7 ITALY August 10, 2012 Italy Wineries T - Z See date & place of tasting in italics Growers / Wineries are in alphabetical order with area underneath Tabarrini Turrita Montefalco Umbria White Wines Adarmando Trebbiano Spoletino Bianco dell Umbria Tasted in Lilley November 2011 Pine nuts and pineapple both show on the nose with the nuttiness coming through on the palate. The mix of apricot and pineapple gives a fleshy richness with tangerine freshness and hazel nuts showing towards the back. Rosé Wines Bocca di Rosa Sagrantino Rosso dell Umbria Tasted in Lilley November 2011 Tasted in the Jockey Club Rooms Newmarket December 2011 The red cherry and redcurrant that are there on the nose are backed by pine nut spiciness. The palate starts with fruit quite rich sweet strawberry but the firmer cherry stone character comes through towards the back. The finish is very firm and dry and rather bitter. Il Padrone della Vigne Sagrantino Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon Rosso dell Umbria Tasted in Lilley November 2011 Tasted in the Jockey Club Rooms Newmarket December 2011 Red cherry, blackcurrant and black cherry, a wild mix of flavours, give lots of complexity on the nose all quite firm. 8 August 10, 2012 ITALY towards the back there is the freshness of redcurrant and sloe. There are layers of flavour quite rich fruit with dryness showing on the finish. Montefalco Rosso Sagrantino Sangiovese Tasted in Lilley November 2011 Tasted in the Jockey Club Rooms Newmarket December 2011 Bitter sweet black fruits feature on the nose, wild hedgerow flavours slightly herbal. The same mix is there on the palate with bramble and bilberry and redcurrant and Morello cherry all mixed up together. The mid palate is firm with structured but not aggressive tannins and fruit showing behind racy and rustic Colle Alle Macchie Montefalco Sagrantino Tasted in Lilley November 2011 Tasted in the Jockey Club Rooms Newmarket December 2011 Bitter cherry and bramble feature on the nose backed by a herbal mix of flavours. The palate has freshness yet there is an underlying black fruited richness all quite bitter sweet. The tannins although firm are not aggressive and do not hold back the fruit. The back palate is herbal brambly with wild strawberry and bitter cherry raciness. Colle Grimaldesco Montefalco Sagrantino Tasted in Lilley November 2011 Tasted in the Jockey Club Rooms Newmarket December 2011 The nose feels quite rich with wild strawberry and damson plum. Ripe fruit fills out the palate the richness of flavour underpinned by fresher red fruits redcurrant and mulberry. There is some bitter sloe towards the back a slight peppery character yet some fleshy and rich fruit underpinned by bitter almond. Colle Grimaldesco Montefalco Sagrantino Tasted in Lilley November 2011 Tasted in the Jockey Club Rooms Newmarket December 2011 The nose is packed with powerful flavours with the bitter sweetness of the grape very much in evidence. Herbal black fruits are underpinned by red cherry and redcurrant layers of complex flavours. The fruit is rich with some mid sweetness but the racy redcurrant and bramble that underpin give freshness and although tannins feel firm there is black fruited sweetness on the finish. 9 ITALY August 10, 2012 The richness sweetness of the nose comes through on the palate. Lots of fleshy ripe strawberry fills out the palate the richness balanced by redcurrant freshness. It is rich and lush fleshy sweet yet there is enough acidity to balance and bring out the fruit flavours on the finish. Cantina del Taburno Foglianise Campania White Wines Falanghina Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians November 2013 The nose has lots of rich fruit peaches and apricots and although there is depth on the start of the palate the mid palate is lighter and fresher. Tangerine features at the back the fresher fruit giving a slightly lighter feel on the finish. Fidelis Aglianico Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians January 2017 The nose has concentrated black fruits the start of the palate firm. It opens out in the middle a hint of sweetness with ripe blackberry and black cherry at the back. Tasca D Almerita Sclafani Bagni Sicily (Regaleali) Sparkling White Wines Almerita Brut NV 92 Chardonnay 100% Regaleali Estate Tasted at the winery September 2013 The nose is fresh very lime and apple driven and although the start of the palate has the same racy crispness the mid palate is richer more melon in character. 10 August 10, 2012 ITALY Regaleali Estate Tasted at the winery September 2013 The nose is light fresh fruited a touch of citrus. There are richer flavours in the middle some ripe pineapple but towards the back the lime and lemon dominate refreshing the finish. Chardonnay Regaleali Estate Tasted at the winery September 2013 Rich ripe fruit fills out the nose and the palate has depth honeyed with fleshy melon. It feels fresher towards the back slightly leafy and herbal but the finish has all the fleshiness of ripe melon. Nozzo D Oro Inzolia 79% Sauvignon Tasca 21% Tasted at the Grandi Marchi tasting Vintners Hall September 2010 There are hints of maturity on the nose with hazel nut underpinning the fleshy pineapple on the palate. Citrus and apple freshness is there on the back palate balancing the richness. Nozzo D Oro Inzolia 79% Sauvignon Tasca 21% Tasted at the Grandi Marchi tasting Vintners Hall September 2010 It is very rich on the nose lots of sweet ripe fruit very tropical fruit in character. The crisp gooseberry of this special clone of Sauvignon Blanc refreshes the mid palate but the sweetness of the ripe fruit gives a fleshy feel to the finish. Nozze d Oro Contea di Sclafani Insolia Sauvignon Tasca Regaleali Estate Tasted at the winery September 2013 Minerals flint and gooseberry all refresh the nose and give a crisp start to the palate. There is mid sweetness and richness fleshy pineapple and grapefruit but towards the back citrus dominates leaving the finish with a racy freshness. Cygnus Nero d Avola 60% Merlot 40% Regaleali Estate Tasted at the winery September 2013 The nose is rich the palate fleshy and sweet with lots of black plum and chocolate. Bramble refreshes the mid palate bringing out a hint of mint some eucalyptus but towards the back the sweetness of the fruit enriches filling out the finish. Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 10

11 ITALY August 10, 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Regaleali Estate Tasted at the winery September 2013 The nose is fresh lots of mint eucalyptus and the start of the palate is quite light fresh fruited with bramble and bilberry. It fills out in the middle deep brooding flavours backed by supple tannins. There are fresher fruits at the back slightly herbaceous on the finish. Rosso del Conte Tasted at Belloni October 1992 Sweet ripe fruit the nose has depth and the palate a fleshy suppleness. Behind the sweet black fruits there is freshness but the fruit is lush the back palate fleshy and the finish sweet and rich. Rosso del Conte Nero d Avola 85% others Tasted at the Grandi Marchi tasting Vintners Hall September 2010 The ripeness of the fruit gives the nose a rich power. Concentrated flavours show on the palate very black cherry and blackberry in influence. The ripeness of the fruit fills out the palate the powerful concentrated black fruits lightened and balanced by some red. The finish is lush and sensuously rich Rosso del Conte Nero d Avola 85% others Tasted at the Grandi Marchi tasting Vintners Hall September 2010 There is a lot of ripe fruit on the nose and the sweetness of the black fruit gives richness on the palate. Black cherry appears to dominate with behind is black plum layers of fruit that give complexity their sweetness giving a richness on the finish. Rosso del Conte Nero d Avola Perricone + others Regaleali Estate Tasted at the winery September 2013 The nose is fresh red fruit dominated but the palate is rich with brooding depth lots of cassis, black cherry, liquorice and chocolate. Ripe tannins add to the fleshy sweetness the suppleness yet under all of the richness the ripe fruit there is freshness giving a slightly lighter feel to the finish. 12 August 10, 2012 ITALY Bramble and black cherry refresh the nose and the start of the palate is slightly herbal with a mix of black fruits. The fruit feels ripe the mid palate fleshy with supple tannins the rich mix of flavours the depth balanced by bilberry freshness towards the back. Sweet White Wines Malvasia delle Lipari Capofaro Estate Eolian Island of Salina Tasted at the winery September 2013 The nose has a mix of flavours ripe apricots, caramelised orange peel, oriental spices with the sweetness the fleshy richness underpinned by hints of citrus. The layers of flavour give complexity the mid freshness giving a lighter feel towards the back yet the finish is packed with fleshy peach, apricot and candied peel. Terra Firma Sicily Nero d Avola Tasted at the Definitive Italian tasting June 2013 The nose is sweet with lots of ripe fruit and the palate has a fleshy black fruited richness. Black plum and blackcurrant are backed by dark chocolate sumptuous yet the sweetness is balanced by fresher flavours at the back giving a lighter finish. Azienda Terre di Ger Treviso White Wines Pinot Grigio Tasted on Board Sea Cloud August 2014 Floral white flowered the nose has mineral freshness and the start of the palate is lean and citrusy. There is mid sweetness richer flavours but the citrus comes through and dominates refreshing the back palate. Tenuta del Terre Nere Etna Sicily White Wines Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 12

13 ITALY August 10, 2012 Etna Bianco Carricante Cataratto Grecanico Inzolia Tasted at the J & B tasting Vintners Hall September 2012 The nose is citrus driven with lots of minerals at the back. Grapefruit and lime refresh the start of the palate but under the freshness there are some richer flavours a touch of greengage. The finish is long racy mineral and citrus fresh. Etna Bianco Tasted at the J & B tasting Caledonian Club July 2016 Floral and fresh the nose is bright the palate lean and mineral. There is mid richness grapefruit and apple with the fresh fruits the citrus giving a lightness and freshness on the finish. Etna Bianco Le Vigtne Niche Carricante Tasted at the J & B tasting Vintners Hall September 2012 Fleshy white peach and greengage gives richness on nose and the palate starts quite sweet. The grapefruit on the mid palate gives freshness with the sweeter flavours giving a richer feel on the finish. Rosé Wines Etna Rosato Tasted at the J & B tasting Vintners Hall September 2012 Nerello The nose has an attractive rose petal fragrance and the palate is very red cherry in character. Towards the back minerals and red fruits give a lovely freshness on the finish. Etna Rosso Nerello Tasted at the J & B tasting Vintners Hall September 2012 The nose is a bit tight with more red fruits than black in evidence. The start of the palate tends to be dominated by the tannins but there is sweetness behind with a riper feel to the finish. Etna Rosso Tasted at the J & B tasting Caledonian Club July 2016 The nose is firm and fresh the palate starts with red cherry bright but quite tight. 14 August 10, 2012 ITALY Etna Rosso Guardiola Nerello Mascalese Tasted at the J & B tasting Vintners Hall September 2012 Red and black fruits give lots of interest on the nose and this mix the layers of flavour gives complexity on the palate. The tannins are there but feel ripe not over dominating or holding back the fruit. The finish is full of rich flavours. Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana Nerello Mascalese Nerello Cappuccio Tasted at the J & B tasting Vintners Hall September 2012 Red cherry features strongly on the nose the freshness backed by slightly richer black fruits. The palate has lots of complexity layers of flavours the red fruited freshness balanced by the sweeter richer more profound black. Etna Rosso Calderera Sottana Tasted at the J & B tasting Caledonian Club July 2016 Fresh red fruit the nose is bright the start of the palate has bitter red cherry excitement. Rich fruit in the middle more black fruit in character the richness and sweetness gives depth on the back palate and finish. Etna Rosso Feudi di Mezzo Nerello Mascalese Nerello Cappuccio Tasted at the J & B tasting Vintners Hall September 2012 The nose is ripe with some nice sweet flavours but the palate is fresher slightly lean the tannins very much in evidence. There is a slight lack of intensity and character and it finishes quite short. Etna Rosso Feudi di Mezzo Nerello Mascalese Nerello Cappuccio Tasted at the J & B tasting Vintners Hall September 2012 The nose is rich and deep fruited with lots of black cherry and although the palate starts in the same way powerful flavours rich and deep there is enough red cherry and mulberry to balance and give a lighter feel to the finish. Etna Rosso Feudi di Mezzo Tasted at the J & B tasting Caledonian Club July 2016 The nose is still tight quite closed but the palate has depth of fruit a rich mix of black fruits. The mid palate has a powerful mix of black fruits but there is enough bitter red cherry to balance and add complexity. 15 ITALY August 10, 2012 The nose is deep rich fruited serious and the palate has the same depth of flavour. The mid palate has great balance with all the powerful flavours underpinned by freshness a lovely complexity with hints of minerals and herbs. Terre Di Sava Sava Puglia Ampelo Luccarelli Primitivo di Manduria Tasted in Clophill June 2012 The nose is fleshy sweet fruited with lots of bramble and black cherry. Rich fruit fills out the palate warm and velvety the fruit backed by rich chocolate and coffee the complexity added to by the hints of vanilla on the finish. Terruzzi y Puthod San Gimignano Tuscany White Wines Vernaccia di San Gimignano Tasted at the Carlton Club February 2013 The nose has a salty crispness with lots of lime and lemon. The palate starts quite light fills out in the middle and towards the back the freshness takes over and gives crispness on the finish. Rondolino Vernaccia di San Gimignano Tasted at Celtic Haven Pembrokeshire August 2016 Fresh, fruity the nose has a mix of flavours the start of the palate citrusy, bight and fresh lime and lemon. The mid palate has more of a grapefruit character the finish lean, long directional with a hint of almonds. 16 August 10, 2012 ITALY Istrian Malvasia Vermentino Tasted on Board Sea Cloud August 2014 Delicate on the nose discreet perfumed spiciness the mid palate richer with apricot and white peach the richer flavours refreshed by the citrus at the back. The finish has a mix of oriental spices. Tiberio Abruzzo White Wines Trebbiano Tasted at the Armit Italian Tasting March 2016 Lime freshness on the nose the palate has a mix of citrus fruits. Slightly richer in the middle more of a grapefruit character with a strong citrus mineral finish. Pecorino Tasted at the Armit Italian Tasting March 2016 Depth of fruit on the nose the start of the palate has white peach and greengage a hint of apricot. The fruit at the back is fresh the layers of flavour give interest and complexity the fruit lingering on the finish. Pecorino Tasted at the Armit London tasting March 2017 The nose has lime freshness the start of the palate light fragrant but lacking a bit of depth. Richer at the back some tropical fruit and apricot but it finishes with mineral freshness. Fonte Canale Trebbiano 100% Lime, lemon grapefruit the nose is fresh the start of the palate bright. Hints of tropical fruits in the middle there is depth of fruit but citrus and mineral are there at the back the finish crisp with good length. Tocco Vini Abruzzo Montepulciano d Abruzzo Tasted in the Carlton Club May 2017 The nose has rich black fruits so typical of the grape the palate has depth with dark chocolate, liquorice and candied cherry all underpinned by redcurrant freshness. Sweet at the back the fruit is ripe the finish generous and supple. Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 16

17 ITALY August 10, 2012 Tommasi Pedemonte di Valpolicella Valpolicella Veneto White Wines Giulietta Bianco delle Vevezia Pinot Grigio Chardonnay Garganega Tasting in London March 2012 There is a mix of floral scents on the nose spring flowers backed by a herbal character. The palate is quite light with lots of citrus that brings out the floral nature of the finish. Le Volpare Soave Classico Garganega 100% Tasting in London March 2012 The nose is very fresh lots of citrus fruits and although there is more depth and sweetness on the mid palate the finish is very light but refreshingly crisp. Le Fornaci Lugana Trebbiano di Lugana 100% Tasting in London March 2012 There is some lovely rich fruit on the nose and a nice weight of flavour on the start of the palate. The mid palate is lighter apple and lime fresh but there is sweeter fruit coming through and giving a richer feel on the finish Rosé Wines Chiaretto Bardolino Corvina Veronese 60% Rondinella 30% Dindarella 10% Tasting in London March 2012 The nose has a mix of flavours wild strawberry backed by bilberry all quite fresh. The palate has a touch of pear drops richer in the middle with bramble and red cherry. There is an attractive freshness on the finish. Romeo Rosso delle Venezie Corvina Rondinella Merlot & other local varieties Tasting in London March 2012 The mix of black and red fruits on the nose is fresh but quite light. 18 August 10, 2012 ITALY Rafael Valpolicella Classico Superiore Corvina Veronese 60% Rondinella 25% Molinara 15% Tasting in London March 2012 The nose has a nice depth of fruit all quite ripe and sweet. Wild strawberry and red cherry give complexity on the palate quite fat and full the ripeness nicely balanced by the fresher flavours that come through towards the back. Arele parziale apassimento Rosso Corvina Rondinella Oseleta Merlot Tasting in London March 2012 The nose has a fleshy sweetness with lots of ripe strawberries yet the palate has the firmness of black cherry. There is a mix of flavours a slight bitter sweet character sweet and ripe fruited towards the back yet fresh on the finish. Ripasso Valpolicella Classico Corvina Veronese 70% Rondinella 25% Corvinone 5% Tasting in London March 2012 Bitter cherry is backed by sweet strawberry with both nose and palate having a bitter sweet character. There is a mix of flavours on the palate firm cherry stone fresh redcurrant then some sweeter black fruits. There is power and depth of flavour on the back palate. Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Corvina Veronese 60% Rondinella 30% Molinara 10% Tasting in London March 2012 Richness of fruit and powerful black cherry fills out the nose and gives depth on the palate. The layers of flavour the mix of ripe black fruits and fresher red give complexity. There is still a feeling of youth with more fruit to show. Ca Flolrian Amarone d. Valpolicella Classico Corvina Veronese 70% Rondinella 25% Corvinone 5% Tasting in London March 2012 Ripe rich fruit packs out the nose with black cherry to the fore. The palate is bitter sweet black and red fruits intermingling there is real concentration of flavour fleshy depth sweetness yet underlying freshness lovely and complex. Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Tasting in London March 2012 The mix of bitter sweet fruits is backed by hazel nuts. The palate has lots of ripe flavours a mix of red fruits with behind fleshy sweetness. The layers of fruit give complexity and the nuttiness on the back palate interest. 19 ITALY August 10, 2012 Fiorato Recioto della Valpolicella Classico Corvina Veronese 65% Rondinella 30% Molinara 5% Tasting in London March 2012 There is a mass of sweet fruit on the nose red fruits backed by black fruits. Ripe flavours flesh out the mid palate the fruit richness and sweetness backed by fresh red fruits lots of raspberries. The back palate is all strawberry jam rich sweet sticky and fleshy. Villa Tonino Marsala Sicily Nero d Avola Tasted at the Carlton Club July 2011 The nose has a powerful mix of black fruits with black cherry tending to dominate. The palate starts with rich ripe flavours but underpinning is fresher bramble and then towards the back the freshness of redcurrants spiced up by some black pepper. Nero d Avola Tasted at the Liberty Wines tasting January 2012 The nose is chocolate rich filled out with a mix of black fruits. The fruit on the palate is ripe the richness sweetness helped by rounded tannins. There is enough freshness to lighten a little but the finish is plush with just a hint of spice. Azienda La Torricella Monforte d Alba Piemonte Barolo Tasted at the Carlton Club November 2014 Although the nose has depth of flavour richness the fruit is overlaid by rose petal fragrances. The palate is sweet the fruit rich the mid palate supple a powerful mix with black fruits tending to dominate. It is lighter at the back fragrant flavours that linger on the long finish. 20 August 10, 2012 ITALY Black cherry some red cherry there is a lot happening on the nose aromatic and spicy. The palate has a brooding richness powerful flavours the tannins feel ripe structured but not aggressive supple and fleshy in the middle. Sweet on the back palate but the finish is still firm leathery spicy with cloves and mint flavours that linger. Tenuta Trerose Montepulciano Tuscany Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Simposio Tasted at Belloni October 1992 The nose has depth the palate a lot of powerful black fruits. The start is firm but the mid palate has richness and depth and the fruit at the back feels ripe the finish has good depth of flavour. Trevisiol L e Figli Valdobbiadene Veneto Sparkling Wines Prosecco di Valdobbiadene NV 92 Glera 100% Tasted at the Carlton Club February 2015 The nose is light fragrant and fresh with a mix of citrus fruits. The mid palate is richer with white peach and just a hint of apricot the back palate fresh and fragrant then just a hint of richer fruit on the finish. All this makes for an enjoyable, uncomplicated easy drinking glass of sparkling wine. Tenuta di Trinoro Sarteano Siena Tuscany Le Cupole di Trinoro Tasted at Corney & Barrow tasting October 2013 The fruit feels ripe the nose quite rich with a mix of red fruits on the palate. The mid palate has depth and richness but towards the back the dominant red fruits give a lighter fresher less concentrated feel. Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 20

21 ITALY August 10, 2012 Palazzi Tasted at Corney & Barrow tasting October 2013 Black and red fruits intermingle on the nose and give interest on the start of the palate. Cantina Valdadige Veneto White Wines Pinot Grigio Tasted at Lincoln s Inn October 2012 There is some white peach on the nose quite ripe and sweet backed by fresher mineral and apple. The mid palate has a mix of flavours some ripe fruit enriching but the smoky mineral shale gives freshness to the finish. Pinot Grigio Vallagarina Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians February 2014 Slate and mineral refresh the nose orange peel and tropical fruits give more depth on the palate. There is a nice mix of flavours with hints of sweetness yet freshness and lots of slate and citrus on the finish. Fattoria La Valentina Abruzzo Montepulciano d Abruzzo Tasted in the Carlton Club March 2014 Brambles hedgerow fruits both nose and palate have a mix of fresh fruits and sweeter richer mainly black fruits. A touch of tropical fruit gives a little more depth on the mid palate but the flinty mineral the citrus is there at the back giving a lean racy feel on the long finish. Frappato Tasted in Sicily September 2013 Ripe strawberry gives richness on the nose and fleshiness on the palate. The tannins are ripe the mid palate supple with lots of rich red fruits. Towards the back there is enough freshness to balance and give a slightly lighter feel on the finish. Vallis Mareni Premaor Di Miane Veneto Sparkling Wines Ombra Prosecco 90 Frizzante with twine binding Tasted in Lilley August 2010 The nose has lemon freshness with slightly sweeter melon and white peach at the back. The palate starts quite fresh with a light sparkle the mid palate is sweeter with more of a pineapple character. There is some lovely fresh grapefruit on the back palate long lingering fruit. Ombra Prosecco Extra Dry 91 Spumante Tasted in Lilley August 2010 The nose has some very fresh fruit grapefruit and lime but behind there are fuller flavours more pineapple in character. It is dry on the palate very fresh fruit but there is some mid sweetness that helps to balance the crispness. The lime grapefruits flavours last well on the back palate. 28 August 10, 2012 ITALY The nose has some rich fruit overlaid with summer flower fragrances. The sweetness on the start of the palate is balanced by freshness ensuring lots of length. Ombra Prosecco Brut 90 Spumante Tasted in Lilley August 2010 There is a broader slightly sweeter feel on the nose slightly less defined. Pineapple and grapefruit are very much in evidence on the palate a fuller richer feel. The sweetness is well balanced by citrus freshness and the finish is quite full easy but there is enough freshness to lengthen the flavours. Prosecco Superiore Tre Comuni Extra Dry 89 Tasted in Lilley August 2010 The fruit on the nose is very crisp with grapefruit mixed in with tropical fruits and apple. There is some nice fruit on the mid palate but the crispness tends to overtake the fruit giving a crisp slightly dry feel towards the back. The flavours though do linger. Val di Toro Grosseto Maremma Tuscany This newly planted property has started well winning a Bronze medal in the International Wine Challenge. The site, some 90 metres above sea level is ideal for the vine, the sandstone soil being mineral rich. Husband and wife team Anne Maria Cruciate and Hugh Constable Maxwell believe that the future holds lots of promise. Reds - Sangiovese 90% / Montepulciano 10% Val di Toro 2006 Sangiovese 90% Montepulciano 10% Tasted in Lilley September The nose is packed with black and red cherry and this mix of flavours is there on the palate ensuring complexity. Backing the cherry is some dark chocolate, the Montepulciano asserting its influence over the Sangiovese. The tannins are still quite firm, the vine youth in evidence. Sweeter, richer, lush fruit comes through towards the finish, the crunchy cherry spiced up by some hints of oak. Tasted at Clare College Cambridge November The nose is packed with black and red cherry and this mix of flavours is there on the palate ensuring complexity. Backing the cherry is some dark chocolate and coffee, the Montepulciano asserting its influence over the Sangiovese. The tannins are a bit grippy, the vine youth in Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 28

29 ITALY August 10, 2012 evidence, but as they feel ripe they are not over assertive. Sweeter, richer, lush fruit comes through towards the finish, the crunchy cherry spiced up by some hints of oak. Tasted in Lilley April The richness of the nose is matched by the weight of fruit on the palate. Chocolate power at the start, brighter red cherry comes through giving a fresh twist to the finish. Reviresco Tasted in Lilley April 2009 It has a red fruited charm but lacks some depth and sweetness. The freshness of raspberry is though fleshed out on the finish by richer wild strawberry. Tenuta di Valgiano Valgiano Colline Lucchesi Tuscany The vineyards stand on a terrace of pebbles and clayey albarese rocks some 250 metres above sea level. This is a property that is managed under organic and biodynamic principles. Reds Sangiovese, Syrah & Merlot Whites Vermentino, Trebbiano & Malvasia Tenuta di Valgiano Sangiovese Merlot Syrah Tasted at Clare College Cambridge November 2008 The brightness of red cherry gives lots of fragrance on the nose and freshness on the palate. There is more weight on the mid palate some plum coming through adding flesh. It is still quite firm on the finish. Villa Vallemaggiore Maremma Tuscany White Wines Vermentino Tasted at the Ellis of Richmond tasting Vintners Hall February 2013 The nose has a floral mix with lots of spring flowers and the palate starts light and fresh. Sweeter black fruits give some richness in the middle but the fresher flavours show at the back giving a lighter feel on the finish. Sangiovese Cabernet Colle Alto Tasted at the Ellis of Richmond tasting Vintners Hall February 2013 The nose is very tight and the start of the palate closed. Cassis and black cherry dominate the layers of fruit giving some complexity and although there is fruit sweetness towards the back the firmness of the tannins tends to hold back the fruit on the finish. Cabernet Sangiovese Petit Verdot Poggio Re Tasted at the Ellis of Richmond tasting Vintners Hall February 2013 The nose is more open with some ripe cassis and black cherry and the palate starts with sweet flavours. There is richness in the middle mainly black fruit in character and then towards the back the slightly herbal bilberry refreshes and gives a lighter feel on the finish. Velenosi Marche Roggio del Filare Rosso Piceno Montepulciano Sangiovese Tasted on Board Sea Cloud August 2014 The nose is firm lots of red and black cherry the mid palate very fleshy with dark chocolate. The flavours are not quite together a slight lack of harmony with the sweet fruit on the mid palate held back by tannic firmness on the finish. Vesevo Avellino Campania White Wines Greco di Tufo Tasted at the Carlton Club July 2011 The minerals from the volcanic soils show through on both nose and palate with behind the mineral raciness some lovely white peach flavours. Fiano di Avellino Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians November 2013 The nose is light floral and fragrant and the start of the palate is fresh with some citrus and flint. There are sweeter flavours in the middle but again quite light with fresh fruit showing on the finish. Beneventano Falanghina Tasted at Lincoln s Inn March 2013 Aromatic honeysuckle overlays the ripe fruits on the nose with the sweetness give richness on the start of the palate. There are layers of fruit a mix of flavour ripe honeydew melon and fresher lime and lemon with the freshness bringing out fragrances on the long finish. Beneventano Falaghina Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians June 2016 The nose has a summer flower bed of fragrances white flowers honeysuckle. The start of the palate light fresh but there is mid sweetness ripe melon and greengage. Fresh at the back lime and lemon the fragrances linger on the finish. Vetriano Venezie & Puglia White Wines Pinot Grigio Garganega Tasted in Lilley July 2012 The mix of fruits on the nose is backed by herbal leafiness lovely and fresh. Slightly sweeter tropical fruits show on the mid palate but the overall feel is one of freshness lime, slate and mineral with just a hint of spice. Garganega Pinot Grigio delle Venzie Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians February 2014 Rich on the nose greengage and tropical fruits give lots of interest. There is a richer feel in the middle more of a tangerine character with the lime lemon mix refreshing the finish. Castello Vicchiomaggio Chianti Classico Tuscany Ripa delle Mandorle Sangiovese 75% Canaiolo 25% Tasted at the Ellis of Richmond tasting Vintners Hall February 2013 The fruit feels ripe the nose and the start of the palate sweet but in the middle it is fresher with more redcurrant and raspberry. Towards the back there is more sweet fruit and this gives slightly more weight on the finish. Ripa delle Mandorie Sangiovese 75% Cabernet Sauvignon 25% Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians March 2016 The nose has a mix of red and black fruits the start of the palate sweet but it is firmer and fresher in the middle. Firm tannins at the back tend to hold back the fruit and shorten the finish. Chianti Classico La Lellera Sangiovese Canaiolo Tasted at the Ellis of Richmond tasting Vintners Hall February 2013 Red fruits give freshness whilst the black fruits on the palate a sweeter richer feel. The tannins feel ripe the mid palate quite supple a mix of bramble and wild strawberry but towards the back it dries a bit leaving the finish slightly short. The mid richness is balanced by fresh red fruits at the back the finish though ripe, rich and sweet fruited. Ripa Delle More Sangiovese 50% Cabernet Sauvignon 30% Merlot 20% Tasted at the Ellis of Richmond tasting Vintners Hall February 2013 The nose has the richness of black plum and although there is lots of sweet fruit on the palate there is an underlying freshness. It fills out towards the back cassis and black cherry refreshed by bramble and a touch of bilberry. The tannins show through on the finish but there is a good weight of fruit behind the firmness.
