5 A guide to the Scotch whisky regions Like wines, the single malts of Scotland are grouped by region although these regions offer a guideline rather than a rule. The regions of Scotland the Lowlands, the Highlands, Campbeltown and the island of Islay have their origins in the regulation of licences and duties, but they do also embrace certain characteristics. The Lowlands This area tends to produce softer malts, without the peat of the Highlands or the brininess of the coastal malts. The Lowlands is defined by a line following old county boundaries and running from the Clyde estuary to the River Tay. The line swings north of Glasgow and Dumbarton and runs to Dundee and Perth. The Highlands, Islands and Speyside By far the largest region, the Highlands embraces wide variations in style. The western Highlands have only a few scattered distilleries, and it is difficult to generalise about their character. If they have anything in common, it is a rounded, firm, dry character, with some peatiness. The far north of the Highlands has several whiskies with a notably heathery, spicy, character, probably deriving both from the local soil and the coastal location of the distilleries. The more sheltered East Highlands and the Midlands of Scotland (sometimes described as the South Highlands) have a number of notably fruity whiskies. None of these Highland areas is officially regarded as a region, but the area between them, known as Speyside, is universally acknowledged as the heartland of malt distillation. This area, between the cities of Inverness and Aberdeen, sweeps from granite mountains down to fertile countryside, where barley is among the crops. It is the watershed of a system of rivers, the principal among which is the Spey. Although it is not precisely defined, Speyside is commonly agreed to extend at least from the River Findhorn in the west to the Deveron in the east. Within this region are several other rivers, notably the Livet. The Speyside single malts are noted in general for their elegance and complexity, and often a refined smokiness. Beyond that, they have two extremes: the big, sherried type, as typified by The Macallan, Glenfarclas and Aberlour; and the lighter, more subtle style. Within Speyside, the River Livet is so famous that its name is borrowed by some whiskies from far beyond its glen. Only one may call itself The Glenlivet, only Braes of Glenlivet and Tamnavulin are produced in the valley, and only Tomintoul in the parish. These are all delicate malts, and it could be more tentatively argued that other valleys have malts that share certain characteristics. The Highland region includes a good few coastal and island malts, but one peninsula and just one island have been of such historical importance in the industry that they are each regarded as being regions in their own right.

6 Campbeltown On the peninsula called the Mull of Kintyre, on the west coast of Scotland, Campbeltown once had about 30 distilleries. Today, it has only two. One of these, Springbank, produces two different single malts. This apparent contradiction is achieved by the use of a lightly peated malt in one and a smokier kilning in the other. The Campbeltown single malts are very distinctive, with a briny character. Although there are only three of them, they are still considered by serious malt lovers to represent a region in their own right. Islay Pronounced "eye-luh", this is the greatest of whisky islands: much of it deep with peat, lashed by the wind, rain and sea in the Inner Hebrides. It is only 25 miles long, but has no fewer than eight distilleries, although not all are working. Its single malts are noted for their sea weedy, iodine-like, phenolic character. A dash of Islay malt gives the unmistakable tang of Scotland to many blended whiskies. Slainte mhoiz and slaandjivaa BOISDALE WHISKIES LIMITED EDITION Bottled by Berry Bros & Rudd Boisdale Teaninich, Highlands Beguiling and fruity with perfumed aromas emerging. Passion fruit, a touch of lime and polished oak invite further exploration. The palate delivers waves of vanilla, yellow fruit and honey with some toasty influence. 7 The Scottish Malt Whisky Society Collection at Boisdale ABV per 50ml 1239 Art in a Bookshop Cafe 46.4% Cask No Age: 24 years Outturn: 158 bottles The nose was ever-changing and abundant fruit falling in orchards (apple, pear, grass) painted canvas and polished wooden frames, a bookshop-café (chocolate gateau, coffee, books); fudge, caramel, heather honey and pepper. It turned fresher with water scented soap, pear tarte tatin, peaches and mangoes. The palate was beautifully sweet, boasting toffee, butterscotch, caramel shortcake, banana custard and rice pudding with cinnamon. It also delivered apple, orange, poster paint and a chewed pencil. In reduction ice-cream with fruit, pot-pourri, basket-work and oak gentle, sophisticated and bearing all the DNA of old Speysides. You pass the distillery on the road to Carron Decadent and Delicious 57.2% Cask No Age: 20 years Outturn: 214 bottles The nose, delicate and sophisticated, evoked an elegant lady (perfume, leather handbag, silk purse) in a tea-shop with jasmine tea, Battenberg cake, pear tarte tatin, sweet Muscat wine, flowers and pine cones on her table. The palate was rich, decadent and delicious buttery fruit cake, jellied fruits, lots of orange (mandarin flan, Fry s Orange Cream, orange blossom) and cinnamon spice in the finish. The reduced nose found Oreos, carrot cake, chocolate limes and glorious dark chocolate raspberry brownie. The palate now rewarded us with soft vanilla fudge, perfumed nectarines, teasing ginger and Old English Spangles. The distillery name means big stream Strangely Fascinating 52.7% Cask No Age: 21 years Outturn: 253 bottles Fragrant and exotic smoke delights the nose also tarry ropes, sesame oil, ginger, lavender, lemon, coal and soap saltier after water. The palate is mouth-filling and strangely fascinating smoked pork, seaweed, ash, Turkish delight, honey, passion-fruit and sweet pickled fish.

8 1247 Highland Streams and Daisy Meadows 52.2% Cask No Age: 23 years Outturn: 260 bottles The nose has sherbet lemons, pear-drops, daisy meadows and lemon juice on green apples crisp and clear as a Highland stream. The palate offers vanilla, custard creams, honeycomb, lemon groves, gin botanicals, white grapes and heather flowers juicy and lip-smacking.

9 712 Compass Box Asyla 40% If you wanted to convert someone who says they don't like whisky, you couldn't do much better than this. 713 Compass Box Flaming Heart 48.9% This is a vatting of Highland Malt from a village near Brora (nudge, nudge), with some smoky Island/Islay malts. 714 Compass Box Hedonism 43% Supple & silky, with elegant, rich flavours of vanilla, toffee, coconut and cocoa. 716 Compass Box Oak Cross 43% A vatting of top quality Highland malts that undergo a unique secondary maturation in American casks capped with new French Oak heads. 717 Compass Box Peat Monster 46% A top-quality vatting of the peated Speysider Ardmore with some choice Islay malt, Peat Monster is never less than excellent. 718 Compass Box Spice Tree 46% The very welcome return of Compass Box's 'Spice Tree', originally barred by the Scotch Whisky Association but now tweaked to fir rules. Clean and polished malt with a touch of honey and spice. 601 Aberlour 10yr 40% Aberlour 10yo is a great entry level malt, ideal for beginners, with a fine sherried spiciness. 602 Aberlour 16yr Double Cask 43% This 16 year old has been double matured in traditional oak and sherry casks. 603 Aberlour 18yr 43% Perfect structure. Initial notes of soft apricot and cream offset by developing flavours of liquorice and oak with a touch of honey. 604 Aberlour A'bunadh Batch % Another fantastic batch of Aberlour's A'Bunadh, which means 'the original in Gaelic, matured exclusively in Spanish Oloroso Sherry butts. Batch 53 has an abv of 59.7% Aberlour % A rocking vintage whisky from Aberlour, a must try; you can t buy this whisky anywhere else for love nor money Ailsa Bay 48.9% The inaugural release from Ailsa Bay peated Lowland whisky. For this first release Grant's have decided to go for smoke, creating a rare peated lowland. It's got a rich and earthy backbone, with sweet liquorice and touches of tar. 605 An Cnoc 12yr 40% This lip smacking 12yo An Cnoc (formerly Knockdhu) is a top-quality proponent of the non sherried Speyside style. 606 An Cnoc 16yr 46% It is light yet complex, smooth yet challenging, with each twist and turn delivering a surprise. 607 Antiquary 12yr 40% Each whisky selected to combine all the strengths and subtleness of Scottish whisky at its best Ardmore Traditional 46% 9.30 If you ve yet to get into peaty whisky this is the place to start. Gentle peat with lovely vanilla coming from American quarter casks. 619 Arran Malt 10yr 46% Arran 10yo is a medium bodied, citrusy dram that shows an elegance and deftness of touch that belies the distillery's youth.

11 ABV per 50ml 609 Ardbeg 10yr 46% Ardbeg was officially established by the MacDougall family in 1815, the same year as Laphroaig. 610 Ardbeg 1972 Cask % An cask-strength Ardbeg from the hugely desirable 1972 vintage, 611 Ardbeg yr Cask % A big sherried Ardbeg, this single cask is from a 1976 batch of sherry casks that took Ardbeg's reputation into the stratosphere. 612 Ardbeg Renaissance 55.9% This is the first 10-year old Ardbeg that is entirely comprised of spirit produced after Glenmorangie's takeover of the distillery in A fitting end to the series. 613 Ardbeg 1998 Almost There 44.1% Following on from Very Young and Still Young it shows the final stage in the evolution of young cask-strength Ardbeg 1998 before blossoming into the Renaissance 10 year old. As expected it is a mellower, more rounded, better balanced dram than the younger incarnations. 614 Ardbeg Blasda 40% Ardbeg Blasda is a lesser peated version of many people's favourite Islay malt, being just 8ppm in bottle instead of 23ppm like in 10yo. 615 Ardbeg Corryvreckan 57.1% This is a very enjoyable dram at full strength created to replace Nam Beist appetising, powerful and moreish. 616 Ardbeg Supernova % This is the peatiest Ardbeg ever at over 100ppm. This is the 2010 version of Ardbeg Supernova, and no doubt will be hoping to follow on from the success of last year's edition, which scooped Scotch Whisky of the Year from Jim Murray's Whisky Bible Ardbeg Uigeadail 54.2% A marriage of Ardbeg from bourbon barrel and sherry butt which gives a sweet and smoky finish to this malt. 763 Ardbeg Lord of the Isles 46% This is a very special Ardbeg, weighing in at 25 years and as wonderful as it gets, with a cult status and aspirational price tag Ardbeg Very Young 1997 Committee Reserve for Discussion Ordinarily you d have to be a Friend of Ardbeg to get a nip of this, but in this instance being a friend of Boisdale will also do! 58.9%

12 620 Arran Malt 14yr 46% Released in late 2010, this Arran 14yo is intended to be the standard issue bottling, taking over from the 12yo that appeared in late Arran Machrie Moor Sixth Edition Peated 46% Lightly peated to 20ppm, this is named after the eponymous peat bog located on the west coast of the island and has proved a popular addition to the distillery's range. 618 Arran Malt 18yr 46% Following 2015's limited-edition first release, Arran has now added its 18-year-old whisky to the core range. A rich and complex whisky, with notes of citrus, orchard fruit, milk brioche and dark chocolate. 626 Arran Malt 9yr Port Cask Finish 50% A bold, sweet Port finish from Arran, released in late Bottled at 50%, so some water may be preferred. 622 Auchentoshan 12yr 40% Auchentoshan Distillery was established in 1838 and continues the lowland tradition of triple distillation Auchentoshan 18yr (New Style) 43% After maturation in 100% American oak casks, this Auchentoshan is a step up from the 12yo. 624 Auchentoshan yr Cask % An old 1990s single cask bottling of cask strength Auchentoshan Auchentoshan Three Wood 43% Matured initially in bourbon casks before being finished in Oloroso or Pedro Ximenez. 623 Auchentoshan 18yr 1980 s 43% After maturation in 100% American oak casks, this Auchentoshan is a step up from the 12yo Auchroisk 10yr Flora & Fauna 43% This single malt lies at the heart of the Auchroisk range, it being the only official bottling. 627 Bailie Nicol Jarvie 8yr 40% 7.50 Has one of the highest % malts for any blended whisky and includes only "first class" blending whiskies. 628 Balblair % Known to blenders as a category 'A' malt, Balblair is a terrific malt whisky worthy of more exposure than it has previously enjoyed. 629 Balblair 1997 Bot % If you like bourbon matured whiskies, this is for you. 630 Ballantine's 17yr 43% Full-bodied, with creamy vanilla notes, this is one of the best blends available anywhere.

You won t find many of these! 636 Balvenie 12yr Doublewood 40% Balvenie Doublewood s extra complexity and richness are a result of a second maturation in fresh sherry casks. 637 Balvenie 12yr Single Barrel First Fill 47.8% Limited edition bottlings, with each bottle being one of no more than 300 drawn from a single cask. Intense! 638 Balvenie 14yr Caribbean Cask 43% This is a sweet and luscious Balvenie taking plenty of sweetness from the rum casks used to age it. 639 Balvenie 15yr Sherry Cask 47.6% Balvenie 15yo Single Barrel is always a complex proposition, due to the higher alcohol content. 640 Balvenie 17yr Double Wood 43% A 17 year old version of the best-selling double wood. 704 Balvenie Tun % Deep and rich on the nose, with floral notes, sweet vanilla and orange peel. Velvety smooth to taste with tangy citrus, mellow cinnamon spice and blossom honey. 641 Balvenie yr Single Cask 49.7% A classic old full strength bottling of Balvenie from a first fill bourbon cask. 642 Balvenie 21yr Port Wood 40% Maturation in port pipes has given this aged Balvenie an extra level of depth and concentration of flavour. 706 Balvenie 25yr Single Barrel 47.8% Deep and rich with overtures of oak and spice on the nose. Honey notes are overlaid with gentle spices and a silky vanilla oakiness. 643 Balvenie 30yr 47.3% Great depth with rich dark chocolate, hints of plum, marzipan and caramelised pear. The finish is smooth and warming with gentle spice and lingering sweetness. 696 Balvenie 40yr 48.5% An incredible limited whisky, with only 150 bottles worldwide, and an elegant balance of bourbon and sherry, amplifying the Balvenie honeyed style rather than hiding it underneath the whisky's age.

Very sophisticated. 633 Ballantine's Finest 43% 7.80 Blended from more than 50 single malts as well as 4 single grain whiskies Bell s Royal Wedding % A collectable Bell s decanter celebrating the wedding of Prince Andrew & Miss Sarah Ferguson on 23 rd July Bell's Royal Vat No s 43% An incredibly rare 1930s ultra-deluxe bottling from blending powerhouse Bell's. 695 Ben Nevis yr Sherry Cask No % A 1996 vintage distillery bottling of Ben Nevis. This was bottled in September 2012 after spending 15 years maturing in ex-sherry cask number This was distilled in the same year the distillery relaunched its range after a period of closure during the 1980s. 646 Benriach 10yr 43% Benriach is a distillery firmly on the up after an unusual and occasionally difficult past. 683 Benriach 12yr 43% A deliciously fruity, honeyed 12yr from reborn Speysider Benriach. A terrific dram for the money. 647 Benriach 16yr 40% Peated Speysider Benriach is terrific malt from a distillery that has really shot up after years of Seagram neglect. 648 Benriach 1966 Rare Reserve 43.9% This 42 year-old is from the 1966 vintage and has been bottled at natural cask strength of 43.9%. 649 Benriach 25yr Authenticus Peated Malt 46% Benriach Authenticus is a big smoky whisky from this Speyside distillery that delights in experimentation. 650 Benriach 30yr 50% This bottling combines bourbon-matured Benriach finished in Oloroso sherry butts with Benriach fully matured in Gomez sherry butts. 651 Benrinnes 15yr 43% The only Speysider to be triple-distilled like a Lowland or Irish whiskey, but with a lot more body and character.

Becomes earthier on the nose and sweeter on the palate with water. 655 Benromach 10yr 43% Benromach is the smallest working distillery in Speyside, employing just three people to make its whisky. 657 Benromach Organic Special Edition 43% A special release of Benromach's well-known Organic malt whisky. This version has been matured in virgin American Oak casks. 658 Black & White Spring Cask 1950s 40% Black & White from the days when it was Dean Martin's whisky of choice. 660 Black Bowmore yr Sherry Cask 40.5% Just over twelve years after the previous release, a legend is reborn. Selected from the same batch of Oloroso casks as the previous bottling s. 661 Black Grouse 40% 7.55 This blend is based on peated Islay malts, and promises 'reassuring smoothness with aromatic, peaty flavours'. 662 Bladnoch 19yr 54.5% Dry earthy dark chocolate notes balance wonderfully with the citric nose of this pale golden dram. 663 Blair Athol 12yr 43% This expression has always tended towards the chunky, sherried style, with spices and oak adding complexity to rich maltiness. 664 Bowmore 12yr 40% Bowmore was the first of Islay's distilleries to receive a license, springing fully formed into official existence, Bowmore 15yr Darkest 43% The high proportion of sherry ageing means that sweetness take precedence over peat here. 725 Bowmore 16yr % A 1990 vintage Bowmore bottled in the mid 2000 s after 16 years of maturing in sherry casks. A big and rich dram with traditional Bowmore floral peat smoke Bowmore 17yr 46% Beautifully balanced, rounded palate with notes of soft chocolate, toffee apples and a little wood smoke.

16 666 Bowmore 18yr 43% Fresh, with notes of salty kippers and coal smoke and a fruity character coming through. 667 Bowmore 25yr 43% A large percentage of casks used to assemble this are exsherry, giving sweetness and depth to this complex, fruity Islay malt. 668 Bowmore yr Single Malts of Scotland 40% An immensely perfumed Bowmore in its true form from this era. A very nice dram at high strength but this whisky has enough weight to balance all the flavours. 669 Bowmore Tempest 10yr Batch 3 56% For ten years these first fill Bourbon casks have lain in vaults just inches from the battering waves of Loch Indaall. 670 Bowmore 25yr Bot.1980 s 43% Matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and European sherry casks this is the oldest regular expression from Islay's oldest distillery. 671 Brora 1972 Map Label 40% is regarded as a miracle year for Brora, and this version won 96 points from Brora expert Serge Valentin on Whiskyfun. 673 Brora 25yr Bot % This was the first ever official bottling of 25 year old malt from the much mourned Brora. 674 Brora 30yr 55.7% Gorgeous fruit, with much less emphasis on smoke & peat this time. 675 Bruichladdich 10yr Classic 46% It was bottled next to Loch Indaal as a state of the art distillery by The Harvey brothers in 1988, not much has changed since. This is the new workhorse age statement at the distillery, replacing the original 12 year old Bruichladdich 12yr 46% If you d rather the traditional age statement from Bruichladdich, here it is, but getting rarer by the minute Bruichladdich 18yr 46% This whisky has been mainly aged in ex-bourbon casks and then finished in French oak barrels which used to contain sweet Jurancon, a dessert wine from the south west of France. 680 Bruichladdich Black Arts III 48.7% This is the third release of the Bruichladdich Black Arts series. The recipe is kept a strict secret and the bottle features the arcane symbols seen on earlier releases.

The texture is rich and robust with the maltiness of the barley very much at the fore. 698 Bunnahabhain 12yr 46.3% This 12 year old is lightly peated for an Islay single malt and consequently is a light, fresh dram. 684 Bunnahabhain 18yr 46.3% Bunnahabhain is known as the smoothest and most subtle of the Islay Malts, with a distinctive oiliness and whiff of sea air. 686 Bunnahabhain 1968 Auld Acquaintance 43.8% Distilled on the very last day of 1968 and released 34 years later to bring in the new year of Bunnahabhain yr 45.4% A very limited release of 1980 vintage Bunnahabhain, bottled at full proof. 688 Bunnahabhain 25yr 43% A more sherried style, with soft, creamy complexity and gentle, sophisticated palate and mouth feel. 690 Cameron Brig 40% 7.00 A single grain whisky from Scotland's largest distillery, Cameronbridge. Used for all Johnnie Walker blends. 691 Caol Ila 8yr % An unpeated version of this famed Islay malt.
