Healthy Lifestyle Program WHAT WE ARE ALL ABOUT The Healthy Lifestyle Program HEALTHY LIFESTYLE TEAM Our Program works with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in Tasmania to raise awareness of the health impacts of tobacco smoking. Assist in reducing the use of tobacco and raise awareness of the health impacts of smoking. Assist in reducing the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who take up smoking. Assist in reducing the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people who take up smoking. Increase understanding and awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of the impacts of exposure to environmental and secondary tobacco smoking. The Team implements a range of community-based programs, we support activities which are tailored to the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. To date, the priority has been to conduct and/or participate in community events and focus on tobacco cessation health promotion providing information and building relationships. The Healthy Lifestyle Team is a Tasmania-wide initiative. We hope to be working with you soon to deliver programs that will improve the lives of individuals within the community. 3 WHAT S GOING ON AROUND THE STATE? Save the date! 20TH March NATIONAL CLOSE THE GAP Equal access to healthcare is a basic human right, and in Australia, we expect it. So what if we told you that you can expect to live almost 20 years less than your next-door neighbor? You wouldn t accept it. No-one should. But in reality, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People can expect to live up to years less than non-indigenous Australians. The appalling state of Indigenous health has many causes. Working in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is one of the critical success factors. With continued support from the public, we can ensure the Australian Government continues to work with Indigenous communities, recommit additional funding and invest in real partnerships CHAC Garden: On the 24th and 25th of March Cody and Tania will be traveling down to Circular Head to work in collaboration with CHAC to construct and plant raised veggie beds on their property at TRAWMANNA. The establishment of the gardens will promote improvement of availability of fresh goods, enjoyment and community sharing of knowledge. The project will improve communities awareness of nutrition and also the benefits of being active. Men s Shed: FIAAI are holding their annual Men s Health night on the 19th of March, in the shed at the local automotive garage Baileys. It is a chance for the fellas to discuss their health, get their BP checked and any questions answered by GP -Dr. Tim Flanagan or RN -Maree Crawford. Tim New (FIAAI Maintenance man) will be the guest speaker for the night showing a slide show and having a chat about Antarctica, which is where he was before travelling to Flinders Island. 3

4 RECENT & UPCOMING PROGRAMS. Save the date! SETAC MEN S GROUP: On March 25th Jade from the Healthy Lifestyle Team is taking the SETAC Men s Group in to Hobart, They will be going to Anglesea Barracks for a tour of the Army Barracks and then go to the army museum on base. Netball Team s: Quit Café When: 11am Where: 85 Canning Street What: The Quit Café is a free, informal and supportive group environment in which to share with others the journey and experiences you are going through 4

5 RECIPE OF THE MONTH Braised Mutton birds Ingredients 8 Skun Mutton Birds (remove excess fat) 1 cup of home made tomato relish (If you do not have relish then replace with Rosella fruit chutney) 2 cup of water ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce 2 sliced onions Cook's notes Preheat Oven at 160 C for about 15 min Place mutton birds in baking or casserole dish. Spread onion over the top of the birds and cover. Mix homemade relish, Worcestershire sauce and water together and pour over birds. Put in oven bake on 160C for 90 min Remove from oven and thicken with Gravox and place back in oven for 5 minutes Serve with mash and vegies Yum Enjoy Eat Bananas: What to plant in March PLANT: Garlic clovers, celery, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, winter lettuce, silver beet, spring onions, chives and leeks. SOW: Beetroot, carrot and parsnip early in March only. People whose diets are rich in potassium may be less prone to high blood pressure. Besides reducing sodium and taking other heart-healthy steps, eat potassium packet foods such as bananas, cantaloupe, and oranges. 5

6 HEALTH TOPIC OF THE MONTH Lets talk about it! FOOD FOR LIFE. Perhaps someone will one day discover not only does food give life but it could also become the miracle drug of the future curing disease's together with exercise and will not cost a fortune because it is naturally available to us all. If we are given clean uncontaminated water and air together with soils in a natural state why would this not be possible. For example a seed from a plant, shrub or tree contains all it needs to give it life under the right conditions to germinate and grow into a healthy plant taking from the soil its needs to sustain life. Another example could be the egg of the Muttonbird, that contains everything to create life for living chick. The Muttonbird is a wonderful example of the power of nutritive properties that are naturally provided by the adult birds from our ocean's environment. After birth the chick is fed in rotation by the parent birds whom gather minute fish species, Krill, zooplankton and algae. The young chick grows quickly and it's body breaks down the food resource it is fed, into an oil which is them turned into fat that covers much of the body under the skin. It is at about this stage of its life that the parent birds stop feeding the chick and it survives on the nutritional properties of the fat until it is able to fly away from the island of birth to the northern hemisphere and the arctic circle, all this within a few months. A part of the secret as to what might provide such stamina for this epic journey may be found in the marine omega 3's provided by our ocean's in the food resource the parent birds gathered, and provided. Medical research and science is recognizing the potent qualities of these omega 3's and they are being used in areas of healing and wellness that include. Heart Cardiovascular. Brain food. As an anti inflammatory of treating conditions such as Arthritis and painful joints etc. Skin food. Booster for the immune system. These healing acids are found in plant, fish and some species of birds that live in and off our colder ocean environs. We may benefit healthwise with marine omegas whether it is the flesh, plant or the fish oil capsule we consume that have these marine omegas 3's in them. 6

7 TIPS AND HINTS Arriving at one goal is the starting point to another! Herbal teas The early morning chill signals the start of Autumn and the cooler months ahead, now is a great time to try some new herbal teas, which not only taste delicious but are super good for you and your body. These are some of the most popular herbal teas and why they may help keep you healthy Chamomile tea from the daisy family, both fresh and dried flowers can be seeped in hot water to help with insomnia, PMS, migraines and anxiety. Use the cooled tea bags to help reduce dark circles around your eyes. Green tea has been used as a medicine in China for thousands of years. It s less processed than black tea so it s full of anti-oxidants which may benefit weight loss, diabetes, indigestion and food poisoning. Ginger tea the underground stem can help with many everyday problems like digestive disorders, colds, fevers and allergies. Research has shown that it may also benefit major illness such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Rosehip tea is the fruit of the rose and an excellent source of vitamin C which is important for your skin and tissue repair, immunity and adrenal function. Raspberry Leaf tea is particularly good for pregnant women. It can help relieve morning sickness and later in your pregnancy, two to three cups per day may lead to an easier delivery. Peppermint tea- due to its high menthol content, peppermint will help get us through a long, cold winter as its excellent for sinus and upper respiratory conditions. Sipping cool peppermint tea can also help relieve hot flushes in menopause. 7
