3 Fall Leader Meeting October 7th, 6:30PM Extension Office Everyone needs to attend this meeting to learn updates for the 2015 Ohio County 4-H Program. We will also be celebrating National 4-H Week, October 6-10, Again this year we will celebrate by distributing Thank You cards and cookie plates to local businesses that support Ohio County 4-H. We are asking each club leader to please bring in 10 dozen cookies to make cookie plates for the leader meeting. If you have any questions please contact Jill or Shannon at the Extension Office. Attention: First year Beef Exhibitors 2015 Beef Scholarship is accepting applications. The scholarship is awarded to a first year beef exhibitor to help with the cost of purchasing a steer. If you or anyone you know is interested in this opportunity please contact the Extension Office for more information Ohio County Fair Dates!!! JUNE 25th-July 4th The Ohio County 4-H Junior Leaders have a BUSY October!! October meeting- Monday, October 6th after school at 3:30 SNACKS PROVIDED -Please bring 1 package (2 dozen/package) of refrigerated sugar cookie dough or 1 container of white icing for our 4-H Cookie icing station! Saturday, October 11th Navy Bean Festival we will be celebrating National 4-H Week at the Navy Bean Festival! Schedule of workers will be filled out at Meeting on Monday, October 6th! If you cannot make the meeting but would like to work a 2 hour shift at the Navy Bean please contact Shannon at the Extension Office! Sunday, October 12th COMPLETION Trip!! WE will be heading to Dagaz Acres for a zip lining adventure! Permission Slips will be available at the Extension Office! We will meet at the EO at 11:30am and head to Dagaz Acres! 6 October Purdue Yard & Garden Calendar By Rosie Lerner HOME (Indoor plants and activities) Keep poinsettia in complete darkness for 15 hours each day, for example, between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m., for eight to 10 weeks until red bracts begin to show. Pot spring-flowering bulbs to force into bloom indoors. Moisten soil and refrigerate 10 to 13 weeks. Transfer to a cool, sunny location, and allow an additional three to four weeks for blooming. Houseplants, especially those grown outdoors during the summer, commonly drop some or many of their leaves in response to the lower natural light intensity in autumn and reduced light intensity indoors. Water indoor plants less frequently, and discontinue fertilizer as plants slow down or stop growing for the winter season. YARD (Lawns, woody ornamentals and fruits) Keep plants, especially newly planted stock, well watered until ground freezes. Have soil ready to mound roses for winter protection. Do not mound or cover roses until after leaves drop and soil is near freezing, usually late November or early December. Strawberry plants need protection from winter's extremes, but applying winter mulch too early may cause crowns to rot. Apply winter protection when plants are dormant but before temperatures drop below 20 degrees F, usually late November or early December. Rake or shred large, fallen tree leaves such as maple to prevent them from matting down and smothering grass. Raking smaller leaves, such as honey locust, is optional. Continue mowing lawn as needed. GARDEN (Flowers, vegetables and small fruits) Harvest root crops and store in a cold (32 degrees F), humid location. Storing produce in perforated, plastic bags is a convenient, easy way to increase humidity. Harvest Brussels sprouts as they develop in the axils of the leaves from the bottom of the stem. Brussels sprouts will continue to develop up the stem. Harvest pumpkins and winter squash before frost, but when rind is hard and fully colored. Store in a cool location until ready to use. Harvest gourds when stems begin to brown and dry. Cure at degrees F for two to four weeks. Harvest mature, green tomatoes before frost, and ripen indoors in the dark. Warmer temperatures lead to faster ripening. Asparagus top growth should not be removed until foliage yellows. Let foliage stand over winter to collect snows for insulation and moisture. Remove plant debris from the garden to protect next year's planting from insect and disease buildup. Compost plant refuse by alternating layers of soil, plant material, and manure or commercial fertilizer. Have garden soil tested for fertilizer needs every three to five years. Plowing and incorporating organic matter in the fall avoids the rush of garden activities and waterlogged soil in spring. Fall-prepared soils also tend to warm faster and allow earlier planting in spring. Carve a Halloween jack-o'-lantern. Dig tender, garden flower bulbs for winter storage. Gladiolus corms should be dug when leaves begin turning yellow. Caladiums, geraniums and tuberous begonias should be lifted before killing frost. Dig canna and dahlia roots after a heavy frost. Allow to air dry, then pack in dry peat moss or vermiculite, and store in a cool location. Complete planting of spring-flowering bulbs.
7 HEALTH & HUMAN SCIENCES Make a Difference Day is Saturday, October 25th! Chocolate A Functional Food? Functional foods are defined as any food or food ingredient that may provide a health benefit beyond the traditional nutrients it contains. A functional food is similar to a conventional food and some examples are soy, garlic, oats, flax seed and chocolate. According to a recent survey, chocolate is the most craved food in America. Women have been eating chocolate as a premenstrual fix for years. Through different studies, chocolate has been found to have health benefits so now, chocolate is sometimes referred to as being a functional food. Some of the health benefits of chocolate include antioxidant flavonal compounds that reduce free radicals, help lower LDL cholesterol and reduce high blood pressure. Dark chocolate is higher in these compounds than white chocolate. Magnesium is a mineral found in significant amounts in chocolate products. Low dietary magnesium may be a risk factor for hyper tension, stroke and cardiac arrhythmias. Women in the US generally don t have get the recommended daily allowance amount for magnesium but a serving of milk chocolate provides 8% of the RDA and serving of dark chocolate provides 15% of the RDA for magnesium. From the information above, one can see that chocolate does have some health benefits, HOWEVER it is important to understand that the fat and sugar content of chocolate does increase the calories associated with chocolate consumption. Other things to consider with chocolate is that the milk that is added can make digestion difficult for those who are lactose intolerant and nuts that are added might affect those with nut allergies. As with any food, the best way to know what it contains is to look at the nutrition facts label. The good news is that chocolate does have some healthy components- just remember to enjoy in moderation! IEHA Make a Difference Week! October 20-24th OCEMS is in need of the following items: Underwear for boys and girls sizes 6,8, 10; Sweat pants for boys and girls sizes 6,8,10; Boys tennis shoes sizes 12/13, size 1 and size 2 Please bring all of you items to the Extension Office by Wednesday, October 22nd and we will get them delivered to the school. Please put your name on your bag and leave the items in Shannon s office. Creamy Chocolate Pudding Recipe Courtesy: recipe/0,, ,00.html 1/2 c. milk chocolate chips 4 T. 1 % low-fat milk 2 oz. light cream cheese, softened 1/3 c. powdered sugar 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract Directions: Combine chocolate and milk in small microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high 1 minute, stirring after 30 seconds. Stir until smooth, cool slightly. Combine cottage cheese and next 4 ingredients through vanilla in food processor and process 2-3 minutes, until very smooth. Add chocolate mixture, process until smooth/ blended. Spoon pudding into serving dishes and garnish with shavings or low-fat wafer cookies if desired.
