Started i 1975 by the Departmet of Wildlife o a 25 acre cocout property o the Maha Oya river at Rambukkaa the orphaage was primarily desiged to afford care ad protectio to the may baby elephats foud i the jugle without their mothers. I most of these cases the mother had either died or bee killed. I 1978 the orphaage was take over by the Natioal Zoological Gardes ad a captive breedig program itroduced i At Piawela a attempt has bee made to simulate, albeit i a limited way, the coditios of the wild with aimals ecouraged to roam freely durig the day allowig a herd structure to develop. A particular favourite for visitors is the baby feedig sessio whe ifats are had bottle-fed milk, ad of course the everpopular daily bathig ritual. At 10am ad 2pm every day the aimals are walked from their eclosures across the mai road ad 400m dow to the river Maha Oya for a two-hour splash about i the water. We were lucky eough to catch this icredible sight - aroud twety of them stadig i the shallows waitig to be splashed with water by their keepers. Youg oes stayig close to their elders, domiat oes showig their stregth with a display of aggressio ad truk blowig, all ejoyig their outig with a blatat igorace of all about them. Herded out of the river for their short jourey back, they pass so close we ca almost reach out ad touch their craggy backsides. They seemed to kow the routie well, a familiar amble up betwee the giftshops, hostels ad cafés, their massive backsides brushig the daglig souveirs ad elephat memetos, leavig a cloud of dust ad the trikets swayig getly i the herd s wake.
