produce berries.
