3 BAROSSA WINE CHAPTERS AUCTION 2015 Introduction Baron Andrew Caillard, MW The Barossa represents the heartland of Australian wine. Since 1837, when it was first surveyed by South Australia s founder Colonel William Light, this region has prospered through the weather of time. From its humble and tough colonial beginnings to its contemporary renown, the Barossa reflects the hopes, aspirations, achievements and goodwill of modern Australia. The early settlers were a mixture of English and Silesian - German speaking - migrants, all seeking a new life away from the rigorous class structures and economic challenges of Blighty or religious persecutions in teutonic Europe. Like cats and dogs in a single room, these two completely different social groups eventually learned to live together. This was not the land of milk and honey in the early days. The going was really difficult with many families living as subsistent farmers. Both the first and second world wars intervened to create mistrust and misgivings. In these heightened times of insecurity, it is worth reflecting how the Barossa has succeeded through tolerance, perseverance and common purpose. The fear of Germanisation during the first half of the 20th Century, has been replaced with a great sense of pride. The culture of the Barossa is unique and moving. Those old vine gardens, tenderly loved by generations of farmers, are living monuments to peace and harmony. Many of these plots of land have become important vineyards producing world-class fine wine with a singular accent of place. During the early 19th Century economists were concerned about the economic power of land and its ability to sustain communities. This pre-industrial revolution philosophy is the origin of terroir, where defence of identity and local commerce was a paramount concern. Protection was the only way known to fight against the cycles of blight and starvation. Economic prosperity, science, invention and progress altered society s reference points. Land, generally a source of sustenance, would become more valuable if it provided an aesthetic, a convenience or a status. Those beautiful fragile old vines that punctuate the Barossa, many over one hundred years old, were once the source of fruit for local consumption. Now they represent so much more. Steeped in history and community, they define the essence of Barossa s identity. Anchored in ancient soils and laden with exquisite fruit, these vines and their wines bring to us a feeling of belonging and commonwealth. When I drink a bottle of Hill of Grace, Freedom 1843, Block 42 and Stonewell, I think of all the things that made it possible for it to exist; the geography, the history, the people, the vineyards and the commitment over generations. The Barossa s unique provenance is remarkable and magical. The Barossa Wine Chapters Auction comprising many great and rare wines offers collectors and supporters an insight into the character, rich diversity and generosity of the Barossa. Its strong representation on Langton s Classification of Australian Wine and overall currency say much about how the Barossa s wines are perceived by the fine wine market. It is poignant too. The Barossa is one of the great wine regions of the world. It has earned its place through generations of effort and the production of superbly crafted wines. While the wine styles may adapt to the beat of new ideas, this place and its people will always lie close to our hearts. Glory to the Barossa! 1

4 BAROSSA WINE CHAPTERS AUCTION CATALOGUE Foreword Linda Bowes, Chairman, Barossa Grape & Wine Association The Barossa grape and wine community believes in big ideas, and when we first initiated dialogue with our members around the proposed changes to the Barossa Wine Auction, the concept was enthusiastically embraced. Intuitively we ve known that although previous Auctions have achieved so much for the Vintage Festival and the region in the past thanks to the many people and companies who have donated generously of their time and wines, our offer to wine collectors the world over needed to evolve. Wine Hero Director Paul Henry penned some words a few years ago that I believe capture our collective sense of place and vision for the Auction. If Australia truly has a proposition that can take its place among the great regional destinations of the world, then it is hard to think of a more richly-textured and colourfully-toned destination than the Barossa. We have set an ambitious new vision for the Barossa Wine Chapters Auction and on behalf of the Board I m delighted to invite your involvement in this 2015 Auction, as well as our longer journey to position the Auction as a truly hallmark wine event in the Southern Hemisphere. I d like to acknowledge the involvement Oddbins Wine Auctions has had with previous Vintage Festival Auctions, and to particularly thank Merrilyn Middleton for the role she played in assisting our volunteer committee achieve so much over the years. In 2015 we ve welcomed new partners, Langton s Auctions, who have also offered tremendous support in helping us build towards our vision of establishing a world renowned Wine Auction event. The support of the Barossa winemakers though is paramount to our endeavours and once again, united by a desire to celebrate the best of the Barossa s great sites and regional expressions, they have responded by digging deep in their cellars to bring forth wines of pedigree and rarity. It is testament to the collaborative spirit of the region that the catalogue has expanded to include more producers and lots on offer than ever before. I commend the Barossa Wine Chapters Auction catalogue to you as a wonderful opportunity to help us celebrate the fruits of their labour. 2

10 THE LANGTON S CLASSIFICATION EXPLAINED The Honour Roll of fine Australian wine Langton s Classification of Australian wine is the paramount form guide to Australia s finest wines. Entry into the Classification is based on a wine s reputation and track record at auction. The two requirements for inclusion in the Classification are that a wine has been made for a minimum of 10 vintages and that it has a track record in the secondary market. Eligibility rests on how well a wine performs in the open market the volume of demand it attracts and the prices it realises. The authority of the Classification derives from its independence; the fundamental criteria for inclusion are objective and market-driven. Revised every four years, the Classification documents an evolving Australian winemaking culture at the forefront of innovation and excellence in the world of fine wine. It maintains a strong emphasis on red wines, particularly labels renowned for cellaring potential. The inaugural Classification, in 1990, included just 34 wines. Classifications II, III and IV followed at approximately fiveyear intervals, tracking the leading wines, and documenting the dramatic growth and increasing maturity of the Australian fine wine scene. By 2010, when the fifth edition appeared, the Classification had evolved to include 123 wines and its authority was universally recognised. The sixth and current edition Langton s Classification of Australian Wine VI unveiled on 1 May 2014 includes 139 wines and reflects a continuing momentum towards single vineyard wines and regional identity. In its early years, the Classification successfully strengthened the fledgling market for fine Australian wine. Twenty-five years later it is arguably the most famous and widely-respected wine Classification outside Europe. EXCEPTIONAL The most highly sought-after and prized first-growth Australian wines. OUTSTANDING Super-Second Australian wines of outstanding quality and provenance. EXCELLENT Classic Australian wines of consistent excellence. 11 THE BAROSSA CHAPTERS & THE AUCTION James March, CEO, Barossa Grape & Wine Association The Barossa Chapters are the foundations of the Barossa regional story. They are not the story in itself, but rather the skeleton or structure that gives our story its shape. The Chapters offer focus and direction, and provide an easy point of entry, depending on your own personal interest or your preferred line of enquiry - be it historical, gastronomic or purely vinous. Together they provide a highlighted narrative, tying together our past, present and future, and offering an insight into the features that colour our changing landscape both physical and cultural. They can be read individually, in or out of sequence, or viewed as a logical progression that takes you from before settlement to current, regional identity. Most importantly, The Chapters are all a work in progress, and even those that are founded in our historical past will continue to evolve as successive generations make their own, defining contribution. We hope that by participating in our auction and by following our Chapters, you too will become part of the story. If there is one thing that I have learned as a wine auctioneer and observer, it is that the most enduring and inspiring wines belong to places with a strong identity, underpinned by a strong community. They are also real and meaningful and stand for something: of natural beauty or a fine wine philosophy. Undoubtedly, the Barossa is such a place... Andrew Caillard, MW THE BAROSSA TRUST MARK The Barossa Trust Mark is a mark of aspirational standard set by the Barossa region. It provides you with a guarantee and assurance of quality. It is founded on five value pillars: Origin - our sense of place Integrity - our sense of purpose Quality - our sense of ambition Environment - our sense of responsibility Community - our sense of belonging BAROSSA OLD VINE CHARTER The Barossa Old Vine Charter was introduced in 2009 to register vineyards by age, so that older vines could be preserved, retained and promoted. The Charter groups vineyards into four categories by age: OLD VINES: equal or greater than 35 years of age SURVIVOR VINES: equal or greater than 70 years of age CENTENARIAN VINES: equal or greater than 100 years of age ANCESTOR VINES: equal or greater than 125 years of age Look for these categories through this catalogue. Granted under licence, the Trust Mark is awarded to Barossan products and experiences that demonstrate exemplary achievement and distinction across these five areas of value creation. Trust Mark holders have a deep commitment to these values. The Barossa Trust Mark is your assurance that the food, wine or tourism offering you are choosing is one that meets a standard of excellence, on which you can rely. Look for the Barossa Trust Mark logo throughout this catalogue. BAROSSA WINE CHAPTERS AUCTION

22 The mist, the solitude, the forbidden allure: I almost felt like a spy. I was there to taste some of Australia s most astonishing red wines, yet I hardly dared tell anyone I was going. When I owned up later, and shyly admitted how much I d liked them, I was met with near-incredulity. At least once, I was asked to confirm what I d just said. These are the great wines you aren t, in rightthinking circles, meant to like: too rich, too much alcohol, too many Parker points. They swim furiously against Australia s current tide of early-picking righteousness and buttoned-down restraint. But, sorry folks, great they are. Decanter.com Andrew Jefford chrisringland.com Lot 5L Dry Grown Barossa Ranges Shiraz L Double Magnum $2600 to $3200 Sourced from Chris Ringland s 100 Year Old Barossa Vineyard. Pick 16th April and pressed 22nd April, Bottled 30th March, Limited release with only 1300 bottles, 54 magnums, 12 double magnums and three imperials filled. Exceptional The Cirillo family are custodians of what are believed to be the oldest continuously producing Grenache and Semillon vineyards in the world. Planted in 1848, these vines are not only a part of the Barossa s history but also Australia s winemaking heritage. The Cirillo s have been the custodians of this great legacy for the past 40 years, but their winemaking heritage spans back over nine generations to the Southern Italian province of Calabria. cirilloestatewines.com.au Lot 6L Cirillo 1850 Ancestor Grenache Collection 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 $500 to $600 This collection is Cirillo Estate s first release to their current release. From what is known to be the oldest continuously producing Grenache vineyard in the world, this is the only collection of its kind. The wines are further enhanced by being presented in a stunning box crafted by A. Stiller Coopers from a wine vat made in 1848 (the same year the vines were planted). For the successful bidder, Marco Cirillo will conduct a vertical tasting of the wines for up to four people in the Grenache vineyard at a mutually agreed time. Ancestor Vines 20

23 DAVE & PHIL LEHMANN Our first wines made. Stole beautiful Stonewell fruit from Dad s vineyards and jagged an amazing vintage. These wines gave us the winemaking bug that never left. Lot Stelzer Road Cabernet Sauvignon Ghost Wine 1998 $150 to $200 The Cabernet was from a small block of 30 year old vines next to Dave s now house off Stelzer Road. The berries were tiny, and though we picked half a tonne, it was more skins than juice and plunging the small open fermenters took nearly more muscles than we had. Pressing yielded only 1x225l (new) barrique, where the wine stayed for two years prior to bottling. Lot Stonewell Hill Shiraz Ghost Wine 1998 $150 to $200 The grapes were sourced from the south east corner of the Stonewell Hill block, on the corner of Stonewell and Heinze Roads, from 40 year old Shiraz vines. We picked a tonne. The wine was made in a small open fermenter with hand (and foot) punchdowns for maceration. Pressing was through a tiny basket press, and we finished with enough wine to fill two new 300l hogsheads, where it stayed for two years before bottling. THE BAROSSA CHAPTERS: RARE & DISTINGUISHED There can be little doubt that if Australia has a regional wine story that has resonance around the world then it is The Barossa, comprised as it is of Barossa Valley and its elevated, beautiful high country, Eden Valley. But The Barossa is more than just a wine region, it is also a vital culture of generational fine wine endeavour, pioneering European influence, gastronomic excellence and strong community spirit. Above all, it is pride in a local sense of purpose and belonging. Rare & Distinguished can only be the best of the best the greatest and most eked-out expression of your estate and philosophy that you can express. It is not inclusive in its make-up, but it is democratic in the benefit that it confers an aspiration for, and a demonstration of, excellence and ambition on behalf of the Barossa. 39 Hewitson makes its home amongst some of the oldest vineyards in the world. Discovering the beauty within these venerable old vines, and expressing their distinctive characters through winemaking that respects tradition and understands progress, is the essence of Hewitson. Hewitson was founded in From his extensive travels and vast experience of working and travelling the world of wine, owner and winemaker Dean Hewitson came to the realisation that South Australia s strength lies in its very old vineyards, many of them dry grown from the 19th Century and therefore the oldest of their type in the world. hewitson.com.au Lot 14L Old Garden Mourvèdre 2005, 2006, 2010 $300 to $500 In 1853 Friedrich Koch planted this Mourvèdre vineyard in the heart of the Barossa Valley, in the area now known as Rowland Flat. 40 THE BAROSSA CHAPTERS: OLD VINES The Barossa contains some of the oldest vineyards in the world with one example dating back to 1843 but until recent times, there was no formal schedule of classification or registration. In 2009, the Barossa Old Vine Charter was instituted to register vineyards by age, so that older vines could be preserved, retained and promoted. The Charter groups vineyards into four categories by age: (in ascendant order) Old Vines (Equal or greater than 35 years of age); Survivor Vines (Equal or greater than 70 years of age); Centenarian Vines (Equal or greater than 100 years of age) and Ancestor Vines (Equal or greater than 125 years of age). In the perception of the serious wine-drinker, the Old World owns the integrity to old vineyards. To take an Old Vine Charter to the world will cause a lot of people that take Australia for granted to think again. This charter is about integrity: about hoping that the wines we put in front of people express the place and the variety. It is a necessary evolution that signifies the growing up of Australia. Violet to inky black, often stone-fruit driven, a little licorice-tinged, and usually supported by warm, earthy tannins, Shiraz while almost always generous can also be as fine and supple as it is full-bodied. Debate may rage over what is the Barossa s greatest wine, but even among the apologists for blends, Grenache, Cabernet, Mataro, Riesling and more, there can be little doubt that Shiraz is what the region is most famous for Paul Jaboulet came out from the Rhone Valley in France. I put on my 1962 Hill of Grace and he put on his 1962 La Chapelle. What was amazing was how similar the wines looked and what they matured into. 66 From its inception in 1955, Veritas winery produced mostly fortified wines as well as the famous Bull s Blood, a blend of Shiraz and century-old Mataro. Excellent Old Vines THE BAROSSA CHAPTERS: DISCOVERY There is a world of difference between a desperate tilting at windmills, and a self-assured understanding that there is always room for surprise and delight. Your own region, brand or story may well set a confident and clear expectation, but that can never be the total picture All brands and experiences need an element of first time education and discovery in effect, a constant surpassing of expectation. There is a similar, positively parochial, revivalist spirit to be found among some Australian winemakers Rather than to go overseas to find viticultural inspiration, these winemakers are looking at the vines that have been growing in their own backyard for, in some cases, well over 100 years. In old, established winegrowing regions such as the Barossa Valley, for example, red grapes such as Mataro; Carignan and Cinsault, long considered second-rate varieties, are now sought after both for their savoury flavours and their suitability to hot, dry growing conditions This resonates strongly with the rediscovery and promotion of heritage fruits and vegetables and rare breed animals championed by the Slow Food and farmers market movements Max Allen, The Future Makers 64

67 We believe we are custodians of the land. Our job is to care for it as best we can and pass it down from one generation to the next. We also pass down the traditions taught to us by our forebears. We tend the vineyard by hand and, more recently as our winery has grown, we adhere to traditional methods in the cellar. Our focus is on traditional Barossa varieties and blends, however we are not afraid to give different varieties a go as Australia s wine industry is still in its infancy. 77 Teusner s philosophy comes down to three simple words. True. Righteous. Pleasure. Survivor Vines THE BAROSSA CHAPTERS: BAROSSA GROUNDS So what are the potential sub-regions of the Barossa? From north, south, east and west, from valley floor to the highest hills they include, but are not limited to: Gomersal, Williamstown, Lyndoch, Rowland Flat, Barossa Foothills, Vine Vale, Eden Valley, High Eden, Light Pass, Northern Barossa Valley, Greenock, Seppeltsfield and Marananga. These potential sub-regions are actually some of the original local villages of the settlement or as Robert O Callaghan politely corrected me, the parishes. For a region originally founded on a brave hope for religious freedom, and whose landscape is still punctuated by picturesque stone churches, this seems curiously appropriate. Essentially, the Barossa parishes are not just another chapter in a regional brand story, but rather a demonstration that the detail of place is the ultimate author of wine character. winehero.com.au BAROSSA WINE CHAPTERS AUCTION

88 The Yelland and Papps story perhaps doesn t fit in with the usual line spun by wineries in the Barossa six generations of this, five generations of that. It is a story about new beginnings, a story about a young couple, with a young family, forging their own path within a wine region as first generation winegrowers. While not locals... there is a saying in the Barossa that you have to have a grandparent in the ground before you are considered a local... Susan Yelland and Michael Papps call the Barossa home and are as passionate as any sixth-generation Barossan about the region, its vines, its history and its characters. yellandandpapps.com Lot 237 Devote Old Vine Grenache 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 $210 to $240 The first six vintages of 100% Devote Old Vine Grenache presented in a Yelland & Papps wooden presentation box. Old Vines THE BAROSSA CHAPTERS: BAROSSA FLAVOURS The Barossa already has a strong and established food identity. It speaks most profoundly of its Silesian and German heritage artisan smallgoods, specialist bakers and an elderly but highly productive! community of home-cooks dedicated to the production of delicious pickles, jams and preserves. So far, so gemütlich! But in truth, there lies in the Barossa a passion for food, flavours and hospitality that goes far beyond northern Europe, taking in all of the Mediterranean, and venturing as far east as Cambodia and Vietnam. It was the luckiest accident of my life that Colin and I settled in South Australia s Barossa Valley. If I believed in such things, I might say that fate played a hand in it all: it has always felt that it was just meant to be. Whatever the reason, the quality of our life here is so deep and rich, and so centered around the soil, the seasons and the community, that I now wonder how I was ever a city person. Maggie Beer 86
