1 Abutilon x hybridum Variegatum (Chinese lantern plant or floweringmaple) 2 4 Zone Grow in rich, medium moisture, welldrained solids in full sun to part shade. Needs consistently moist soils. As a houseplant it should have high light and be kept close to room temperature. H 2-4 W 2-4 Upright, branching plants. They are low growing woody subshrubs that acts as herbaceous perennials in colder climates, supposedly hardy only in zones 9-11, but will survive in some colder areas as long as the plants have excellent soil drainage. Solitary, pendant orange flowers borne on long pedicels. Aeonium arboreum Zwartkop (black rose) 4 4 Zone Dry to medium moisture, full sun. Not frost hardy, must be brought in to overwinter. H 1-3 W 1-3 Rosettes of burgundyblack leaves at the ends of stalklike stems. In winter, bright yellow flowers contrast with the dark foliage. Zwartkop is a wonderful backdrop plant that can show off many companion plants to maximum advantage. Agastache bolero 2 1 gal. Zone Grow in average, well-drained soil in full sun. H W Brilliant rose-purple flower spikes rise above compact clumps of bronze-green, aromatic foliage. This deer resistant perennial adapts well to dry soils and is perfect for rock gardens, xeric plantings and containers where it will attract hummingbirds and butterflies Athyrium filix-femina (lady fern) 3 1 gal. Zone 4-8. Easily grown in rich, medium moisture, well-drained soil in part shade to full shade. H 1-3 W Deciduous fern that features lacy-cut, erect or ascending, 2-3 pinnate or pinnatifid, finelydivided, lanceolate, light green fronds which grow in a dense circular shuttlecock-like clump.

Crytomium fortunei var. clivicolum (arching Japanese holly fern) 2 1 gal. Zone 6-9. Part shade to full shade, evenly moist, alkaline soils. Good soil drainage is essential to protect roots from winter rot. H 1-2 W 1-2 Evergreen with large dull, holly like fronds. Descaisnea fargesii (dead man s fingers) 6 1 gal. Zone 6-9. Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Intolerant of drought and hot summer climates. Keep soils consistently moist. Best sited in locations protected from cold winds. H W Upright, multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub with long odd-pinnate, dark green leaves above and glaucous green below. Exceptional metallic blue bean-like fruit pods in autumn.

H W Clump-forming plant with golf ball sized blue flower heads atop stiff, rigid stems clad with deeply lobed, dark green, thistlelike foliage. Echium pininana (giant viper s bugloss tree schism) pink or blue?? 1 1 gal. Zone Grow in moderately fertile, welldrained Avoid excessive winter wet. Protect with horticultural fleece in autumn. Scientifically classed as a 'triennial' since it typically lives for three years, flowering 1-2 years after sowing. H 10 W 3 A rosette-forming biennial or short-lived perennial with lance-shaped, roughly silver-hairy leaves. Grow in humusrich, moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. H 2-3 Evergreen perennial with lance-shaped, sinuately lobed basal leaves. Unbranched racemes of pink flowers with a deeper pink stripe down the centre of each petal.

4 Hakonechloa macra Aureola (Japanese forest grass) 2 1 gal. Zone 5-9. Rich moist soil with good drainage. Light to dappled shade. Requires regular watering during dry periods. H 1.5 W 1.5 Rhizomatous, deciduous perennial grass. Gracefully arching, bright green land gold eaves, form dense, spreading, cascading mounds. Cut old leaves down in Dec. Great Plant Pick Helleborus orientalis 2 1 gal. Zone 4-9. Easily grown in organically rich, fertile, humusy, medium moisture, well-drained coils in part shade to full shade. Pink flowers mid to late winter extending into early spring. Hesperantha coccinea Rosea (river lily, crimson flag) gal. Zone 7-9. Moist, welldrained Shelter from strong winds. H 2 W 1.5 Semi-evergreen perennial from South Africa. Pink blooms in August to October. Hydrangea arborescens Annabelle 1 1 gal. Zone 3-9. Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in part shade. Tolerates full only ingrown with consistent moisture. Intolerant of drought. H 3-5 W 4-6 Loosely and widely branched deciduous shrub. Opposite, broad egg-shaped to rounded, sharply toothed, dark green leaves with pale green undersides. Leaves turn yellow in fall. Tiny white flowers blooming May-July in flattened hairy clusters. Scattered continuing flowering may occur throughout summer to September. Iris (bearded iris) Zone Best grown in humusy, medium moisture, sun. Best flowering and disease resistance occur in full sun. Good soil drainage is essential. H 2-3 W 1-2 Rhizomatous iris with sword-shaped, glaucous, linear leaves and large usually fragrant blooms on tall stalks.

Flowers are very fragrant and make excellent stems for cutting and pot pourri. Rabbit and deer resistant. Ligusticum scoticum (Scottish lovage) 2 4 Zone 4-8. Succeeds in any well-drained soil in a sunny position. Prefers moist. Dislikes shade. H 8-20 W 12 Deciduous perennial An unusual umbel with thickset, multi-lobed, sculptured leaves with short stems of offwhite flowers from July to August. Liberita grandiflora 5 1 gal. Zone Grow in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun; will tolerate light shade. H 30-3 W 2 Upright, evergreen, perennial, forming a large clump of green, sword-like leaves to 3' topped by spikes of showy white flowers from May to June. Lobelia siphilitica (blue cardinal flower) 6 1 Zone 4-9. Easily grown in rich, humusy, medium to wet soils in full sun to part shade. Needs constant moisture. H 2-3 A clump-forming perennial which features light to dark blue, tubular, 2- lipped flowers with the three lobes of the lower lip appearing more prominent than the two lobes of the upper lip. Dense terminal racemes atop stiff, unbranched, leafy stalks. Lobelia tupa 5 1 gal. Zone Grow in welldrained but fertile soil in full sun. Requires sheltered location. H 4-6 W 3 Woody-based perennial with upright stems to 6 tall, bearing narrow, hairy, grey-green leaves to 12 long, and terminal racemes of tubular, bright red flowers in late summer and autumn.

Phlox paniculata dark pink 4 1 gal. Zone 4-8. Grow in moderately fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Prefers rich, moist, organic soils, H 2-4 W 2-3 Upright, clump-forming perennial. Stiff stems clad with conspicuously veined, opposite, pointed, elliptic, deep green leaves and are topped, in summer, by terminal clusters of fragrant dark pink flowers. H 2 W 1.5 Plants make a bushy, upright clump with a profuse display of browneyed, golden-orange daisies from midsummer through the fall. Seedheads have good winter interest. Thrives in sandy to gravelly soils of moderate to low fertility. Sedum telephium Atropupureum 2 1 gal. Zone 3-9. Easily grown in average, dry to medium, sun. Thrives in sandy too gravelly soils of moderate to low fertility. H 1-2 W 1-2 Succulent herbaceous perennial typically growing in an upright mound on unbranched stems. Her red-hued, glistening stems are upright and lined with luscious blue-green foliage, each thick leaf displaying a vermilion midrib and margin. Sempervivum arachnoideum 2 4 Zone 5-8. Grow in moderately fertile welldrained Protect from excessive winter wet. Suitable for rock garden, scree bed, wall crevice, trough or alpine house. Evergreen perennial forming a mat of fleshy rosettes, leaves green or reddish, with cobwebby white hairs at the tips. Starry pink flowers in flat cymes on stems. Symphyandra wanneri (ringflower) 5 1 gal. Zone 5-9. Grow in average, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. H 6-12 W 12 Upright perennial with hairy, lance-shaped, toothed leaves with winged stalks. Bellshaped, pendent panicles of violet-blue flowers bloom continually through summer. Thymus vulgaris 2 4 Zone 5-9. Easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained Loose, sandy or rocky soils with excellent drainage are best. Uncinia rubrus 2 1 gal. Zone Grow in any moderately fertile, humsrich, moist but well-drained soil. Intolerant of full sun on poor dry soil but will tolerate full sun if soil is constantly moist. Valeriana officinalis 2 4 Zone 4-7. Easily grown in average, medium to wet, sun. Plants tolerate some light shade, but stems may flop as the amount of shade increases. H 6-12 W 6-12 H 15 W 15 H 3-5 W 2-4 Upright, wood-based perennial which is primarily grown as a culinary herb. Tufted, evergreen, perennial sedge with glossy reddish-green or red-brown leaves and dark brown to black flower spikes in summer. Clumping perennial with scented leaves, stems, flowers and roots. Deeply lobed basal foliage from which rise tall, slender, sparsely-leaved stems topped in June-July by highly fragrant, white to pale pink flowers in branched panicles.

9 Zauschneria californica (California fuchsia, hummingbird flower) gal. Zone Full sun (at least 6 hrs) well-drained soil. Drought tolerant once established. Won t tolerate soggy roots. Deadhead after flowering, but leave to overwinter. (protection from cold) Prune back hard in the spring. H Perennial plant with bright scarlet flowers in summer and fall. Self-seeds readily. Rhizomes can be transplanted in winter or spring. Hummingbirds love this plant.
