4 Arrangement of Study Tour Activities Under Typhoon and Rainstorm Warning Signals 1. When Rainstorm Amber or Red Warning Signal Issued If a Rainstorm Amber or Red Warning Signal is in force before the study tour programme begins, study tour participants are expected to come to the activities provided that it is permissible under the prevailing traffic and weather conditions. If a Rainstorm Amber or Red Warning Signal is issued in the middle of the day, the study tour programme will continue and IIBD office will remain open. 2. When Typhoon Signal No.8 or above Hoisted / Black Rainstorm Warning Signal Issued Time Typhoon No.8 or above / Black Rainstorm Warning Signal is issued when activities are in progress Typhoon No.8 or above / Black Rainstorm Warning Signal is issued between 6:15 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Typhoon No.8 or above / Black Rainstorm Warning Signal is issued between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Typhoon No.8 or above / Black Rainstorm Warning Signal is issued after 3:00 p.m. Arrangement All activities will be suspended immediately. 8 Useful Information about Staying in Hong Kong Hong Kong Climate There are 3 ways to find detailed current and seasonal weather information: 1. Visit the Hong Kong Observatory website: 2. Call (free) and press '3' for English to check the latest weather situation 3. Download the smartphone app MyObservatory provided by Hong Kong Observatory. Seasons Hong Kong has a subtropical climate with distinct seasons. Typhoon season is from May to November. When a typhoon is approaching, warnings are broadcast on TV and radio, and signals indicate its significance, the latest position and expected movement of the centre of the tropical cyclone, information on the wind strength, rainfall and sea level in the territory. When typhoon signal 8 is hoisted, businesses and shops are closed and flights may be cancelled. There is a separate warning for heavy rain. Spring (March May) Temperature and humidity are rising. Evenings can be cool. Summer (June August) It is hot, humid and sunny, with occasional showers and thunderstorms. The temperature can exceed 31 C / 88 F. Autumn (September November) There are pleasant breezes, plenty of sunshine and comfortable temperatures. Many people regard these as the best months of the year to visit Hong Kong. Winter (December February) It is cool, dry and cloudy, with occasional cold fronts. The temperature can drop below 10 C in urban areas. 6

10 Hong Kong Public Transportation Public transportation in Hong Kong is convenient, efficient and economical. You are recommended to purchase an Octopus Card, a value-stored card which is available for most of the public transports except taxi in Hong Kong. Octopus Card can be purchased at any MTR (Metro) Station, and topped up at any MTR Station and 7-11 store. Minibus There are 2 types of minibuses in Hong Kong. Red-topped Minibus Provides changes Pay while getting off the bus Stops anywhere and anytime when someone wants to get on or off along the route Green-topped minibus Need to pay the exact fare Pay while getting on the bus Designated stops 8

11 TO GET OFF THE MINIBUS, just stand up and say STOP HERE, then the driver will stop. Or you may be brave enough to say YAU LOK which means you want to get off in Cantonese. Bus Exact fare is needed for riding all buses; no change will be provided and Octopus Card is available for payment. Most routes are air-conditioned and run until midnight. Bus routes and time schedule are clearly shown at the bus stop. Check it out first so that you won t be waiting forever for a bus which might not be scheduled to come. 9

13 Bus # Fare Note 6 6A 6X 260 $7.90 $8.40 $8.40 $10.60 Route: Admiralty (HK Island), Stanley Market From Admiralty to Stanley Market: Board at Admiralty MTR Station Exit C1 MTR MTR (Mass Transit Railway) is well known for its efficient and clean subway system which covers all major districts in Hong Kong. The fare table and maps of different routes are available at the station and on its website. The nearest MTR station to the University is Kowloon Tong which is minutes walk from the University. Website: Taxi Charges are counted according to the meter. Flag fall of urban taxi is $22 for the first 2 km and additional charges of $1.6 per 0.2 km thereafter. After the chargeable amount has reached $ 78, the charge is $1 per 0.2 km. Most of the taxi drivers do not speak English well, so it is wise to take the hotel address card in Chinese with you in case you get lost. 11

15 Transportation from Hong Kong International Airport to HKBU If it is your first time to fly to Hong Kong, you may visit the Hong Kong International Airport website at There are 3 ways to come to HKBU from the Airport: Airport Express It takes 20 minutes from the Airport to Kowloon Station, where you can take a taxi to HKBU. The fare is HK$90 for a single journey and HK$160 for a round trip (valid for one month). It costs around HK$60 and takes 30 minutes from Kowloon Station to HKBU by taxi. You may visit the Airport Express Website: for more details. Taxi It costs approximately HK$ to take a taxi directly from the Airport to HKBU, including the Tsing Ma Bridge toll. It is worth and economical to take a taxi in a small group, though HK$5 will be charged for each piece of luggage. To get to the taxi stand, please follow the signs and take the down-ramp on the left when you get out of the Arrivals Hall. Separate aisles are designated for different taxis, and you should take urban taxi (red) to HKBU. Airport Bus You may take the Airport Bus E22, which costs HK$18 and takes around 1.5 hours from the Airport to HKBU. To get to the Airport Bus Terminus, please follow the signs and take the down-ramp on the right when you come out of the Arrivals Hall. You may ask the bus driver to remind you to get off at the stop Junction Road 聯合道, and then you may take a 10-minute walk to NTT International House (Renfrew Road) or Undergraduate Halls (Baptist University Road, right behind the NTT International House). 13

16 Hong Kong Population and Language About seven million people live in Hong Kong, making some districts among the world s most densely populated areas. Yet more than 70 percent of Hong Kong s total area is rural, including about 40 percent designated as protected country parks. This means Hong Kong has one of the world s highest ratios of conserved parkland. Almost 95 percent of the population is Chinese. Chinese and English are the official languages. Cantonese is the most widely spoken Chinese dialect, though the use of Putonghua (Mandarin) is growing. All major signage is in English or is bilingual. Most people in the service industry speak English. Laws and Customs Identification It is required by law in Hong Kong that all persons must carry a valid identification. Failure to do so may risk being fined by the police if caught. Therefore, you should carry your passport at all times. If you lose your passport, make a police report at the nearest station call (Police Hotline) to find one. Then, contact your embassy/consulate to have your passport replaced. Smoking To further protect the public from the hazards of second-hand smoking, the Hong Kong Government has expanded statutory no-smoking areas to all indoor workplaces, indoor public areas, indoor areas of restaurant premises, public transport terminuses, public transport interchanges with indoor places, bars, karaoke establishments, schools, hospitals, escalators, parks, swimming pools and beaches etc. Smokers caught in no-smoking areas will face a fixed penalty of HK$1,500 (~US$193). Safety Hong Kong is a remarkably safe city by day or night. Police officers patrol frequently and are helpful. Nonetheless, as in all big cities, avoid carrying large amounts of cash; travellers cheques or credit cards are preferred. If you go to crowded areas, always look after your own belongings and beware of pickpockets. The Hong Kong Police Force has stations and reporting centres throughout the territory. 17 Tipping Most restaurants add a 10 percent service charge as tips, marked on the bill. Waiters normally expect to be given some loose change. When a service charge is not included, tipping 10 percent is acceptable. For taxi drivers, just round up the fare to the nearest dollar. Shopping The vast majority of shops are open every day. Generally, shops are open from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. But there are exceptions. Stores in busy retail areas like Causeway Bay and Tsimshatsui stay open even later, perhaps until 9:30 p.m. Those in Central, meanwhile, usually close at 7:00 p.m. Use of Credit Cards In general, most shops and restaurants accept VISA, MasterCard, and American Express cards. Unlike some of your home countries, some shops and restaurants in Hong Kong do not accept credit card if the amount of purchase is less than HK$200. Some shops charge the bank service charges for credit card purchases. Please ask the shop attendant before you make a purchase. Banking Hours Major banks are open weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and some on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. They close on Sundays and public holidays. Services such as foreign exchange transactions may stop an hour before closing. 18 10 Tips for Staying in Hong Kong 1. Bring a folding umbrella when you go outside An umbrella cannot only be your shield on rainy day, but it can also shelter you from the hot sunshine in summer. 2. Bring a light windbreaker with you When the thermometer hits 30 degrees Celsius, expect to see many local people wearing warm clothing - this is to protect them against the harsh air-conditioning often found on public transport and in places like cinemas. 3. Bring your own tissues Some washrooms and restaurants may not provide toilet paper and napkins, as many local people always bring their own tissues. 4. No area code Hong Kong is just too small to require an area code while making a local call. 5. Tipping Most restaurants add a 10-percent service charge as tips, marked on the bill. Stand on the right on escalators When riding escalators especially those in MTR (subway) stations, always stand on the right. The left is for anyone wishing to walk up or down and keep the flow of people moving. 8. Tap water Tap water in Hong Kong has been proven to be drinkable, although a number of local people still prefer to boil and chill their drinking water after it is taken from the tap. Bottled water is widely available. 16

19 9. Expect always walking Hong Kong can be quite walking-intensive since bright and pleasant pedestrian walkways are provided in most areas. People can walk for what seems like miles in comfort as shops and restaurants are all around. 10. ATM You can easily find ATMs in every MTR (subway) station, bank branches and most of the shopping malls. They support two global networks, Cirrus and PLUS for your home bank s credit card and debit card. Contact your card centre to check the maximum amount of money you can withdraw from ATM each day, and inform them you are going to use it in Hong Kong to avoid security blockage. 17
