3 Introduction Based out of Denver, Colorado, Magellan Wine Imports is one of the leading importers focused on the wines of Germany, Austria and Northern Italy. We represent some of the most critically acclaimed wineries from these wine regions, many of which are new to the American market. We believe that wines from these regions are underrepresented in the US market and offer one of the best price/quality opportunities in wine today. Our philosophy is to import handcrafted wines from family-owned wineries where there is a tradition of quality over quantity and the wines express a unique sense of place. From Germany, we naturally import many Rieslings, but we are bullish on the more modern styles that are dry or off-dry. We represent Germany s top red wine estate, Knipser, which as garnered many 94 point ratings for their Pinot Noirs in publications such as Stephan Tanzer s International Wine Cellar. From Austria, we import stunning Gruner Veltliners and Rieslings from the best appellations: Wachau, Weinviertel and the Wagram. Magellan has also been an early pioneer with the importation of Austrian red wines. We import reds from indigenous Austria grapes such as Zweigelt, Blaufrankisch and St. Laurent, as well as International-style cuvees from these grapes blended with Cabernet and Merlot. From Northern Italy, we focus on whites that show their Germanic heritage, such as Gewurztraminer and Muller Thurgau and international varietals Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Blanc. From this region, we also import wonderful Pinot Neros, Lagreins, Marzeminos, Enantios, Valpolicellas and Amarones. In addition to importing family estates, Magellan has developed and marketed two successful value brands from Germany and Italy. From Germany, Magellan has created the Flying Ace brand, which includes an off-dry style Riesling, a Riesling Kabinett and a Riesling Spatlese that are all line-priced. From Italy, Magellan developed the Bella Costa brand. The Bella Costa brand includes three wines: a Pinot Grigio with a wonderful, rich fruit profile, a Prosecco that is extra dry with a very appealing creamy texture, and a Chianti with vibrant fruit and well integrated tannins. Too many German wines have stogy, hard to pronounce, somewhat intimidating labels, which subsequently get passed up on crowded retail wine shelves, as well as the all important restaurant wine lists. The simple, fun, but iconic Flying Ace label symbolizes a higher level of Riesling, in a non intimidating fashion. More than just the label, Flying Ace stands out from the cadre of cheap, overly sweet white wine brands from Germany because of its superior quality, at very competitive prices! At $9.99 to $11.99 SRP, no other Riesling brand can offer 100% Riesling, sourced from single vineyards, with complex layers of fruit and acidity. The half dry, Kabinett and Spatlese skus are all correct in their sweetness, and in their varietal characteristics. 6 Clüsserath-Weiler Mosel, Germany G VC Riesling Sekt Sekt is the German name for all sparking wines. The VC is 100% Riesling produced in a dry brut style. This sparkler is an example of winzersekt, which is small production sparkling wine produced by top German estates using the traditional champagne method. 200 cases produced. 12% Alc. 18 grams RS/L, 7 grams acidity. Pack Size G Riesling Trocken Qba This Trocken Riesling shows why Clüsserath-Weiler is renowned in the Mosel for making the most superb, complex, terroir-driven dry Rieslings in the valley. The wine smells of wet stones, orange peel and lemony citrus. On the palate, flavors of grapefruit, tangerine and green apple mingle with the wines minerally backbone. The Clüsserath-Weiler estate is located along the middle Mosel in town of Trittenheim. The vines are 109 years old. Wine Advocate wrote of this wine, A wine of extraordinary concentration, complexity and cellar potential. Aromas of muskmelon, grapefruit and purple plum lead into a glossy, rich yet bright palate. Terrifically slatesaturated, shimmering in its diverse citrus and mineral interplay, piquant, and bittersweetly nutty, this offers a depth, clarity, and finishing length that feel like a plummet from the height of the Farhfels down into the Mosel. This classic Spätlese has aromas of tangerine and flowers. 8 G Schmitges Mosel, Germany Rivaner Dry Rivaner is another name for the grape Muller-Thurgau. Traditionally, this grape has been used to make simple, fruity wines. However, when the wine is fermented dry, it takes on a whole different personality and is called Rivaner. Wine Enthusiast wrote of the Schmitges Rivaner, It s a full-bodied, robust wine with intense stone fruit and melon flavors, underscored by citrus and spice notes that linger delicately on the finish. 2,500 cases produced. 12.5% Alc. 7.5 grams RS/L, 6.5 grams acidity. Established in 1744 by the Schmitges family. The estate owns vineyards in the famous Erdener Treppchen and Erdener Prälat sites. G Grey Slate (Grauschiefer) Riesling Trocken Grauschiefer is the German name for grey slate from which the wine hails. This dry Riesling has incredible power for the Mosel, with alcohol at 13%. This wine offers plenty of ripe fruit, but finishes dry. A smoky, leesy character on the nose wraps easily around a core of pineapple and peach fruit. The half-dry style always appeals to a broad cross-section of Riesling drinkers. There is plenty of fruit, but the wine is not sweet. Apple and pineapple on the nose, bolstered by scents of spring flowers. But because the climate keeps getting warmer, Schmitges was forced to find another site in order to make the classic style Mosel kabinett. This Kabinett comes from a cooler vineyard that has red slate soil, hence the German name vom Roten Schiefer (from red slate). 10 G G Caspari-Kappel Mosel, Germany Riesling Hochsgewachs Trocken This is a cuvee of Rieslings from three different vineyards. The Hochsgewachs is dry Riesling has intense slatey minerality from the blue slate vineyards combined with bright orchard fruits. 1,333 cases produced. 12.5% Alc. 8 grams RS/L. 6.8 grams acidity. Riesling Hochsgewachs Feinherb The Feinherb is the half-dry version of the Hochsgewachs Riesling. The wine is made from the same three blue slate vineyards. Taste the two wines side-by-side and compare how ripeness levels impact the variety of fruit flavors in the wine. This wine shows more Fuji apple and pear flavors with pink grapefruit on the finish. 416 cases produced. 12% Alc. 15 grams RS/L. 6.7 grams acidity. Caspari is in the romantic wine village of Enkirch on the Mosel. The winery was established nearly 600 years ago by Caspar of Mönchhof, one of the Earls on Sponheim. He was also responsible for planting the vineyards at Mönchhof. Today, the winery is still owned at operated by the Caspari family. G Riesling Hochsgewachs Süss For customers looking for a QBA that drinks like a Spatlese, you have to try this Riesling. 40% of the grapes for this wine were infected with botrytis. This wine has wonderful ripe peach and lemony citrus flavors with honeyed tones from the botrytis. 11 G Rosch Mosel, Germany Riesling Halbtrocken Leiwener Klostergarten This wine is an example of what wonderfully balanced halfdry Riesling should be. Orchard fruits of apple and pear combine with citrus on the palate. The taste at the front and mid-palate is fruity, but the finish is dry without a hint of sweetness. 666 cases produced. 11.5% Alc. 16 grams RS/L. 7.4 grams acidity. G Riesling JR Junior The JR is the flagship dry Riesling from the estate. Crisp apples and pears combine with tangerine and citrus. The texture and finish has intense minerality. With 10 grams of residual sugar, the wine has just enough fruitiness while keeping the body of the wine light on the palate. 1,000 cases produced. 11.5% Alc grams RS/L. 7.5 grams acidity. Rosch is considered one of the blue-chip wine estates from the Mosel. In Germany, there are only 28 estates that get the highest ranking (5 stars) from Germany s top Critic Gerhard Eichelmann. Rosch is one of the 28 and one of only six 5 star estates in the Mosel. G Riesling Kabinett Leiwener Klostergarten The Kabinett style of Riesling is what made the Mosel famous. A classic style Kabinett should have juicy fruit flavors, light in body and alcohol, and a crisp, clean finish. 12 Josef Drathen Wein und Sektkellerei Mosel, Germany G Dornfelder Trocken Dornfelder produces reds with deep bluish-purple color. On the nose a bit floral with dark berry aromas. On the palate, the texture is velvety with blackberry and dark cherry flavors. The trocken is a dry Dornfelder. 2,500 cases produced. 12% Alc. 6.2 grams RS/L. 4.5 grams acidity. G Dornfelder Lieblich Dornfelder produces reds with deep bluish-purple color. On the nose a bit floral with dark berry aromas. On the palate, the texture is velvety with blackberry and dark cherry flavors. The Süss is a sweet Dornfelder. 2,500 cases produced 10% Alc. 43 grams RS/L. 4.8 grams acidity. Coming from Josef Drathen, we have three different Dornfelders. We have a dry Dornfelder. We have an off-dry Dornfelder and we even have a sweet Dornfelder. Dornfelder is a German red grape that is a crossing of two other German red varietals: Helfensteiner and Heroldrebe. Next to Pinot Noir, Dornfelder is the second most planted red grape in Germany. 13 G Prinz Rheingau, Germany Rheingau Riesling Trocken From vineyards above the Rhein River comes this wonderful dry Riesling at an affordable price! Flowers on the nose. Bright apples and pears on the palate with well-balanced acidity. Refreshing and very food friendly cases produced. 12.5% Alc. 7.8 grams RS/L. 7.8 grams acidity. G Riesling Kabinett Hallgartner Jungfer Bursting with fruit: ripe peaches and apples with good acidity for a good zippy finish. Fantastic! 333 cases produced. 8% Alc. 82 grams RS/L. 8.3 grams acidity. Fred Prinz is one of the most respected and admired winemakers in the Rheingau. In the United States, he has achieved great recognition from all the major wine journals and is annually reviewed by Wine Advocate. G Riesling Spatlese Hallgartner Jungfer On the nose, lemon custard with a little botrytis on the edges. Fully ripe peaches, apricots and golden delicious apples on the palate. 14 Knipser Pfalz, Germany G Rosé Clarette A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. Redolent in fresh white peaches, red berries & cherries. Multi-layered & very complex. G Riesling This Riesling is a rarity for Knipser as the house style for Riesling is dry. He ages his Pinot in French, American and Russian oak barriques. The style is a bit Burgundy, a bit California, but with roots firmly planted in Germany s Pinot traditions. Chardonnay Eiswein 2007 A Chardonnay Eiswein is fairly uncommon. In a blind tasting, this Eiswein won the contract with Lufthansa airlines to provide a dessert wine for the first class cabin. 20 G Hex Vom Dasenstein Baden, Germany Amour Pinot Noir Amour, French for Love, is a semi-sweet red made from 100% Pinot Noir. There is a market for sweet Red wines, but very little product available. We found this fruity Pinot Noir last year and fell in love with it. It is fruity, but not overly sweet. The wine has wonderful cherry and berry flavors, a velvety texture and a soft finish. This is the perfect beginner wine for customers just getting into reds. 833 cases produced. 10% Alc. 50 grams RS/L. Acidity 5.5 grams. Pack Size G Blanc de Noir (white Pinot Noir) The Blanc de Noir is a still white Pinot Noir made by not allowing the skins to come in contact with the juice. The wine is not like any other white wine. Hex vom Dasenstein is a large cooperative from the Baden region of southern Germany in the village of Kappelrodeck. All the growers in this village cultivate grapes for the cooperative. The production is about 98% pinot noir. G Pinot Noir QBA in the Witch bottle The hand-painted Witch bottle commemorates the story of the Witch of Dasenstein, from which the winery takes its name. This Pinot Noir has Old World qualities of forest floor and minerality on the nose. On the palate the wine has dark cherry fruit, plum and a robust tannic structure. 1,250 cases produced. 13% Alc. 1 grams RS/L. The name Hex vom Dasenstein means the witch of Dasenstein in German. The name comes from a local story about the daughter of the town s nobleman. In 1356AD, she had an affair with a commoner from the village. When her father found out, he kicked her out of the castle. The daughter spent the rest of her life living in a cave in the side of a gigantic rock (the Dasenstein) that sits in the middle of one of the vineyards. The locals called her the Hex vom Dasenstein. 23 A Roeno Valpolicella, Italy Enantio Enantio is a wild grape native to Trentino. In the first century AD, the Roman wine writer Plinio wrote about this grape. It was rediscovered again in the 20 th century. Roeno s Enantio is a big red with a great tannic structure. On the palate the wine has dark fruits of berries, cassis and spice. The finish is long. I tasted this wine against a well-known California Cabernet and the Enantio had more power and complexity. 2,083 cases produced. 14% Alc. 2 grams RS/L. 6 grams acidity. A Riesling 2009 An Italian Riesling now you don t see that everyday. This is the first vintage for Cantina Roeno and they asked their friend and German winemaker, Andreas Bender to provide some of his expertise with Riesling in a consulting basis. As a first vintage, this Riesling turned out very week. It show all the typical Riesling characteristics, but is a bit richer and fuller on the palate from its German cousins. 32 Brewery Overview Schweinsbräu beer comes from the organic farm of Herrmannsdorf, which is located on the outskirts of Munich in the beautiful Bavarian countryside. Herrmannsdorf is the vision of Karl Ludwig Schweisfurth, who is one of the pioneers of organic, sustainable agriculture. Mr. Schweisfurth owned the largest, industrial meatpacking corporation in Europe, but in 1984 he turned his back on his old life, sold the company, and started the Herrmannsdorf farm. At Herrmannsdorf, Mr. Schweisfurth has been able to realize his vision of raising livestock with a respect for life of the animal and the dignity of the workers. B001 B002 B003 Schweinsbrau Beer Bavaria, Germany Beer Description Gold - The Gold is a traditional Munich-style Helles beer, which is a pale colored lager that is a cousin to Czech pilsners. Grainy malt character, with smooth grassy butter in the mouth. The hops give it a balanced bitter-lemon cleanliness that lasts through to the end. Finish is refreshing and slightly vanilla, leading to a long hoppy, malty but clean aftertaste. A superb and quaffable beer for those hot summer afternoons. 500ML bottles. Weisse - A traditional hefeweizen wheat beer, but the fermentation happens in the bottle instead of a tank. The result is a fresher, more lively hefeweizen. The liquid is cloudy, the colour is pale brown. The low head is yellowish. On the nose, aromas of banana candy, earth, wheat sourness and green bananas. On the palate, sweet notes of fruit candy. Some dry mineral flavours. Roasted hints of toffee. The aftertaste is balanced with some yeasty flavors. Green bananas on the finish. 500ML bottles Dunkel - The dunkel is a tradtional dark lager typical to Bavaria. This beer is dark brown in colour with reddish highlights. Nose is slightly earthy. Taste is immediately honeyed and malty, perfumy with a hit of almond and cherry.
