2 Employee of the Month October 2013 Valinda Richardson (Marisu s Message Corner) (Adapted from Jingle Bell Rock by Bobby Helms) The Athenaeum s Office Manager, Valinda Richardson, was honored as October s Employee of the Month. Since 2010, Valinda has worked alongside General Manager Marisu Jimenez, assisting her and meeting the needs of our administrative offices. Valinda supports the club s management team and coordinates staff communications. Members of The Athenaeum s various committees know Valinda for her friendly s and helpful presence in their meetings. For the fourth year running, she is the club s United Way Ambassador for Caltech s annual campaign. Away from The Athenaeum, Valinda lives in Pasadena and enjoys the many cultural opportunities offered in the Los Angeles area. She can often be found watching live theater and viewing museum exhibits. Valinda has participated in community theater, including Caltech s theater arts group, TACIT, and has taken swing dancing classes for several years. As a UCLA alum with a degree in English, she is still a voracious reader. Aside from being a fan of the arts, she is also a big sports fan. You can count on Valinda to give you the highlights from the recent Lakers or Dodgers game. Valinda is recognized throughout the club, among members and coworkers, for her dependability, graciousness, and superior quality of work. She treasures working at The Athenaeum because of the true jewel it is to the Caltech community and the great group of people she gets to work with each day. Congratulations Valinda! HOLIDAY FUND Marisu Jimenez General Manager It s holiday time again! At this time, Athenaeum members will have already received a letter for The Athenaeum Employees Holiday Fund. Contribution to this fund is voluntary. Traditionally, members contribute between 10 to 20 percent of their total expenses for the year, or any amount they wish to give. The Athenaeum Employees Holiday Fund is an annual tradition by which the club s members are able to express their appreciation to the club s staff, as The Athenaeum is a non-tipping club. After the Holiday Fund donations are collected, the total is distributed among all non-exempt Athenaeum employees in amounts based on job performance, years of service and hours worked. The Fund includes both the employees who are highly visible and those who are behind the scenes. An important portion of the employees annual earnings comes from this fund. Please note that the club s Service Charge does not represent a gratuity or tip for our staff members. The service charge becomes part of the club s operating income. 3 Executive Chef Kevin s Recipe Corner Pumpkin Caramel Bread Pudding Ingredients 5 cups half and half 12 eggs 1 ½ cup pumpkin puree, fresh or canned 2 cups brown sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ¼ teaspoon ground clove ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 Tablespoon vanilla extract 1 cup dried cranberries 10 large baked croissants, cut in 1 inch cubes 2 Tablespoons butter, room temperature Directions 1. In a large mixing bowl, mix together thoroughly the half and half, eggs, pumpkin puree, brown sugar, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and vanilla. 2. Add the dried cranberries and cut croissants to the mixture and mix. Let soak for 1 hour. 3. Spread the butter onto the baking dish and pour the mixture into the dish. Cover with aluminum foil. 4. Bake at 325 degrees for approximately 40 minutes or until set. Remove from the oven and pour the caramel sauce over the top, recipe follows. Let set for at least 20 minutes Caramel Sauce 1 ½ packed cups brown sugar ¾ cup half-and-half 6 Tablespoons butter Pinch salt 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1. Place all ingredients in a small sauce pot and bring to a boil, turn to a simmer and cook for 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat. Enjoy Cooking! Orders are required 24 hours in advance and can be made by calling (626) As 2013 is coming to an end, it is a wonderful time to make a charitable contribution to the preservation of The Athenaeum s legacy. A year-end gift is a great way to significantly lower your taxes while providing meaningful support for the ongoing improvements of the club. Your donation makes an important difference in the capital improvements we undertake every year. The Athenaeum Architectural Preservation Fund has been established to finance refurbishment and renovation projects. This endowment may be funded by outright gift such as cash, securities, or real estate, and via planned gifts. With your support, we can build a permanent endowment for the purpose of preserving and enhancing the extraordinary legacy of this prestigious club.
