1 DAYLESFORD AND THE MACEDON RANGES A tasty little pocket guide
2 Welcome Welcome to and the Macedon Ranges. If you are up for an excellent food and wine adventure, then this is the place for you. Join them at cooking classes, cellar doors, restaurants and cafés, markets, bakeries, pubs and farmyards. They ll tell you about their craft or product; and help you make your choice from their beautiful seasonal produce or diverse range of perfect drops. Our pristine region, with its fertile volcanic soil, abundant mineral springs and strongly felt seasons, provides the perfect canvas for small artisan farms. Heirloom lost fruit and vegetable varieties, rare breed livestock and the pursuit of sustainable best practices, biodynamics and organics are strong features of this landscape. Respect for our environment runs deep in our veins. The viability of future harvests in years to come is as important as what we are picking today. MEET THE LOCALS If you re on a shopping expedition watch out for A-frames and honour boxes selling everything from berries and chestnuts, to potatoes and free-range eggs. Produce stores offer you locally pressed olive oil, smallgoods, preserves, yoghurt, cheese and locally foraged mushrooms. Fresh trout, locally farmed Murray Cod, ethically raised pork, lamb and beef feature on the local tables of award winning, dedicated chefs. Paired with local beers, ciders and high quality cool climate wines, every eating experience sings the praises of the efforts of our passionate local community. 5 COOL CLIMATE DROPS Our cool to cold climate region produces small quantities of exceptionally high quality wines. Boasting over 50 mostly owner operated wineries, chances are it will be the winemaker pouring your tasting at the cellar door or serving some delicious local nibbles. In Sunbury, the closest wine growing region to Melbourne s CBD, you ll enjoy signature Shiraz but also great Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Across the Macedon Ranges, award winning sparkling wines (Macedon), Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, the traditional Bordeaux varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and peppery cold climate Shiraz are produced. Recent plantings of Nebbiolo, Lagrein, Pinot Gris and Prosecco reflect the region s Swiss-Italian heritage. Around, Creswick and Clunes you ll find subtly fragrant Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, sparkling wine, Riesling and some Shiraz. Check out macedonrangeswine.com.au or to plot your own exploration. Or, make it easy to enjoy a tipple or several - book with Mike s Wine Tours, Wine Tours Victoria or Wine Tours. For a great beer, select from boutique brews at Holgate Brewhouse in, the Tooborac Hotel and Brewery or look out for the Dolphin brewery brand at farmer s markets. Hand crafted ciders are available at the Cidery where 1500 organic apple trees bear heirloom varieties of Somerset cider apples. Bacchus Hill Winery also offers excellent local ciders. And at Herbal Lore, an exquisitely bottled range of liqueurs are created using principles that blend the craft of cooperage with the art of winemaking. Our region is also home to 85 per cent of Australia s naturally occurring mineral springs. Bring a container to fill and take home with you. Bottled locally sourced mineral water is also available from the and Hepburn Mineral Springs Company. Wherever you travel throughout our region you ll be sure to discover your own perfect drop. 6 FOODIE TOWNS Great regional food and wine Journey to where the enduring presence of the multi-award winning Lake House has ensured a long legacy as the gourmet heart of the region. Among her many awards, executive chef and hotelier Alla Wolf-Tasker has been named a Legend by The Age Good Food Guide. Never one to rest on her laurels, however, Lake House continues, in her words, to be a work in progress delivering contemporary menus and stellar service. eateries such as Mercato s, Sault, Kazuki s, Jimmy s Bar, Farmer s Arms and the Hotel fly the flag for quality and local produce and capture the attention of travellers with their food savviness. While Wombat Hill House, Cliffy s and Breakfast and Beer deliver great food in spades in charming and quirky locations. In neighbouring Hepburn Springs be spoilt for choice with the likes of Reubens, The Argus, Darmagi, Cosy Corner or indulge in a high tea at Grange Bellinzona. The inspirational chefs and cooks of continue to strengthen its reputation as a significant foodie destination. Annie Smithers Bistrot, Mr Carsisi, Flouch s, the Royal George and Pizza Verde shouldn t be missed while Monsieur Pierre and Piper Street Food Company produce delicious fare worthy of a detour and perfect for your picnic in the region. Following the success of her hatted restaurant in, Annie Smithers has taken her French inspired cooking to Trentham with the opening of du Fermier. Seasonal surprises, mostly sourced from Annie s garden, make up the farmhouse du jour menu. Like, Trentham s reputation in the gourmet stakes is growing and here you can enjoy outstanding sourdough bread from Red Beard Historic Bakery or choose from a delicious range of offerings at the Cosmopolitan Hotel or Coliban Food Store. Restaurants, local cafes, funky bars, trattoria, bakeries and pubs are located throughout the region. The Village Larder and Café Colenso (), Soltan Pepper (Romsey and Sunbury), Bacchus Hill Winery (Bacchus Marsh), Olive Jones and Sitka (Macedon), Grange Cleveland (Lancefield) and Le Pêche Gourmand (Creswick) are others on an ever expanding list. Our best kept secret Black gold lays nestled in the flats and the hills of our region. An emerging truffle industry has developed here and together with it, Aussie Truffle Dogs - an Australian business first. Georgie Patterson breeds and trains truffle dogs for the Australian truffle industry and helps folk who have plantings of sporeinoculated hazelnut and oak trees, to find their gold of the black and very pungent variety. Delicious local lamb 11 Save room for the fabulous desserts!
7 PUBS GALORE! Our region is home to a burgeoning pub scene where the warmth of the welcome is second to none. Put this together with some clever cooks, a dedication to local produce and a great range of wines, beers and ciders and you ve got a truly winning combination. Many are well known but plenty of others are secret locals destinations and worth seeking out for their authentic local colour and charm. The American Hotel in Creswick has been serving cold beers and great meals since the 1850s. In nearby Smeaton, the Cumberland Hotel is great for a quiet ale, a friendly chat with the locals and perhaps a purchase of some spuds from the long-term potato farming owners. Tiny Lyonville is the unlikely spot you will find the cosy, eclectic and eccentric Radio Springs Hotel. Look out for live music offerings here. In neighbouring East Trentham, The Pig and Whistle or downtown there are vibrant pubs such as The Albion in Mollison Street, offering great pub meals. High on the Mount, the recently reopened Mount Macedon Hotel has rapidly become a favourite for locals and visitors alike. But we ve only scratched the surface, there s plenty more out there for you to discover. The Plough in Myrniong and The Wallace Hotel are havens for local food. The Old Hepburn is a sure bet for good pub fare and some local bands. Great local brew Swing by for seasonal specialties Come in and meet the locals 13
