Malloy As we move closer to the completion of our multimillion dollar renovation, it is time to take a moment and look back at some of our recent accomplishments. Fairview s extraordinary staff has succeeded in truly making a difference in the lives of the individuals we serve. They have developed and/or enhanced IV therapy services, wound care services, in-patient Hospice programs, physical rehabilitation services and sub acute services. In addition, staff has become vested in improving the quality of life of our residents through permanent assignments. Studies have shown that residents and staff are more satisfied when assignments have permanency. Families and residents have expressed great satisfaction with our Bistro, the new resident telephone system, free cable television, the superior State survey reports and the wonderful aesthetic improvements to resident rooms and common areas. I would like to thank all of our staff, residents, volunteers, family members and corporate and individual friends who have made Fairview the facility of choice in Southeastern Connecticut. Together we are making a difference!!!!! OLIVE SISTARE CELEBRATES 100 YEARS! Fairview resident Olive Sistare was treated to a special party on the occasion of her 100th Birthday on July 26. 2 Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page AUCTION The fourth annual Antiques and Collectibles Auction and Dessert Extravaganza was held on Saturday, November 4 in Fairview s Broomfield Wilson Auditorium. Over 110 guests enjoyed the delectable desserts served throughout the evening and viewing the wonderful items that were donated to Fairview for the auction. There were 76 live auction and 41 silent auction items up for grabs. Antique furniture, jewelry, paintings, use of a condo, a sailboat, spa treatments and gift certificates to various restaurants were among the items featured this year. Thanks to the generosity of our guests, over $9,000 was raised from the auction itself. Sponsorships in our program book resulted in a record breaking $52,000 in pledges making the total net profit for the auction slightly more than $57,000. This is a 12% increase over last year s record setting total. All proceeds will help to defray the cost of new furniture in our residents rooms. Thank you to all of our very generous sponsors and guests for supporting the auction in such a generous fashion. We would not be able to provide the highest quality of care that we do for our residents without your help and continued support. Auctioneer Daniel Buck Soules uses his knowledge, wit and charm to nudge guests into bidding on items in order to raise more funds for Fairview. Guests watching intently as auctioneer David Buck Soules works his magic during the live auction. Warren Smith, Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of Connecticut I.O.O.F. and a director of the home presented a $50,000 check to Fairview Administrator James K. Malloy prior to the start of the annual auction that was held on November 4 at Fairview. This very generous donation will be used to help fund various projects at Fairview including a new Hospice Room and an electronic medical records initiative. Pictured helping to present the check to Jim Malloy are (L-R): Marshall Kalin, a director of the home, Art Burkard, Tom Ward, a director of the home, Warren Smith, Jim Malloy, and Dick Campbell, president of Fairview s Board. Auctioneer Daniel Buck Soules with Fairveiw administrator James K. Malloy prior to the start of the auction. 7 Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page 7 A FUND-RAISING MESSAGE During the period of July 1 through November10, 2006, two hundred and twenty-four donors contributed a total of $ * to Fairview s fundraising programs. This includes a $50,000 gift made by the Grand Lodge of Connecticut I.O.O.F. This is a record-setting total for both donors and dollars for this time frame. Thank you so much to all of our donors for your extreme generosity. *Deducting $32,850 in expenses from Fairview s car raffle makes the net total $84,528. YEAR-END GIVING DON T MISS OUT!! As we approach the end of the calendar year I want to remind you that time is running out on making a tax deductible gift to Fairview for this 2006 tax year. There are many ways in which to make a contribution... A gift of cash to our annual fund would certainly help us to reach our 2006 goal of $10,000. All funds collected for the annual fund will help pay for furnishings in the new bistro. The bistro is now open 7 days a week from 11:00am to 7:00pm and has been very well received by our residents and their families. To date we have collected just over $4,000. Donating appreciated stock is a very easy way to save on your tax bill and at the same time have a major impact on the fundraising efforts at Fairview. You can transfer ownership to Fairview and pay no capital gain on the profit realized on the stock. You will also receive a tax deduction for the full value of the stock in the year it is sold. Taxable Annuities a donor can transfer ownership of an annuity to Fairview and eliminate the capital gains on the profit realized and take a tax deduction in the year it is sold. A bequest is a gift named in a person s will. Will s are necessary to carry out a person s final wishes regarding the distribution of their property to those they wish to benefit, including a charitable organization like Fairview. Charitable Remainder Trust a donor takes a one-time charitable deduction in the year the trust is formed. The donor then receives income from the trust for life. Upon the donor s death, the assets of the trust are distributed to the donor s designated charity such as Fairview. If you would like to make a gift, a donor envelope is enclosed for your convenience. If you have specific questions about any of the methods of making a gift listed above please contact David Brown, Director of Development at or at brownd@oddfellowsct.com. The bench pictured above was donated in memory of Rhea MacNeil, a Fairview resident for many years, by her daughters and their families. The bench is located in the new courtyard between the existing facility and the new wing. Daughters Nancy Hall, Sally Bell, Neila Walsh and Marcia Chatfield wanted to leave a lasting memory of their mother in appreciation for the loving care she received while a resident at Fairview.

8 Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page 8 Friends Learning Together Friends Learning Together Fairview Child Development Center received a grant to continue the Connecticut Storytelling Center s Littlest Listeners program for preschool children ages 3-5 during the 2007 year. The grant, awarded by the Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism and supported by Fairview s Parent Committee, has been an excellent addition to the preschool curriculum and the intergenerational program. The program is designed to develop and support emergent literacy and is based upon the benchmarks for school readiness prepared by the State. Story times are led by talented professional storytellers, many of whom are designated Master Teaching Artists by the Connecticut Commission on the Arts. It s never too early to start reading to children. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends reading aloud daily to children starting as early as 6 months. Over time, reading helps build a child s vocabulary, stimulates their imagination, and improves their communication skills. In fact, the more a child is spoken to from the beginning, the better it is for their growth and development. For more information about the program, please contact Rebecca Cruelles, Director at RECREATION TIDBITS HARVEST DINNER On October 3 rd, our annual Harvest Dinner was held in the auditorium. Over 50 residents were treated to a delicious lunchtime meal provided by Fairview s Dietary Department. Dean Anderson, Secretary of the home s Board of Directors, played the piano with our residents joining in for a wonderful sing along. Thank you to Dean for taking the time to provide terrific entertainment! A GOOD OLD FASHIONED HOE-DOWN Fairview held its first ever hoe-down on September 7. Eva Devine and Dick Drake entertained our residents with good old country music. (continued on next column) RECREATION TIDBITS The dietary staff barbecued ribs and hamburgers and served other delicious side dishes including corn bread, muffins and homemade baked beans. It was a festive get together for the residents and their families who all had a grand time. The room was decorated with corn stalks and hay bales. Tables had old fashioned mason jars with daisies and mums which provided a real country western décor. Sarah Stanley, volunteer coordinator, had a wonderful group of her volunteers helping throughout the evening. Thank you to everyone who participated for all of your hard work. TUX COMES TO VISIT FAIRVIEW Peter Morneault and his wife Cathy, from The Problem Pooch in Ledyard, paid a visit to Fairview Odd Fellows Home of Connecticut, located in Groton on September 25. They provided 40 Fairview residents with a one-hour demonstration on how they help people train their dogs. Pictured with Peter and his beautiful Samoyed, Tux are Fairview residents Dick Woodworth and Rowena Dimartino. NANCY MILLER CELEBRATES HER 86TH BIRTHDAY (L-R) Jeff and Susie Miller celebrate their mother Nancy s 86th Birthday along with Susie s husband Steve in the Bistro at Fairview.

9 Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page 9 RECREATION TIDBITS OUR FIRST FAMILY DINNER A SUCCESS A GENEROUS DONATION TO SPONSOR A NEW RESIDENT S ROOM The Recreation Department had its first successful family dinner on October 25th. The Dietary Department prepared a scrumptious meal of cheese ravioli with pink sauce, garlic bread, salad and cheese cake for dessert. Blair Quasnitchka, assistant administrator, played wonderful background music. We have another family dinner scheduled for November 15th. If you have not been invited to a family dinner please don t worry as this is an on-going project. We assure you that everyone will receive an invitation to a dinner. Pictured above are (L-R) Elsie and Reid Phillips and their daughter Nancy Lauman. James O Boyle, owner and Director of the Mystic Funeral Home recently made a very generous $5,000 pledge to Fairview to sponsor one of the residents rooms in the new wing. Jim is a longtime member of Stonington Odd Fellows Lodge #26. He has requested that the room be dedicated in honor of the Stonington Lodge. Give Thanks! Fairview Safety Program In an effort to promote a safe working environment for our employees and consistent safe work practices for our residents, Fairview has launched a new employee focused Safety Program. On a weekly basis a Safety Champion is nominated. A Safety Champion is a staff member who is observed practicing safe work habits or accident prevention. We have had four winners so far, and they have received Bistro lunch coupons for their efforts. Lisa Arnold, CAN, noted that the floors in the new shower rooms were slippery when wet and suggested non-skid strips. Maintenance promptly applied them and a potential accident was prevented. Gladys Smith, CAN, shared her experience in transferring a resident with other staff members ensuring both their safety and the resident s. Maintenance workers Mark Hill and John Dahl did some extra safety checks during routine scheduled maintenance on patient equipment and prevented a potential problem that would prevent use. We are playing Safety Bingo with the first pay out in the amount of $25. The bingo continues as long as there are no staff injuries. All staff are participating and increasing their safety consciousness. The Joint Commission s (JCAHO) 2007 Long Term Care National Patient Safety Goals include encouraging residents and their families involvement in safety. We welcome any suggestions related to safety. Please share any concerns with staff immediately or place suggestions for safety strategies in the mailbox that will be located at the front desk. Deb Morgan, RN Staff Development/In-Service Coordinator
