Welcome to the Summer Edition of CAMRA Angle. This time of year its great to get out and about, enjoying what we hope will be great weather and sipping a few beers in a pub garden. There are some great events to look forward to this summer and are depicted on the front cover. There is annual Sunderland Air show, the Tall Ships Race and the (eventual) opening of the Roker Pier Tunnel and Lighthouse Tours ; - the photograph of the lighthouse was taken through perfectly lined up aperture in a sculpture on Roker Beach. CAMRA Angle 52 - Summer have reopened and a new micropub, The Cask Lounge has opened recently. If you like real cider its good to report an increase in availability in 3 pubs. This may be a summer thing but still welcome. This issue recognises the achievements of local pubs, and further afield we have been out and about in London and North Yorkshire, reporting on some interesting historic hostelries. An excellent new Good Beer Guide to Belgium is reviewed along with two of the country s beer styles. Now its interesting that as CAMRA are reporting the closure of 18 pubs a week, we appear to be bucking the trend with real ale pubs. We have lost the Cross Arms in South Shields forever due to demolition, however two closed pubs The 2 nd Society for Preservation of Beer from the Wood National Festival is coming soon to North Shields. So enjoy the read and the summer! Ken Paul. (See page 6) The Grey Hen near Temple Park has reopened and is still selling real ale with Doom Bar & Hobgoblin Gold reported..

CAMRA Angle 52 - Summer THE END OF THE CROSS ARMS, SOUTH SHIELDS. Formerly known as The Dougie Vaults, The Cross Arms Hotel closed in 2015 to make way for the new South Shields Town Centre redevelopment. Demolition began earlier this year. Thanks to Terry Ford for the demolition photographs. (Picture right taken just after closure). PUB NEWS (CONTINUED) Sunderland. After an internal and external refit, Borough has reopened with 2 handpulls with Doom Bar & Timothy Taylor s Landlord. The Ivy House now sells three cask ales and three real ciders. The Ship Isis has had two tap takeovers recently. April saw the visit of Two by Two Brewery of Wallsend. Beers included New England Blackberry Porter, American Pale and Vanilla Milk Coffee Porter. The 1 st weekend in June saw a RAT infestation with more rodent themed beers from the Rat & Ratchet Brewery pub in Huddersfield. Ratmageddon, Ratella, Rat Fink, Bohemian Ratsody and Schrödinger s Rat Pale Stout were all available. Due to low sales of real ale, The Typsy Cow has restricted its availability to Sunderland match days only. Washington. The Ox and Plough in Oxclose no longer sells real ale.

CAMRA Angle 52 - Summer THE CASK LOUNGE - SOUTH SHIELDS At the same time as the demolition of The Cross Arms Hotel was taking place, about quarter of a mile away the fitting out of a new pub was taking shape. The Cask Lounge opened up in mid May and is the first micropub in South Shields, indeed in the Sunderland & South Tyneside CAMRA branch. Located in former council rent offices opposite South Shields Town Hall, the premises is shared with Goldie's café and vinyl album shop; the pub is on the right. It has a homely muted décor with a fireplace and a leather Chesterfield sofa, which looks very difficult to get out of, and four swivel barstools. The large windows give the place a light and airy feel.. There are four cask ale handpulls on the bar, dispensing three beers from the Marston range, and one guest handpull. The pub offers card carrying CAMRA members 15% discount off the real ale. Owners Jill & Paul wanted a pub that would encourage conversation without the intrusion of TV screens gambling machines or children, although non intrusive background music is played. The facilities at the back of the bar are shared with next door, there being an inside entrance to the shop. In fact, it is possible if you so wish, to go next door and take your drink in with you. By a strange coincidence, this is the 2 nd pub mentioned in this issue with a similar arrangement; read the article about Harrogate on pages 10 & 11. The Cask Lounge makes a handy stopping off point if doing a Shields pub crawl, being close to The Maltings and the pubs nearer the town centre bus stops and Metro. More information, including opening hours, can be found on Whatpub.com and the online CAMRA South Shields Real Ale pubs leaflet. wordpress/?page_id= 130 Ken Paul

The Wild Boar in Houghton le Spring are this year planning several coach trips, the first of which was just before Easter to Harrogate. Now surprisingly this is a place I have never drunk in before so it was time to redress this. After the usual traditional breakfast my wife and I joined about 30 others for the journey down to North Yorkshire. I had already researched a list of pubs in the Good Beer Guide (GBG) that looked interesting and worth a visit. The idea was to combine touristy and retail therapy stuff with a few beers. CAMRA Angle 52 - Summer FOUR PUBS IN HARROGATE rattled off a list of pubs including the first one we would visit, about 50 yards away, Hales Bar - below left. Not being in the GBG it wasn t on my list but was persuaded by the fact it was the oldest pub in town. Allegedly some scenes for the film Chariots of Fire were shot in here in An unusual feature of the bar was two burning gas lamps (see photo above) so left with the aim of reaching the Little Ale House. Harrogate is hillier than I thought it would be and there is randomness to the street layout, making the map we were given useful. Even so, we arrived at the place where this micropub should have been and couldn t find it, until the wife pointed behind me and said, Is that it there? Sure enough it shared its entrance with an Indian Restaurant, the latter being upstairs. Arriving before noon and, after a very brief visit to the town s Wetherspoons, - the huge Winter Gardens; we found the tourist information office for a free map and any other tips that would be of use. This very helpful lady Supping a pint of the house beer, Daleside Hales Bar, we were soon joined by three couples from Cornwall who were visiting the town then heading up to South Shields! One guy was reminiscing about and hopefully visiting The County, The Marine, The Harbour Lights and the Beacon (sorry mate that one s closed). We could have easily chatted away for much longer but needed to see some more of the town, Inside was a small but comfortable bar with seats and tables obviously bought from second hand shops and a bar with 5 handpulls. The cellar was actually to the side of the bar behind sliding panels. The Elland 1872 Porter, one of my favourite UK beers, was spot on. The pub was the local CAMRA branch pub of the year for Continued opposite

CAMRA Angle 52 - Summer plenty to choose from, including my second dark beer of the day, Northern Whisper Beltie, a brewery in Rossendale I had not heard of before. The majority were local beers and not a national ale in sight. Little Ale House Cellar Next up, after some retail therapy, was the Harrogate Tap, at the railway station. This pub is part of the Pivovar group who also own the Newcastle Tap, York Tap and Sheffield Tap amongst others. This long bar is next to platform one and from the small snug near the entrance trains can be seen through a small window. With two banks of 6 handpulls there was By now the Wild Boar breakfast had worn off so we sought out a quick snack (and more retail therapy ) before the next, last and best pub of the day. Major Toms Social ( right ). In shared premises with other businesses, this quirky café bar is housed upstairs alongside a vinyl album shop. Along with real ale, they have bottled beers and pizzas (shame we had already eaten!). The stout I had was from another new brewery for me, Turning Point in Kirkbymoorside. There was a very friendly, relaxed family atmosphere with board games available to keep kids and adults busy alike. We sat on a wobbly bench and just enjoyed the atmosphere and the background music. Although the place was run by young enthusiastic staff the music playing was for all tastes and just before we were ready to leave, one of my all-time favourite s records came on, from The Free Electric Band by Albert Hammond. What a way to end a Harrogate pub tour. I believe we picked the best pubs for beer quality and something different. Looking back now, the bar areas of all of them could easily fit into the aforementioned Winter Gardens Wetherspoons. There are dozens of pubs in the town and it s impossible to do them all. Worth another visit then! Ken Paul

CAMRA Angle 52 - Summer NEWS FROM THE WOOD- SPBW NORTH EAST. March s meeting for the Society for the Preservation of Beers from the Wood (SPBW) had been planned for the first Saturday of the month at The Sun Inn, Swalwell but the Beast from the East intervened so we decided to put it back until the weather improved. The rearranged meeting on Saturday 24 March saw Big Lamp Prince Bishop on sale from a wooden cask. After the meeting; we made the short journey up the bank to Whickham to one of the areas many micropubs; the One Eyed Stag; which is another shop conversion. Four cask ales were on offer including a beer from Three Kings from the wood. The pub also has a small bottle shop. After a pleasant couple of hours in Whickham, we headed back to Newcastle where we visited the city s newest micropub, the Mean-Eyed Cat. The Cat opened in March and is in an old shop in St Thomas Street opposite Haymarket bus station. The decor is Mexican in theme and there are six handpumps, a similar number of keg fonts and real ciders. April took us to the Comrades Club in Haltwhistle close to our boundary with Cumbria. Two beers from the wood from Hadrian Border were on sale, Farne Island Pale and Secret Kingdom. The club is friendly, welcoming and open to the public. After the meeting, it was back on the train to Newcastle and another visit to the Mean- Eyed Cat. This is rapidly becoming my favourite Newcastle pub. Our most recent May meeting took place at Tynemouth Club. Again two beers from the wood from Hadrian Border: Farne Island Pale and Secret Kingdom. A further beer from the wood; Hadrian Border Northumbrian Gold was available at Hugo s By The Coast, part of the Fitzgeralds chain. After leaving Tynemouth; we left to visit The Dog & Rabbit micropub in Whitley Bay. On leaving the Metro station; you pass the former Fitzgeralds pub on South Parade. This now called The Brewery and is the new home of the Whitley Bay Brewing Company. Three of their beers are on sale at 2.80 a pint. More news. June s meeting is at the northern extreme of our territory; The Brown Bear in Berwick upon Tweed The second National Festival of Beer from The Wood will take place from 5 th - 7 th July at The Exchange on Saville Street in North Shields. 18 CAMRA Angle 52 - Summer BOOK REVIEW CAMRA S Good Beer Guide Belgium 8 th Edition - Joe Stang & Tim Webb ( CAMRA members). The idea behind this book, first published in 1992, was born in late 1988 in a bar in Bruges called the Brugs Beertje, a back street cafe bar. What has resulted from that is this essential beer guide. The authors start this well presented full colour book with a brief history of the country then look at how to get there and get around. Then there is a guest contribution from a local author, Regula Ysewijn, who points out that there has been a demise in the number of café bars in Belgium in part due to ageing owners and a decline in heavy industry and its thirsty workers. This is a striking parallel to pub closures in the UK, but for different reasons Then there are chapters on the beer making process and a look at the particular styles available in the country. The bulk of the book is then taken up by Belgian Breweries (245) and Bars and Cafes (nearly 800). It s interesting that the authors have taken the trouble to rate each brewery that is over 2 years old with a 1-5 score, 5 being Among the world s best breweries. Similarly each beer listed is given a star rating, with 5 being Among the best in the world. I spotted at least one brewery, Orval and one of its beers also called Orval, were awarded top marks. Some may be familiar with the beer, it having a symbol of a trout with a wedding ring in its mouth. (Read the book to find out more). There are also useful town plans of the larger cities which show the locations of recommended bars, bottle shops and breweries. In 2015 we had a short family break in Brugge. Unfortunately I was not in possession of this book at the time and looking back, it would have been very useful. For instance we found the aforesaid Brugs Beertje, is closed every Wednesday, so one guess on which day we looked for it?. Still, another bar listed in the book is Cambrinus ( above) which became our local, serving over 400 beers and as the guide correctly describes The meandering beer menu is bible thick with helpful tasting notes. A minor issue that I have with the book is that there are two indices which I found confusing ; a beer brands index and a general index. I personally feel it would have been easier navigating the book if they were combined. Aside from that this is an excellent piece of work, very well researched. It s obviously a labour of love and often enhanced with wry humorous comments, which make this a very readable guide. No one visiting Belgium should be without it. Ken Paul

As the book reviewed opposite will tell you, there are several styles of beer available in Belgium and so here are two that are worth a closer look. Lambics because of the way they are brewed and Trappists because a Trappist brewery has just started up in England. More on that last one later. CAMRA Angle 52 - Summer LAMBICS AND TRAPPISTS This is where Lambic Beers differ from other beers as no yeast is a mild fruity aroma and a tart fruity taste. TRAPPIST BREWERIES Trappist Monasteries became a religious order in 1892 and up until 1962 anyone could claim to brew Trappist beer. A law was passed that decreed that it could only be brewed in a Trappist Monastery. LAMBIC BEERS The term Lambic has many interpretations, one being it is taken from the town of Lembeek, south of Brussels. This is where the Boon Brewery is based, brewers of several Lambic beers. So what is special about Lambics? Well, on a brewery tour in the UK they go through the process of how beer is brewed. You are told the grain is cracked in a mill to make grist which is then steeped in hot water in the brewery. This has created the wort which is then boiled with added hops. There then follows the fermentation process with the addition, or pitching, of the yeast. pitched in at all! After the boil, the wort is run into a shallow open fermenter and the windows of the brewery are left open, allowing wild airborne yeast to enter and ferment the beer. On maturation, the beer is stored in oak casks for months or even years. Some beers have cherries or raspberries added, which give the beer a sour taste. The example in the photograph - Mort Subite Kriek- has cherry juice and cherries added to the maturation casks. It has Until recently there were only 11 Trappist breweries in the world, with 6 being in Belgium. The twelfth is about to start brewing in the Mount St Bernard Abbey at Whitwick, Leicestershire. The brewery can brew 2000 litres ( app 3500 pints) at a time The new beer will be bottled in 330 ml bottles and sold in the monasteries own shop as well as being distributed nationally. The beer will be 7.4% ABV, is yet unnamed but should be available at the start of June.. Ken Paul SOME LAMBIC EXAMPLES Boon-Geuze. Cantilion-Rose de Gambrinus/Foufoune. Girande-Geuze Black Label. Lindemans- Kriek. SOME TRAPPIST EXAMPLES Chimay - Rouge/Blanche/Bleue. Orval - Orval. Rochefort - 6/8/10. Westmalle - Dubbel / Tripel.

CAMRA Angle 52 - Summer HAMMERED IN HAMMERSMITH Four days of staying at my cousin's allowed me to do a good few pub crawls in Hammersmith, a fairly trendy area of West London. Close to the river Thames and down a back alley is one of the most famous bars in London, The Dove. It was built in about 1740 and has been visited by dozens of celebrities including: Alec Guinness, Graham Greene, Ernest Hemingway and, allegedly, Rule Britannia was penned here! A CAMRA Regionally Important Heritage Interior, the tiny front bar to see the Oxford Cambridge Boat Race. It has always been a Fullers pub. I had a pint of ESB and London Pride which was lovely, well it is only a few hundred yards from the brewery! One of the best attractions of the area is the large amount of good pubs in a small area. My first port of call on the main street was The Salutation at 154 King Street, a former 1727 coaching Inn rebuilt in Its beautiful recently redeveloped for a younger audience than myself. The 6 beers were the usual Young's fayre including Young's Bitter, Special and the rarely seen Winter Warmer (5%) I opted for the this as I hadn't tasted it in years it was deep ruby red in colour, very malty with a light bitter finish, very pleasant. was at 33 square feet in the Guinness Book of Records as the smallest bar in the World! In the summer this place is packed and with its wonderful views of the Thames is the best place faience tiling is one of the best in London. Lovely double doors lead into an area of stained glass windows, wooden floor boards, large open area and an attractive bar. Beer is the usual Fullers range of London Pride, ESB and Gales. Next at 81 King Street was The Hammersmith Ram, a Young's pub only Continued opposite.

CAMRA Angle 52 - Summer Next off was The Hop Poles at King Street. Lit up like a Xmas tree this Grade II listed pub dates back to 1857 and has a lovely granite exterior. Inside has been fully opened up and is enormous. The beers I remember were London Pride and Sharp's Doom Bar. Most of the trade I was informed happens during the day, and looks geared towards younger diners having a drink. I skipped the Wetherspoons' opposite and went to the corner of King Street to The Swan a Grade II Nicholson's pub built in 1901 in the Jacobean style. Inside there are huge arches and tons of wood panelling with a very large ornate wooden staircase. There were at least 8 real ales on and I opted for the London Pride. Being right near the tube it gets a lot of tourists but it is a grand pub. Loveliest pub of the night was The Dove but The Salutation was so good I later spent a 9 hour session drinking in there - Hammered in Hammersmith! Terry Ford After the Revitilisation meeting in Newcastle, I was asked if I was interested in going to the Town Mouse. After thinking for about a microsecond I said yes. This basement micropub was busy but cosy and it had 4 handpulls on, one of which was North Riding Coffee Bean Mild. This was a nice quaffable 4.3% dark beer. Fast forward a few days and a post on Whatpub appeared entitled ; Delivering the Magic of Mild across Stockport and Manchester. The local CAMRA branches have launched the Mild Magic pub trail ( uk/campaign.htm) in annual celebration of an endangered FIND US beer AT style :- which 113 branches Cleveland promote Road throughout High Barnes May. 23 CAMRA Angle 52 - Summer TWO LONDON HERITAGE PUBS - Visited by Terry Ford. 1 - THE STAR TAVERN BELGRAVIA. On the 8th August 1963 a train was robbed of 2.6 million - that robbery was planned in this pub! Those of us old enough to remember the Great Train Robbery will also recall some of the pub's more famous frequenters: Diana Dors, Peter O'Toole, John Profumo, Princess Margaret, Liz Taylor and Bing Crosby? etc. It is probably better known to most CAMRA members as one of the famous five pubs ** to be in every edition of the Good Beer Guide and it was also CAMRA West very popular pub with tourists and locals alike. It is also a CAMRA Historic Pub Interior of some Regional Importance. The hanging baskets outside are a renowned feature. A Fuller's pub, three beers were on, Red Fox a 4.3% autumnal red ale, ESB and London Pride - drawing rooms with tons of dark wood panelling and a real fire. The upstairs has a library room and eating area (below). Overall an interesting place to visit with reasonable beer but too food orientated for a real bar fly like me. London Pub Of The Year last year... a real star - The Star Tavern!! Built in 1848 this Grade II listed building is situated in posh Belgravia. It had a makeover in 2008 and is a my London session beer of choice. At the right behind the bar is a lovely oak panelled dumb waiter ( above) which is still in use. A popular place for eating, the rooms to the left of the bar look like Victorian **The rest of the Famous Five are :- The Buckingham Arms, London, The Roscoe Head, Liverpool, The Square & Compass, Dorset The Queens Head, Cambridge Continued on page 24

CAMRA Angle 52 - Summer TWO LONDON HERITAGE PUBS - continued 2 - THE VICTORIA PADDINGTON. The Victoria in Paddington is a Grade II listed pub built in 1837, the same year as Queen Vicky first sat on the throne. A CAMRA historic pub interior of national importance, seemingly a favourite with Dickens, Churchill and The Dracula Society! So should be a good place for a bite! The outside looks particularly impressive on a dark evening. The crescent shaped bar is very ornate with lovely gilded mirrors and lots of original features. The bar was crowded when I visited. I ordered a London Pride which The Guvnor started pulling then stopped after a second or so saying he would not serve the beer as it looked like it was going off, I was impressed. I ordered ESB instead which was gorgeous. I then sat down with The Bairn and about 5 minutes later he brought me a free of London Pride, doubly impressed! We ate here and the food was excellent though a bit pricey - well it is West London! There are lots of mirrors and lights all over the place. A spiral staircase leads to a library and a theatre bar. The library ( below) is very exquisite and seemingly David Bowie had a gig here in I was so impressed with this pub I came back the next day and bumped into a lad who works at Nissan! I drank all the Fullers range here the Pride, ESB and Oliver's Island and all were excellent examples. A much better pub than The Star Tavern. This is a really friendly local pub with a beautiful interior, great beers, good food, shame it's in West London! For more information on CAMRA s Real Heritage Pubs use this link uk/pub-heritage

CAMRA Angle 52 - Summer A NORTH YORKSHIRE GEM I have been visiting the North Yorkshire Moors for many years now and thought it was time to visit a pub that has been on my list for a while The Birch Hall Inn in the tiny hamlet of Beck Hole, just outside Goathland. So why this pub in particular? Well as the Good Beer Guide describes it, an unspoilt family run rural gem. It also features in the Real Heritage Pub Guide. It is nestled in a steep valley floor next to a small stream and as you can see from the photograph below, it is two buildings joined together. There are two bars, called the Big Bar and Small Bar with a sweet shop squeezed in the middle. On the day of our visit under a cloudless blue sky in May, the small right hand bar was closed so entrance was gained into the big bar through the left hand door. ( In the white fronted part of the pub) Above - door to the sweet shop on the left, door to the little bar on the right. The big bar is not really big, probably enough seating for 30 people, who are served through a hatch which is actually the link between the two bars. A micropub surely? There was no TV, music or gambling machines there was no room. While ordering the beer, which was in excellent condition, I asked if it was OK to leave some CAMRA Angles. The guy behind me in this two man queue was also a CAMRA member, from Nottingham. He had forgotten to bring his branch magazines something I usually do! Adjoining the stream, called the Murk Esk is an excellent pub garden, which was probably larger than the two bars combined. Above, at the top of a steep wooded bank, passes the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. While sitting enjoying a pint of Black Sheep Bitter, one of three Yorkshire beers they sell, a steam train passed with occasional glimpses of it as it headed south from Grosmont to Goathland. So what a great place, I suppose we were lucky with the weather and I understand there are restrictive opening hours during the winter; this could easily be a snowed in place like Tan Hill Inn! I can t think why on earth we have not been before. It is out of the way and is not really on the way to anywhere and a mile from any civilisation and public transport, but I recommend seeking out if you are in the vicinity and have a designated driver. More details, including opening times and location can be found on Whatpub. Ken Paul

CAMRA Angle 52 - Summer DOWN MEMORY LANE WITH CAMRA ANGLE 5 years ago. The Summer edition reported that a documentary film called The Vaults had been made in The Museum Vaults Sunderland. This 30 minute film was about the pub and the people who drank there. The edition also announced the launch of Whatpub with instructions on how to use it. At that time there were 100 real ale pubs in the branch, there are now 112. On the brewery front there were reports from the then four breweries in the branch ; Darwin, Maxim, Temptation and Jarrow and that the latter were just starting work on their new brewery premises in Bede Industrial Estate, Jarrow. 10 years ago in issue 18, it was reported that Bull Lane Brewery in Sunderland had brewed a lemon & ginger beer. Nowadays flavoured beers such as this are not so much big news, but at the time this must have been quite a novelty. As you may know, the brewery has now closed. The Kings Arms proudly advertised that it was Branch and Regional Winner of Pub of the Year for 2006, 2007 & 2008 and that it was just a short walk to the Stadium of Light. Last time I checked, there was a river in between! The CAMRA Locale initiative was launched nationally, having been created in the Nottingham branch of CAMRA in Locale promotes pubs that sell locally produced real ale. 15 years ago in 2003, the front cover of Issue 3 reported that Fitzgeralds in Sunderland were presented with North East Pub of the Year. This 16 page edition also recorded that CAMRA had released the results of a price survey, concluding that real ale remains good value for money at under 2 a pint! There was also mention of the fact that the licensing bill was close to Royal Assent, getting rid of Britain's archaic licensing laws and allowing flexible opening.
