2 Employees of the Month December 2017 Gia-Yen Ngo and José Luis Rodriguez Gia-Yen grew up in a family passionate for the culinary arts. Her father owned a restaurant in Nova Scotia, where Gia-Yen hails from, and she has fond memories of growing up watching her grandparents cook. This five-time winning Employee of the Month is a Senior Cook and has been with us for 13 years. Gia-Yen cooks a variety of cuisines but her sushi creations and desserts truly display her unique talents. She says that the best part of her job is working alongside the culinary team and states that all her co-workers are great. José Luis has been with for 15 years and this is his 10th time being awarded Employee of the Month. He has also been Employee of the Year three times. These notable accomplishments speak for themselves. José Luis says, I am proud and happy to be here. This is one of the best teams I have ever worked with. Aside from being one of our top cooks at, José Luis also has a special talent for making ice and fruit sculptures. His diverse designs range from the very grand and intricate to the whimsical, all to the delight of our members. Outside of work, José Luis loves being a loving grandfather to his three grandchildren. Congratulations, Gia-Yen and José Luis, for jobs well done! 2 Valentine's Day Did you know the origin of Valentine s Day? Legend has it that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage for young men because he thought that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families. Valentine realized the injustice of this decree, defied Claudius and continued to marry lovers secretly. Claudius ordered that Valentine be put to death when his actions were discovered. Some believe that Valentine s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine s death or burial, which may have occurred around 270 A.D. Here are some trivia about Valentine s Day - Did you know that it was considered bad luck to sign a Valentine s Day card during Victorian times? Statics indicate that there are about 1 billion Valentine s Day cards exchanged every year, making it second to the Christmas holidays. In Finland, Valentine s Day is more about remembering your friends or buddies rather than your sweetheart. In the Middle Ages, young men drew names from an urn to see who would be their Valentine. These names would be worn on their sleeves for one week for all to see. This is seen as the origin of the expression, to wear your heart on your sleeve. 73% of people who buy flowers on this day are men, while only 27% are women. And, 15% of U.S. women send themselves flowers on Valentine s Day. Last but not least, an average of 220,000 wedding proposals are made on Valentine s Day. Celebrate Valentine s Day with your sweetheart here at The Athenaeum. It will be the best Valentine s Day present as Chef Kevin and his chefs will create a dinner menu to make a memorable evening even more outstanding. And there will also be dancing (cheek-to-cheek) to a live band. Call early to make your reservation as this evening sells out. Since Valentine s Day falls on a Wednesday, the regularly scheduled prime rib night buffet will not be available. A special Valentine s prix fixe dinner will instead take its place. 4 Makes 4 Servings Sweet Pumpkin and Peanut Curry 2 Tablespoons canola oil 1 Tablespoon garlic, minced 4 shallots, minced 2 Tablespoons yellow curry paste 16 ounces vegetable stock 2 kaffir lime leaves 1 Tablespoon fresh ginger, grated 1 pound pumpkin, peeled, seeded and cut into one-inch dice 8 ounces sweet potato, peeled and cut into one-inch dice 1 cup peanuts, roasted and chopped 10 ounces coconut milk 1 cup mushrooms, sliced 1 Tablespoon soy sauce 2 Tablespoons fish sauce 1/3 cup pumpkin seeds (toasted) Salt to taste Chef s Cooking Corner 1. Heat a large pot over medium heat. When hot, add the canola oil, garlic, and shallots and cook, stirring until golden. 2. Add the yellow curry paste and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant. Then add the vegetable stock, kaffir lime leaves, ginger, pumpkin and sweet potatoes. Bring to a boil stirring frequently, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes. 3. Add the peanuts, coconut milk and mushrooms. Stir in the soy sauce and fish sauce and simmer for an additional minutes.
