1 This newsletter is produced by St. Madeleine's students in the Theresa & Edward O'Toole Foundation Adaptive Computer Learning Center. January 2013 Sophie s Gazette Self Advocacy Adopts a Family and Donates to Toys for Tots for the Holidays December was a very busy month for the St. Madeleine Sophie Center Self Advocacy Board. We voted to Adopt A Family in conjunction with Salvation Army, Lizzarraga and the facilitators again went shopping, this time for Toys For Tots. With the help and generosity of Wal-Mart, Self Advocacy board members spend their morning picking out new bikes with funds raised during the year. We donated 13 bicycles and 13 helmets to the local Salvation Army. Inside this issue: Music Awards Review and Recipe 2 Birthdays 3 Campus News 4-6 Menu 7 So, on Tuesday December 18th George Cline, Terry Ogg, Lisa Spencer and facilitators, Billie Anderson and Joan Pierce went shopping for a family of five, which included a grandmother and four children. Our list for the family included toys, CD S, a DVD player, clothing for all, of the family members, a gift certificate for Albertsons and some cash. This family has come across some hard times and SMSC Self Advocacy was thrilled to assist them at this special time of year. The next day Christian Carle, Johna Buckley, Charlie The Self Advocacy Board members would like to thank all the self advocates, parents, care providers and SMSC staff for there assistance at dances and bake sales which make it possible for us to give back to our community. HAPPY HOLIDAYS from your SMSC Self Advocacy Board. Holiday Reminders SMSC will be closed January 1st for the New Year s Day Holiday and January 21st for Martin Luther King Day. Enjoy your days off!

4 Page 4 The OFFICIAL Pool Dome Opening! On Wednesday, December 12th, the Board Members and staff at SMSC had a special red-ribbon cutting ceremony for the Price Family Charitable Fund, Hervey Family Nonendowment Fund at the San Diego Foundation, and Earl McLaughlin who helped us build our pool dome! The dome is a welcome addition at SMSC because it will eliminate pool closures due to low temperatures and inclement weather that are regular parts of the fall, winter, and early spring seasons. As a result, we will be able to offer year-round pool activity for our students and members of the public, including those who participate in Arthritis Foundation, Cuyamaca-Grossmont College, and MS Society programming. The dome will be up until early April 2013, and then tucked away until the following Fall. Come stop by the campus to witness it with your own eyes!
5 Page 5 Adobe Bluffs Presentation for Ability Awareness Day On December 6th, three St. Madeleine Sophie s Center consumers (Lisa Spencer, Stephanie Monis, and Johna Buckley) ventured up to Poway to present to students ranging from elementary school to junior high school age regarding Respectful Language. Ability Awareness Day is a workshop that Adobe Bluffs holds each year that is coordinated by Esther Hilleli. The three consumers helped educate the students about what makes respectful language important and how language can show that you respect all individuals. An open discussion was also held with the students about the consumers and students own personal experience with hurtful language and different ways we can all speak to each other without hurting feelings. At the end of the day, the students made a homemade Thank You card for the SMSC consumers expressing their appreciation for their presentation. SMSC received a letter of thanks from Adobe Bluffs as well. Perfect Attendance Awards Since we began to put an emphasis on attendance 9 months ago, the following individuals had perfect attendance: From left to right,: Chandra Deal, Daphne Hazelbach, Jona Buckley, Bobby Cota, David Walton & Brent Simpson Congratulations!! There were many others who were near perfect throughout this period. We want to thank everyone for their efforts to come to program. Keep up the good work. We will continue to have monthly drawings for those who have perfect monthly attendance, be a part of it!! Remember, Attendance Counts!!
6 Page 6 Consumer Appreciation Day Consumer Appreciation Day was a great way to end the year! Saint Madeleine s hosted a very successful consumer appreciation day on Thursday December 13th. Staff members hosted a number of activities during the day. Numerous staff members manned booths set up for consumers to stop by and get their face painted, make a stocking and even make their own beaded Christmas ornament. Even Santa Claus stopped by on his busy day to wish a merry Christmas to Linda Hansen and many other consumers, brightening up their day! Long time friends Aileen, Kelly and Jackie pose for a quick picture and wish each other a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. A special thanks to all the consumers who attend Saint Madeleine s every day for their hard work, dedication and spirit that makes Saint Madeleine s #1!
