Remove plant from container. Place the plant in the hole (if the plant has been grafted, make sure the graft is just below ground level) and fill in around the roots by using a mixture of 50% peat moss and 50% good garden soil. When refilling the hole, be sure to pack the soil in around the roots, leaving a small basin shape for holding water. At this stage, it is important that a root starter formulation of fertilizer be used (i.e ). If a stronger formulation is used, damage to the roots may occur. The use of manure at this stage is not recommended because root burning may occur. Tall trees should be staked or braced for the first year to prevent high winds from loosening them. Pruning Fruit Trees * Prune fruit trees in early Spring when the tree is dormant. Never prune a fruit tree when it is in bloom. * Prune small fruiting shrubs in early Spring to remove old or dead wood, or to control size.
