1 2018 HEIRLOOM FRUIT TREE ORCHARD SELECTION We are ten years old! LOOK OUT FOR OUR 10 YEAR ANNIVERSAY SPECIALS p:

2 WELCOME TO OUR 2018 FRUIT TREE CATALOGUE Our passion is to help guide our customers to understand and realize the potential in their properties, no matter what size, to be productive landscapes that can help nourish and sustain their inhabitants. Our focus is on heirloom fruit trees and to develop ecosystems that help support your fruit trees to be productive and thrive. We help you realize an abundant landscape from design, implementation through to support and maintenance. Forgotten Fruits have been growing trees here in the Kaiwaka Mangawhai region for the past 10 years. Over this journey we have met many new challenges but like most experiential learning, it has been very valuable. These days it seems more demand is put on speed of productivity. Customers want trees fruiting in their first year. These demands are able to be met when firstly you have a healthy fruit tree grown from a reputable nursery & secondly, correct planting/siting & management. The major thing you learn with any gardening & more importantly for us when running a profitable nursery, is having low inputs & manageable numbers followed by efficient growing techniques. Competition like grass & weeds is a paramount issue to address if you are wanting to grow strong trees & this ethos needs to continue into any planning towards a garden or orchard project. We can t stress enough how important it is to have good soil, a good planting plan suited to your soil type & to take action to keep any grass or weeds at a good distance away from the growing root zone. A good rule of thumb is to mound or add soil if you are on the clay & to dig if on the volcanic or sand. Grass is the worst compeditor & during the summer months grass/weeds will take everything & leave little for the tree so if you want fast productive fruit trees, keep grass & weeds away. All the best for your new planting season, Benji & Laura Woodman

4 OUR 2018 HEIRLOOM FRUIT TREES ORCHARD SELECTION We have been thinking a lot about apples lately. It has been a hot topic of conversation around the dinner table and we have been wondering why there has been a move by orchard enthusiasts, lifestylers and growers to not plant more of the humble yet amazing and versatile apple? We ve have put it down to the way that consumers have become blasé with the flavour that store bought apples have, which in turn has turned-off growers from planting apples in their orchards. If our appreciation of apples were to be simply based on the ones we buy at the supermarket, then what we know for sure is that there are a whole lot of apple varieties that buyers just aren t getting to taste. If only they were able to experience some of these old varieties straight off the tree in their own back yard, it would be a totally different story. It should not just be about the appearance of fruit, which seems to be the trend since exporting came about. Apples that are supplied to supermarkets can get picked way too soon, they become tasteless, floury, bruised and horrible. Your not eating a tree ripened apple, what you eating is a green picked fruit that s been sitting in the cool store for 9 months. Unfortunately consumers are not being exposed to all the beautiful flavours and health benefits that heritage apples offer. Many of our customers have contacted us after a few years, telling us that they re truly delighted with the flavour and texture of their homegrown heritage apples. It would be so much easier to sell these varieties if people could taste them, which we are working on for the future. WE ARE 10 YEARS OLD! To celebrate our 10 th year anniversary we are offering a 25% DISCOUNT on all our EATING APPLE varieties for our 2018 season.
