5 Monumental Journey The 142nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Three Years with the Army of the Potomac After the Battle of Fredericksburg, the 142nd went into winter camp near Belle Plains, VA., where they built winter quarters on the traditional manner, half log huts, with canvas roofs. Captain Heffley had little to report. On January 11, he did mention some mischief and had to reprimand a few lads for pouring gun powder down some chimneys. While time in winter camp was passing slowly, General Burnside was planning his next maneuver which again would result in disaster. An unwise winter march commenced on January 20th, 1863 in unusually mild weather. Again attempting to cross the Rappahannock, this time North of Fredericksburg. The operation involved a large scale cavalry operation for the first time. As the army began to move, the rain began to fall and the roads would turn into a quagmire. Captain Heffley would write: marched about 5 miles through the mud shoe deep, then put up for the night...the roads are miserable. Dead men, horses, and mules can be seen all along the road. Encamped about 3 miles above Falmouth. Run out of rations. The march made little progress after 3 days. Unable to cross the river, the order was give to return to their original camps. Burnside would be replaced on January 26, by General Hooker. The months would pass slowly with little to report except the mundane camp life of winter punctuated with the occasional picket duty, drill, and fighting off sickness that is common being exposed to the elements. On Thursday, April 9, the 142nd along with the rest of 1st Corps and 6th Corps were reviewed by President & Mrs. Lincoln. On Monday, April, 20th the army began to move. Marching in mud arriving near Port Royal, VA on the 21st, then returning back to Camp near Belle Plains, VA. Moving to the Rappahannock River on April 30, reported heavy firing on the right, but not near Company F s camp. On the 2nd Reb artillery was shelling their location. Ordered to march up river, the 142nd held the extreme right of the Union Army. Col. Warren would sum up the Chancellorsville campaign as follows: We were making feint below Fredericksburg to draw part of the enemy s forces from Chancellorsville, the enemy was shelling us from the heights, when we received word that the 11th Corps had broken and we were ordered to report, with the least possible delay to the right....before we reached the front at Chancellorsville we had marched 18 miles...this was the hottest march we ever experienced...a least 25 men dropped dead from sunstroke....we walked the 1st 12 miles and never touched the earth, by reasons of the blankets and clothing thrown away by troops. After crossing the river at United States Ford, we passed up to the front, where the battle was raging. The ground had been fought over and the wounded and dying were crying piteously for help and water. It was nearly midnight when we wheeled into line, was ordered to fix bayonets and to go in with a yell....a lull in the battle (ensued)...both armies ceased firing...we laid down our bayoneted muskets until morning. The next day the battle resumed. The fighting occurred all day, eventually Hooker would order a withdrawal back to the Rappahannock River. It is May 6. The 142nd had not strayed far from Fredericksburg in 6 months, but their destiny would take them on a much different path. Close to their homes they would face their greatest test. A fateful 3 days awaits in Adams County. Source: Civil War Diaries of Capt. Albert Heffley and Lt. Cyrus P. Heffley, , Editor: Earl E.
