3 I NTRODUCTION I ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE FOREST OF MANSOUR One day, I decided to venture into the Forest of Mansour. Now take care, I said to myself. Look out for the three wise ones who protect the secrets of the forest. And, whatever you do, don t harm the fir trees! The wise ones watch over them. Yet they have much work to do: they are getting ready to deliver the end-of-year presents What a dream it would be: to make my way into the forest to find out the secrets of the three wise ones. Master Hare is known for his swiftness. He speeds across the Ourika Valley, protected by the Atlas Mountains, not far from Marrakesh. That, I believe, is where they make all the presents. Master Fox is cunning. I am sure I saw him yesterday in the Place Jemaa El Fna well, I saw the presents he was handing out. He himself vanished like a magician: one minute he was there, the next, he was gone. When I returned to my riad, there, piled in front of the fireplace, were the presents I d been dreaming of. A few moments before, on the terrace, I d heard the flapping of wings in the pomegranate trees. It was surely Master Owl, who flies by cover of night to deliver the presents. Oh brightly lit fir trees, tell me how to find the three wise ones of the Forest of Mansour! Listen to your inner child, they reply! Let him or her imagine how the rest of the story goes, and carry it with you through this festive season.
