2 Bio # 5 Joe Hannan, Iowa State University Graduate Student by Dr. Gail Nonnecke, ISU Horticulture, nonnecke@iastate.edu There are currently six graduate students at Iowa State University (ISU) in viticulture and enology. Some have full-time jobs while they are in school. The students are: Lee Trebbien Goldsmith, Paul Gospodarczyk, Joe Hannan, Dennis Portz, Randall Vos and Lisa Wasko. This is the fifth in a series of student biographies to showcase these six ISU graduate students emphasizing viticulture and nology in their degree programs. (Former profiles are in previous Wine Grower News: L. Goldsmith: #65, D. Portz: # 67, P. Gospodarczyk: # 72, and L. Wasko # 75). Joe Hannan is an Ag Specialist at the Muscatine Island Research Farm, Fruitland, IA and a part-time graduate student under Dr. Paul Domoto. (Above) Joe weighing grapes at ISU Southeast He manages the Iowa State University (ISU) research farm at Crawfordsville, Iowa. vineyard at Southeast Research Farm in Crawfordsville. In addition to his viticulture duties, he conducts the horticultural All-America Selections trials and Home Demonstration Garden trials in Fruitland, evaluates several sweet cherry varieties for Southern Iowa, and assists Mr. Vince Lawson in the horticultural research at the Muscatine Island Research Farm, including muskmelons. Since starting at Muscatine, Joe developed a website and newsletter for the research farm. Joe s graduate research in viticulture investigates fertility amendments for correcting a potassiummagnesium antagonism in higher ph vineyard soils. This pot culture study with grapevines will establish general guidelines that may be used throughout Iowa and the Mississippi Valley vineyards for correcting an imbalance in soil potassium and magnesium. Drs. Tom Loynachan (ISU soil science) and Gail Nonnecke (ISU horticulture) serve on his graduate committee with Paul Domoto. (Above) Joe and Josh Day (intern) during melon harvest at ISU Muscatine Island research farm. Joe is from Peosta, IA, ten minutes west of Dubuque. He graduated in 2005 from ISU with a B.S. in Horticulture. He took an interest in fruit and vegetable production while working at the Hort Research Station for several years during college and Gail Nonnecke served as his undergraduate advisor. After graduation, Joe moved to Arizona working in landscape architecture but returned to ISU in June 2006 to fill the horticulture ag specialist position at the Muscatine Island Research Farm. He has enjoyed reconnecting with Iowa s viticulture and horticultural industries. 2

3 Wine Judges Can be Wrong Too! A recent study of the judges at the California State Fair Wine from showed that wine competition judges are not very consistent. Between 65 and 70 judges were tested each year. About 10 percent of the judges were able to replicate their score within a single medal group. Another 10 percent, on occasion, scored the same wine Bronze to Gold. Judges tend to be more consistent in what they don t like than what they do. An analysis of variance covering every panel over the study period indicated that only about half of the panels presented awards based solely on wine quality. Of the 65 panels surveyed from 2005 to 2008, only 30 of them produced similar results to their competition scores. The inconsistent judging was highlighted by one panel rejecting the first two samples of a wine, only to award it a double gold on the third tasting You can read the entire document, An Examination of Judge Reliability at a Major U.S. Wine Competition by Robert T. Hodgson in the Journal of Economics, Vol. 3, Issue 2, Fall 2008, pages here: %20Hodgson%20( ).pdf Farmers Market Promotion Program (FMPP) Grants I know that many of you vine/wine types are involved with farmers markets. I thought this might be of interest to you. PURPOSE: to improve and expand domestic farmers markets, roadside stands, communitysupported agriculture programs, agritourism activities, and other direct producer-to-consumer market opportunities. Proposals should support agricultural marketing enterprises where farmers or vendors sell their own products directly to customers and where the sales of these farm products represent the core business of the entity. FMPP funds have been used to provide educational workshops to farmers market managers and farmers/vendors; acquire permanent signage; purchase supplies for underserved farmers and markets; conduct promotional campaigns. Eligible applicants include agricultural cooperative, producer network, producer association, local government, nonprofit corporation, public benefit corporation, economic development corporation and regional farmers market authority. Grants will range from $2,500 to $100,000 over 2 years. In 2008, there were 85 grants awarded. Matching funds are not required. 8 Comments from Readers Mike, \We recently had Paul Gospodarczyk from DMACC present a sulfur dioxide short course to the Mississippi Valley Grape Growers Association at Stone Cliff Winery in Dubuque. I was surprised at the amount of information that Paul had and the in-depth presentation that he had. If you could spread the word about his wonderful presentation, I believe it would be beneficial to any wine or grape organization. Brad Johnson also presented a mystery shopper program of what people are looking for and getting out of their experiences with Iowa wineries. This was also a wonderful presentation that could help any winery. They were both very helpful and knowledgeable about their topics and I would love to see them giving more presentations around the state. Cheers~ Ian Bonnette, President Mississippi Valley Grape Growers Association Note: You can view Both Paul s and Brad s presentations Online here: Quotes of the Week While it's no new concept in the valleys of Napa or Sonoma, the idea of wine tourism is starting to take root across the globe. From France to Germany and Australia to Chile, people are increasingly booking passage based less on the destination itself than on the wine produced in that destination. --- Can Wine Tourism Save Travel, by Robert P. Farmer, Wine Country.com: "We had a great time in Iowa and we really appreciate the hospitality of the Iowa Wine Growers Association. You guys put-on a super meeting and the Iowa Wine industry is doing amazing things because of the programs you provide them." Liz & Chris Stamp Lakewood Vineyards Watkins Glen, NY Note: Both Liz and Chris each gave two presentations at the 2009 Iowa Wine Growers Conference held March 20 & 21. I enjoyed reading about the electric pruners being used at Tassel Ridge Winery in Wine Grower News #77. I have a pair of these electric pruners that I use in my vineyard. They really do save me time. I have learned to take breaks to help keep me focused and not daydream while pruning. Why? My electric pruners can slice through galvanized high tensile wire like butter!
