2 Sample Content for the Old Oakland Farmers Market Market Information The Old Oakland Farmers Market is a member of the Urban Village Farmers Market (UVFM) Association, a Non-profit Mutual Benefit Corporation formed in March 1997 to provide the best possible opportunity for farmers, food vendors, and community members to preserve, enhance, and enjoy regional fresh quality foods. UVFM s mission is to: Promote the family farm, Help protect the local environment by sustaining and restoring surrounding greenbelt areas, and above all, to help build real community by fostering economic and social ties between producers and consumers. Bringing Communities Together We have enjoyed the role of bringing California s agriculture and urban communities together for their mutual benefit, increased communication, and shared education. Our presence as a key educational medium for schools, environmental causes, and health and nutrition programs has been rewarding. The Certified Farmers Markets have become important harmonious community meeting places, blending the various and diverse neighborhoods, which builds a strong sense of community. The Urban Village Farmers Markets have been instrumental in many cities successful efforts to revitalize economically and socially depressed downtown areas. It is also gratifying to be instrumental in preserving the diversity of California agriculture by providing profitable marketing outlets for the small acreage growers of heirloom, culinary, ethnic, organic, and other specialty crops not widely grown on a large scale, or found at traditional food sources. Zero-Waste Zones In January 2010, all Urban Village Farmers Markets stopped using plastic grocery bags. Customers are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags, and biodegradable bags are also be available for purchase at the market. Recycling and compost receptacles can now be found at every market location, and Urban Village hopes to eventually make our markets Zero-Waste zones, where all packaging can be either recycled or composted! Vendor Description Jardin des Étoiles has been bringing their fresh Mediterranean vegetables and herbs to the market for more than three years. Owners Jean-Paul and Susanne La Pierre offer tips on preparing their produce, recommend seasonal recipes, and have even been known to share their own lunch with customers interested in new items. Their vegetables are often served in some of the area s best restaurants, and other vendors at the market, such as Nanny Goat Chevre and Sweet As Honey, use their fresh herbs in their products.
3 Chef s Demo Shop with the Chef and join Chef Ashley Sharpe from Alameda Brasserie. She will be demonstrating how to preserve lemons and use them in Moroccan-inspired vegetarian dishes. Chef Sharpe will meet everyone at the cooking stage at 11.30a, walk through the market gathering fresh and local items to cook, and return to the cooking stage at noon for the demonstration. She will be available to autograph copies of her latest cookbook, North Africa Vegetarian, after the demonstration. You may bring her book or purchase one at the market. Performing Artist Wine & Roses will be performing their French cafe music from 10.00a until noon at the music stage. CDs and a limited number of discount tickets for their upcoming show at Lulu s Jazz Cafe will be available for purchase. Special Event Create Your Own Story Book for children ages 4 to 10 will be hosted by Denise Drake and staff from MOCHA (Museum of Children s Art.) Join us in the children s play space from 11.00a until noon to create your own artwork and cover for popular children s stories. We ll provide the pre-printed stories, coloring pens and pencils, paper, glue, glitter, watercolors, and other supplies you get to take your child s personalized book home with you!
