4 ed s note You know that one dish? The one that, when you breathe in its aroma or take the first bite of it, you re teleported right back to your family kitchen. For me, it s cottage pie. I actually didn t like it growing up and couldn t understand why my mom would make it so often. But now, there s nothing I find more comforting than the smell of buttery mashed potato cuddled up to a casserole of herby, slightly spicy mince. I d make it purely for the trip down memory lane. That s the beautiful thing about food. Not only does it unite us in the present, it ties us to our past. It is a constant reminder of who we are and where we come from. For many South Africans, gathering around a braai, watching the chops and boerie sizzle away evokes those feelings. It s a way of life close to our hearts so close, it s how we celebrate Heritage Day. So, besides the meat and potato salad, all you need on Sunday 24th is this copy of MyKitchen.
