5 Sustainably Farmed All of wineries in the Vino del Sol portfolio are sustainably farmed. This means the wines are created in an environmentally-conscious and socially-friendly way, and that the vineyards can continue to produce grapes indefinitely. Below are some examples of how our vineyards are sustainably farmed: The People and Business All of the Vino del Sol wineries are Argentine-owned, and valuable assets to the local community. The wineries proudly invest in the long-term employment and care of their workers. The VdS wineries are also all family operations, with a shared multi-generational vision for a sustainable long-term business. The Land Argentina's grape growing regions are blessed with a dry, warm, and high-altitude climate. This is the perfect natural growing condition for grapes, as non-organic pesticides and fungicides are not needed. The age of the vines (many of the Vino del Sol vineyards are over 90 years old) speaks to the inherent health of the ecosystem. Our wineries go the extra mile to protect the soil in a sustainable manner: for example, Tapiz & Zolo create their compost out of the discarded grape skins and solid, and use natural cover crops for added nutrients. Ksana, Lamadrid and Verum use high density plantings to naturally balance the cluster-per-vine production. Tapiz & Zolo own an organically-certified vineyard in Tupungato ( Spirit of the Andes. ) The Water All of the water used in vineyard irrigation comes from naturally-recurring Andes snow-melt. In Mendoza this sustainability is ensured by the Provincial Water Law and administered by the Departamento General de Irrigación, a mixed organization in which the farming community represents themselves in a Farmer s Council. The final distribution of the assigned volume to each vineyard is the responsibility of the famous Tomero. Altocedro and Camino del Inca and the other wineries utilize computer-controlled drip irrigation to further conserve water. Continued Education Given the long-term environmental and business vision of the Vino del Sol wineries, it is not surprising they invest more than most in research and the education of their workers. 8 LAMADRID Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza Great Value Winery to Look For -Robert Parker The Lamadrid winery is owned by Guillermo García Lamadrid, and the manager and winemaker is Héctor Durigutti. Lamadrid owns three vineyards in Agrelo: Finca La Matilde (planted 1929), Finca Lamadrid (planted 1973), and Finca La Suiza (planted 2004). Each wine comes from one of these Agrelo single vineyards and only indigenous yeasts are used. The remodeled winery combines a unique mix of traditional and cutting-edge winemaking. The district of Agrelo, in the department of Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza, is called the land of the Malbec. This is one of the oldest and most premier growing regions in Argentina. Lamadrid Cabernet Franc Single Vineyard Reserva We strive for an Agrelo terroir-driven Cabernet Franc that is complex with very concentrated fruit. 100% La Suiza vineyard. Malolactic fermentation in the oak, and aged 14 months in 50% first use and 50% second use French oak barrels. Lamadrid Malbec Gran Reserva 94 points ('06), The Wine Advocate: The 2006 Malbec Gran Reserva was sourced from a single estate vineyard with 81-yearold vines. It was fermented with native yeasts with malolactic in barrel followed by 16 months of aging in new French oak. Purple in color with a fabulous perfume of exotic spices, incense, balsamic, lavender, black cherry, and truffle, on the palate it is already complex with superior depth, concentration, and balance. Layered, plush, and hedonistic, it will evolve for several more years but it will take great restraint to keep from drinking it sooner. 10 VERUM A lto Valle de Rio Negro, Patagonia Verum: True Patagonia Verum (Bodega Del Rio Elorza) is a new boutique, family winery with 45 acres of highdensity vineyards in the Alto Valle de Rio Negro, Patagonia. The winemakers are internationally renowned Alberto Antonini and the local Mariano Vignoni. Their experience and understanding of this unique Patagonian terroir, along with Marcelo Casazza's precise vineyard management, impart great personality to the wines. Verum is a shining example of the awesome winemaking potential in Patagonia. In addition to Malbec, they are also bottling Merlot, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, all of them very good. - Verum Chardonnay 90 points, Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate: The unoaked 2007 Chardonnay was made by the talented Alberto Antonini. Medium straw-colored with a slight green tint, the nose offers up poached pear, white peach, and tropical aromas leading to a creamy-textured wine with ripe flavors, lively acidity, and a lengthy, refreshing finish. 11 SPIRIT OF THE ANDES T u p u n g a t o, V a lle de Uco, Mendoza Going Green Never Tasted So Good Spirit of the Andes Malbec Made with organically-grown grapes from our estate Las Uvas vineyard in Tupungato, Valle de Uco; certified organic by the U.S.-recognized Organizción Internacional Agropecuaria (OIA). From the Ortiz family and Bodega Tapiz; the winemaker is Fabian Valenzuela and the vineyard manager Carlos Correas. 12 ALTOCEDRO L a C onsulta, Valle d e Uco, Mendoza Altocedro represents real artisanal winemaking, a boutique operation with some serious talent behind the wheel. -Wine Spectator The winery and vineyards of Altocedro are located in the premier region of La Consulta, Valle de Uco, Mendoza. Winemaker and owner Karim Mussi Saffie uses sustainable growing practices to produce limited amounts of terroirdriven wines. The vines range up to 100 years of age. All harvesting, sorting, and crushing are done in individual batches by hand. Fermentation occurs either in small cement tanks or in barrels, and the extract is done with a gravity flow system developed at the winery over 100 years ago. Altocedro has become synonymous with outstanding La Consulta wine. Altocedro Malbec La Consulta Select We strive for a La Consulta-terroir driven Malbec that is fruit-forward yet with some added complexity from the oak. Altocedro Reserva Malbec 91 points ('08), Wine Advocate, 91 points ('08), Wine Spectator: A dark, loamy style, featuring hefty cocoa and espresso notes, backed by dark roasted vanilla and mulled fig fruit. This stays focused and polished though, despite the dark profile, with a long fruit- and licorice-filled finish... one of the best efforts of the vintage. 13 CAMINO DEL INCA C a f a y a t e, Salta Experience the Best of Salta's Terroir The Southern part of the Inca civilization once ruled where Camino del Inca's estate vineyards are now located in Cafayate, Salta. Salta is in the extreme northwest of Argentina and boasts the highest vineyards in the world (6,000 feet above sea level), which results in a day-to-night temperature difference of over 50F, creating extremely concentrated and flavorful grapes. The unique terroir is high desert with poor, sandy soils, perfect for growing Tannat, Malbec, Syrah and Torrontés. The winemakerrs are Paul Hobbs and Mariano Quiroga Adamo, the vineyard manager is Marcelo Casazza, and the owners and managers are the Romero family. Salta is a vital and unique Argentine grape-growing region, and we believe Camino del Inca is the best representative of this exciting place. Camino del Inca Malbec 91 points ('09), Wilfred Wong. This Malbec beautifully expresses its Salta terroir: aromas and flavors of red fruits, plums, blackberries, and earth. It is an easydrinking wine, with sweet tannins and a long finish. Camino del Inca Torrontés This Torrontés beautifully expresses its Salta terroir: explosive aromas and flavors of tropical fruits, white flowers, and honeysuckle. Manos Negras focuses on latitude winemaking. Argentina and Chile's winemaking regions stretch 1,500 miles north to south along the Andes. Each latitude possesses a unique terroir with singular combinations of soil and temperature which are ideally suited for different varietals. Manos Negras uses the unique skills of three immigrants to Argentina- New Zealand winemakers Duncan Killiner and Jason Mabbett, and American wine educator Jeff Mausbach- as well as the renown Argentine viticulturist Alejandro Sejanovich to craft wines based on exciting terroir-varietal combinations. Likewise, we believe at the moment of tasting a wine, one experiences its vineyard's history and winemaking process. The correct combination of these is what will make a wine last in your memory forever. The Ksana wines are unfiltered; malolactic fermentation occurs in the oak; and indigenous yeasts are used to express the terroir. The vineyard is very densely planted (7,900 plants per hectare) with very low production per vine ( kg); this adds to the wines' ultra-concentration. The Ksana winery and estate 90 year-old vineyard is located in Las Compuertas, Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza. Ksana Malbec Reserva 92 points ('07), Wine Advocate: A glass-coating opaque purple color, it offers up an impressive nose of scorched earth, mineral, Asian spices, a hint of balsamic, black cherry, and black raspberry. This leads to an opulent wine with layered, spicy black fruit, excellent depth and grip, impeccable balance, and a lengthy, fruitfilled finish.
