1 Gluten-Free Food Service (GFFS) Foods Available on Prescription to Patients December 2017 Pharmacy and Prescribing Department NHS Shetland Gilbert Bain Hospital Lerwick Phone:
2 Introduction Each month, patients who have been registered by their doctor to the Gluten-Free Food Service (GFFS), will have to order them from their chosen pharmacy. Coeliac UK, the world s oldest and largest Coeliac Disease (CD) charity, has with NHS Scotland developed a table of food units that will be used to give patients a suggested number of units for consumption within a calendar month. Please see the table below to check that your unit allocation has been correct and that you are using the correct amount to create your monthly food order. As nutritional requirements vary between; genders, ages, levels of activity, lifestyle and occupation, so too do the Units reflect this. The unit allocation should allow you to receive a proportion of your energy requirements from Gluten-Free foods, on prescription. Monthly Gluten Free Food Prescription Requirements Suggested number Age of units per month Child 1-3 years 10 Child 4-6 years 11 Child 7-10 years 13 Child years 15 Child years 18 Male years 18 Male years 16 Male 75+ years 14 Female years 14 Female 75+ years 12 Breastfeeding Add 4 units 3 rd Trimester pregnancy Add 1 unit 2
3 The List of Products The list below does not include all foods that are currently available on prescription. Instead, it has been created using NHS Shetland prescribing information about the most commonly prescribed Gluten-Free food items used in Shetland, over the recent months. The products on the list have also been selected based on their availability through our network of community pharmacies in Shetland, and their suppliers. Products which have costly delivery expenses have not been included in this table of products. Gluten-Free food products such as biscuits, cookies, cakes and other sweet items should be self-funded by the patient. These products are available locally and are not thought to be essential parts of the diet. They also contradict the NHS public health campaigns and messages that are there to promote the importance of eating healthily and therefore have not been included within this list. A small variety of plain biscuits have been included, however a maximum of 3 units per month should be used by these. Units per Food TYPE Food item <400g bread g loaf/bread 1 600g+ bread g rolls/baguettes g rolls/baguettes 1 500g bread mix/flour mix 2 <199g savoury biscuits/crackers g+ savoury biscuits/crackers 1 250g pasta g pasta g+ pasta 2 2x g pizza bases 1 500g oats g breakfast cereal g xanthan gum 1 Number of units 3
4 Fresh Gluten-Free bread products may be ordered too. Fresh products have to be ordered in bulk (6-8 loaves depending on the manufacturers batch sizes). The maximum number of units per month should include the need to order these quantities. In order to obtain the bread as efficiently and freshly as possible, patients are advised to work with their pharmacy team and choose the appropriate ordering day for them. The list has been compiled with the aim of obtaining products that are available from the usual pharmaceutical wholesalers without added delivery charges. Where a product attracts an extra delivery charge, this will not normally be covered by NHS Shetland. The list will be reviewed annually in order to keep it up to date and in line with patient preferences and requests. If something is on the formulary that you normally receive, please tell a member of your pharmacy team. 4
