1 WELCOME TO 2016 PI SUMMER GRADUATE PROGAM MATHEMATICS AND CLIMATE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS! There are several items you need to know before you arrive. We hope the information provided makes your stay more inviting and easier to find your way around. Arrival All participants must arrive on July 17, Check-in will be at your KU housing, K.K. Amini Scholarship Hall, located at 1318 Louisiana Street, Lawrence, KS A reception and dinner will be held that evening at the Amini Scholarship Hall beginning at 5:00 pm. The summer program will begin on July 18, 2016 at 9:00 am at the LEEP2 active-learning classroom at the School of Engineering, room This is about a ten-minute walk from your housing. KU also has bus system that can take you through campus. All participants are expected to attend everyday. Airport Shuttle Service The nearest airport for Lawrence is Kansas City International (MCI) and is about a one-hour drive to Lawrence. We plan to pick up clusters of participants from the airport. We will notify those participants we are able to pick up and can make arrangements for groups shuttles for the return trip. Other shuttle arrangements can be made ( Departure The last day of the summer program is August 4, 2016 at 12:00 pm. You must check out of your housing by 9:00 am. You can store your luggage on the last day in the LEEP2 classroom. Lodging Participants will stay at the K.K. Amini Scholarship Hall, Room assignments will be made by the conference organizers. Service Desk There is a 24-hour service desk staffed in GSP Hall (where you have your evening meal). A service member will make their rounds of Amini Scholarship Hall around 7:00 pm each evening. This central contact can provide: Access card and room key replacement. Contact information for on-call and after-hours staff. Help to report building and maintenance concerns.

2 Campus maps, directions, and general area information. Dining information. Lost Keys and Cards During check-in, participants are issued a red access card that allows you to enter only your building and to use the dining center. A lost or malfunctioning card can be replaced. You should inform a conference organizer and the service desk at your building. Lost cards should be reported immediately so KU Student Housing staff can electronically disable the card. Individual room keys will be distributed to each guest at check in. Room keys are not transferable. If a key is lost, stolen or broken, immediately notify the service desk staff. For security purposes, it is important to report a lost card or key immediately. The access card and room key should be kept on the blue lanyard that will be given to you. Linens Linen packages are provided for your room. Extra linens will be available in the living room area. Linen packages have: a fitted bottom sheet flat top sheet pillow and pillow case warm blanket. Extra blankets and towels are available at the front desk. The temperature in the rooms run on the chilly side. Laundry is available in the lower floor of the building. High capacity, high efficiency machines are operated by KU Card. Laundry cards can be purchased through the service attendant. The cost will be charged to the conference. It costs $3 per one load of wash and dry. Technology For housing, Wireless Internet is available upon request. Upon check in, each participant will get a unique user name and password. Internet service in Student Housing is provided through Apogee. Their customer service is available 24 hours a day, KU Student Housing does not provide Internet on campus, such as in academic buildings or the KU Memorial Union. At the LEEP2 classroom, KU offers a guest wireless network, KUGUEST. You can access this though your wireless devices by selecting the KUGUEST network. KU is also a member the eduroam network. If you are visiting from another eduroam institution you can use make use your eduroam login. Please consult your technical department for eduroam setup instructions before leaving your institution. A land-line telephone is located in the scholarship hall entrances and each floor lobby, but not in guest rooms. Land-line phones may be used for 911 and on-campus calls only.

3 Common Spaces Furniture in common spaces should not be moved and personal property should not be left unattended. Housing is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Safety and Security Make sure you always have your room key and access card. Immediately report any lost key or card to the service desk. Do not allow anyone you do not know into the building. Be sure to look for others who may be trailing behind you or your group when you enter. Never prop doors open. Immediately report any suspicious activity, people, or vehicles to KU Student Housing staff. Do not leave any personal items unattended in public spaces. Emergencies In case of emergency, call 911. For non-emergencies, visit the 24-hour service desk. For after-hours emergencies, your staff will be given the on-call number for the Assistant Conference Coordinator. Staff members who are key contacts in emergencies will wear red lanyards. Participants should seek out the person wearing a red lanyard in an emergency. Conference emergency contacts are Erik Van Vleck ( ) and Gloria Prothe ( ). Conduct All participants adhere to the KU alcohol and drug policies. Alcohol and drugs are prohibited in all KU facilities. There is no smoking (including e-cigarettes) in KU building and within 20 feet of the entrances. Participants keep the room key and building access card. If either is lost, report it immediately to staff and KU Student Housing service desks. Participants will treat the buildings with respect. Damaged or excessively dirty areas may result in additional charges. Participants will treat all other guests, both in their group and in other groups, with respect. Dining Guide Participants will be provided with an access card to be used with KU s computerized system. Conference access cards are encoded with the dining plan and do not work past the date of the conference. Cards also are encoded with the hall in which the guest will be residing and that hall s dining center. Only those carrying a valid conference access card or those paying cash are allowed in the dining room during service hours. The conference access cards are coded with: A set amount of cash ($$$) is allowed on each card to use at nearby campus dining locations. In particular, we suggest using the cash allowance to purchase breakfast. The closest location is the KS Union that has several dining options.

4 For lunch, the dining card allows unlimited eating at Mrs. E s Lewis Hall, closest to the Engineering building. For dinner, the dining card allows unlimited eating at North College Café, 500 W. 11 th Street, GSP Hall (two blocks from your housing). The dining hall is open until 7:00 pm. On the evenings of special events, there will be no dining at North College Café. Let us know in advance if you have any special dining needs. Parking/Campus Transportation Parking is free at the Amini Scholarship Hall. Parking on campus requires a permit or cash at the parking garages and meters. KU and Lawrence have a bus service. KU on Wheels ( runs through campus and you do not need to pay to ride on campus. It is at least a ten-minute walk from your housing to the Engineering building. You can get on the bus at the KS Union and get off at the School of Engineering (Eaton/Learned Hall). It will cost to ride the bus to locations off of campus ( The bus does not run on Sundays. Special Events July 17, SUN, 5:00-8:00 pm: Amini Scholarship Hall. Welcome reception and dinner. July 20, WED, 5:00-7:00 pm: KU Alumni Center. Wednesday Social Hour. Food will be provided. July 26, TUE: Konza Prairie trip. Will need sun screen, hat and sunglasses. Temperature could be above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. July 27, WED, 5:00-7:00 pm: KU Alumni Center. Wednesday Social Hour. Food will be provided. July 29, FRI, 5:30-7:30 pm: Amini Scholarship Hall. Friday Night Dinner. August 3, WED, 5:00-7:00 pm: KU Alumni Center. Wednesday Social Hour. Food will be provided. Events Around Lawrence KU s Natural History Museum, located on Jayhawk Boulevard next to the KS Union, features liveanimal exhibits, the famous Panorama and displays of fossils and Kansas wildlife. It also includes 120 researchers, staff and graduate students, and collections of more than 9 million plants, animals and fossils, and 1.2 million archaeological artifacts. We highly recommend that you find time to visit the museum. Downtown Lawrence, located on Massachusetts between 6 th and 14 th streets. There are several shops, restaurants, and parks in the area. Movie Theaters: Liberty Hall, 644 Massachusetts ( ). This theater mostly shows independent movies. Regal Southwind Stadium 12, 3433 Iowa Street. You would need a car to go to

5 this theater. It is currently remodeling, so there is a smaller viewing of movies. Public outdoor swimming pool is downtown, 745 Kentucky. It is open from 1:00 8:45 pm. ($4) The website Lawrence.com contains a list of daily events in Lawrence. Douglas County Fair, July 28-July 30, 2110 Harper. Youth who participate in 4-H and FFA clubs show their projects at the county fair. This includes livestock, rocketry, photography, clothing and arts & crafts. You can walk around and check out the exihibits. There is a Demolition Derby on Friday July 29, 7:30 pm. There is a charge ($10) to attend this event. You would need a car to get to the fair grounds.
