A teddy bear, holiday sticker, and Hershey Candy Bar were packaged in a Valentine s Day cup along with a personal message to the resident from someone special. Valentine s Grams were hand delivered by staff, who serenaded each receiving resident with the song Let Me Call You Sweetheart. Proceeds made from the Valentine s Day Grams benefit the Resident Activity and Entertainment Fund. 2 Page 2 Quilting from the Heart A story of how a small group of women have comforted hundreds of children and their families through their craft Since 2008 right here at Tabor Hills Supportive Living, a small group of women have been busy volunteering their time by designing and crafting quilts that, once finished, are donated to Lurie Children s Hospital of Chicago. A 30 x40 quilt takes approximately 20 hours to make, start to finish. Some of the steps include, just to name a few - selecting a design, cutting the fabric into small pieces, assembling the cut fabric, sewing the fabric together, and then basting and binding. Sounds easy, right? Not so. Each quilt, on average, requires 30 start-tofinish steps to complete and calls for a steady and patient hand. Now these lovely, giving women would never see their handcrafted quilting as a chore or a task that takes 30 steps. These women view their quilting as an act of love; a way to spread love to and connect with a child they don t even know and will never meet; a lovely way to show a child that someone cares. Since 2008 the 180 quilts that have been tenderly sewn, stitch by stitch, have been donated and given to children with complex medical needs who are receiving medical care at Lurie Hospital. These innocent children may have experienced significant trauma in their lives and the quilts are very special to them helping them to cope and cuddle. The word quilt comes from the Latin word culcita, which means, stuffed sack. Quilts have evolved in use from under garments worn by knights during the Middle Ages to today where its mostly used for bedding. Historically, quilting was a utilitarian craft because resources were scarce so the small pieces from used fabrics were sewn together to make a larger piece of fabric to create a quilt. With its complicated patterns and colorful designs, a quilt can be hung on a wall as decoration, be put on top of a bed providing warmth at night, can be used as a lap blanket, can be wrapped around a person to keep them warm or used to cuddle with someone special. A quilt can also provide a feeling of comfort and send a powerful message of love and support when someone is not feeling their best. Many times, upon seeing the quilts for the first time, the staff at Lurie will immediately have a patient in mind who they know will really identify with a quilt, based on its design. It s very exciting for the staff when they present a child and their family with a quilt and witness the pure joy that comes from the child and family. Lurie Hospital was founded in 1882 as the Maurice Porter Memorial Hospital, when nurse and mother Julia Foster Porter established a four-bed cottage located at the corner of Chicago s Halsted and Belden Streets after the death of her 13-year old son. It was the first hospital in Chicago focused solely on the care of children. In 1904 it was renamed to Children s Memorial Hospital and in 2012 changed its name to Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children s Hospital of Chicago. The hospital has provided highly specialized care for hundreds of thousands children from every U.S. state and 35 countries. 3 Tabor Hills Page 3 Freshly Baked Cookies Fundraiser As part of an ongoing monthly fundraiser in efforts to raise proceeds for the Resident Activity and Entertainment Fund., residents of the Healthcare Facility and community volunteers of Tabor Hills freshly bake cookies that are packaged with care. These freshly baked cookies are displayed and sold by the residents in the dining rooms to friends and families of the Healthcare Facility. Resident and President of the Resident Council, Bill O Neil also makes his rounds throughout the building to offer these sweet treats to visitors, residents and staff who may want to indulge in a treat themselves. Naish Shah and his daughter Anjali Shah, volunteers at the Healthcare Facility for many years, help the residents with baking and packaging. Mr. Shah walks with Mr. O Neil to keep him company and assist him with sales and distribution. 4 Page 4 Superbowl LI Doris Eckman, Betty Wik, Don Heimerle and Len Wik Residents of the Independent Living Community gathered at the Semerad Pavilion to watch Super Bowl LI. This is the second annual gathering that is sure to continue to be a tradition over the years to come. Hot ham and cheese, turkey and cheese, and meatball sandwiches, along with chips, dips and drinks were shared at the pre-game show. Residents then crowded around the large screen TV to watch the game together. About thirty residents attended, some bringing a friend from outside the community to enjoy one of America s most popular events. June McCluskey While the game was on, residents played cards or were deep in conversation, while still watching the large TV screen and cheering for their team. At half-time, everyone enjoyed hot and cold hors d oeuvres, more chips and dips, along with some sweets. Some left early to watch the rest of the game at home, but most stayed until the very end. It s a nice way to watch this special event with neighbors and friends from the community.

5 Tabor Hills Page 5 Pavilion Soup Off Residents in the Independent Living Community attended the first ever SOUP OFF between resident June McCluskey and Peggy Osburn, Activity Coordinator, in January. Residents received a small bowl of each soup that was homemade; one prepared by June McCluskey (Hamburger Soup) and another prepared by Peggy Osburn (Chicken Noodle Soup). Each serving of soup was offered along with sandwiches, drinks and dessert. The Hamburger Soup won hands down and June McCluskey was gifted with a beautiful orchid plant as the winner of the SOUP OFF. June is a very active resident in the community and extremely talented in many areas, none more so than homemade crafts. The aprons that they both adorned during the cook off were handmade by June. She is forever making items for the June and December campus craft events. June is also involved in preparation for many of the meals served here at the Pavilion. June is a vital part of the community and loved by all. June McCluskey & Peggy Osburn June McCluskey s Winning Hamburger Soup Recipe 1 lb. Ground Beef 1 Small Chopped Onion (optional) 1 Can Beef Broth 1 Soup Can of Water 1 Can of Diced Tomatoes with Liquid 1 Can Tomato Sauce 2 Stalks of Celery, Chopped 2 Carrots, Slcied 2 Potatoes, Cubed 1 Can of White Corn (small kernel), Drained 1 tsp of Chili Powder Salt & Pepper to Taste Directions: Brown ground beef until crumbly, drain. In stock pot, add drained ground beef and all other ingredients, mix to combine. Simmer 1 to 2 hours, until vegetables are tender, stirring occasionally.
