2 ALMONDS Teeming with essential minerals and healthy nutrients, almonds are enjoyed in a wide variety of commercial products. Most almonds are grown in California because of its Mediterranean-type climate. Nonpareil ~The most sought-after almond variety in California~ The Nonpareil shell is characteristically paper thin. Medium to large nut, somewhat flattened. Tree growth is large, upright and spreading. Almonds require another almond variety for pollination. Price ~Exceptional variety~ A medium-sized and plump nut with a paper thin shell. Tree grows upright and hardy to a medium size. Price has some tendency to alternate bear. Almonds require another almond variety for pollination. Carmel ~A heavy, precocious producer~ Elongated nut, medium-sized. Well sealed shell, but soft. Tree growth is medium-sized and stands notably more upright than Nonpareil. Almonds require another almond variety for pollination. APPLES Rich in vitamins and delicious to eat. Best of all, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Red Gala ~An eye catcher every time~ With it s bright, rich red coloring this apple tree is easy to grow and constantly produces flavorful fruit with crisp texture. Needs a pollinizer; use Fuji or Granny Smith. Red Fuji ~Fuji-most popular apple~ The fruit has a sweet and juicy flavor. Noted for its crisp crunch when eaten. Skin is vibrant red coloring. It needs a pollinizer. Use any of the other varieties listed. Smoothie ~Good for apple sauce~ Golden Delicious selection with less russeting and creamy smooth skin. Ripens with Fuji. Not self-fertile. Use Fuji or Granny Smith as pollinizers. Apples, continued Granny Smith Mid October ~Add some zing to your baking~ The flavor of this juicy and crisp apple is tart. It is a vigorous tree and sets crops early and heavy. Great pollinizer for Red Gala or Red Fuji. APRICOTS Orangered When was the last time you enjoyed a great apricot? Do you remember the aroma, the sweet flavor? We do, so we offer varieties with those very characteristics. Bhart cv. (PAF) ~Most popular apricot in France~ Sweet, aromatic, firm apricot with exceptional flavor. Flesh is deep orange with red blush on the skin. Hangs well on the tree. No apricot planting should be without this variety! Use Robada, Royal, or Tardirouge as the pollinizer. Robada (USPP #9890) ~Aromatic choice~ Highly colored fruit, freestone, aromatic and sweet at harvest maturity. Deep orange coloration with a strong red blush on sun-exposed surfaces. Vigorous and upright growth. Selffertile. Nicole ~Really Sweet!~ Very sweet, highly flavored apricot with low acidity. Smaller fruit than other apricots but, packed with flavor. Not selffertile. Use Patterson, Robada or Royal as pollinizers. Royal AKA Blenheim ~All purpose apricot~ Fruit is medium and firm with a sweet flavor and a goldenorange flesh. Use Robada or Orangered as the pollinizer. Patterson Late June ~All purpose~ Most widely planted apricot for canning, drying and fresh eating. Produces huge amounts of fruit and is self-fertile. Ripens about 2 weeks after Robada.
3 ASIAN PEARS Asian pears are some of the sweetest and crunchiest pears you ll find. No waiting, you pick them ripe from the tree. This group of Asian Pears offers a mix of fine quality varieties that harvest a truly unique product. They are commonly referred to as apple pears, salad pears or Nashi. Hosui Mid July to ~Supreme flavor~ Fruit is medium to large with excellent golden brown russeting. Flesh is off-white, crisp and juicy. Tree growth is medium to large, productive, weeping and spreading. Use Shinko as a pollinizer. Shinseiki ~Smooth Greenish-Yellow Skin~ Sweet and juicy. Medium to large fruit with firm, white, crisp flesh. Thin fruit for better sized fruit (leave 1 fruit per cluster or you ll have marbles). Fruit will store for up to 3 months in the refrigerator. For best production add a pollinizer. Atago ~Beautiful, Large Fruit ~ Extra large fruit. Skin is an attractive golden brown with a crisp, sweet and juicy off-white flesh. It has a long bloom period, which makes it a good pollinizer. Fruit will hang on the tree for a long time, and little to no thinning needed. Pollinizer needed. Shinko Mid to Late August ~Exceptional flavor~ Very popular variety. Fruit is medium to large with excellent quality. Skin is golden brown and russeted. Flesh is juicy and sweet. Medium size tree, heavy bearer; shows some fireblight resistance. For best production add a pollinizer. CHERRIES Who can resist a sweet, firm cherry? Few. That s why cherries have become a worldwide favorite and are considered a sweet delicacy. We ve made the best cherry varieties available to you. Santina (USPP Pending) Mid May ~Good Flavor~ Oval-shaped fruit, slightly larger than Bing with similar firmness and good flavor for an early cherry. Mahogany skin has a bright luster. Early harvest and moderately tolerant to rain cracking. Self-fertile. Bing ~The industry s standard cherry~ A premium quality fruit with red skin and meaty flesh. Known for its large, firm, juicy qualities. Best pollen sources are Rainier, Sandra Rose, or Benton. Cherries, continued Benton (USPP #15847) ~High Quality~ Large and firm fruit with an exceptional, mouth-watering flavor and a dark red skin. Rates higher than Bing in taste tests. Moderately resistant to rain cracking and self-fertile. Excellent pollinizer. Rainier (white) ~Sought-after, sweet delight~ Considered a white cherry because of its golden yellow and appealing red blush skin color. Flesh has clear yellow color with exceptional taste. Large, firm fruit, considered top quality. Tree is large and very productive. Use Bing or Sandra Rose as a pollinizer. Sandra Rose (USPP Pending) ~Flavor Galore~ A large, high quality cherry. Fruit is a deep red color with firm red flesh. It is a good producer and will pollinate Bing and Rainier. Self-fertile. Lapins ~Mouth Watering Flavor~ Large and firm fruit with exceptional, mouth-watering flavor and a dark red skin. Resistant to rain cracking. Self-fertile. Excellent pollinizer. PLUMS FRESH AND DRIED Prized for their sweetness, dried plums are a delicious source of vitamins A, B and E. They are enjoyed fresh, in baked goods and as juice. Santa Rosa ~Best all-purpose Japanese-type plum~ Medium to large size with purplish-red skin. Flesh is yellow to amber, red near the skin. Rich, pleasing tart flavor. Excellent fresh and in preserves. Self-fertile in most situations. Tree large, upright and productive. Satsuma Late July to ~Great fresh or in preserves ~ Medium in size, dark dull red skin with deep red flesh. Solid, meaty texture with mild, sweet flavor. Small pit is semifreestone. Use Santa Rosa as the pollinizer. Japanese-type plum. French (Improved) Late August to ~Excellent eaten fresh or dried; European-type plum~ A medium-sized fruit with thick red to purple-black skin and a distinct ovate shape. Flesh is golden yellow with a very sweet taste. Grows upright and vigorous with strong branches. Self-fertile.
4 Peaches, continued PEACHES - CLING Versatile, sweet clingstones are best used for canning, freezing and preserves. All peaches are self-fertile. Ross ~Best for canning, freezing & preserves~ Fruit is large and firm with good color and flavor. Excellent for canning because less sugar is required. Large, slightly spreading tree with outstanding production. PEACHES - FREESTONE Today there are numerous varieties of peaches. Here you ll find some of the finest varieties based on optimum color, taste, firmness and marketability. All peaches are self-fertile. Spring Rose (white) ~Early white peach~ Delightful early white peach that is extremely sweet. Productive tree, thin early for optimum size of fruit. Manon (White) Meynon cv. (PAF) ~French Delight~ This early season white flesh peach is very sweet with a crowd pleasing flavor. Manon was developed in France. Product of Riviera Breeding Program. Springcrest ~Earliest yellow peach~ Start the season with this great peach flavor! The exterior red blush makes this a stunning looking peach. Flesh is yellow with very good flavor. Fruit size is medium to large and firm. Peaches, continued Galaxy (white) Late June ~Out of this world peach~ Large doughnut peach. It is a very attractive, white flesh peach. Flavor is sweet, with low acid. A USDA release. Nectar (white) Early July ~Enjoy with plenty of napkins it s juicy~ This sweet and aromatic fruit is a gift from the Gods. Large white freestone with a tinge of red near the pit. The skin is white to pinkish with an attractive red blush. Juicy, soft, melt-in-your-mouth fruit is best eaten fresh as it is too soft for canning. Red Haven Early July ~An old time favorite~ Firm and medium-size fruit with very good, low-acid flavor. Skin is red blush over yellow. Silver Logan (white) Mid July ~Melting texture~ Large, white-fleshed peach with exceptionally sweet flavor and a melting texture. Sun-red blush on skin. Sensitive to bruising. Gene Elberta Late July ~Knock your socks off peach flavor~ Discovered by our founder almost 50 years ago. A large peach with yellow, blushed red covering. A well-liked fresh market peach that can also be canned or frozen. Heavy producer. Fay Elberta ~Preferred multipurpose peach~ Large fruit with yellow flesh and a premium sweet, juicy flavor. Skin has a colorful blush. A popular and attractive variety. Good for drying, canning, freezing, or eating fresh. Paradise (white) ` ~Generous Producer~ Large strawberry-type fruit with white to pink flesh and some red at the pit. Skin is reddish-white. Good quality and a heavy producer of delicate fruit. O Henry ~Productive with quality~ Large fruit with good firmness and flavor. Skin is highly colored. Late season harvest. High quality and a heavy producer. Late Alamar ~A Fowler Nurseries variety~ Large and firm fruit with yellow flesh, first class flavor, and a blushed skin. Requires a long growing season Fairtime ~Great freezer peach~ Large and round fruit with good firmness and splendidly delicious taste. Skin has a red blush with yellow background. This is a heavy producer.
5 NECTARINES A taste so heavenly, nectarines were named after the Greek God Nekter and thereafter considered the drink of the gods. Many of these varieties are long-time favorites at farmers markets and others are the first releases from the Riviera Breeding Program in France. All nectarines are self-fertile. Jade (white) Momee cv. (PAF) Late June ~Exceptional flavor and superior size~ Sweet but with a hint of acid, large fruit with exceptional color and white flesh. Tree is moderately vigorous. Product of Riviera Breeding Program. Arctic Glo (white) Early July ~Well-balanced taste~ Firm and large fruit with superb white flesh. The sweetness is well-balanced with an acidic flavor and the skin is strikingly bright. Zephyr (white) Monphir cv. (PAF) Mid to Late July ~Most popular nectarine in France~ Large white-fleshed, sub-acid with excellent flavor and aromas. Great firmness. Skin is attractive red to pinkish red over a white background. Product of Riviera Breeding Program. Heavenly White (white) (Proprietary) or Late July to ~First class flavor~ First introduced as a home garden variety for its large size and superb flavor. A winner at roadsides or Pick Your Own where full color is not crucial for consumer satisfaction. Large freestone with superior white flesh and a well-balanced flavor. Zaiger Genetics variety. Fantasia ~Old flavorful variety~ This large freestone is bright yellow with a bright red blush. Flesh is firm and yellow with a delicious flavor. The tree is notably vigorous and productive. Moderate chilling required. Royal Giant Late August ~Generous producing tree~ Very large fruit. This giant has attractive color and excellent flavor with just a hint of acid. Tree is moderately vigorous, but very productive. PEARS Called the butter fruit because of its smooth texture, pears are enjoyed fresh, baked, poached, sautéed, canned or dried. Fowler Nurseries offers an extensive selection of old and new varieties from all over the world. Pears, continued Harrow Delight Mid July ~Fireblight resistant~ Fruit is large, flavorful and sweet. Very similar to Bartlett. This variety is less susceptible to fireblight disease than our other pears. Use Bartlett or Comice as a pollinizer. Super Red Mid July ~Earliest maturing red pear~ Fruit is large, dark red in color with bright white flesh. Flavor is excellent. Summer heat will not fade the red color perfect for hot California areas. Storage life is very short, 4 weeks. Use Bartlett, Harrow Delight, or Comice as a pollinizer or even an Asian pear. This pear can be left on the tree to ripenadd about 2 weeks to harvest timing. Bartlett Mid July to ~Most popular pear grown today~ Picked green, but enjoyed when it ripens to a soft yellow, sometimes with a slight blush. Flesh is very sweet and tender. Excellent fresh or canned. Fruit is large and appealing. Tree bears early, heavily and regularly. This variety is self-fertile. Cinnamon Pear (USPP #10325) ~Unique Flavor~ Frequently a winner at taste testing. Fully russetted with Bartlett shape. Pick about the first of August and refrigerate for 30 to 60 days before ripening on your counter. Not selffertile. Use Bartlett or Harrow Delight as a pollinizer. Harrow Sweet ~Blushing Sweet~ Fruit has a beautiful red blush over yellow skin. Flavor is like Bartlett. Less susceptible to fireblight. For a pollinizer use any variety of Asian pear. Comice Late September ~Considered the King of pears~ Comice is a large, roundish rich fruit. Flesh is fine grained (smooth) with a delectable flavor that melts in your mouth. Skin color is yellow with a slight blush. Best eaten fresh after a short storage period. Tree growth is vigorous with good production. Can be self-fertile, but for consistent production use Super Red as a pollinizer. Please note Harrow Delight and Bartlett can be left on the tree to ripen instead of harvesting, storing and then ripening. Fruit will ripen approximately two weeks after timing shown in descriptions.
