2 THE aluminium revolution More and more craft brewers are choosing cans over glass bottles. But after some sceptisism so are the general public. So what are the reasons behind this uprising? TASTE Unlike bottles, cans protect beer from two arch enemies sunlight and oxygen. Oxygen makes beer taste odd. Exposure to light, meanwhile, will make the beer lightstruck. This adorns the beer with an unfortunate, unpleasant skunk-like aroma. What s more, the seal on a can is a lot more secure than a bottle cap which means that oxygen doesn t get in and carbon dioxide doesn t get out. This means that the flavour is locked into the beer for longer. Regardless of where the beer is stored it stays fresher for longer in can. Modern cans are lined with a water-based coating especially designed to protect the craft beer inside. Preventing the so called metallic taste of canned beers. PERCEPTION The words canned beer fills many a discerning beer drinking with dread. Fizzy, tasteless, mass-marketed lager is usually the first notion that springs to mind. But now there are a wave of new breed brewers that are making it their aim to change this belief. At one time it was only the big breweries that were able to afford the expensive equipment needed and could supply enough beer for the big batch canning lines. Recent breakthroughs and technological advances have resulted in the emergence of smaller, less expensive canning lines enabling an increasing number of microbreweries to package their craft beer in cans because it s their belief that it is the best way to look after their great beer. ENVIRONMENT Let s think of our future as well as our taste buds. Not satisfied with being better for your palette, canned beer is also concerned about the welfare of our beautiful planet. Cans are 100% recyclable and don t always require labels or other additional packaging. Cans weigh less than glass, this creates a smaller carbon footprint in terms of transportation and storage. CONVENIENCE Cans are easier and more convenient for outdoor events music festivals. Cans, if dropped, don t break. They are durable and very dependable.
