Volume 8, Issue 5 8th Annual Stir the Pot: Louisiana Seafood Cook-off a Success! The 8th Annual Stir the Pot: Louisiana Seafood Cook-off and Festival, held on Saturday, April 7, at Palmetto Island State Park, featured 18 dishes submitted by 16 teams. Musical entertainment was provided throughout the day, while festival goers enjoyed the food and bid on plenty of items during the live and silent auctions. Vendors and demonstrators provided shopping, demonstrated their crafts, and discussed the wildlife and native plants found at Palmetto Island State Park. Despite the damp and cool weather, the rain held off and there were approximately 600 people in attendance and the event raised nearly $10,000 for the park. Friends of Palmetto Island would like to thank everyone who braved the weather, the cook-off teams for providing fantastic food for the patrons, the vendors and demonstrators who added shopping, nature and cultural components to the event, the very generous donors of auction items and all those people who bid on the items, and the volunteers who worked for days, weeks and months to coordinate this event. Stir the Pot is held annually the Saturday after Easter Sunday s event will be April 27th. 4 Page 4 Palmetto Pal s Paper Volume 8 Issue 5 L VERMILION VOYAGE afayette Travel and the Bayou Vermilion District partnered to create a three day overnight paddle trip down the Bayou Vermilion from Vermilionville to South Side City Park, Richard s Sale Barn and Palmetto Island State Park. Participants were able to paddle a little over 50 miles of the Vermilion River through Lafayette and Vermilion Parish and was able to get up close and personal with Cajun and Creole Country. Last stop was Palmetto Island State Park where they could enjoy the amenities of the cabins or camp at the primitive camp sight. Get the full story and 2019 registration info here. Be careful BEWARE!... where you put your hands and your flip flopped feet, these caterpillars deliver a nasty sting. If you are stung, you should first wash the area with soap and water and allow it to air dry. The spines of the caterpillar may be imbedded into your skin. Try using some duct tape or scotch tape to remove the spines. The spines will continue to inject toxins into you if you don t get them out. Try to soothe the stinging and itching, apply rubbing alcohol, ammonia or an ice pack. CAMP HOSTS NEEDED If you are interested in becoming a campground host at Palmetto Island State Park, or any other state park, you can go to and fill out an application and either bring it to the park, or mail it into the address on the form. Thomas Jones, Rachal Lamkin and Michael Guidry are all new employees. Niki Bradley and Christina Lemaire are returning employees. The long-time District Manager Bill Roberts has retired after 30+ years with State Parks. Happy Retirement! The new District Manager is Rick Seale. Welcome! 3 INTERIOR PONDS 2 acre pond - by the canoe launch 5 acre pond - is located on the left as you drive to the campground 7 acre pond the big pond at the end of the campground. All of ponds are tidal, empty into the Vermilion River and are connected by the canoe trail. Pack your ice chest, bait, pole and chair. 6 Page 6 Palmetto Pal s Paper Volume 8 Issue 5 A special thank you goes out to Mr. Harold Fredrick, who graciously took the time to make and donate a set of steps for the Friends merchandise trailer. They will be put to good use. V ermilion River Boat Launch- Palmetto Island State Park is located along the Vermilion River and has a very nice area to launch a boat and has ample parking space. There are also clean bathrooms and picnic tables at the launch sight. There is no additional costs to launch your boat, but the $3 per person gate fee does apply. No boat...no problem. This area also has a look out pier so that you can view the Vermilion River and it s great for fishing from the bank near the picnic tables.

7 Volume 8 Issue 5 Palmetto Pal s Paper Page 7 CHERRY PIE BUBBLE BAKE 2 cans of Biscuits 1 can Cherry Pie Filling 2 tsp. Cinnamon Glaze Ingredients 1 cup Powdered Sugar 2 T. Milk 1/2 tsp. Vanilla Cut biscuits into fourths and place into a large bowl. Add the can of cherry pie filling and cinnamon to the biscuits. Mix everything together. Pour entire mixture into a baking dish and bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. After cooking, set it aside to cool slightly. Mix the powdered sugar, milk and vanilla together to make the glaze. Pour the glaze over the entire dish. Using a 12 inch Dutch Oven, 25 charcoal briquettes are needed. 17 on the top and 8 on the bottom. Louise Meaux Duhon Latanier Cookers Not just for Dutch Ovens! This dish can be cooked in your kitchen oven at home. There will not be a Dutch Oven Gathering in the month of May. Latanier Cookers are traveling to the Louisiana Dutch Oven Society s State Gathering that is being held at Bogue Chitto State Park. The next D.O.G. at Palmetto Island State Park will be June 9th, Make your campsite reservations or join us for the day!

8 Page 8 Palmetto Pal s Paper Volume 8 Issue 5 Please Mail To: P.O. Box 33, Perry, LA Board Meetings are held the last Tuesday of the month at the Vermilion Parish Library in Abbeville. Meetings begin at 6:00 p.m. The next one is May 29th. The public is welcome to attend! Park Hours of Operation: Gates are open 6am-9pm (Sun-Thurs) and 6am-10pm (Fri & Sat). Entrance station is open: 8am-5pm (Sun-Thur) 8am-10pm (Fri & Sat). All park sites close at 10pm on Friday, Saturday and days preceding holidays. Entrance Fees: $3 per person; Free for Seniors (62 and older) and children age 3 and under. Canoe rentals are $25 per day or $7 per hour. The Splashpad is open April-September, Tuesday Sunday from 8am to 8pm. Golf cart entry fees are $10 per day or $100 for annual pass (proof of insurance is required). Palmetto Island State Park has 96 camp sites, 6 cabins, 4 pavilions, 4 primitive backpack sites, 1 primitive group site and a meeting room to rent.
