We have been very busy during the past several months implementing the new MDS 3.0 system, which was designed by Medicare to enhance the quality of care in nursing homes. This new assessment tool has been specifically designed to include the resident and their family in the process. Our staff has devoted a great deal of time implementing this new data collection system which will enhance the staff s ability to assure that our residents requests and preferences are sought after and honored. Our three month pro bono project with Pfizer was officially launched during February to an excited, motivated and dedicated group of individuals (please see more details on page 7). Our projects goal is to create a process improvement to advance the care of our Alzheimer s residents at Fairview. Working together with Fairview, the Pfizer team will incorporate key stakeholders residents, staff, volunteers, residents families and the Culture Change Committee in the development of a process improvement plan to help staff and volunteers easily implement, sustain and track improvements. In just the first few weeks of this partnership we ve witnessed some beneficial changes with our memory impaired residents and look forward to many more transformations that will benefit all the residents of Fairview. I m delighted to be able to let you know that in our annual inspection by the State Health Department we had a deficiency free survey. This couldn t have been accomplished without the dedicated and devoted staff that we are blessed with. My sincerest thanks to all the amazing individuals who helped make this possible. James K. Malloy, Administrator BECOME A $1,000 DONOR AND As a way of saying thank you to our major contributors in 2011 we are providing all $1,000 donors and above a beautiful Sheaffer Pen with Fairview inscribed on the cap. This is our way of recognizing your major commitment to Fairview s future. You may also notice something new on our pledge envelope (see enclosed). Special recognition will be given to donors who contribute at various giving levels on the donor wall in our lobby. And we now have a Legacy Donor Wall for all individuals who wish to provide a lasting gift to Fairview through their estate plan. If you have any questions please contact David Brown, Director of Development, at or at brownd@oddfellowsct.com. 4 Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page 4 SAVINGS INSTITUTE MAKES DONATION The Savings Institute recently provided a $ grant for the purchase of an oxygen concentrator analyzer. We use several oxygen concentrator tanks and each has to be checked for quality operation on a quarterly basis or when a malfunction is detected. Fairview previously had to hire an outside vendor to do these checks. Having our own analyzer will save us considerable funds so that we can allocate precious resources to other areas of resident care. Pictured presenting the check to David Brown, Director of Development, is Elisabeth Page, Groton Savings Institute Branch Manager. FELLOWSHIP MANOR RESIDENT HONORED FOR SERVICE TO HIS COUNTRY Through the efforts of several members of the Fairview staff and particularly receptionist, Liz Weeks, Fellowship Manor resident Billy Joe Foreman was honored for service to his country. A special presentation was held in Fellowship M a n o r s f u n c t i o n room where Mr. Foreman was encircled by family members, several friends and F a i r v i e w employees. Captain A. Michael Edgar USNR, (brother of Liz Weeks) presented Mr. Foreman with a certificate signed by the Commanding Officer of the USS Constitution (Old Ironsides) in commemoration of your extensive service and retirement as a Chief Commissaryman in the United States Navy. He was also presented with a pen constructed from wood taken from the USS Constitution, the oldest ship in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Foreman retired in 1966 after serving his country for over 21 years. Pictured cutting a special cake made for the occasion is Mr. Foreman with Captain Edgar. MATCHING GIFT LEADS TO RECORD- SETTING ANNUAL FUND The 2010 annual fund set records for the number of donors and money collected. Once again the Grand Lodge of Connecticut led the way matching all total gifts up to $5, All donations were placed in Fairview s technology fund to help pay for the ongoing expenses of our electronic medical records system. One hundred and thirtythree donations raised a total of $20, In comparison the first annual fund in 2006 raised just $4, The Grand Lodge has again agreed in 2011 to match up to $5, in total gifts. Pictured presenting the 2010 $5, matching gift check to Administrator Jim Malloy are (L-R) Hank Lucas, Odd Fellows Healthcare 1st VP, Warren Smith, Secretary of the Connecticut Grand Lodge, Dick Campbell, Odd Fellows Healthcare President, and Jim Malloy. POPULAR BISTRO BREAKFAST FOR RESIDENTS NOW AVAILABLE TWO DAYS A WEEK Last year Fairview added a special culture change breakfast in the Bistro for residents. The response has been so good that a second day is now included. On Tuesday and Thursday mornings all residents whose diets permit can go to the Bistro for a ready-to-order breakfast consisting of any style of eggs, home fries, bacon or sausage, pastries, fruit, juice, coffee or tea. Their order is taken by a staff volunteer and delivered freshly made minutes after being prepared. This has been one of the biggest culture change initiatives at Fairview, but certainly not the only one. Other initiatives include fine dining, revamped shower rooms, empowering the residents and encouraging them to create an award to give to staff members they feel deserve recognition, renaming of hallways to local streets, and Healing Touch therapy.
5 Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page 5 January 28, 2011 To the Staff of Fairview, A FEW TESTIMONIALS FROM RESIDENTS FAMILIES Our most sincere thanks to each of you for the kindness and care you gave to my mother Sylvia during her brief stay. So many of you worked to meet all of her needs and to make her comfortable. Our family appreciates your professionalism and your humanity. You helped make a difficult time a little easier. Our best wishes for a good New Year for you all. Melvin and Iris Yoselevsky. - January, 2011 To the Fairview Staff: Once again, I want to thank you all for all you did to get my Mom, Shirley Jacobsen, back on her feet. I can always count on you to do the best for her. It is a great relief to me when she is in your care. I hope you know how very grateful I am for all that you do. God Bless you all! Lee Kersteter - January 2, 2011 Dear Staff of Fairview Nursing Home, We are very grateful to you for the loving care you gave to our mother, Julia Parker, who passed away at your home on November 27. She seemed very comfortable with you, and we knew that we could count on your care for her every need. You helped make a very sorrowful time much easier for her and for us. Thank you so much. Sincerely, the Parker Family Don, Martha, Jerry, Karen, Tim, Kevin and Mary RESIDENTS BENEFIT FROM DONATIONS Four new robe, towel and blanket warmers have been purchased by Fairview through the generosity of The Savings Institute and the Mystic Rotary Club. These warmers provide much comfort to residents at various times of the day and particularly after bathing. Items like this are critical to the culture change at Fairview and are one more way we can improve the quality of life for our residents. PENTAGON 9/11 BOMBING SURVIVOR SPEAKS AT FAIRVIEW Dan Holdridge captivated an audience of over 40 people in Fairview s auditorium on December 2 recounting his harrowing experience the day the Pentagon was attacked on September 11, Dan was working for General Dynamics as a Program Director on loan to the Pentagon as a contractor. He was injured in the blast and was one of only two survivors from his work group of thirty-four. One-hundred and eighty-four people were killed that day at the Pentagon. Dan has written a book called Pentagon Prayer which describes in detail the entire ordeal. Dan dedicates his time speaking to people across the country about his experience, what helped him heal and how he became an even stronger person than ever before. Dan serves as President and CEO of Eagle Industries Inc. located in Westerly, RI. He is also very involved with the National 4-H Leadership Trust and served as a trustee from 2002 to Pictured with Dan (seated) at the Fairview program are: (L-R) guest Fred Sousa, Mary, Sepowitz, Noble Grand of Odd Fellows Lodge #17 and Dan s aunt, and Richard Trudelle, Noble Grand of Stonington Lodge #26. DOMINION NUCLEAR CONNECTICUT INC. MAKES $10, GIFT Fairview has wanted to replace its aging dishwasher in the dietary department for some time. The current machine is over thirty years old. It is very inefficient and has to be repaired often. A new dishwasher is quite expensive so we haven t had the funds to buy one. Dominion Nuclear has come to our aid by making a $10, donation to help offset the cost of a new industrial size dishwasher. This is the lead gift we needed to give us the momentum to make the purchase. The new industrial size dishwasher will save Fairview over $9, per year in water and energy costs. Pictured presenting the check to David Brown, Director of Development, is Nancy Bulkeley, Community Affairs Representative at Dominion Nuclear Connecticut, Inc.
6 Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page 6 REBEKAH LODGE HOLDS COOKIE SALE The Osprey Rebekah Lodge #20 held its annual holiday cookie sale at Fairview on December 17. The cookies were all home made by lodge members and sold out within a matter of minutes. All proceeds from the sale ($183.00) went to various charities in the local area. Pictured with the colorful arrangement of cookies is Rich Trudelle, Noble Grand of Stonington Lodge # 26 and Anita Beebe, Noble Grand of Rebekah Lodge #20. FAIRVIEW VOLUNTEER OF THE QUARTER Petty Officer Lewis Augusto, Logistics Specialist 2nd class, has volunteered at Fairview for the past several months. He began his volunteer work in May of 2010 helping at our annual Mother s Day tea. He has also helped with our annual Honor our Military. You will often find Lewis visiting with many of our residents in the afternoons providing much needed one-on-one time. Lewis also plays a role with our retired military residents. He visits with them regularly reminiscing about their experiences in the military while sharing his knowledge and expertise in today s military. Lewis was recently named Service Person of the month by the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut for his other community service work throughout New London County. He is pictured receiving the award from Retired Navy Captain Denny Hicks representing the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut. Our goal is to have a new 22 flat screen television in every resident s room where needed. Pictured presenting the check to David Brown, Director of Development, is Donna Buechel, Groton Wal-Mart Community Coordinator. FAIRVIEW RESIDENT COUNCIL INITIATES AWARD In October of 2009 the Resident Council wanted to express their appreciation to staff members of Fairview that go above and beyond the call of duty, on a regular basis do excellent work, and who make them feel important and valued as individuals. They created the Resident Council Appreciation A w a r d. Every two months at a R e s i d e n t C o u n c i l meeting an individual is nominated. If the entire Council is in agreement this individual is presented the award at the next council meeting. Recently the Resident Council has extended this award to residents who also display attributes such as leadership, advocacy and a positive reflection of their home. The following individuals or groups have received this award of excellence: The Bistro, Deborah Morgan, Director of Nursing, Recreation Department, Margaret Gerlipp, resident, and David Jones, Maintenance Department. Pictured are members of the dietary staff, recreation department, Mrs. Gerlipp, seated, and Deb Morgan, far right. David Jones was not available for the photo. PFIZER BEGINS PRO BONO INITIATIVE FOR CULTURE CHANGE Pfizer, Inc. has chosen Fairview from several other non-profits in the southeastern Connecticut area to implement a pro bono project to develop culture change recommendations with a focus on care for Alzheimer s residents, and create a plan to implement them. The Pfizer team will work with Fairview s Culture Change Committee and other key stakeholders (residents, staff, and residents families) to research and create recommendations for culture change improvements, with a focus on Alzheimer s residents. Working with Fairview the team will then develop a process improvement plan to help staff and volunteers easily implement, sustain and ideally track culture change improvements for Alzheimer s resident s. Progress from this work could then be used as a template for Fairview to expand later to other parts of the organization. This program will last for approximately 3 months ending in May/June. There will be six members on the Pfizer team. A final progress report will be included in the June Point O View. RESIDENT CHRISTMAS PARTY A BIG SUCCESS The annual resident Christmas Party was held on December 12th, Pictured is Peter, a resident, and volunteers Timothy Stanley as Santa and Sterling Stanley - Gillette as Santa's helper. Ninety residents participated in this event and were provided with a small gift by Santa. Entertainment was provided by resident Ruth Bell on the piano. Cupcakes and punch were enjoyed by all.
