2 OREGON Our Philosophy Alis Volat Propriis (She Flies With Her Own Wings) Two key standards strives for with our producers are first, wines of striking personality that demonstrate the "typicity" of fruit, terroir and style of their given appellations, and secondly, a strong quality to price ratio. These two ideals are too often at odds with one another when we are considering new producers or portfolios and Oregon wines have eluded our book for twenty years for this very reason. Thus, it is with great excitement and pride that we introduce the six newest additions to the family of wines all from Willamette Valley, Oregon. These producers epitomize everything we look for in our producers with wines that express a focused purity of fruit, stay true to their terroir, and provide excellent value at their respective price points. We think you will agree is fortunate to have found this group of sensible wine producers who steer away from the heavy handed wine making style and just keep it simple. In celebrating our 20 th year as a fine wine wholesaler, what better time to grow our portfolio with these exceptional wines!

3 Discover OREGON Wines Behind Every Bottle, a Place and a Face Oregon wines reflect the essence of the land where they are grown and of the people who craft them. The soils, the weather and the gentle sunny slopes throughout the state enable wine grapes to ripen slowly during the summer and fall and to develop complex, exquisite flavors. Our wine styles are uniquely Oregon from our cool climate varieties like Pinot noir and Pinot gris to warmer climate varieties like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Our winegrowers and winemakers are handcrafted artisans who have a deep appreciation for the land. They farm sustainably to ensure the land is fertile for years to come. They understand that place matters and believe our unique geology and microclimates produce distinctive wines. Oregon winemakers are families, farmers and environmental stewards. Collaboration is key. From the pioneers in the 60s and 70s to the up-and-coming stars, our industry works together to ensure that Oregon s wine and the state s reputation is world-class. Small, family-owned is our nature. We are primarily small producers many of whom make 5,000 cases or less who believe that careful attention to detail produces great wines. Our pioneers and visionaries are still actively involved with their wineries, but there are also second generation winemakers and artisans trying their hand and creating boutique wines. Diversity is our namesake. Our winegrowing regions and our winemakers are diverse. Varying microclimates throughout the state s 16 growing regions enable us to grow a broad range of varietals. Sustainability sets us apart. No other winegrowing region is as unified in our dedication to sustainable farming practices. Nearly 30 percent of our vineyards are certified sustainable, organic and biodynamic. Many of those who aren t certified still believe in sustainable farming and employ the practices and principles in their vineyards. Both our larger, more established vineyards and our smaller boutique producers alike make sustainability a priority. W W W. O R E G O N W I N E. O R G

4 Andrew Rich Wines OREGON OVERVIEW Although Andrew Rich says his first love is Syrah, particularly from the northern Rhône, he went overseas to receive his oenology and viticulture training in Burgundy. He began at a program in Dijon, recommended to him by Ted Lemon, the first American winemaker to take up the reins of a Burgundy domaine. There was, however, a slight snag. "I enrolled in that program, but - this is the problem sometimes with winging it - I found out later it only met once a week. So what was I going to do the rest of the time?" VARITIES Pinot Noir Merlot Cabernet Franc Syrah Roussanne Malbec Syrah Gewürztraminer He eventually found another program at the CFPPA in Beaune, where, he says, "I ended up living in this fleabag hotel, right on the ring road around Beaune. It was Beaune in the winter so it was cold and gray, but it was great." Andrew Rich After receiving his degree in France, Rich wrote to Randall Grahm seeking employment at Bonny Doon, then the biggest producer of Rhône wines in the U.S. He started in the cellar earning a meager wage, and soon afterward faced a rather unexpected challenge. "They said, 'oh, you're going to distill,'" he recalls. "I mean this is typical Randall Grahm. I said, 'I don't know anything about distilling,' but I didn't really know anything about working in the cellar either, so I guess it didn't make any difference." "The experience was invaluable," he says of working with the maker of such charismatic American Rhône translations as Le Cigare Volant and Old Telegram. The two clearly shared the same venturesome spirit and profound affection for Rhône varietals. But with the rapid expansion of the winery, Rich began to feel that all he was ever doing was bottling, and he started to consider launching his own enterprise farther north. In 1994 he moved to Oregon, a place he'd first visited six years earlier to volunteer at something called the International Pinot Noir Festival that John and Kay Eliasson told him about. He worked that fall at Ponzi in Beaverton before launching his own label in 1995, crafting small lots of the Rhône-style wines he loved. Andrew Rich produces wine in the state-of-the-art Carlton Winemakers Studio, the nation's first "green" cooperative winemaking facility. The facility is home to several respected Oregon wine producers including: Hamacher Wines, Andrew Rich Wines, Bryce Vineyard, Domaine Meriwether, Dominio, Penner-Ash Wine Cellars and Soter Vineyard. 5 R Stuart & Co. OVERVIEW OREGON VARITIES After making wine for other people for more than Pinot Gris twenty years, Rob Stuart and his partners founded Pinot Noir R.Stuart & Co. in early With a degree in biochemistry from Rensselear Polytechnic Institute in New York, and a short but eye-opening career in the labs at Baylor University in Texas, Rob started his winemaking journey on the bottling line at Hans Kornell in Napa, California. From there he went on to work in the cellar at Valley View Vineyards and then on to Stanton Hills in Yakima, Washington where he made wine for ten years. Finally Rob managed to return to Oregon in 1994 when he became the winemaker at Erath Vineyards, his home away from home until he started his current adventure. Now he makes the wines he loves: Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Sparkling wine. Life is good! The R. Stuart & Co. wines are pinots and sparkling wine made in that classic Rob Stuart style - true to the fruit each vineyard offers, graceful, honest and warm. You might call them "Reserve" wines. Wines you save for a special occasion, or at least Friday night. Wines which will kindle your flame. Big Fire: This is what it's all about. The adventure has begun. For us, here in the heart of downtown McMinnville ("the Beaune of the New World" as described by Jay McInerney), the dream is unfolding, case by case. Rob & Maria Stuart We've taken over an old granary and converted it to a winery. We harvest grapes from vineyards like Temperance Hill, Melrose, Daffodil Hill and Weber... some of our favorites. 6 Scott Paul OREGON Martha & Scott Wright OVERVIEW VARITIES Founders Martha & Scott Wright launched Scott Paul Wines in Pinot Noir 1999 in California, with a burning passion, much to learn, contracts for highly coveted fruit, small investments from a few folks who believed in them, and most importantly, the tutelage of Greg LaFollette of Tandem Winery, a dear friend and mentor. That fall they crushed 7 tons of fruit, and the following year bottled 350 cases of the first Scott Paul wines. It wasn't long though before Oregon's cool climate and great success with Pinot Noir lured them to the Willamette Valley. They began their Oregon winemaking starting with the 2000 vintage, and Scott took a position as Managing Director of Domaine Drouhin Oregon in They moved their production to the Carlton Winemakers Studio for the vintages. In 2003, Cameron Healy, founder of Kettle Chips, dear friend, and mentor, became a partner in Scott Paul Wines. Ready to have control over their winemaking environment and to grow their small brand, they devised plans to build a new winery facility and tasting room. Excited by the opportunity to participate in Carlton s rejuvenation, they bought two historic buildings and began their renovation in Their winery is housed in a repurposed granary, the former Madsen Grain Company, built in Renovation was completed just in time to open their doors in June 2006, and to start making wine in the new facility that fall. MISSION Produce and market the best wines with honor and integrity, utilizing practices that fully respect the earth and the chain of human lives that create, nurture, market and consume the wines, and the interlocking web of communities where we work and live. Sustainability - Extending to the environmental impact of all practices throughout the grape growing, winemaking and marketing process, and to generating significant profitability to sustain the business. Organic & Biodynamic - A way of farming and living with nature that embraces all of nature as an interconnected whole. Niche leadership - Never a desire to be the biggest, simply the best within our chosen universe. Ourselves, each other, our families - By putting these first, we can do the best job of putting our customers first. Balance, health & wellness - This is the key to all things. Fun - We strive to be a company that is inclusive, generous, welcoming, and heroic in its customer service. Purity - Honesty and purity in our winemaking and business practices. 7 Daedalus Cellars OVERVIEW Winemaker, Aron Hess studied Political Science in his undergrad education and ultimately decided that wine was a better fit for his career. After moving to the Willamette Valley in Oregon in 1997, he began working as a cellar rat at Flynn Winery and soon there after worked his way up to OREGON VARITIES Pinot Noir Pinot Gris Riesling Chardonnay Grüner Veltliner become assistant winemaker for Lynn Penner-Ash at Rex Hill Vineyards. Aron became winemaker when Lynn left Rex Hill in Three years later he became head winemaker at 12th and Maple Wine Co., a state-of-the-art custom crush facility in Dundee and home to Aron s 20+ clients and Daedalus Cellars. THE NAME Aron Hess Daedalus comes from Greek mythology, by way of James Joyce, who is Aron s favorite writer. Stephen Daedalus appeared as Joyce s alter ego in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and again, with his wings clipped, in Ulysses. In the myth, Daedalus was an inventor, most famously of the Labyrinth at Knossos, a stylized version of which is represented in our logo. Unfortunately, he was also later imprisoned in his Labyrinth, along with his son Icarus. They managed to escape, but only Daedalus made it; Icarus succumbing to hubris. We chose the name, the myth if you will, because we see in it what we think Joyce saw: the freedom that can be gained in creative pursuit, and the cost at which it can come, especially if you don t remain humble. This race and this country and this life produced me, he said. I shall express myself as I am. This quote that appears on our front labels refers both to Pinot Noir as a grape that is particularly expressive of its terroir, and to our approach to winemaking. We make wine because we are passionate about it. Aron makes it in the style that he likes, and if other people like it enough to buy it, that s a bonus. We hope you enjoy our wine as much as we do. 8 Grochau Cellars John Grochau OVERVIEW Grochau Cellars is the project and passion of John Grochau ad his wife Kerri. John has been fortunate to learn the trade from some of the Willamette Valley s finest winemakers. From the pioneering cellars and OREGON VARITIES Pinot Noir Sauvignon Blanc Tempranillo Syrah large-scale work of Erath Winery to the years as Doug Tunnel s assistant at the esteemed Brick House Wines. John has logged the numerous hours of careful attention, expert advice and forklift skills necessary to risk his own money on his own endeavor. John grew up in Portland and watched his backyard evolve into a worldclass wine area. After years of selling wine at some of Portland s finest restaurants, including his 13-year stint at Higgins, it was John s desire to learn the craft behind the wines he loved and to try and approach the process of making wine with the same blend of curiosity, respect and excitement that he feels when drinking it. With a focus on Pinot Noir, Grochau Cellars has met its goal of crafting wines that are first, a joy to drink. Proprietor and winemaker, John Grochau, believes in making wines without exerting too much influence over them. That is, without the aid of modern winemaking technology, John allows the wine to progress and evolve more naturally. As a result, John s wines present fruit that sings out, offering a true expression of the unique terroir of the lush Willamette Valley. PHILOSOPHY It s simple really: don t screw it up. Resist the urge to do too much. Modern winemakers have such an array of options available to them, it s staggering. Micro-oxygenation wine concentrators enzyme addition not to mention the temptation so many indulge in to beat an otherwise fine wine over the head with a battery of new oak. We eschew all this. Minimal handling, subtle coaxing, oak as a seasoning not as a main dish. These are the hallmarks of our wines. 9 Eugene Wine Cellars OVERVIEW Bruce and Brad Biehl were introduced to the wine industry in the late 1970's after working in agriculture during their youth. Bruce leased his first vineyard in 1978 OREGON VARITIES Pinot Noir Pinot Gris and began developing independent vineyards in the Willamette Valley while earning his degree from Oregon State University in Agriculture Resource and Economics. Since graduating school, Bruce has developed over 140 vineyard operations in 13 counties within Oregon. Meanwhile, Brad Biehl graduated from UC Davis with a Viticulture and Oenology degree, then moved to Provence in Southern France to comanage Chateau Revelette. Brad returned to Oregon in 1990 to work with Bruce developing vineyard sites. In 1991 Brad was recruited by Ed King to build one of Oregon's premiere wineries, King Estate. In 2000, Bruce and wife Bettina opened the doors of Eugene Wine Cellars. Bruce continues his management of independent vineyards, while providing custom wine development services, private label wines, and bulk wine products.
