2 Needs of Plants Plants need light and water to grow. Fruits are unique. Fruits move seeds from place to place in many ways. When you see a fruit of a plant, look at it closely. Look for clues about how it disperses its seeds. Plants need space to grow well. So they must send their seeds away to grow. 2 15

3 Plants throw their seeds. The jewelweed plant has pods with seeds. When a pod is moved, it bursts. This moves the seed away from the parent plant. Seeds move and travel. The seeds of flowering plants are in a fruit. The fruit can help move the seeds. Look at the pictures below. What fruits do you see here? 4 Plants move or spread their seeds in many ways. This is called seed dispersal. The word dispersal means spreading or scattering. Some animals eat fruits with seeds. The seed passes through the animal. It falls to the ground in the animal s waste. Now the seed may start to grow. Birds eat cherries. 4 Bears eat raspberries. 13

5 Animals move seeds. A fruit may have hooks, barbs, or burrs. This kind of fruit sticks to an animal. The fruit moves with the animal. It falls off the animal in a new place to grow. Fruits may be moved by wind, water, animals, or force. Burdock has a fruit with hooks. 12 5

6 The wind moves seeds. The wind moves some seeds far away. New plants will grow from the seeds. They will have more room to grow. Coconut trees grow near the ocean. The ocean carries the fruit to a new location to grow. Coconut Willow trees can grow near rivers. The river can carry its fruits to new places. Willow 6 11

7 Water moves seeds. Water can also help plants move their fruits. The fruits float on the water. The water takes the fruits to a new place. Some fruits have wings. The wings help them move through the air. The fruit of the elm tree helps the seed glide on the wind. 10 7

8 Some fruits have parachutes. This helps them soar in the wind. Dandelion Other fruits have spinners. The spinners stay in the air. The wind blows them away from the parent plant.
