Some highlights of that news are as follows: we continue to maintain a five-star quality rating; the implementation of our electronic medical record system is going extremely well; the Fairview Medal dinner honoring Leah Genido and Vincent Barbieri was a tremendous success; ticket sales for our car raffle are good; employee appreciation week was celebrated during the first week of May; employee morale is high; and we are keeping our heads above water during these tough economic times. With all this good news, I m profoundly concerned about the future of long-term care services in Connecticut. The Governor and our legislature are contemplating cutting nursing home rates over the next two years. With only a 1% increase for state aided patients during the past three years, and the number of nursing homes in receivership or bankruptcy, any decrease at this juncture would be catastrophic for the elderly who reside in Connecticut's nursing homes. Please contact your legislators and the governor's office and impress on them the necessity of providing adequate reimbursement to care for the residents of nursing homes in our state. If you, as supporters of Fairview, don't speak up for the frailest among us, who will? James K. The fourth annual Fairview car raffle will be held on Saturday, July 11. Last year we only sold 514 tickets so the odds of winning are excellent. This year s vehicle is a 2010 Honda Insight Hybrid loaded with all the bells and whistles including a navigation system. Proceeds will be used to help pay for the implementation of a state-of-the-art electronic medical records system at Fairview. As an added incentive to buy a ticket and support Fairview, all ticket holders will be provided a parking pass (upon request) to drive their vehicle onto the Fairview property to watch the fantastic Mashantucket Pequot fireworks display that will take place soon after the drawing of the winning ticket. 2 Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page 2 FUNDRAISING REPORT During these challenging economic times Fairview has been blessed with tremendous financial support. While some non-profits have seen a decline in their fundraising we have not. Just the opposite. Fairview is experiencing its best-ever annual fund appeal. The drive started in March and to date we have 80 donations for a total of $10, This is a 45% increase in dollars from the same time period last year. We will be receiving a $3, matching gift from the Connecticut Odd Fellows Grand Lodge that will bring us very close to our goal for the year of $16, The fund drive closes on December 31, We are very grateful to everyone who has made a donation to the annual fund. It is very humbling to know that so many people care about the financial well-being of Fairview. It is through your support that we are able to expand the choices we can provide to our residents to enhance their daily lives. Other recent gifts include a $1, grant from the Chelsea Groton Bank Foundation to help pay for a new piece of equipment for our therapy gym and a $ grant from the Dime Bank Foundation to continue expanding our intergenerational program. The fourth annual car raffle is well underway. A promotional flyer is enclosed in this issue. Our goal is $25, with all proceeds used to help pay for our ongoing computer upgrades. A complete listing of ticket purchasers will be in the fall issue of the Point O View There are many other ways to contribute to Fairview including: Endowment Child Development Center Residents Fund Memorial/Honorary Gifts Estate Planning/Planned Giving Leaving Your Legacy! 3 Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page 3 FAIRVIEW MEDAL DINNER HELD ON MAY 9 The two award recipients with Fairview Administrator, James Malloy The second annual Fairview Medal Diner was held on Saturday, May 9 in the Broomfield-Wilson Auditorium at Fairview. This year s winners were Leah Genido, Supervisor in the Dietary Department, and Vincent Barbieri, a long-time volunteer, board member, and benefactor. The Fairview Medal is presented to two people who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to Fairview over an extended period of time. These men and women have risen above their peers by providing invaluable assistance to Fairview, whether through personal effort, selfless gifts of time, financial aid, or other behind-thescenes involvement. Without such people, Fairview could not maintain both its high level of excellence and its non-profit status. Both recipients have displayed service and dedication to Fairview that far exceeds what one would expect of any person. According to Jim Malloy, Administrator, their selfless spirit of giving has had a tremendous impact on the lives of our residents through their countless hours of volunteer work and through their benevolence. Malloy goes on to say, we are very fortunate to have people like Leah and Vinny who have given of themselves so unselfishly in order to further the mission of Fairview. Leah Genido, one of Fairview s most diligent employees, began her career 20 years ago as a dietary aide. Through unparalleled hard work and dedication, she worked her way up the career ladder and became Director of the Dietary Department in High standards, teamwork, and her willingness to do whatever is needed to get the job done has been her credo. Residents, families, managers, co-workers, guests, and our Board of Directors all recognize that Leah belongs to that distinguished group of generous and devoted individuals who constantly strive to preserve Fairview s 116-year reputation for excellence. Vincent Barbieri became a member of the Odd Fellows organization in Waterbury, CT in He rose through the lodge chairs and served as Noble Grand of Nosahogan Lodge #21 from He has also served as Grand Master. He is the Trustee of the Blondel Estate which provides hearing, eye, and dental supplies for residents. He was instrumental in Fairview procuring a portable dental x-ray machine that has been of tremendous benefit to residents. Vincent also donated a timeshare on Cape Cod that is given annually to an employee for exceptional performance. A former member of Fairview s Board of Directors he also sits on the Board of the Connecticut Eye Bank.

5 Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page 5 NEW SIGN FOR CEMETARY ENTRANCE A new sign and post was recently donated to Fairview by Edward Fargo, Sr. in memory of his father, C. Harold Fargo. The Fargo family has a long history with the Odd Fellows. Mr. Fargo s father, C. Harold Fargo, was a long-time member of the Niantic Lodge #17 and was a past Grand Master, the highest position at the State level in the organization. Ed s brother, Bob, was also very active in the Niantic Lodge for over forty years serving as Nobel Grand for several of those years. Pictured with benefactor Edward Fargo next to the new sign located at the entrance to the Odd Fellows cemetery are his sister, Marjorie Fargo, and his son, David. THE EASTER RABBIT MAKES HIS ROUNDS AT FAIRVIEW Things were 'hopping' at Fairview the day before Good Friday. The Easter Bunny (maintenance department employee Mark Hill) entertained children from the Child Development Center and residents. The children gathered eggs in the courtyard while several Fairview residents watched from inside. Pictured with Peter Rabbit are residents (L-R) Margaret Gerlipp and Mary McNeil along with Child Development Center employee Amanda Hill and one of the children. INTERGENERATIONAL PROGRAM CONTINUES TO BENEFIT RESIDENTS Children from the Child Development Center visit Fairview on a weekly basis. These visits usually include some type of activity with residents such as reading and coloring. This is part of our intergenerational program which has been ongoing for several years. The interaction between the generations is very beneficial as can be seen in the accompanying photo. We continue to expand this program with the financial support of generous individuals and foundations like the Dime Bank (see photo/caption on this page opposite this article). CULTURE CHANGE AT FAIRVIEW Fairview has been in the process of implementing a culture change for several years. The focus is on empowering residents to have more direct input into how they lead their daily lives. Giving residents as many choices as possible is at the heart of this program. The idea is to make Fairview more like a home and less like an institution. One of the initiatives was to create a neighborhood environment which includes street names for hallways. A street naming contest was organized by the resident council along with staff. The winning names are: Coast Guard View; Sailors Walk; Bridge Street; Ferry Crossing; Nautilus Place; Captains Walk; Thames River Drive; and Galley Lane. Pictured with one of the signs is: (L-R) Tomi Stanley, recreation director, Mary McNeil, resident council president, and Deb Morgan, director of nursing. A more indepth story about culture change will appear in the next issue of Point O View. THE DIME BANK MAKES A DONATION TO EX- PAND INTERGENERTIONAL PROGRAM The intergenerational program at Fairview got a big boost recently when the Dime Bank Foundation generously donated $ to provide expanded programs to bring together our skilled care residents and children from our daycare center. This funding will be used to schedule trips to the Children s Museum in Old Saybrook, the Mystic Aquarium, and provide for a visit from the Mystic Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center. The intergenerational program has been a fantastic cooperative venture between our long-term care residents and the child development center. This synergy has produced wonderful moments for our residents and has provided the children with a better understanding of the aging process. Pictured receiving the grant from New London Assistant Branch Manager, Nancy Potter, is David Brown, Fairview Director of Development.
6 Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page 6 PROGRAM STILL GOING STRONG Several residents at Fairview continue to participate in the program that is provided by students and staff from Ella T. Grasso Technical School in Groton. This program affords residents the opportunity to correspond with their loved ones on a weekly basis. The students come e v e r y T h u r s d a y throughout the school year. This program has been in existence for several years. Fairview has a special relationship with the technical school and is very fortunate to have students and staff volunteer their time to help our residents. Pictured at one of the weekly sessions is resident Julia Merriman along with the students and teacher Shawn Carpenter (middle standing). CHILD DEVELOPMENT STAFF TRAINS ON DONATED MANIKINS Through the generosity of Welcome Rebekah Lodge #47, the staff at the Child Development Center was able to accomplish their CPR training required by the State of Connecticut at no cost to Fairview. The all day training was held on March 8. In the past Fairview had to hire an outside agency to accomplish this training. Now all staff at Fairview can be CPR trained by our own certified trainers saving several hundred dollars each time recertification is required. Pictured with two of the manikins is Rebecca Cruelles, Director of the Child Development Center. DISPLAY CABINET The new Odd Fellows and Rebekahs display cabinet in Fairview s lobby has received rave reviews. The items depicted give a glimpse of the history of both orders. Pictured with the new case are (L-R) Dorothy Titus, widow of Harold Titus, former Grand Historian of the Grand Lodge of Connecticut, and Melissa Titus, Dorothy s daughter and current President of the Rebekah Assembly. The Titus family has a long history of association with the Odd Fellows organization. They made a very generous $1, donation to purchase the new cabinet. LOCAL ARTISTS VISIT RESIDENTS During the past several weeks artists such as harpist Faith Leitner and the Ledyard Irish Step Dancers have visited Fairview to entertain residents. The recreation department continuously plans visitations such as these by local musicians and artists to brighten our residents days. This is the first time Faith has performed at Fairview. The Irish Dancers have visited many times. Fairview wishes to thank both Faith and the Irish Dancers for making a difference in the lives of our residents. BUSINESS B4 HOURS AT FAIRVIEW The Mystic Chamber of Commerce held its monthly Business B4 Hours breakfast meeting at Fairview on May 7. Fairview has hosted several gatherings of this nature over the past four y e a r s. T h i s venue provides local businesses a chance to meet and network with each other. It also gives the host business the opportunity to talk about their facility. Administrator, Jim Malloy, mentioned some new initiatives including an electronic medical records system. He also reported that Fairview now holds a five-star overall quality rating. This rating system was developed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Pictured in the bistro at Fairview are many of the meeting s attendees.
7 Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page 7 FAIRVIEW RESIDENT TURNS 100 YEARS OLD! A special event took place on March 18 when resident Dorothy Maxson became a centurion. Mrs. Maxson has been a resident at Fairview for only a short time but has already made many new friends. She is a spry lady with a great smile who enjoys eating at the Bistro. She is pictured with two members of the recreation staff: (L-R) Kendra Campbell and Tomi Stanley. A special party was organized for Mrs. Maxson that included a cake and balloons. FAIRVIEW BOARD MEMBER & SPOUSE READ TO CHILDREN AT CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER Charlie and Anita Beebe took time from their busy schedules to spend a morning at the Child Development Center reading to the children. This was a great experience for both as can be seen by their expressions in the accompanying photo. Charlie and Anita are devoted members of the Odd Fellows and Rebehah organizations. Charlie is a member of Fairview s Board of Directors and holds the current position of Grand Master of the Odd Fellows in the State of Connecticut. Both Charlie and Anita are members of Stonington Lodge #26 and Rebekah Osprey Lodge #20 as well as Mystic Encampment Lodge #17. They are also both members of the Connecticut Eye Bank s Board of Directors. The Eye Bank is affiliated with the Connecticut Odd Fellows. VOLUNTEER PROFILE For the past several years members of the Stonington Odd Fellows Lodge #26 have been visiting residents at Fairview on the third Thursday of each month. These visits are coordinated through the recreation department. Lodge members spend two hours going from room to room helping to brighten the day for residents.
