3 BAROSSA WINE CHAPTERS AUCTION 2017 Introduction Baron Andrew Caillard, MW When I drink a bottle of Barossa wine, I always think of South Australia s early beginnings, the courage and ambitions of its early settlers and the region s wonderful community of winemakers, growers and families. When the Barossa was first surveyed by Colonel William Light in 1837, the landscape reminded him of Southern Spain, where he had fought with Wellington against Napoleon Bonaparte many years earlier at the Battle of Barrosa (1811). The vast skies, reddish soils and rolling landscape must have been quite a sight to the early settler s eyes. The region was home to the Peramangk people also known as Fire Makers or Red Ochre Peoples who, through their ancient methods of hunting and gathering, had cleared the land into parkland countryside. Regretfully our 19th century visions of becoming the vineyard of the British Empire, impacted on an ancient 60,000-year culture. The history of Barossa has never been easy. The second and third generation of German settlers suffered too. The de-germanisation of South Australian place names (1916) and adjunct government policies of internment and travel restrictions etc., were a reaction to the appalling losses during the First and Second World Wars. Nonetheless Barossa community survived these challenges and prospered. It represents one of Australia s oldest and most successful multi-cultural communities. Barossa s struggle with identity and economic sustainability during colonial times and early-to-mid 20th century, gives it a unique place in Australian wine culture. Tolerance, perseverance, common purpose and generations of effort have built a spirit of generosity that defines the character of the region. The Barossa Grounds project, which identifies and explains the sub-regional expressions of Barossa Shiraz, typifies the kinsmanship, leadership and ambitions of the Barossa people. A combination of humility, confidence, aspiration and flair make Barossa one of the most exciting wine regions in the world. The contemporary Barossa wine scene comprises almost every conceivable outlook and approach to wine enjoyment and style. It is a cradle of innovation, technical expertise and ambition. Centred primarily on staple varieties Shiraz, Grenache, Riesling and to a lesser extent Mataro and Cabernet Sauvignon, winemakers have refined and developed their wines to portray character of vineyard site, multi-varietal style, sub-regional terroirs or even personal or house expression. The diversity of Barossa wine is spectacular; much of it is underpinned by collaborative and encouraging support from local growers, wine friends, business partners and even competitors. What I love about Barossa wine is that it has a distinct voice of place. It s not only what the wine tastes like, but also what it represents. I believe that a single wine can only be an ephemeral experience, regardless of its impact. As a consequence, there is a great difference between beauty and greatness. Beauty is fleeting, and in the eye of the beholder, whereas greatness is something lasting and tangible. Ultimately, history and time can only unravel the secrets of the landscape and the success of human ingenuity. A top Hill of Grace vintage is not only beautiful, it also resonates something else: when the actor Russell Crowe tells people he is Walking the Hill, he is speaking of a timeless experience. Taste alone cannot express that. It is imagination and belief that animates wine and makes it special. AND it is history, and a feeling of belonging to it in some way, that brings authenticity and meaning. Barossa possesses all of those magical ingredients. The Barossa Wine Chapters Auction offers collectors and supporters a unique insight into the character, rich expression and generosity of Barossa wine. It also brings the Barossa community and its supporters together. The catalogue features a wonderful collection of lots, including exclusive experiences, vertical tasting lots and unique formats. It also comprises a strong representation of Langton s Classified Australian Wine, which says much about how Barossa s wines are perceived by the fine wine market. Glory to Barossa! 4 BAROSSA WINE CHAPTERS AUCTION CATALOGUE Foreword Linda Bowes, Chairman, Barossa Grape & Wine Association when you give yourself to places, they give you yourself back; the more one comes to know them, the more one seeds them with the invisible crop of memories and associations that will be waiting for you when you come back, while new places offer up new thoughts, new possibilities. Rebecca Solnit, author, historian, activist And so it is with Barossa. A region so imbued with a sense of place that it entices past visitors to reconnect again and again, and beckons newcomers to discover for themselves. It is a region steeped in Australian winemaking tradition and so innovation may not be the first image that springs to mind, but my involvement in the Barossa grape and wine community has taught me that on this sacred soil, tradition is accompanied by imagination, ingenuity and a desire to exceed past excellence. A few years ago we embarked upon an exciting evolution in the history of the Barossa Wine Chapters Auction a move to expand our offer to wine collectors the world over and create a truly hallmark wine event in the Southern Hemisphere. When we first initiated dialogue with our members around the proposed changes to the Auction, the concept was enthusiastically embraced. Bold ideas are for the brave, and this community s willingness to hear new thoughts and consider new possibilities is what continues to ensure its place at the forefront of the Australian wine industry. Following on from the inaugural Barossa Wine Chapters Auction in 2015, our ambitious vision continues to evolve, and on behalf of the BGWA Board, I m delighted to invite you to join us for the Barossa Wine Chapters Auction I d like to acknowledge our partners, Langton s Fine Wines, who have offered tremendous support helping us towards our vision of establishing a world renowned wine auction event. The support of the Barossa winemakers is paramount to our endeavours and once again united by a desire to celebrate the best of Barossa s great sites and regional expressions they have responded by digging deep in their cellars to bring forth wines of pedigree and rarity. I commend the Barossa Wine Chapters Auction catalogue to you as a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the fruits of their labour, all of which are waiting for you to enjoy. 2

10 THE LANGTON S CLASSIFICATION EXPLAINED The Honour Roll of fine Australian wine Langton s Classification of Australian wine is the paramount form guide to Australia s finest wines. Entry into the Classification is based on a wine s reputation and track record at auction. The two requirements for inclusion in the Classification are that a wine has been made for a minimum of 10 vintages and that it has a track record in the secondary market. Eligibility rests on how well a wine performs in the open market the volume of demand it attracts and the prices it realises. The authority of the Classification derives from its independence; the fundamental criteria for inclusion are objective and market-driven. Revised every four years, the Classification documents an evolving Australian winemaking culture at the forefront of innovation and excellence in the world of fine wine. It maintains a strong emphasis on red wines, particularly labels renowned for cellaring potential. The inaugural Classification, in 1990, included just 34 wines. Classifications II, III and IV followed at approximately five-year intervals, tracking the leading wines, and documenting the dramatic growth and increasing maturity of the Australian fine wine scene. By 2010, when the fifth edition appeared, the Classification had evolved to include 123 wines and its authority was universally recognised. The sixth and current edition Langton s Classification of Australian Wine VI unveiled on 1 May 2014 includes 139 wines and reflects a continuing momentum towards single vineyard wines and regional identity. In its early years, the Classification successfully strengthened the fledgling market for fine Australian wine. Twenty-five years later it is arguably the most famous and widely-respected wine Classification outside Europe. Look for Langton s Classifications throughout this catalogue. EXCEPTIONAL The most highly sought-after and prized first-growth Australian wines. OUTSTANDING Super-Second Australian wines of outstanding quality and provenance. EXCELLENT Classic Australian wines of consistent excellence. 8

11 CATALOGUE SYMBOLS AND SEAL OF PROVENANCE LIVE AUCTION LOTS ONLINE AUCTION LOTS BAROSSA OLD VINE CHARTER The Barossa Old Vine Charter was introduced in 2009 to register vineyards by age, so that older vines could be preserved, retained and promoted. The Charter groups vineyards into four categories by age: OLD VINES Equal or greater than 35 years of age SURVIVOR VINES Equal or greater than 70 years of age CENTENARIAN VINES Equal or greater than 100 years of age ANCESTOR VINES Equal or greater than 125 years of age Look for these categories throughout this catalogue. THE BAROSSA TRUST MARK The Barossa Trust Mark is a mark of aspirational standard set by the Barossa region. It provides you with a guarantee and assurance of quality. It is founded on five value pillars: Origin our sense of place Integrity our sense of purpose Quality our sense of ambition Environment our sense of responsibility Community our sense of belonging Granted under licence, the Trust Mark is awarded to Barossan products and experiences that demonstrate exemplary achievement and distinction across these five areas of value creation. Trust Mark holders have a deep commitment to these values. The Barossa Trust Mark is your assurance that the food, wine or tourism offering you are choosing is one that meets a standard of excellence, on which you can rely. Look for the Barossa Trust Mark logo throughout this catalogue. BAROSSA WINE CHAPTERS AUCTION SEAL OF PROVENANCE The Barossa Wine Chapters Auction Seal of Provenance is verification of the wine s authenticity, direct from the cellars of the winemaker. Each seal is uniquely coded, with every auction item allocated its own individual code. This information, held securely by the Barossa Grape & Wine Association, becomes the point of verification for the life of the wine. The QR code links to the Barossa Wine Chapters Auction web page, providing an ongoing reference to the auction and information updates. 12 THE BAROSSA CHAPTERS & THE AUCTION James March, CEO, Barossa Grape & Wine Association The Barossa Chapters are the foundations of the Barossa regional story. They are not the story in itself, but rather the skeleton or structure that gives our story its shape. The Chapters offer focus and direction, and provide an easy point of entry, depending on your own personal interest or your preferred line of enquiry be it historical, gastronomic or purely vinous. Together they provide a highlighted narrative, tying together our past, present and future, and offering an insight into the features that colour our changing landscape both physical and cultural. They can be read individually, in or out of sequence, or viewed as a logical progression that takes you from before settlement to current, regional identity. Most importantly, The Chapters are all a work in progress, and even those founded in our historical past will continue to evolve as successive generations make their own, defining contribution. We hope that by participating in our auction and by following our Chapters, you too will become part of the story. If there is one thing that I have learned as a wine auctioneer and observer, it is that the most enduring and inspiring wines belong to places with a strong identity, underpinned by a strong community. They are also real and meaningful and stand for something: of natural beauty or a fine wine philosophy. Undoubtedly, the Barossa is such a place... Andrew Caillard, MW 10

22 The mist, the solitude, the forbidden allure: I almost felt like a spy. I was there to taste some of Australia s most astonishing red wines, yet I hardly dared tell anyone I was going. When I owned up later, and shyly admitted how much I d liked them, I was met with near-incredulity. At least once, I was asked to confirm what I d just said. These are the great wines you aren t, in right-thinking circles, meant to like: too rich, too much alcohol, too many Parker points. They swim furiously against Australia s current tide of early-picking righteousness and buttoned-down restraint. But, sorry folks, great they are. 24 THE BAROSSA CHAPTERS: RESILIENCE The current generation of Barossa vignerons are shifting their focus from what they are doing, to how and why they are doing things differently. And in so doing, sharing with consumers the most important lesson of all: ensuring generations to come have the same opportunity to benefit from the land as we do. In the driest, inhabited continent on earth, and with the world s oldest and most ancient geology, the realisation is simple but confronting: unless we convincingly start addressing the challenges of a changing climate and environmental sustainability, then our 200 year-old wine opportunity will be startlingly finite. Barossa vignerons are creating a more resilient landscape in many ways. They re improving soil and vine health by applying mulch and compost under-vine, and planting native and other non-competitive grasses and plants in the midrow to improve water and nutrient infiltration. They re monitoring soil moisture, using water more efficiently, capturing and storing solar energy and water, applying vine sunscreens, and trialling alternative varieties. Many of these actions have the added benefit of enhancing biodiversity, decreasing tractor time, and reducing diesel use and chemicals applied in the vineyard. Nicki Robins, Viticultural Development Officer, Barossa Grape & Wine Association 22

38 THE BAROSSA CHAPTERS: OLD VINES The Barossa contains some of the oldest vineyards in the world with one example believed to date back to 1843 but until recent times, there was no formal schedule of classification or registration. In 2009, the Barossa Old Vine Charter was instituted to register vineyards by age, so that older vines could be preserved, retained and promoted. The Charter groups vineyards into four categories by age: (in ascendant order) Old Vines (Equal or greater than 35 years of age); Survivor Vines (Equal or greater than 70 years of age); Centenarian Vines (Equal or greater than 100 years of age) and Ancestor Vines (Equal or greater than 125 years of age). In the perception of the serious wine-drinker, the Old World owns the integrity to old vineyards. To take an Old Vine Charter to the world will cause a lot of people that take Australia for granted to think again. This charter is about integrity: about hoping that the wines we put in front of people express the place and the variety. It is a necessary evolution that signifies the growing up of Australia. 48 THE BAROSSA CHAPTERS: SHIRAZ AS OUR HERO With over 45,000 ha planted throughout the country, Shiraz is synonymous with Australia, and Barossa is often regarded as its spiritual home. Violet to inky black, often stone-fruit driven, a little licorice-tinged, and usually supported by warm, earthy tannins, Shiraz while almost always generous can also be as fine and supple as it is full-bodied. Debate may rage over what is Barossa s greatest wine, but even among the apologists for blends, Grenache, Cabernet, Mataro, Riesling and more, there can be little doubt that Shiraz is what the region is most famous for Paul Jaboulet came out from the Rhone Valley in France. I put on my 1962 Hill of Grace and he put on his 1962 La Chapelle. What was amazing was how similar the wines looked and what they matured into. Our wine was from vines that were over 100 years old, and his wine was from vines that were probably only about 40 years old. So the Old World was new and the New World was old! Stephen Henschke 46

56 THE BAROSSA CHAPTERS: DISCOVERY There is a world of difference between a desperate tilting at windmills, and a self-assured understanding that there is always room for surprise and delight. Your own region, brand or story may well set a confident and clear expectation, but that can never be the total picture All brands and experiences need an element of first time education and discovery in effect, a constant surpassing of expectation. There is a similar, positively parochial, revivalist spirit to be found among some Australian winemakers Rather than to go overseas to find viticultural inspiration, these winemakers are looking at the vines that have been growing in their own backyard for, in some cases, well over 100 years. In old, established winegrowing regions such as the, for example, red grapes such as Mataro; Carignan and Cinsault, long considered second-rate varieties, are now sought after both for their savoury flavours and their suitability to hot, dry growing conditions This resonates strongly with the rediscovery and promotion of heritage fruits and vegetables and rare breed animals championed by the Slow Food and farmers market movements Max Allen, The Future Makers 54

76 THE BAROSSA CHAPTERS: BAROSSA GROUNDS So what are the potential sub-regions of the Barossa? From north, south, east and west, from valley floor to the highest hills they include, but are not limited to: Gomersal, Williamstown, Lyndoch, Rowland Flat, Vine Vale, Eden Valley, High Eden, Light Pass, Northern, Greenock, Seppeltsfield and Marananga. These potential sub-regions are actually some of the original local villages of the settlement or as Robert O Callaghan politely corrected me, the parishes. For a region originally founded on a brave hope for religious freedom, and whose landscape is still punctuated by picturesque stone churches, this seems curiously appropriate. Essentially, the Barossa parishes are not just another chapter in a regional brand story, but rather a demonstration that the detail of place is the ultimate author of wine character. winehero.com.au 74
