3 COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND LIFE SCIENCES Department of Nutrition and Food Science September 24, 2010 MEMORANDUM To: COALS Graduate Program Committee Dr. David Reed Chair From: Dr. Jimmy T. Keeton Professor, Head and AgriLife Fellow RE: Nomination of Dr. Brent C. Trela for Associate Membership to the Graduate College Dr. Brent Trela is a tenure-track Assistant Professor at Texas Tech University with a joint 75% TTU and 25% Texas AgriLife Extension appointment. Dr. Trela is an enology specialist with expertise in winery design, production, management and wine research. Since his hiring in 2007, he has worked extensively with Mr. Mike Sipowicz, AgriLife Enology Extension Specialist located in Lubbock and with Dr. Susanne Talcott, Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutrition and Food Science, focusing on developing the wine industry in Texas and addressing critical problems facing the industry. Both Drs. Trela and Talcott are working jointly under a Texas Department of Agriculture grant (SB 1370) to train graduates with enology expertise to serve the growing industry and conduct research to enable wineries in Texas to produce high quality wines that are free of defects, and unique to Texas. Drs. Trela and Talcott not only have joint research projects, but each would like the ability to serve on their graduate students respective committees. I am requesting the Dr. Trela be an Associate Member of the Graduate Faculty to enable him to serve in an official capacity on graduate committees of students receiving advanced degrees at Texas A&M University. Under this type of membership he could serve as co-chair or member of a committee, but not chair. Currently, he has an active research program and is a member of the Graduate Faculty of Texas Tech University. I would be pleased to answer any questions that you might have regarding the nomination of Dr. Brent Trela to the Graduate Faculty at Texas A&M University. 122 Kleberg Center Phone: Fax: MS 2253 College Station, TX Web:

21 SUMMARY OF TEACHING ACTIVITIES AND EFFECTIVENESS CANDIDATE S SUMMARY OF TEACHING EFFECTIVENESS: (Narrative - one page maximum; This should be a summary statement of the accomplishments, impact, and effectiveness of the candidate s teaching) Two years into developing a new University program in Enology with Teaching, research and extension duties where there previously was not a program or curriculum before, the program is off to a solid start. I am currently developing new academic and Extension course curriculum to introduce wines, wine business, winemaking, and the science, processing, quality control and analysis of winemaking to students, Texas winemakers and future winemakers for the improvement of the whole Texas wine industry. Since joining TTU in September 2007, I have finished creating 2 new courses while still developing three additional new courses, each course from scratch. While the student evaluation are lower than my previous class evaluations at UC Davis (last 5 courses average of 4.6 based on 200 students across all questions), I am confident they will significantly improve with subsequent teaching of the courses. These are new courses in a new specialization area, enrollment numbers are expected to increase with subsequent course offerings. Naturally, I endeavor for students to learn the fundamental content of the courses I develop and teach; however, I also try to go beyond that to foster critical thinking and problem solving ability, and to facilitate the acquisition of life-long learning skills. The whole of this educational process is intended to orient and prepare the students to be knowledgeable, adaptable, and able to function effectively in the winemaking field and greater community. My teaching philosophy, like the subjects I teach, are works in progress and I am continually in the process of evaluating the importance and relevance of the content, the effectiveness of my methods, and the needs of the students as well as the wider world in which they will contribute their knowledge and skills. 23 SUMMARY OF RESEARCH/CREATIVE ACTIVITIES AND EFFECTIVENESS CANDIDATE S SUMMARY OF RESEARCH EFFECTIVENESS (Narrative one page maximum; This should be a summary statement of the accomplishments, impact, and effectiveness of the candidate s research) Two years into developing a new University program in Enology with Teaching, research and extension duties where there previously was not a program or curriculum before, the program is off to a solid start. During the past two years developing this program, I have completed one research project that resulted in 1 peer reviewed publication and have initiated four new research projects with three graduate students, 1 post doc, and 1 undergraduate research assistant. These projects are yielding results and all four projects were recently accepted for poster presentation at the 2010 American Society for Enology and Viticulture Annual Conference. All four projects are expected to yield 4-6 peer reviewed journal articles within 1-2 years. As a new program in a less well known region for enology, it was a challenge at first to attract graduate students. Initially, I hired two senior undergraduate students to assist me in the lab, but by the start of the second year I was able to secure 2 Ph.D. and 1 M.S. students- since then the research progress has been steady and the work recognized regionally and internationally through invited lectures and symposiums. My research is currently focused on improving wine quality through better understanding of wine oxidation processes, phenolics and antioxidants, and wine stabilization chemistry while developing improved wine treatment methods for common industry wide and regional wine problems. During this time, I have provided leadership to Texas A&M Agrilife Extension activities in enology which include leading the development and coordination of effective individual and multi-disciplinary team efforts in educational and applied enology research programs. These programs aim to enhance the ability of Texas wine and grape growers to add value to their production through improved processing methodology and technology. The intent is to meet the needs of Texas winemakers and leverage Texas viticulture and enology conditions to create unique products that are competitive nationally and internationally. Extension Workshops and Seminars To immediately address priority topics or problems identified in consultation with winemakers in each region, numerous short courses and workshops on such topics as sanitation in the winery and quality control and analytical and sensory analyses of wines, were developed and offered at participating wineries during in three locations across Texas. These locations coincide with the principle grape growing and winemaking regions and include the following: Texas Hill Country, Fredericksburg; North Texas, Dallas/Fort Worth. These have been well received by industry and to date there have been over 120 participants at these workshops. Numerous invited lectures and seminars have been presented locally and regionally for example, at the Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association Annual meetings, Newsom Grape Day, the Annual Midwest Grape & Wine Conference, the Texas Viticulture & Enology Research Symposium, as well as creating and disseminating extension publications and guides for the industry. During the previous two years we developed a regional consortium and outreach program in enology at the University and Extension levels. This was further complemented with a comprehensive web site to serve both researchers in enology and winery personnel. This included the development and launch in December 2009 of the Texas Enology Network website ( Currently we have 258 newsletter users and the site has received more than 2600 hits. The creation of a South West/Midwest regional enology virtual institute was also initiated to network other institutions that teach and do extension work or conduct research 21
