2016 SELECTION PANEL Buyers at this year s Nederburg Auction can be confident in the knowledge that the 2016 wine selection has been curated by an expert panel of international industry leaders. This year s group of eight judges has a truly global footprint and exceptional professional experience, consisting of six Masters of Wine (MW), the highest level of professional knowledge in the industry. Tim Atkin MW Tim Atkin MW is a UK wine journalist with an international following. He writes for Woman and Home, The World of Fine Wine, Gourmet Traveller Wine, Jamie Magazine, Fine Drink Magazine (China) and The Economist s Intelligent Life and appears regularly as a wine expert on BBC One s Saturday Kitchen. His website timatkin.com is widely read, quoted and retweeted. He has a second career as a photographer and his photos have been published in The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph and the World of Fine Wine and exhibited in London, Provence, Colombia, Poland and Lebanon. Tim writes an annual report on the South African wine scene, including his much debated South African Wine Classification. Roland Peens Studying economics at the University of Stellenbosch meant that wine surrounded Roland. He gave in to its lures and as soon as he had finished his degree, he found his way into the industry. Roland worked in wine marketing, retail, exports and as a sommelier before he found his way to Wine Cellar one of South Africa s foremost importers and retailers of fine wines. He is a partner in Wine Cellar and has been the director since You will find Roland at most of South Africa s top wine events, tasting, learning, and exploring the world of wine, forever expanding his palate. He has extensive insight into the wine world both local and foreign. Studying for a Master of Wine qualification for five years has helped, and perhaps one day we ll see the big MW after his name. When he isn t popping corks you ll find Roland on one of the many trails of the beautiful Cape mountains, or kite boarding in the cold Atlantic waters. Greg Sherwood MW While Greg personally expresses no firm wine drinking preferences other than for "well-made wines", his knowledge and expertise in the field of South African wines in particular are considerable

Born in Pretoria, the son of a career diplomat, Greg spent his first 21 years travelling the globe with his parents. All the related wining and dining, in the line of duty, is where he first realised his passion for fine wine. Greg began his working career as a commodity trader. During this time, he rediscovered his passion for the wine trade and passed his Diploma at the Cape Wine Academy in Johannesburg in A move back to Europe in mid-2000 to pursue a wine career in London, "the centre of the world fine wine trade", according to Greg, allowed him to work with and amongst some of the great wine personalities of the modern era. As Marketing Manager for fine wines from 2000 to 2006, and more recently Senior Wine Buyer for fine wines at Handford Wines in South Kensington, London, Greg, along with Handford Wines owner James Handford MW, has had the opportunity daily to buy, sell and taste some of the most finely crafted and sought-after wines in the world. Cathy van Zyl MW As a B. Comm graduate from the University of Witwatersrand, Cathy's first 'real' job was writing press releases for banks, units trusts and auditing firms having been hired because her then-boss was adamant she'd "rather teach someone who understands finance to write than teach someone who knows how to write about finance". Discovering she was good at the writing part, and enjoyed it, she then spent several years as a journalist and editor in the trade publication sector before starting her own small public relations consultancy in Her wine journey began on a bicycle when she asked her husband to ride the country's famed Argus Cycle Tour with her; he agreed but the quid pro quo was that she attend a wine course with him. She has since notched up 21 Cycle Tours and gone on to become the first South African to successfully pass the Master of Wine examinations while living on the tip of Africa. Cathy judges locally and internationally, is the chair of the Institute of Masters of Wine's education committee, and occasionally contributes to wine journals and websites around the world, but spends most of her wine-time as the associate editor of Platter's South African Wine Guide. Andreas Larsson Andreas Larsson was born in Stockholm, Sweden in He has a background as a chef, musician and later in life, caught the wine bug and devoted most of his time to studying the virtues of the beautiful nectar. He made a successful career as a sommelier winning the Best Sommelier of Sweden in 2001, 2002, the Nordic Championship in 2002, Best Sommelier of Europe in 2004 and finally fulfilling his dream of becoming the Best Sommelier in the World in 2007 a title only held by 14 people in the world. After graduating from sommelier school he spent a great deal of time travelling the classic wine regions while working in fine restaurants and preparing for the competitions. I didn't have a single day off during seven years, he says about this intense but rewarding time. Since 2006 he has held the position of wine director of restaurant PM & Vänner in Sweden, boasting one of the great cellars of Europe with more than 3600 wines from around the globe. He's also highly active as a consultant, speaker and teacher around the globe, being fluent in several languages and having a thirst for travel and discovering new places. Richard Kershaw MW Born and raised in Sheffield in the UK, Richard studied in London. Once qualified, he worked as a chef before moving to the wine trade. Richard acquired a basic winemaking diploma by correspondence and travelled as a cellar-hand to various countries USA, Chile, France, Germany, Hungary and finally South Africa in Richard became Assistant Winemaker at Mulderbosch, Winemaker at Nelson Estate in Paarl for two seasons before becoming Cellarmaster at Kanu in 2003, and then as Group Winemaker of both Mulderbosch and Kanu in late In 2011 he left to pursue his dream of making his own wine in Elgin, South Africa. In the same year Richard passed his International (British) Master of Wine and became the second resident South African Master of Wine. Justin Knock MW A career in science beckoned Justin after completing degrees in Industrial Chemistry and Food Science, but a tasting of 1996 Grosset Riesling and 1980 Grange with his polymers professor and an MW in Sydney in 1997 led Justin to winemaking instead. A vintage at d'arenberg in 1999 cemented his move but it was under the guidance of Philip Shaw at Rosemount where his knowledge blossomed. Over the next five years he worked vintages in France, the Hunter Valley and Margaret River and ran winemaking trials and research for the Southcorp group of wineries. From 2004 to 2007 Justin was the European-based winemaker for Southcorp/ Foster's, drawing on his experiences to deliver technical, educational and public relations expertise and training across the UK, Middle East and Europe. In 2008 he founded a boutique wine brand in the Yarra Valley, a joint venture he continues today, and made wine in Spain. He can be found grinning broadly when travelling, watching the Wallabies wallop England, drinking white Burgundy or eating tapas. Kenichi Ohashi MW Kenichi Ohashi is a wine and sake expert based in Tokyo, Japan. Born in Tochigi Prefecture, he is the third generation owner of Yamajin Co., Ltd., a distribution company specialising in wine, sake and local spirits. He also has his own consultancy company, Red Bridge Co., Ltd. and is director of Somersault Co., Ltd., the biggest business group of liquor retailers in Japan. A champion of global sake promotion, Ken is Sake Chairman of the International Wine Challenge. He is a Sake Expert Assessor, the highest qualification of the National Research Institute of Brewing Japan, and holds the title of Master of Sake from the Sake Service Institute

THE NEDERBURG AUCTION Once a year, over two days during the month of September, Nederburg winery in Paarl becomes the focal point of the South African fine wine business. 11 AUCTION 2016: HERITAGE Now in its 42nd year, the Nederburg Auction has a long, proud history as the country's leading platform for the sale of rare, icon South African wines, making its 2016 theme especially fitting. This year s auction puts the spotlight on Heritage. South Africa has a long, illustrious history of winemaking and it is to this inheritance, passed down through generations, that we look as we showcase a collection of the industry s finest wines on the 16th & 17th September. But, we cannot merely lean on lessons learned and successes celebrated if we are to continue producing icon wines that keep South Africa firmly on the world wine map. For this, we must fuse the very best of the old with the discoveries of the new; the legacy of the past with the innovation and winemaking practices of the present. Together, this blending of past and present will forge the iconic wines still to come those with long-term ageing potential that will chart their own course and in time become tomorrow s tradition. This year s focus on Heritage, which ties seamlessly into the Auction s commitment of Inspiring tomorrow s legacy today, is beautifully captured through the symbolism of the rings of a tree. The wood rings, which symbolise growth, capture the essence of the Nederburg Auction s heritage and its aim to help build South Africa s wine heroes of the future, while protecting the best of our winemaking past. We invite you, as our special guest, to invest in excellence by making these Nederburg Auction wines your own and ensuring that South Africa s rich wine heritage continues well beyond the here and now. Today s Innovation is Tomorrow s Tradition - Richard Kershaw MW 20 21

Our wine heritage an evolution. Just as wood rings symbolise growth, so can the origins and development of South Africa's wine history be traced, etched over one another to create a unique picture that captures our heritage The first Cape Wine exhibition was held in Cape Town and attracted wine media and buyers from across the country and around the globe The next 3 decades saw South African wines boycotted due to Apartheid the first Nederburg Auction took place with five participating wineries and a total of 15 wines on offer Nelson Mandela was released from prison, impacting stro ngly on the South African wine industry and its acceptability in the international arena Professor old successfully cross-pollinated Pinot Noir with Hermitage (Cinsaut) to develop South Africa s own grape variety, Pinotage 1918 creation of the Ko-operatieve Wijnbouwers Vereniging van Zuid-Afrika Beperkt (KWV) brought stability to the industry 1886, the disease phylloxera was discovered at the Cape. A quarter of the vineyards were destroyed, many never replanted Jan van Riebeeck, the first governor of the 1899 saw the beginning of the Anglo-Boer War. The wine industry was in chaos. A proliferation of new plantings caused overproduction and 25 years of hardship followed Cape, planted the first In the first half of the 19th century vines at the Cape increased from 13 to 55 million and wine production from 0,5 million to 4,5 million litres 2 Fe bruary 1659, the fiirst wine was mad e from Cape grapes less than 30% of all grapes harvested were used for wine aimed at the consumer market & the remaining 70% were discarded, distilled into brandy or sold as table grapes and juice The Wine of Origin legislation was instituted vineyard in 1655 The 18th Century saw a critical shortage of oak vats & the struggle to identify the best varieties & techniques for local conditions French Hugu enots settled in the Cape between 1680 and 1690 & the wine industry began to flourish

THE NEDERBURG AUCTION SEAL OF APPROVAL Each of the 146 wines that will be sold at the 2016 Nederburg Auction has earned the Auction s Seal of Approval, which is affixed to each bottle as a mark of quality and authenticity. This golden seal is an endorsement and a reassurance for both trade and consumers that these wines represent the pinnacle of rare, properly matured, fine South African wines. Every wine selected for the Nederburg Auction has to fulfill four criteria before it can be deemed worthy to come under the hammer: 1. The Nederburg Auction encourages winemakers to submit wines that they feel represent the pinnacle of their winemaking skills, and which are no longer available anywhere else, thus enhancing the rarity factor of the wines at auction. 2. Wines submitted must generally be at least five years old for red wines and two years old for white wines. 3. Each wine must then pass the exhaustive selection process that sees them achieve character, style, and quality benchmarks, as judged by the panel of wine experts. The selection tasting is conducted blind and the results are audited. 4. The final consideration is whether the wines will, in the opinion of the selection panel, continue to evolve and mature in order to provide a return on investment for buyers. This unique approach presents buyers with the opportunity to purchase fine, bottleaged wines that they can sell or serve immediately, yet be confident in the knowledge that the wines will continue to develop should they wish to further cellar them in order to extract additional value

AUCTIONEERS 2016 GUEST SPEAKER For the first time in the history of this prestigious event, two auctioneers will knock down the wines selected for the 42nd annual Nederburg Auction. David Elswood, International Head of Wine for Christie s, joins Bonhams Anthony Barne MW, who marks his seventh consecutive year as auctioneer for South Africa s longest running fine wine auction. David has been in the wine trade since 1981 and has enjoyed a long working relationship with Christie's that includes working with Michael Broadbent MW and Anthony Hanson MW to ensure that Christie s stays at the forefront of the competitive international wine auction market. Having officiated for several international auctions, including the Florida Winefest Auction, Auction Napa Valley and the Napa Premiere in 2015 and 2016, David is thrilled to be involved with the Nederburg Auction. South Africa is coming into its own as a country that can produce quality wines that easily measure up against the best in the world. I look forward to helping discerning buyers to acquire the exceptional wines that feature on the auction - while they re still fairly affordable! Anthony Barne is only the third auctioneer in the 41-year history of the Nederburg Auction, following in the footsteps of the legendary auctioneer Patrick Grubb MW ( ) and the late Stephan Welz ( ). Anthony says: Visiting wineries in the Cape each year and discussing wine-making with the growers makes me realise how far things have come in the time that I have had the privilege of attending the Nederburg Auction. Each year s sale is eagerly anticipated, especially as talking to the buyers and taking their bids in this dynamic and professionally-run sale is such a fantastic experience! Roland Peens will take up the guest charity auctioneer s gavel for this year s Nederburg Charity Auction. The director of Wine Cellar for more than a decade and an experienced wine merchant, Roland has been tremendously fortunate to taste many fine wines across the world. In the case of the Nederburg Charity Auction, Roland s passion for and knowledge of fine wines, several of which will come under the charity auction hammer, puts him in the perfect position to maximise each charity auction item for bidders, and in doing so raise much needed funds for the beneficiaries. With more than thirty years as a wine judge and an equal number of wine awards under his belt, influential UK wine journalist and guest speaker at the 2016 Nederburg Auction Tim Atkin MW finds it curious that he doesn t have a red nose to show for it. The internationally followed wine writer and judge has served as a member and co-leader of the Nederburg Auction selection panel for several years. During this time he has cemented his reputation as a practical and sensible judge, being exceptionally knowledgeable about South African wine and not shy to vigorously defend his annual choices for inclusion or exclusion of wines in the Auction line-up. This willingness to speak his mind will be very much at the forefront of his keynote address at the Auction when he tackles the sometimes controversial subject of South African wine heritage: Is heritage a boon or burden to the local industry? And to what extent if at all should South African producers depend on past successes to ensure icon wines in the future? Given his strong views on SA wines, often masked with the characteristic dry wit that has made him such a popular and widely-published writer, Atkin is bound to both stir and delight during his keynote address on Saturday, 17th September, prior to the start of the day's bidding. Atkin writes for Woman and Home, The World of Fine Wine, Gourmet Traveller Wine, Jamie Magazine, Fine Drink Magazine (China) and The Economist s Intelligent Life and appears regularly as a wine expert on BBC One s Saturday Kitchen. He is also one of the popular Three Wine Men with Olly Smith and Oz Clarke, co-hosting half a dozen consumer weekends each year in the UK. In 2012, Atkin was named as one of Wine Intelligence s 10 for 10 (people who had made a positive and lasting impact on the wine industry)

CHARITY AUCTION During the Middle Ages, a portion of any harvest was always reserved for planting as the next year s crop. One could view it as an investment in the future. Similarly, the Nederburg Charity Auction is committed to investing in the futures of the people who make up the backbone of our local industry: our labour, the teachers and social workers who help educate and care for our workforce, their children and their dependants. Since 1993, the Nederburg Charity Auction has invested in local charity organisations in the areas of healthcare, youth development and education. Traditionally run after the main auction event, the Nederburg Charity Auction supports two community-focused organisations that directly influence the quality of life of the areas in which they operate. This year, The Breytenbach Centre in Wellington and the Hope Through Action project in Paarl will benefit from the proceeds raised on Saturday, 17 September, prior to the luncheon. Thelema Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Vertical X 750ml Cabernet, donated by Singita Gyles Webb bought Thelema, a charming dilapidated fruit farm, in 1983, and developed it into what has become one of South Africa s most renowned wine producers. As cellarmaster he became renowned not only for some of the neatest vineyards in Stellenbosch but also for the longevity of their characterful wines. The Cabernet Sauvignon from Thelema is a benchmark in the vanguard of serious modern contemporary long-lived SA wines. This vertical represents the second decade and beyond of the Black Label Cabernet in a bespoke display box. Singita dedicated to environmentally conscious hospitality, sustainable conservation and the empowerment of local communities, Singita, meaning place of miracles, was founded in 1993 with a single lodge, Singita Ebony Lodge. Today, Singita is the trusted guardian of over half a million acres of pristine land in Africa and is responsible for making a tangible difference in the lives of the people living and working in and around its lodges. Singita proudly operates 12 lodges and camps, each a unique experience in its own right, in five regions across three countries in Africa. The Thelema vertical of vintages, still available for Singita guests during their lodge stays, is representative of the dedicated fine SA wine purchasing and maturation programme based in the Cape Winelands, established to offer genuine provenance and mature wine enjoyment. Estimated Value ZAR

House of Van Ryn s, 42-year-old potstill brandy 1 X 750ml bottle organic potstill brandy, donated by Distell "To celebrate the 42nd Nederburg Auction we have pot-stilled a one-of-a-kind 42-year-old Van Ryn s brandy. Besides its age, the brandy also matches the standards set by the Nederburg Auction through the years. The nose is rich in chocolate, with hints of coffee, red berries and spice. It is smooth on the mouth with roasted coffee, chocolate and lingering berry notes. Estimated Value ZAR Alto Rouge X 750ml bottle, donated from the Distell Tabernacle Situated on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain in the Stellenbosch district, Alto dates back to 1693 when it was part of a much larger farm called Groenrivier (Green River), granted to a free burgher by Governor Simon van der Stel. In 1919 the owner of the farm, Hennie Malan, sold off half the land to his brother-inlaw and set about planting vines on his remaining portion, focusing exclusively on red varieties. He named the farm Alto, a reference to its altitude (some slopes rise as high as 500m above sea level) and his striving for excellence. Alto was one of the great South African wines of the era. Their Cabernet Sauvignon was particularly fine and unlike many of the time, didn t contain any Cinsaut. This is one of the rarest South African red wines seen on the market and it s a true collector s item! Estimated value ZAR Château Haut Brion Premier Grand Cru X 730ml bottle, donated from the Distell Tabernacle Thomas Jefferson, the American ambassador to Paris and later President of the United States of America, visited Haut Brion on May 25th He commented in his journals about the soils of the vineyards and mentioned that there were four vineyards of first quality Château Margaux, Château Latour Ségur, Château Haut Brion and Château La Fite. He also wrote: Haut Brion is a wine of the first rank and seems to please the American palate more than all the others that I have been able to taste in France. Classified a First Growth in 1855, Haut-Brion has done everything possible ever since then to maintain its standing. To perpetuate its Grand Cru status, an estate and its constituent parts have to be maintained over the centuries, suitable grape varieties for each plot have to be chosen, and a relentless selection process carried out. Today, a great American family, the Dillons, have been continuing this tradition for seventy years. Haut Brion, together with Latour, are the Premier Cru that have been most consistent for the last 100 years, never going through a phase where their wines were not worthy of their Premier Cru status was a classic vintage in the Medoc and this wine has reached the twilight of its life. At 50 years it is not only a collector s item but an unbelievable wine. Estimated value ZAR Stellenbosch Cinsaut X 750ml bottles, donated from the Distell Tabernacle The mid-1970s marked a period of sustained economic growth in South Africa, followed by a period of political and economic difficulties marking the worst recession since the Second World War. With inflation running continually at double digit levels and real growth slowing down, expenditure on alcoholic beverages was affected. In line with the market situation, Stellenbosch Farmers Wine Trust sales declined from 1974 onwards but fortunately the spirits sector showed an increase. Despite opposition activity SWT held its market share in the wine sector while improving it in the spirits sector. The Stellenbosch Cinsaut range was sadly discontinued in 1974, but the remarkable vintage is showing incredibly well today. Cinsaut can age extremely well. Estimated value ZAR Madeira Bual X 750ml bottle, donated by David Elswood MW This wine was bottled by Manuel de Sousa Herdeiros Lda, from a limited edition that was bottled from demijohns in The bottle is numbered 1392 and labelled with The Madeira Selo de Garantia neck seal. The level is perfect - into the neck with a wax capsule. Estimated Value ZAR Grangehurst Vertical Collection - Nikela, 2001, 2003, X 1.5L bottles, donated by Grangehurst Winery Nikela is a Cape Blend first produced at Grangehurst in The word Nikela means a gift or tribute to one s ancestors this wine being a tribute to winemaker Jeremy Walker s late parents, Eddie and Betty, who contributed greatly to the establishment of Grangehurst (named after their childhood homes The Grange and Hurst Close in England). The first five vintages of this wine including the 2001 vintage were blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage and Merlot. From 2002 onwards, the blends have included Shiraz so the 2003 and 2005 vintages are blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, Shiraz and Merlot. Grangehurst wines have a reputation for ageing well and these three vintages are all in fine condition. This is a unique lot featuring one bottle from six of the region s best producers. I bought all of these (and many other wines) on release and 30 31

have stored them in my cellar in London ever since. These wines are all good to drink now but will continue to drink well for another decade. A treat for Italophiles. Tim Atkin MW Estimated Value ZAR Le Bonheur Cabernet Sauvignon X 750ml bottles, donated from the Distell Tabernacle Le Bonheur Cabernet Sauvignon 1986 is an attractive deep-ruby and garnet in colour. It has an integrated bouquet of blackcurrant and Cabernet Sauvignon aromas, well supported by rich woody spice. It is concentrated on the palate, full and round. There is a persistent tannic aftertaste. Michael Woodhead, owner and winemaker of Le Bonheur has often been hailed as a perfectionist. And with good reason. He spent four years perfecting the structure and composition of Le Bonheur s soil, modelling it on those of the famous vineyards of France. He then chose the top-performing cultivars, all perfected through clone selection, and all ideally suited to the wine estate s climate was one of the finest vintages of the 80s in the Cape. Estimated value ZAR Rustenberg X 750ml bottles, donated from the Distell Tabernacle Rustenberg has a wine-growing history dating back to 1682, when Roelof Pasman from Meurs, near the Rhine, recognised its wine-growing potential. By 1781 some 3000 cases of wine were produced on the farm. In the early 1800s Rustenberg was divided by owner Jacob Eksteen and a section was given to his son-in-law, who named it Schoongezicht and sold it soon after. Rustenberg and Schoongezicht were at their peak around 1812, with beautiful homesteads and flourishing vineyards. But by mid-century, recession coupled with disease in the vines, brought bankruptcy and dispossession. Schoongezicht was rescued in 1892 by John X Merriman (who was to become Prime Minister of the Cape), and Rustenberg by his brotherin-law Sir Jacob Barry. Together they revitalised the farms. In 1941 Peter and Pamela Barlow bought Rustenberg, later acquiring Schoongezicht and reuniting the properties. Their son Simon took over the running of the farm in Simon s son, Murray, joined in the running of the farm with his father in The Barlows have been at Rustenberg for over 70 years: the longest period any one family has owned the farm was a great vintage in the Cape and this is an extremely special and rare wine! Estimated value ZAR Mulderbosch Faithful Hound Red X 3L bottle, donated by Mulderbosch Vineyards The Mulderbosch Faithful Hound celebrates the virtues of Bordeaux s great tradition of blending by being one of the first five varietal blends in the Cape. Aside from investing considerable effort in its own vineyards in close proximity to False Bay, Mulderbosch s quest to find the perfect terroirs for each variety used in the blend leads them from the cool mountain plateau of Elgin to the rich, shale soils of Bottelary, and many places in between. The goal with each bottling of Faithful Hound is to produce a rich, complex wine that comfortably expresses old world class and the generosity of fruit associated with the Cape. This wine is a blend of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, 8% Malbec and 5% Cabernet Franc and displays a deep ruby colour. Blackcurrant, coffee, nutmeg, allspice, forest floor and mulberry aromas entice the nose. This follows through on the palate together with ripe plum, intense blackberry and voluptuous vanillins giving the wine great structure and complexity. Estimated Value ZAR Zonnebloem Cabernet Sauvignon X 750ml bottles, donated from the Distell Tabernacle One of the oldest continually available trademarks still on the market is Zonnebloem Cabernet Sauvignon, the benchmark by which many other Cape Cabernets are judged. The blending principle is that of Bordeaux: it has never been one hundred per cent Cabernet, not even when John de Villiers was said to have crushed 10 parts Cabernet to one part Hermitage. The history of Zonnebloem, one of SA s most esteemed wines, dates back to the early part of the 18th century when the wines were already being produced on the Zonnebloem farm at Simondium. In 1940, John de Villiers, owner of the farm, started making red wines in collaboration with Bill Winshaw. The first awards were won in 1943 and in 1946, at the Cape Wine Show, Zonnebloem received nine trophies and the overall champion gold medal. This year, winning wines from the 2011 competition are on offer as part of the annual Charity Auction collection. The Association was founded in 1995 by a number of Pinotage producers dedicated to improving and promoting wine made from this unique South African grape varietal. Through the generous sponsorship of Absa Bank, the Association was able to launch a competition during 1997 to designate the Top Ten Pinotage wines available annually in commercial quantities. The primary purpose of 10 winners instead of only one, as in most other competitions, is to give exposure to the whole spectrum of the best Pinotage wines that are locally available

This competition has succeeded in creating a benchmark for the development of distinctively styled South African Pinotage wines to ensure the varietal's uniqueness in the international wine world. Estimated Value ZAR Galpin Peak Pinot Noir & The Bouchard Finlayson Hannibal , X 1.5L bottles, donated by Distell. Galpin Peak Pinot Noir Pinot Noir carries the crown of being the most terroir-expressive of all grape varieties. The beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde Valley represents a unique combination of soil and climate that exists in only a handful of places where the exact balance provides the perfect expression of this elusive grape. The Bouchard Finlayson Hannibal Originally prompted by the classic taste and palate of Italian varieties: Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. The importation of these grape varieties in 1989 led to the development of this highly successful blend, with the first commercial launch of the Hannibal label 12 years later. The name Hannibal was adopted as a symbolic expression of the synergy with the African elephant participating in linking the wine lands of France and Italy together two thousand years ago under the invading command of the classic Carthaginian general. Estimated Value ZAR Nederburg Private Bin Cabernet Sauvignon The story of a decade 10 X 750ml bottles, donated by Distell head winemaker, Razvan Macici, on behalf of Nederburg Nederburg's signature red is undoubtedly Cabernet Sauvignon. A variety that offers winemakers a wonderful chance to tell the story of vineyard site, it also offers the potential to produce wines of remarkable depth, intensity and length of flavour that can age with consummate grace. "That is why it has always been a great privilege to make such wines for our exclusive Private Bin collection offered only at the annual Nederburg Auction." They are all handmade and sourced from best-of-the-best vineyards with additional bunch and berry selection taking place in the cellar to ensure only the finest of fruit. These Private Bin R163 wines from 2001 to 2010 represent a one-off ensemble. Intended as an evocation of vineyard, vintage and legacy but also of new thinking, they are a unique expression of Nederburg's history. Estimated Value ZAR Taylor s Vintage Port, X 750ml bottle, donated by Wine Cellar 1948 was not a widely declared Port year, but Taylor s is regarded as the wine of the vintage. Neal Martin awarded the wine the magic 100/100 in 2012, with Spectator offering an almost perfect 99 points. This is the greatest bottle of 48 Taylors that I have ever encountered. It has a bouquet that you want to wrap up, take home and mount on your mantelpiece. Indescribably pure scents of raspberry, leather, truffle, granite and minerals. You could pick each scent from the air. The palate is sheer perfection you cannot envisage how a mature Port could be any better. It is blessed with brilliant delineation, sensational power that is totally controlled and startling precision and tension on the finish. Heavenly. Drink now Neal Martin, Wine Advocate I have had this numerous times and I have always been bowled over by its great quality. It is teeming with plum aromas and flavors. Deep ruby-red, with coffee, cocoa, violet and plum aromas, full-bodied, with ripe fruit flavors, medium tannins and a balanced finish. Very firm and refined, it will age on and on. Wine Spectator Estimated Value ZAR Verdelho CVM X 750ml bottle, donated by Patrick Grubb MW The 1882 Verdelho, CVM is a stencilled bottle with a wax capsule. It originates from a private stock of a previous director of the Compania Vinicola da Madeira. So many of the original bottles shattered, when the stock was recorked last year, that it was decided to decant all the bottles into new glass, recork, recapsule and stencil all the stock. I have tasted the wine with friends and it was much appreciated! When Christian Moueix, the founder of Dominus and, at the time, managing coowner of Pétrus, handed me this bottle in 1991 he said: This is not one of the great vintages of Pétrus, but it's certainly a good one'. 57 Established in 1928 our family winery boasts vineyards surrounding Stellenbosch enabling us to produce exceptional quality white and red wines. Champions of Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay from the Bottelary Hills with two International trophies in recent years and renegades of Shiraz from the decomposed granite soils of the Golden triangle, our winemaker, Tertius Boshoff, chose winemaking above dentistry, and viticulturist, Kobie van der Westhuizen, pushed accountancy aside for the love of vineyards. Stellenzicht, founded in 1692, is almost as old as the town of Stellenbosch itself. Situated between the Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountains, the wines are styled to balance passion with restraint, and might with elegance. 58 A picture-perfect destination nestled among vineyards and olive groves on the crest of the Helshoogte Pass with sweeping views across False Bay, Tokara prides itself on making wines that are site specific. Set on the south western slopes of the Simonsberg in the greater Stellenbosch wine district, Uitkyk Wine Estate is a magnificent wine estate, brimming with history, delicious wines, immaculate gardens and endless views. 59 With a wine-making legacy that began on 1 February 1700, the renaissance of Vergelegen s wines began in With the knowledge that great wines are always made in the vineyard, 12 months were spent identifying the optimum sites on which to grow vines before any planting took place. The wines on auction today reflect the harmony and craftsmanship that set this great estate apart. Contact Details: +27 (0) vanrensburga@vergelegen.co.za Vergenoegd (which literally means satisfaction has been achieved in Dutch) was originally granted in 1696 to Pieter de Vos, who must have felt that he had achieved satisfaction a short distance from the port city of Cape Town. The view from the homestead today towards Table Mountain in the west remains almost unaltered. The farm is virtually on the shores of False Bay and is overlooked by the impressive Hottentots Holland Mountains. 60 We as Schalk Burger & Sons, owners of the estate believe that the winemaking process starts in the vineyard. As resident proprietors & custodians of the land we are proud of our farm, Welbedacht (meaning well thought out in Dutch) granted in 1830, and have been producing wine and quality grapes since those early days as a testament to the estate s unique and well-thought-out positioning against the slopes of Groenberg Mountain overlooking the picturesque Cape Winelands. With over a century of wine-making history, 4th generation winemaker Philip Jonker and family have plenty to celebrate. The soil of the Jonker family estate is the soul and the foundation of the wines produced, with each wine made to express the terroir of its origin. There is an appreciation for the art of literature at Weltevrede and the names of the wines invite curiosity and reveal layers of passionate artistry behind every wine. 61 Located on the verdant northern slopes of Paarl Mountain, Windmeul Kelder, established in 1944, continues to be inspired by the 19th century windmill after which the cellar is named. Our approach is based on a combination of cutting-edge wine-making techniques and age-old wisdom that is applied side by side in our state-of-the-art facilities. In this way our passionate cellar team is able to coax award-winning wines from the grapes that have been entrusted to us by the region s hardworking farmers. South African wines so often tread the line between the Old World and the New, between time-honed legacies and technological modernity, and for Zonnebloem s range of award-winning wines, this balance of classic and contemporary is ever present.
