Through the years the Point O View has expanded and become a much more professional looking communications piece for Fairview due in great part to Carol s efforts. Because of new volunteer responsibilities where she resides, Carol has decided to relinquish her duties to Mary Sepowitz LPN, a longtime second shift nurse at Fairview. She will however continue to volunteer at Fairview in other capacities such as playing the piano for residents on a weekly basis. We want to thank Carol for all of the hundreds of hours she has dedicated to producing the Point O View and for making it such an enjoyable newsletter to read. 2 Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page AUCTION FAIRVIEW AUCTION NETS OVER $53,000! Auctioneer Daniel Buck Soules and helpers at the 2007 auction The 5 th annual antiques and collectibles auction was held on Saturday, November 3 in Fairview s auditorium. This is Fairview s major annual fundraiser. Thanks to the overwhelming number of individuals and businesses that donated items and dollars, we finished with a net profit of just over $53,000. Over the past three years alone the auction has raised $157,000. All of the proceeds have been used to help Fairview upgrade residents rooms and existing dining areas, furnish our new bistro, and help pay for our new therapy gym. This year s profit will be used to pay for renovations in our main lobby and in the multi-purpose Thames Room. WE ARE NOW ACCEPTING ITEMS FOR NEXT YEAR S AUCTION TO BE HELD ON NOVEMBER 8, 2008 VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT Fairview is very fortunate to have over 180 volunteers who spend hours of their free time helping in various capacities. Hospital Corpsman Joseph Turner is one of these volunteers. He takes great pride in motivating other volunteers from the Navy Sub Base hospital to also volunteer at Fairview. He entertains residents with his musical talent and with his singing. Joseph spends an average of 25 hours per month as a volunteer. Thank you, Joseph, for your dedication to our residents and for increasing their quality of life. (There will be a Volunteer Tree that our residents will help decorate. The theme is angels and anyone who would like to donate an angel ornament can do so by leaving it at the front desk for Sarah Stanley.)

6 Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page 6 A few reminders on how to stay well during the winter months: Serious respiratory illnesses like influenza, colds, and Respiratory Synctial Virus (RSV) may be spread by coughing, sneezing and having unclean hands. These illnesses are easily spread in places where people have close contact. You can help to stop the spread of these germs by covering your nose and mouth with a tissue every time you cough or sneeze and then throw the used tissue in a wastebasket. If you do not have a tissue, sneeze or cough into your sleeve. After coughing or sneezing, always clean your hands with soap and water or an alcohol based hand cleaner. There are many hand washing facilities located throughout Fairview. STONINGTON LODGE #26 RESIDENT ROOM DEDICATION Through the generosity of Jim and Tommie O Boyle, a resident room in Fairview s new addition was recently dedicated on behalf of Stonington Lodge #26 I.O.O.F. Jim is a former member of the Fairview Board of Directors and has been a member of the Stonington Lodge for 18 years. PLEASE STAY HOME WHEN YOU ARE SICK. Your loved ones may not have the reserve to fight off an infection. If you have been exposed to a cold in the community be thoughtful of others and wear a mask if you must visit. Just a reminder that during the winter months we may have your loved one on room rest if they have cold symptoms to prevent the spread of germs to other residents. Remember that the best way to prevent the spread of germs is by washing your hands when you come into visit and when you leave your family member s room. This can prevent the spread of infection. Lila Bareford RN Infection Control FAIRVIEW JOINS UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN PREPARING FOR THE FLU SEASON We had a busy October getting ready for Flu season by giving our residents and staff their Influenza vaccines. We want to remind families to also protect themselves and their loved ones from influenza this year by getting the flu shot for yourself and your family. The flu season can run from October to April. For the first time, Fairview is participating in the 2007 Combined Federal Campaign. The Campaign is a part of the United Way and its mission is to support and to promote philanthropy through a voluntary program that is employee-focused, cost-efficient and effective in providing all Federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all. There are approximately 10,000 federal employees in the Groton-New London area. 7 Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page 7 DEVELOPMENT REPORT Fundraising continues to be strong at Fairview thanks to the many individuals, organizations, and Foundations that have generously made donations since our last newsletter. Our auction was a great success again this year (see page two) and the annual fund continues to grow. As of November 23 there are 94 donors who have contributed $8,005. The Grand Lodge of Connecticut has agreed to match up to $3,000 so we have already exceeded our $10,000 goal for This is almost three times last year s final results! All proceeds from the fund this year will be used to help pay for the upcoming renovation of the Thames Room, a multi-purpose room. If you have not yet made a donation to the annual fund you can do so by returning the enclosed envelope. The fund drive ends on December 31. Groton Wal*Mart Community Services Manager Cindy Garvey presents David Brown with a $1,000 donation from the Wal*Mart Foundation CHARITABLE IRA ROLLOVERS TO FADE INTO THE WINTER SUNSET If you re at least 70 ½ years old and wish to make a tax-free distribution from a qualified IRA to a charitable organization, the time to act is now because this provision expires on December 31, Part of the Pension Protection Act of 2006, the provision allows each donor to rollover up to $100,000 of IRA assets without impact on annual gross income and, the rollover counts toward the minimum distribution requirement. Rolling over all or part of your IRA to us goes far beyond tax advantages it also is an important way to make a difference to the quality of life for our residents right here at Fairview. As always, we encourage you to consult your professional advisor before acting Besides the annual fund there are several other ways to donate to Fairview. Gifts can be made in memory or in honor of someone you love, to our Endowment, or to our Child Development Center. If you have made provisions for Fairview in your estate we would like to know so we can properly recognize you. At the same time it would help us to plan for our financial future.

8 Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page 8 Friends Learning Together CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER RECEIVES ENHANCED SECURITY SYSTEM As reported in the last issue of the Point O View, funding for a drastically upgraded security system at the Fairview Child Development Center was secured from the State of Connecticut with the help of State Senator Andy Maynard. The $10,000 grant was used to install a stateof-the-art video and audio security system that now provides the center s director, Rebecca Cruelles, with the ability to view all areas of the center including the entrance, classrooms, and the outside playground area. This system also records all activity and digitally stores it for a 30 day period. It can also be stored permanently on a CD. The system is also adaptable in that it has the capability to allow parents to login to the network to see their children in real time. According to Cruelles, there is no other Child Development Center of our size in the area that has this type of security system. Ms. Cruelles is pictured in her office standing next to the new big screen monitor and accompanying hardware. GROTON POCKET LADIES DONATE TO FAIRVIEW Fairview was the recipient of the generosity and kindness of a group of eight wonderful people who call themselves the Groton Pocket Ladies. They made beautiful quilts (with pockets for a stuffed animal thus the name Pocket Ladies) and donated them to residents at Fairview. This display of kindness and caring will forever be appreciated and cherished by our residents. STEPHEN TERRY LODGE #59 MAKES $10,000 DONATION TO FAIRVIEW Thanks to the Stephen Terry Lodge #59 in Portland, CT, the new courtyard area between the addition and the existing building is now a reality. The lodge donated $10,000 to help pay for the landscaping in this beautiful spot where many residents and family members go to enjoy the outdoors in a quiet and peaceful setting. The courtyard is pictured along with the bronze plaque commemorating this very generous gift to Fairview. BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS DONATED BY SON OF FORMER RESIDENT STONINGTON LODGE #26 DONATES TO LOCAL SOCIAL SERVICE AGENCIES Charlie Beebe, Deputy Grand Master of the Connecticut Independent Order of Odd Fellows Grand Lodge and a member of Stonington Lodge #26, made deliveries of two complete Thanksgiving dinners to the Groton and Stonington social services agencies on November 15. Members of the Stonington Lodge contributed to make this possible. Charlie is pictured with Vicki Anderson of the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center (below) and with a member of the Town of Groton social services staff. Fairview s surroundings became much brighter recently when David Deckler stopped by to drop off three beautiful hanging plants for our residents to enjoy. David s Mom, Toby, was a resident at

10 Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page 10 News of the Fairview Family After several family meetings with the interdisciplinary team it was decided that using a wheelchair at home would be the most efficient and safest way to get around until the healing process allows her to put weight on her foot. Eager to finish recuperating at home, a discharge plan was formulated. Mrs. Sharp saw her doctor, a fiberglass cast was applied; a wheelchair and walker were ordered; VNA services were arranged and she is now at home continuing the healing process among her family and friends. Mr. James K. Malloy Administrator Dear Sir: FAIRVIEW TESTIMONIAL Article submitted by: Jane Novak, Rehabilitation Therapy Services Mrs. Sharp had an injury and sustained a fractured ankle. After surgery she was not allowed to put any weight on her foot. The doctor recommended short term rehab. She decided on Fairview having had many friends who had positive experiences at Fairview. In addition, it is close to home. Mrs. Sharp candidly told me that she was expecting to see some sad individuals at Fairview, however when she arrived, she found a charming atmosphere and friendly staff that were truly interested in her and her individual needs. She received both Physical and Occupational Therapy to gain strength and instruction on using a walker without putting one foot on the floor. She accomplished these goals as well as how to maneuver in a wheelchair independently. Despite a thoroughly broken leg, my recent two week stay at Fairview was a pleasant interval. I was very impressed with the beautiful facility and quality of care given by the excellent personnel. My room, 103, was sunny and bright, clean and comfortable. The lounge, sunroom, greenhouse, and beautifully furnished library were all fine additions. The Bistro and lovely patio were excellent ideas very well executed. Best of all, for me at least, the therapy room sunny, bright, beautifully equipped, with a warm, up-beat atmosphere kudos to Jane, Chris, Dot, Brenda and all dispensing with wit and charm their extensive knowledge of all things therapy. All the fine professionals there were a credit to Fairview kind, patient, informative, and really good natured. Many thanks and best wishes to Deshon, Karen, Pat, Sue, Suzette, Sandra, Mona, Lore, Steve, Lance, Joel, Rob, Heather, Helen, Nadine, Kim and all others whose names escape me just now. CHELSEA GROTON BANK FOUNDATION MAKES $1,600 DONATION The Chelsea Groton Bank Foundation provided a $1,600 award to Fairview during its semi-annual grant distribution cycle to purchase a Dinamap machine. This piece of equipment is used to monitor resident vital signs such as blood pressure and temperature. The Dinamap is not only extremely accurate, but also very fast. Resident temperatures are provided in approximately 7 seconds, saving the nursing staff valuable time. It also has a printer to record all readings. Pictured are members of the lodge including: (back row) Arthur Swan (2 nd from left), District Deputy Grand Master, Warren Smith (5 th from left), Grand Lodge Secretary, Ed FAIRVIEW RECEIVES $1,500 INTERGENERATIONAL GRANT The Liberty Bank Foundation chose Fairview as a recipient of a grant to help pay for an expanded intergenerational program. This is the first time Fairview has received a grant from Liberty Bank. It will be used to expand the existing intergenerational program to include field trips, enrichment activities, such as visiting storytellers and musicians, and new resource material on intergenerational activities. The intergenerational program has become a huge success with the children and their adopted residents. Fairview Odd Fellows Home of Connecticut Mission Statement: Fairview, the Odd Fellows Home of Connecticut s mission is to provide our residents with the best nursing care and rehabilitation services, while enhancing the quality of their life in a dignified atmosphere by using the skills and compassion of our staff, and utilizing the latest advances in technology. The Odd Fellows Home of Connecticut was established in 1892 to provide care for the aged and indigent members of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, their wives, widows, and orphaned children. A century later the odd Fellows Home consists of Fairview, a nursing home and rehabilitation center, Fellowship Manor, a senior housing complex, and Friends Learning Together, a child development center. The Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Rebekahs continue to provide humanitarian care.
