8 The chefs With over 15 years of working together, Chef Gabriel Kreuther and Pastry Chef Marc Aumont opened Kreuther Handcrafted chocolate next door to award winning two Michelin star restaurant Gabriel Kreuther in the winter of chef gabriel kreuther Growing up in Alsace, France, Chef Gabriel Kreuther grew up around all elements of the gourmet world, from his uncle s pastry shop to his grandfather s foie gras farm. From a young age his culinary prowess was already being nationally recognized in France. But it was winning the Meilleur Apprenti de France the competition for the best culinary apprentice, which propelled Gabriel into an international culinary career. During the first decade of his career, Gabriel created culinary delights at Michelin-starred kitchens throughout Europe before bringing his talent to The States. He worked his way up through the top kitchens in NYC, before going on to his role as Executive Chef of The Modern, where his cooking received numerous accolades throughout his nearly decade-long tenure such as one of Food & Wine s Best New Chefs in 2003 and receiving the 2009 James Beard Foundation award for Best Chef: New York City. In June 2015, Gabriel opened the highly anticipated eponymous restaurant, Gabriel Kreuther. Born in Tours, France, Aumont spent his childhood in Chamonix- Mount Blanc surrounded by the world of pastry at his parent s successful bakery, La Gerbe d Or. At the early age of 16, Marc took over his father s successful bakery where he continued on in his love of chocolate & pastry built upon his deep-rooted family heritage. After 12 years running his family s bakery, Aumont enrolled in the highly regarded Culinary School of Pastry in Groisy, France before relocating to New York City in 1998 to work with Chef David Bouley to open the acclaimed Bouley Bakery. Making a splash in the New York pastry world, Aumont was praised for his artful desserts in the New York press. Aumont then joined the opening team of The Modern, as Executive Pastry Chef along with Kreuther, Executive Chef where the two created masterpieces throughout their decade-long tenure at the famed restaurant.
