1 Seed Varieties Information 201-1

2 Introduction Welcome to the fourth edition of the Gleadell Autumn Seed Catalogue, a really useful desktop guide for UK growers and advisors that offers practical advice on the best varieties available in each market sector. Gleadell offers a wide range of cereal, oilseed, pulse and root seeds, as well as forage crop, organic and small seeds, using a select number of suppliers to ensure we combine the highest quality product with a prompt and professional service. One such supplier, Dunns (Long Sutton) Ltd, is 100% owned by Gleadell Agriculture and is a major UK agricultural seed wholesale company and specialist human consumption pulse-processing business. Gleadell is a market leader in promoting the development of new varieties, a move that has gained support from end users. This has created a link between seed breeders and consumers, enabling products to be matched to suitable homes once they are brought to the market. Our wheat end-market suitability comments are once again kindly supplied by ADM Milling Ltd. For many years, ADM has worked strategically with leading UK wheat breeders, evaluating pipeline material. This has produced an early understanding of milling and baking functionality in promising varieties, providing valuable commercial feedback and leading to greater confidence in new varieties as they achieve ecommended List (L) status. Through our strategically located suppliers of cereal and pulses seed we aim to offer a consistent high quality and excellent standard of supply, whilst managing the risk of varietal availability due to unforeseen weather events in any given season. Building on the success of last year s catalogue, this new edition provides a further insight into the coming season s key varieties to aid selection for your farm. Chris Guest, Seed Manager Contents Gleadell s view indicates whether UK seed market shares for autumn 201 plantings are up, down or largely unchanged, by variety. 4 Wheat Varieties - Group 1 KWS UK Ltd Quartz x Hereford UK seed market share autumn 201 plantings -.% United Kingdom 102 Gleadell s view - KWS Zyatt was a new addition to the L last year and gained around % market share. It looks set to build on this for autumn 201 plantings as a partner to the established Group 1 varieties GT Skyfall and Crusoe. It features strong yield performance, in both first and second cereal situations, the latter aided by the Hereford parentage (a variety known as a good second wheat) as well as its Pch1 eyespot resistance. The variety suits the main drilling window onwards, and has the highest untreated yield in the Group 1 sector, reflecting its solid disease profile. End-market suitability - KWS Zyatt, added to the ecommended List last year, has confirmed its status as a Group 1 variety after three years of testing. It does have slightly lower water absorption than other Group 1 varieties and, with a strong disease package and high yields, an effective protein management programme will be required to maximise its quality potential..2 [] East region 102 West region 103 North region 100 Untreated yield First cereal 101 Second plus 103 Light soils 101 Heavy soils 102 Specific weight. AGT Seeds Ltd C1 X Hurricane Midge UK seed market share autumn 201 plantings - 10.% United Kingdom 100 Gleadell s view - GT Skyfall continues to be a strong favourite with both quality wheat and feed growers. GT Skyfall was the biggest certified variety in 201 and looks set to remain one of the major varieties for 201 planting. It is the only recommended winter bread-making wheat with orange wheat blossom midge (OWBM) resistance, backing up a strong agronomic package including stiff straw and Pch1 eyespot resistance. GT Skyfall is better suited for later sowing, from the end of September onwards. End-market suitability - GT Skyfall is the leading Group 1 variety for market share and it continues to exhibit good milling and baking performance. Given its high yield, effective protein management will be required to achieve consistency and full milling potential..0 East region 100 West region 100 North region 100 Untreated yield 2 First cereal 100 Second plus 101 Light soils 100 Heavy soils 100 Specific weight. AGT Seeds Ltd Qplus x Battalion UK seed market share autumn 201 plantings - 0.% United Kingdom Gleadell s view - GT Illustrious has struggled to make inroads into the market, coming along two years after its stablemate GT Skyfall and a year before KWS Zyatt. However, due to its quality characteristics it still maintains a position in this sector, and in this catalogue. GT Illustrious is also suitable for early sowings, so may fit for quality wheat growers growing a large acreage and looking to spread workload at sowing. The variety has a solid all-round disease resistance and stiff straw. End-market suitability - This variety has good protein functionality even at lower levels. Over three years of testing it has performed consistently well, with a high level of water absorption being a key feature. Baking performance has been excellent..3 East region West region North region Untreated yield 3 First cereal Second plus Light soils Heavy soils Specific weight. Limagrain Cordiale x Gulliver UK seed market share autumn 201 plantings -.3% United Kingdom Gleadell s view - Crusoe is now outclassed in yield terms by varieties such as KWS Zyatt and GT Skyfall, although its consistency of both grain quality and on-farm performance means it still maintains a strong following. Its resistance of. is still the best in group, with the watchout being brown rust. 3. East region West region North region Untreated yield First cereal End-market suitability - Although lower in yield than other bread wheats, Crusoe remains the quality benchmark due to its ability to produce high protein crops. Good crumb structure and solid baking performance are key attributes that ensure its popularity will continue. Second plus Light soils Heavy soils Specific weight. 0

5 Wheat Varieties - Group 2 KWS UK Ltd KWS Sterling x Timaru UK seed market share autumn 201 plantings -.% Gleadell s view - KWS Siskin has been on the L for two years and has maintained a strong market share. Its combination of yield, disease resistance and premium potential was a step change when the variety was first recommended and is still maintained today. resistance of. is class leading in Group 2 and one of the best on the L. This translates into solid performance in both the East and the West regions. The variety performs well in all situations, both as a first and second cereal, with its strongest performance on heavier sites. End-market suitability - KWS Siskin has a degree of variability in its baking performance. It produces very high yields but will probably be suited to blends, as fullspecification milling protein may be difficult to achieve.. United Kingdom 103 East region 103 West region 103 North region 100 Untreated yield First cereal 103 Second plus 103 Light soils 101 Heavy soils 102 Specific weight. KWS UK Ltd KWS Horizon x Timaru UK seed market share autumn 201 plantings - 3.% Gleadell s view - KWS Lili declined in market share in 201 due to restricted availability of seed, with many multipliers favouring its stablemate KWS Siskin. However, KWS Lili s all-round disease resistance, along with its solid grain characteristics, means it should not be discounted in the decision-making process. Being slightly later maturing, it performs well on light-land sites, and limited data shows it performs well in the early-sown slot. End-market suitability - This is another variety more suited to blends as high yields will possibly dilute protein. KWS Lili s baking performance has been variable over three years of testing..1 United Kingdom 102 East region 102 West region 101 North region 103 Untreated yield First cereal 102 Second plus 101 Light soils 10 Heavy soils 102 Specific weight. KWS UK Ltd (eaper x Cadenza) x Malacca UK seed market share autumn 201 plantings - 1.1% Gleadell s view - Cordiale has continued to decline in market share, as it has been superseded in terms of yield and disease resistance by other varieties. That said, the variety s quality is well known and consistent, helped by its early maturity, which also provides an opportunity for early entry of OS. End-market suitability - Baking and milling performance have remained consistently good over many years since this variety joined the L. Millers have relied upon Cordiale as their Group 2 variety of choice. Treated yield is similar to Crusoe, with early-toharvest credentials and resilient protein and Hagberg levels maintaining its popularity.. 7 Wheat Varieties - Group 3 KWS UK Ltd Bantam x Viscount Midge UK seed market share autumn 201 plantings - 3.% United Kingdom 103 Gleadell s view - Although KWS Barrel was fully recommended in 201, seed availability was very limited, so 201 was its first true commercial year. The variety has gained ground since and looks to have secured a market share just below %. Its high yield, more aligned with feed wheats, has helped reinvigorate the Group 3 sector. KWS Barrel continues to exhibit exceptional yield performance in the North, and has relatively short, stiff straw. The variety features OWBM resistance along with reasonable disease scores, but look out for. It performs best on light soils, and does well when later sown. End-market suitability - KWS Barrel meets all Group 3 criteria required for milling and its market share has grown thanks to its improved yields.. Elsoms Wheat Ltd Cassius x Viscount Midge UK seed market share autumn 201 plantings - 0.2% United Kingdom 103 Gleadell s view - Elicit, a newcomer on the ecommended List, looks to be the perfect Group 3 partner for KWS Barrel. It features improved disease resistance across the key diseases and in particular, with a rating of.. This combination of disease resistance translates into an excellent untreated yield score, the highest in the group. The variety performs consistently across rotational situations and soil types, and looks likely to be popular with soft wheat growers and among the first to sell out. End-market suitability - In early baking tests it has performed as well as other nabim Group 3 wheats from the 201 harvest.. KWS UK Ltd Cassius x Scout Midge UK seed market share autumn 201 plantings - 2.3% United Kingdom 100 Gleadell s view - KWS Basset joined the L at the same time as stablemate KWS Barrel. It is slightly behind in yield terms, but features improved agronomics. The variety inherits Scout s solid grain characteristics with bold grain size. KWS Basset has performed well in early sowing trials. End-market suitability - Meets all Group 3 criteria, although it has shown some variability in dough extensibility. Market share has increased..2 East region 100 West region North region Untreated yield First cereal 100 Second plus 101 Light soils Heavy soils 100 Specific weight. 8 Wheat Varieties - Group Softs Limagrain (Cassius x NAWW 2) x KWS Santiago Midge ***Variety from a different trial set so cannot be directly compared*** UK seed market share autumn 201 plantings - 0.1% United Kingdom 10 Gleadell s view - LG Skyscraper is one of seven L candidates from breeder Limagrain. It has been released a year ahead of potential recommendation due to its extremely high yield potential, which puts it at the top of the Candidate list and % above control variety KWS Santiago. This soft endosperm wheat with premium potential has solid all-round disease resistance including yellow rust and. The variety is taller strawed, similar to KWS Santiago, and responds well to PG treatments. LG Skyscraper is likely to appeal to a wide range of growers. - East region - West region - North region - Untreated yield First cereal - Second plus - Light soils - Heavy soils - Specific weight. Limagrain (Hereford x Viscount) x Cassius Midge UK seed market share autumn 201 plantings - 2.0% United Kingdom 102 Gleadell s view - One of the picks of the newcomers to the 201 L due to its outstanding rating, LG Sundance gained around 2% market share in last autumn s plantings, restricted by seed availability. LG Sundance is a high-tillering variety, so lower seed rates should be considered if drilling before mid-october. Its best performance looks to be in the second cereal position. LG Sundance features solid disease resistance and OWBM resistance.. Bred by Danish company SEJET (represented in the UK by KWS) the variety caught the eye in trials across the past couple of years due to its short, stiff straw, solid grain quality and disease resistance. The variety has soft endosperm so has various end-market opportunities. Its suitability for distilling makes it useful for the northern market, but it should not be ignored south of the border.. [] East region 102 West region 101 North region 103 Untreated yield First cereal 102 Second plus 103 Light soils 101 Heavy soils 101 Specific weight. However, it has a number of differences. It is earlier to mature than most in the sector which, together with its suitability for distilling, will benefit the northern market. Best performance comes from lighter sites and as a second cereal. Straw. 24 Pulses UK Agent Limagrain Europe Limagrain UK Gleadell s view - Tundra has the lion s share of the winter bean market. Yield is the highest on the PGO list. Tundra has a good balance of agronomic features making it the first choice of winter bean growers. End-market suitability - Tundra now dominates the winter bean market thanks to a massive improvement on yield over Wizard. Although Tundra produces slightly smaller beans than others available, they are still suitable for the export market to chase that all-important premium. UK Agent Wherry & Sons Senova Gleadell s view - Wizard still has a good market share and is popular with export buyers. Its yield is now a way behind Tundra and Bumble, but it is tried and tested and still performs well on a lot of farms. End-market suitability - Now entering its 1th year on the PGO list, Wizard is long established as the exporters favourite variety. It still has a lot to offer growers, despite yield falling behind newer varieties. UK Agent Wherry & Sons Senova Gleadell s view - Bumble has a lot to offer growers including good yield potential and a large seed size. Standing ability is on the lower side so, if not dealt with, this could cause problems on more fertile sites. End-market suitability - A relative newcomer to the winter bean market, Bumble has high yield potential and all the right criteria for marketing into the higher value export trade.
